Ok so you probably know this already, but there’s a behind the scenes documentary of Top Gun (1986) and it features nearly all of the actors and Tony Scott and others discussing the making of the film. See Part 1 and Part 2 on YouTube, the videos are by link only.

In part 1 of the documentary, Tony Scott mentions that a big inspiration for the overall look of movie came from a book of photography by a man named Bruce Weber. And Tony Scott specifies this picture below as a big part of his vision because one of the models looked just like Val Kilmer, one looked just like Tom Cruise, and the last one was a jock-Rick Rossovich type.

I’m actually cry laughing at the thought of Matt fucking Mello so he’ll eat his vegetables like a good boy. #im genuinely mortified #like i know i bitch about my job a lot #but im genuinely pretty good at it #my last 3-4 quality scores have been really good. like. top end of the office average #and suddenly im 5 errors away from being given an official warning... so that's not great #to give u some idea. the lower the number the better the score. my last quality score was a 4. today i got a 25. #i have no idea how this happened?? #part of me is like... has there been a mistake. cos idk who edited that paper but surely it wasn't me. did i read it with my eyes shut? #my scores usually do take a dip in q4 cos i don't handle this time of year very well. but not THAT much of a dip jesus christ #my only saving grace is that if someone does that badly they do a few extra checks to see if it's a one-off #and on the next one they pulled i got a 6. which does make me look somewhat less bad #i ended up averaging out at a 14. so like. im still embarrassed but i reckon that's forgiveable #still. that's gonna be a fun Q4 meeting next week

I also think that hs/the hs fandom was responding to the way the internet was in the early 2010s. it's probably a cycle of influence but I will say that with books like htn whose authors originally wrote like. complex gothic sff angst fic, that type of writing isn't limited to the hs fandom at all. There was a whole time period where if your fandom was even a little sff oriented you would have people writing these epic fics with fantasy elements where two characters would have a wildly complex and fraught relationship destroying everything else in their path for the same amount of words as the holy bible. It's so hard to describe this vibe but I'd say like, gothic sff melodrama with unreliable narrators really had a moment in fandom in the hs time period. Some of that stuff influences the way I think about fiction to this day and like. I do believe muir a little when she says she didn't take anything in particular from hs because even though there are some similar choices she makes in her writing, that was kinda just the vibe back then too

#i mean i can't speak for everyone but tbh? #htn reminded me of the d*ath note classic those who stand for nothing etc etc #like. the absolutely unrelenting portrayal of mental illness the supernatural elements that are like #hidden away in there underneath a story about awful parties #until htn nothing really had topped that fic for me as far as horrible party scenes and unreliable narrator #i think harrow is a more sympathetic protagonist than light in any universe but you know #oh btw if you look up the fic content warning everything. much like tlt #it is quite literally longer than the bible last it was updated #laura had some stuff come up but i maintain that if she ever wrote a novel it would be the next hugo winner
