This novel has left me with conflicting emotions. Its both fast and slow, hot and cold, shows the dark sides of society while supporting humanity's morality as a whole. While this novel has its flaws, its incredibly good at directing the reader's emotions. Its also incredibly heavy, and deals with highly sensitive topics.

This novel is not for everyone.

Lin Chen is embroiled in a set of overarching criminal plots when he is implicated in a serial murder case. Xing Conglian, the chief police officer in charge of the case, finds himself paying more attention to Lin Chen as the first case develops. He sees that the top four families in country seem to have it out for this young psychologist for unknown reasons, and his superiors are angry about Lin Chen's continued involvement. But they continue regardless.

Lin Chen and Xing Conglian slowly unravel an entire plot regarding the innate construction of the human mind, culminating in a tense situation involving millions of civilians. As those who are taking a stand continue to meet gristly ends, a dark web of connections forms. That's all I'll say about the plot for now.

Lin Chen is quite an interesting character. He's both mysterious and charming, ruthless towards himself and incredibly soft towards others. Most of my drive for reading this novel came from feeling his emotions with him- he's both rational and incredibly sympathetic towards those put in his care. He's determined to make decisions that hurt- and for good reasons. The growth he has through the novel feels organic. For a good portion of the novel I was quite concerned about his mental state, especially after things started culminating in the fourth and fifth arcs. A lot of foreshadowing of his mental state is shown even in earlier arcs, and despite the author admitting that the first few arcs were written as short stories the effort made to link things together didn't feel too odd to me personally. The ending does feel a bit rushed, but the author mentioned they were going to write another arc if their health hadn't failed them.

Xing Conglian is three things: a police officer, a retired secret military unit, and a rich heir. While having these three titles, he doesn't feel overbearing- he's very down to earth, but decisive and a capable leader. He's used to holding the sky up, has a tendency to control, but also knows himself well and is a capable leader. This reminds me to tell you that yes, this is a cop drama- I would day it isn't too bad honestly? But considering censorship, the police department is not thrown in a bad light despite things.

Also, their first sexual encounter together is.. weird. Its frantic and bordering on nonconsensual, Lin Chen is not in the right frame of mind, and literally no one was here was happy about it (me included). I'm deciding to ignore it, as the rest of the scene was quite good about the result of all of the little actions they were taking towards each other (and the translator had to go find the smut because it got censored), but man. Xing Conglian. I don't think that was the best time to fuck him.

This novel deals with criminal psychology and references many complicated and painful subjects. The author uses actual psychology and real papers as research references. This book was written in 2015-2016. The 'good guys' don't always win and those who need saving are not always saved.

I would recommend that if you want to read this book, to carefully go over the triggers and make sure you're in a good frame of mind before reading. Especially if you have trouble with depictions of suicide, or detailed depictions of rape, please keep yourself safe.

That being said, if you are in the mood for an interesting story full of twists and turns, give this novel a try. I quite liked it despite the few things I have issues with.

How was the translation? Good! I love Kinky and their translations because they go out of their way to make sure their readers get what is going on! They also translate Nian Zhong's novels and that alone makes them my beloved.

Would I recommend this novel? Yes, But again make sure you're okay with the content.

Would I reread this novel? No. The fourth arc alone means I'll probably never consider this novel for a reread. It was good, but its too heavy.

**Part of this novel references 2015 material about the Republic of Congo, and using the rainforests there as a backdrop for human trafficking, virus and drug development, etc. There are depictions of some of the tribes living in the rainforest itself, and some disparaging comments from side characters about religion and beliefs there.

With this arc I'm little sad at the depiction of how Tor works, as live broadcasting something like this would be impossible to do anonymously on a dark web browser. Especially in 2016.

Gore, Animal death, Rape (And descriptions of, from the perpetrator), "False accusations of rape", Victim blaming, Car Accident, Suicide, Homophobia, Prostitution
