Fantasy AU (Ralindon)
An au where Raligon is a travelling doctor who stumbled upon a small, peculiar town where people are suspicious of newcomers. However, he still wanted to help the sick and the ones with illnesses, so he chose to stay for a few weeks.
Upon staying there, he observed the large, big tree in the middle of the village. It's surrounded by the village's crops and fields. He also noticed how villagers pay large respect to the said tree. When he asked a child about it, the child gleefully said it was a tree that lights up at night, and it grants wishes on a particular full moon once a year. An adult overheard the conversation and immediately intervened, grabbing the child protectively and glaring at Raligon, she said, "But don't get too many ideas about it. Greedy people who go here to investigate that tree, always ends up dying. There's a monster guarding that tree every night, except for one night. It can grant wishes, but it can also kill unsuspecting travellers and villagers. So don't be stupid." And then the child and the adult left, leaving Raligon a bit confused.
Curious though, Raligon stayed up one night and walked around the village even if he was warned not to. Not that he thinks he can fully defend himself, but because he expects there could be a different side of the story. For what he heard was just from one side, there could be one more than what it seems.
Sitting down under the tree, Raligon enjoyed the gentle, cool breeze, along with the peace that comes along with the night. It wasn't scary, it wasn't lonely. It was the kind of peace he never had with the bustling cities he went to before. It couldn't even be compared to other remote areas he had been to. There was a certain charm to this town. Whatever it was, he was curious about it.
Raligon ended up falling asleep while thinking about everything. He dreamt that he was there in the exact same spot, but seemingly in a different time with how everyone's clothing was presented in the dream. There was someone calling his name. But Raligon couldn't see his face. Only that he knew he had black hair, wore a dark purple cape, and—
He stirred awake, opening his eyes gently and slowly, he saw someone sitting right beside him, but still from a safe distance away. Raligon gasped in surprise, but immediately composed himself. The boy— man? sitting beside him looked extremely similar to someone he just saw, but Raligon forgot his dream almost too quickly.
"Hi! What's your name and what are you doing here?" Raligon smiled at his companion, who didn't even spare him a look. He just sat quietly, looking at the distance.
"Isn't that something I should be asking you?" Came the cold reply of the black-haired boy. It took a moment for Raligon to realize the boy wasn't touching the ground. His heart was racing fast, but he knew he wasn't scared. It was almost too comical at how excited he was to witness something so surreal. It's like he hasn't woken up from his dream.
"Mmm.. but I think there's no harm in asking!" Raligon chiped in, his smile unwavering as he leaned his back towards the tree while he hugged his knees.
The boy finally gazed at him, and Raligon took note of his young and melancholic appearance. The boy didn't say anything, so Raligon stood up, walked towards the boy. Reaching out his hand, Raligon gave the boy another warm smile.
"My name is Raligon Esteria. I'm a doctor who decided to stay here for a while. Nice to meet you!"
There was an unreadable expression from the boy as he continued to just gaze at him. Raligon was about to retract his hand when the boy spoke again. "Haven't those good for nothing villagers said anything about the monster guarding this tree?"
Raligon flinched, wow, this boy has quite a sharp tongue, but it was alright. They were strangers, after all.
Raligon relaxed, he closed his eyes and kept a small smile again, his hand not retracting from the kind gesture at all.
"Well, if you're the monster, I should've been dead now, right?"
There was another round of silence, but this time it felt more unusually comforting than before.
"You're just like that time, too... this is too cruel..." When Raligon heard a faint whisper from the boy, he opened his eyes and he could swear there was a hint of loneliness and longing from the boy's eyes and expression, which disappeared as quickly as it appeared.
The boy took his hand, he felt warm, as opposed to the cold skin that Raligonw as expecting.
"Brandon."
Raligon felt happy to have the boy trust him enough to say his name. "Brandon? That's an great name!"
"Someone...." Brandon paused, looking away and gazing at the moon instead, making Raligon listen intently to his words. "Someone... irreplaceable.. someone important to me gave that name to me..." Brandon then turned towards the tree, looking upward. ".. Under this very tree..."
The breeze blew stronger, the faint swaying of the leaves and rustling of the grass adding to Brandon's melancholic look. Raligon wanted to comfort him in any way, but found that words are the only thing he could give Brandon. And so he said,
"My grandpa used to say that we only give names to people and things we love. I may not know where that important person to you is right now, but I'm sure they loved you enough to let you live with the memory of your bond."
This time, Raligon saw how Brandon's eyes widened, turned glassy for a second, even. But Brandon looked away before Raligon could confirm it. Brandon sighed.
"You're right..." He faced Raligon again, and this time, he was wearing something akin to a smile.
"Thank you."
Raligon blushed, but immediately shook his head and composed himself, "No worries! I didn't do anything but tell what I think! Anyway, it's really getting cold here. Do you want some tea? Or coffee? In my house? I mean.. the inn where I stay.. I have a place... is it called an inn?? It's separated from the main inn but.. ahh.. but it's very small.. " Raligon kept on rambling, at a lost of words from how much his heart was beating.
"You should go back. I'll be here always, anyway." Brandon mentioned, but Raligon shook his head once more, offering a much kinder, calmer smile this time.
"I insist! Even if you are what you say you are, getting a cold isn't good! Okay?"

Why I won't ship Brandon x Raligon
This is something I wanted to talk about for a while. I used to ship Brandon and Raligon but after looking more into their relationship I noticed red flags and decided to stop it.
When you first look at this ship it seems cute and wholesome. However, it has serious red flags that I think should be talked about.
First of all: The design choice
We have an adult Raligon and child looking Brandon who is around 600 years old... this is problematic. From the outside perspective, for someone who doesn't know Brandon and Raligon, it looks like it's an actual child dating an adult. Grooming anyone? This is the same shit like in anime where you get a female character who looks and acts like a child but is actually coulpe hundred years old that is dating an actual male adult. Yeah, not fun
Second of all: Codependency
Codependent means "excessive emotional or psychological reliance on a partner, typically one who required support on account of an illness or addicition"
Brandon is extremely dependent on Raligon. You can see that in WoT when Brandon absorbs too much dark energy and is dependent on Raligon to help him in that state. Raligon was the first one to find Brandon and help him to get out of that state (the story of how they met) and from that point Brandon is reliant on Raligon. From the interactions and story we can see that Brandon cannot exist without Raligon, he thinks he needs Raligon, that they have to be together. Raligon however can be on his own, he's an independent person. He doesn't need Brandon to be in his life, he enjoys Brandon's company and appreciates his help but Raligon doesn't need him to be there with him.
Lastly: Brandon't obsession
Brandon's obsession over Raligon comes from his codependency, from his thinking that he needs Raligon in his life. From the story we know that Raligon sacrificed himself in the final battle in WoT - meaning Raligon chose to die, chose to use all of his power to seal the power of Ram and therefore die. It was his decision. Brandon cannot accept that. He griefs but never gets to the acceptance part of grief. Brandon is obsessed with bringing Raligon back (which we also know from the story). This obsession is unhealthy. Brandon spends 50 years doing anything to get Raligon back, he keeps his soul and doesn't let go of it. Many of you may find it romantic and sweet but this obsession prevents Brandon from growing as a person. Brandon doesn't get much development, growth. He doesn't get to the point of "i am my own person and I can solve my own issues. I can ask for help but I am able to work out what I need on my own". Brandon insists he must be with Raligon and then he will be okey. He feels like without Raligon, he cannot live. This is extremely unhealthy and dangerous.
Those are the reasons why I will not support this ship as it pushes some unhealthy relationship patterns.

vague spoilers for war of the tyrants: book of strife | chapter 7
okay so for anyone who completed chapter 7 or got around to this one point in the story: i believe it was implied that brandon & raligon were sharing a room together. when ondal came knocking at the door asking for raligon to give him medicine,, brandon answered in his place asking what he wanted,, so i’m assuming this is them trying to tell us that raligon was Also in the room with brandon at the time
i have this headcanon that there’s at least two different kinds of rooms at the schmitt inn,, one has two separate beds & the other only has one slightly larger bed. assuming that everyone else got their own room,, i like to think that brandon purposefully booked the room with only one bed in it so him & raligon could share it together
OH and this Also ties in with my other headcanon that brandon & raligon almost always share a bed together when raligon would go to sleep (since brandon is immortal so he doesn’t Need To,, but maybe he’d rest his eyes and cuddle with him)
