Lourdes realized a couple of things once those words left her mouth. Aside from the fact that she REALLY did mean it ? It was Christmas and they're currently all sequestered ( god that's a funny word to use these days post!service ) at her baby sister's house. And by EVERYONE she means her middle sister, baby sister's hubby, and both of his kids. They're a little trapped because there's been lots of snow happening in Montana, so much so that their parents' flight had been canceled the other day due to the weather AND the avalanche conditions. Hell, the four of them packed up all their stuff and left the hotel - the kids were sleeping on the couch and Bridgett took the loft so that Lourdes and David could have the other guest room. Despite Imogene's behavior at her home in Greenville when they both just showed up, David had been more than nice towards her. He didn’t really have to be - not in the slightest, Lourdes KNEW her baby sister was a brat since the day she was born. Bridgett couldn’t care less if Lourdes had someone - well she cared but all the details weren't her business.
That's why Imogene had pulled on her brat pack hat and gloves that day - even her baby sister's own husband was appalled. Lourdes was happy and it was their choice about what details, no less when they shared them.
The other thing she realized was how happy he made her.  She wouldn’t have ever just come right and said that to her ex, never in all the time they were together. With him? Oh she knew that her work partner teased her off and on about having a skip in her step the morning after talking to him on the phone. She was trying very hard to not rush into things but at the same time, it was okay right? They're not two people fresh out of college or even just entering their military careers - she's fully retired and in another ten years has plans to leave bounty hunting forever. She's never found herself in a situation where she palms were slightly sweaty, she could feel the blood rushing through her veins from the fear of the silence and tension between them.
He's shocked - it's okay. It's okay - he wasn't expecting that kind of reaction to being nice to the bratzilla and her thousand questions. You're okay. It'll be okay.
Her mind was telling her, teeth grazing her lower lip and she nervously pulled at the sleeves of her sweater. If it wasn't absolutely freezing and snowing out, she may have tried to make a break for the door. That wasn't her - fugitives ran - she did not. It was just a nervous situation.
Not waiting a second longer, she broke the silence. "I mean it too - I am fairly certain you are aware of how happy you make me and I would've never said that to my ex. Not in all the years I was with him but I … want a future with you and the kids. I have plans … in ten to fifteen years, David. I want you and the kids there … retired on my horse farm with me." The look she was definitely getting from Gabe and Mari was definitely shock !

--- Greenville, SC.
Thirteen years had really flown by and Lourdes’ hadn’t expected it to come up this fast, mostly because there had been weeks or a few months where time dragged its feet. The construction of the farmhouse, barn and two corrals had taken this long - better slow and safe rather than quick and structurally unsound. A month ago, Lourdes had purchased two more dogs - Australian shepherds from a breeder that was local. In six months they’d be coming home to the ranch. Sol and Luna were older now, so they wouldn’t be running around for much longer which was fine. Her Malinois’ would sit on the porch with either Gabe or Mari, just watching the ranch hands do their thing - take care of the horses or help with lessons. Whatever tasks were needed for the day. She was loading the last box of her things into the trailer that was hitched to the back of her car, which she planned on selling in order to buy a truck once she was in Colorado. Locking up the trailer, she gave one last look at the dark brick house that had been home since she got out of the Marines. Sol and Luna were seated in the back of the car, looking at her from the open window and watching her as she went to the mailbox and put the keys inside. The real estate agent was coming by in an hour to pick up the keys for the new owner, they had bought all but anything for the dogs. It had made the move a little easier, other than all the money she’d been saving over the last few years plus her military pension. “ . . . Time to get on the road,” She whispered to the two, walking around the front of the Dodge Charger to the driver’s side.
She was nervous. It was a twenty-five hour drive from Greenville to Pasgosa Springs, which she was splitting up into a two day drive. SHE WAS NERVOUS. This future wasn’t just her own, she had managed to talk David into retiring into an easy life with her - obviously his kids were coming with him. She loved those two as much as she loved him, there was no way she would have even mentioned it at Christmas all those years ago if she had intentions of pulling them apart.
‘ La familia lo era todo y la intención de permanecer juntos. ’ ( Family was everything and meant to stay together. )
She had grown up living with her paternal grandparents, they helped raise her and her sisters’ while her parents worked their hardest to keep the roof over their heads. Family dynamics had changed quite a bit since she was younger but the world had also changed, and it was so easy sometimes to walk away instead of toughing it out and working through problems. Although, if anyone asked her why she wanted them to stay together … that was definitely the reason, because despite the hard times it was important to not give up on each other.
Her focus shifted back to the drive ahead - most of it spent listening to a podcast, the dogs slept in the back and only woke up when she stopped at a little park six hours into the journey so they could run around in the fresh air and do their business. She fed them before letting them back into the car, stopping somewhere to get food for herself before making it to where they were staying for the night. Sleep wasn’t going to come easy for her, the tv was playing softly in the background to also mute the … noisy neighbors in the room next door. Her white noise machine was all packed up, now she regretted putting it in her suitcase instead. “ … If this keeps up past one am, I’m calling the front desk.” Begrudgingly, she rolled over onto her stomach and turned off the bedside lamp so only the glow from the television illuminated the room. Somehow, despite her nervousness … she drifted off to sleep and woke up to her face being licked. Rolling over, she kicked off the covers finally and opened the room door to the balcony - thankful she had a room on the second floor and letting her dogs do their business on some newspaper before feeding them again before leaving. Picking up breakfast along the way after getting gas for her car.
— Pagosa Springs, CO.
WELCOME TO LUCKY SPRINGS RANCH.
The last two hours of the trip had really caused her nervousness to uptick in activity, she had to stop a few extra times to leave the car to take a walk up and down the side of the highway or wherever she had pulled over. Sol and Luna had joined her every time, one or the other actually sitting in the passenger’s seat to try and keep her company. She had turned off the podcast the closer they got to the ranch, rolling the windows down and letting the cool breeze fill the car with the scent of the earth - trees, the grass, the dirt underneath it and the dew as it had rained the night before. Clouds were still lingering in the sky, threatening to open up again, moving the passenger’s seat forward so the dogs could get out while she unlocked the front door. The house was fully furnished because once it had been finished? She had ordered it room by room - or had pieces delivered by local shops, coming out a day or two in advance to oversee it being put in the proper room or to build it herself. For now though, she went back to at least unloading the boxes from the trailer and got whatever else she had in the trunk.
She’d bring the trailer to the rental place to return it in the morning, clearly too tired from unloading everything and unpacking the kitchen boxes - she flopped on the couch. Grateful to finally be home … and wondering how long it would be now before David and the kids would come walking through that door. A small smile appearing on her sleepy face as she curled up into the couch, drifting to sleep.

the worst day since yesterday. ( 2022 writing piece. )
Removing the leather bound journal from her mini backpack, she unraveled the ties from around it and swore under her breath as the felt tip pen unceremoniously fell out and to the floor.
— 𝓝𝓸𝓿𝓮𝓶𝓫𝓮𝓻 28𝓽𝓱, 2022.
So … it's been a while since I last wrote anything in you. Sorry about that I guess? But the it's been a few months since I've actually needed to. That was the plan though …. right? To journal only to help clear my mind for the worst days. … And today was definitely one of the worst that I've had to deal with in a loooooong time. Lourdes was seated in her car in the parking lot of Carolina Bail Bonding Inc. Everybody had gone home for the day and she … was taking a little longer to help clear her mind for the drive home. Sniffling softly, she brought a hand up to wipe away the tears from her eyes. Staring down at the edge of that index finger, noticing that it had little black smears on them, not caring that her mascara was smudged now. The mechanical pencil moved carefully against the paper once more.
Here's the story. Someone's beloved abuela showed up this afternoon just after lunch … because the owner got a phone call from her grandson's defense attorney. The man didn't have the time or the energy to find a translator or try to tell her what was going on. Her grandson has been gone for two months, out on bail for his reckless driving while drunk that killed three kids. … He received a mystery call from some country with no extradition to the states, telling him the kid isn't coming back. This older woman reminds me of my own abuela, who lived with me and my family while growing up. She spoke nothing but Spanish, so I had the misfortune of having to sit her down and translate the best I could … … … — Eso se debe a que su nieto no solo no compareció ante el tribunal sin una buena razón, sino que se saltó la fianza y huyó del país ... el tribunal la mantenía en casa. { That because her grandson not only failed to appear in court without a good reason, jumping his bail and fled the country ... the court was keeping her home. } A home she worked likely most of her life to keep, that she raised her family and their families in. Her hands were shaking as she held the journal, dropping it into the passenger's seat just as two drops fell into the page before she did. Tears mixed with mascara stained the page, she couldn’t finish it. She was too exhausted - too mentally and emotionally exhausted from the turmoil of today. Placing both hands on the wheel, she dropped her head down between her arms as a cry of anguish tore from her throat now.
After some time had passed, Lourdes finally started the engine once she had cried as much as possible. Having wrapped up the journal again, placing it and the pencil inside the mini backpack once more and used a make-up wipe to clear away what remained of her mascara. Once home, she let the dogs run around outside while putting their food together. All she did was shower and put on her most comfortable pajamas, no energy to even eat herself.
The journal entry would remain incomplete for now, it weighed too heavy on her heart. Turning on the white noise machine to try and help her fall asleep.

— The commonwealth of Massachusetts.
(World's End AU)
Lourdes hadn't really expected to ever make it this far north, hell after the convoy had been ambushed ? She hadn't even expected to wake up like she had but here she was, months later — most days not wanting to bother with traversing ANYWHERE anymore and just staying put in whatever run down or abandoned building / home she had set up shop in. It was okay to be tired though, okay to not be in the mood to fight infected to stay alive or even your own kind. The world kept spinning even if she didn't roll out from under the layers of clothes she used as blankets now, however the last couple of days she got up at sunrise and kept going til sunset. Hiding out in the nearest structure by climbing a tree and entering through a broken upper window.
If there was one thing she had learned / figured out since waking up in that small town hardware store? Being higher up was a better idea, served as a tactical advantage for numerous reasons – especially if one had military training in their pocket.
Another thing she hadn't expected … … … it was the middle of winter. Having grown up in Michigan, the female understood exactly how cold it got when the great lakes were on the right of your home state. Even worse was that Petoskey had been a coastal resort community, so winters there were just as freezing. It was likely a shock to any remaining survivors that even snow was falling, anything out in this unexpected weather was either frozen or confused while becoming frozen – and Massachusetts was a coastal state. If anyone asked her if she expected to see snow this early or even have to think about dealing with ice?! She would have kept going south until she hit Texas or Mexico, somewhere stupidly warm or somewhere along the border of the mason-dixion line so it was well in between. She hadn't crossed paths with many survivors yet but she guessed that the entirety of the Northeast and maybe two or three a little further south – were all dealing with an onslaught of snow and ice.
– South Boston.
It was a dangerous trek from South Boston High School ( where she was sleeping in what was left of the nurse's office ) to the harbor. It wasn't just the ferals or even the ghouls one had to worry about, not even the mutants ! No, out here in the cold sea filled radioactive nightmare air … … … beware of that sudden scuttling noise behind you. Or the sudden explosion from a nest of dinosaur sized eggs near the banks of the water.
Mirelurks, that's what they were called. Giant crabs, and they would be since everything had been irradiated when the bombs dropped. Hell, even the lobsters were big behemoths. Saltwater didn't freeze up so they were free to scuttle about and attack whomever they could get their claws on. Sneaking up on anything in this weather was hard, as the snow was just as noisy as the ice. Long dark brown hair framed her face as she climbed over the fence that surrounded the long since abandoned high school, carefully dropping down onto the trash bags below to soften her landing. Lourdes paused a moment to take in her surroundings, how quiet it was and the unease she felt about even being outside. She jumped though, attention snapped quickly at the feel of something z i p past her face, grazing her cheek and she felt it beginning to bleed. " — Raiders!" She yelled to no one but herself as another bullet flew past her, followed by a few more as she started to run. Sliding along in the snow as she rounded the corner and took off as fast as she could manage down the alleyway.
Taking a few deep breaths, she could hear the sounds of shouting and running vast approaching only to hear it cease … and the sounds of scuttling echoed on the ice ridden roads. Lourdes didn't look over her shoulder, just immediately started to climb up the side of whatever building was the nearest to get to the roof for safety. Or at least … a fair amount of distance. Removing the HK VP9 from inside the coat she had on, Lourdes quickly ejected the magazine to see how much ammo she had before sliding it back in and racking the slide. Hopefully, this would make those Raiders leave her alone – taking a few deep breaths, she opened fire on one of the Mirelurks that had come scuttling down the road. That caught its attention and it came scuttling quickly as it could for the building she was using the roof as cover for. " … Shit," It was uttered as she put the gun back inside of her coat. Not wanting to run out of ammo, one hand reaching behind her and removing the machete from its sheath before looking around for access into the building from the roof.

— Colorado Springs, CO —
Two in the morning - the side of the highway.
Her ribs were screaming, if they actually could - that would be how bad the pain was from being stomped on three times by the fugitive she had come to Colorado to catch. Bruising was definitely already formed, even under the vest she could tell -- and here she was ... lying across the back seat of her rental in agony. The last bit of her strength had been used to crawl into the car so she didn't end up run over when traffic picked up again. That was a few hours from now when people were leaving their homes for work … … and by the time she was found? Lourdes could easily be a goner … or slipped into a coma from the pain and the cold that was seeping into her bones from not turning the rental's heat on. Or grabbing the emergency thermal blankets she had bought that were in the trunk.
— You know what else was in the trunk? Flares, and a flare gun. She H A D T O get up. Gritting her teeth and muffling a pained scream through them, harsh breath puffed out like a bull ready to charge as she sat up. Slowly sliding across the back seat through the open door and keeping one arm wrapped around her ribs, certain that a few of them were at least fractured or completely broken. Staggering as she leaned against the side of the rental, Lourdes pressed the button on the key fob that unlocked the trunk and heard it pop open just as she rounded the tail light and almost fell in as a last resort. Shaking from both the cold and the blinding pain, she dropped a flare a few times back in the trunk before sliding it in properly and shooting it up into the air. "... One more just in case," She whispered out before firing another flare up into the night sky. Picking up both of the road flares, she walked as slowly as she could away from the trunk. Removing the cap from the end of the flare in order to strike it like a match, before dropping it on the road at least two feet from the driver's side of the vehicle. The pain was too much for her now, dropping the second flare under the car while staggering back to the trunk and tipping over the edge in a very ungraceful manner.
Lourdes did her best to open up one of the emergency thermal blankets, gritting her teeth and breathing harshly as she wrapped it around her … before the pain caused her to pass out.
— TWO DAYS LATER // Centura Penrose Hospital —
The steady beeping of the heart monitor and the pain medication wearing off is what caused Lourdes to slowly wake up. The nurse had just walked in to check on her and almost jumped out of her skin, " LYDIA ! LYDIA ! PAGE THE DOCTOR ! SHE'S AWAKE ! I'll get you some ice chips, there's some state cops who want to speak with you. " Without so much as another word, the nurse raced off as the other nurse behind the desk was paging the doctor who was in charge of Lourdes' care. Feeling around blindly on either side of the bed, she tested the rail buttons in order to ease herself into an upright position when the nurse and two state patrol officers came walking into the room. The nurse brought over the cup with the ice slivers and fed them carefully to her with a spoon. God, her throat was so dry and scratchy – she'd kill for some tea with lots of honey right now. These ice chips would do though.
" Ms. Rasmussen, we're certain you are fuzzy on the details of how you got here — a good citizen of this city saw both your flares and called it in. We arrived moments later and rushed you here. We returned to the scene to check the vehicle and found your bounty hunter's license and the file you have … on the fugitive you're chasing down for the lovely state of South Carolina. " One of the cops said while she was carefully sucking down the ice chips. " … I regret to inform you that your fugitive is still on the loose … and has murdered three more people. He is now … a serial killer – as his body count is more than three. "
Lourdes swallowed deeply, "... I need to get out of here. Right now. He is HUNTING down the son of the first couple…" She coughed hard and her throat was stinging like multiple wasps had stung her. ".... Because that kid is his legal son…" Breathing shakily, she rested her head back and took the cup gently from the nurse as the doctor walked in. "'ey 'oc — 'ad 'ews 'irst?" She said faintly while shoveling a few more ice chips into her mouth. The nurse looking towards the doctor as the two state cops moved into the hallway to radio dispatch.
