The dust has scarce settled following the Elementals taking their leave, but it turns out they’ve left behind one final gift for all of Garreg Mach:
A wondrous, illusory portal with the ability to take one to a world of make-believe where one’s imagination is the limit...
The catch? It only works for short periods of time, after which it will require a long pause between uses in order to fully recharge. The church, of course, already has the perfect use in mind for it. Now that they’ve no projectionist to launch them into the world of illusion, they are wanting for some manner in which to continue the tradition of these oft useful arena bouts.
Will you join the fray?
(... It’s completely optional, of course! I’m sure your grades & pay aren’t lacking for any extra credit... right...)
Welcome to another Arena! This will be a mini-event beginning June 16th that will allow members of the Officers Academy to test weapons and combat builds for their characters without the constraint of current masteries and skill ranks. As always, one of our goals with this event is to check that weapons and abilities work as designed, and to catch anything that might need further refinement before our next big event in August. It’s unlikely that we’ll catch everything that should be fixed, but there’s nothing wrong with a test run! As a thank you for helping us, there is one skill point waiting for anyone who participates, as long as your muse isn’t disqualified for inactivity!
How this event will work:
Sign up your muse here. Every muse will start with access to two pieces of equipment at D rank or lower, Beginner class mastery, or an event team prize. Please look at our Combat Manual or the Rank Chart to select your equipment.
You will also select one beginner class to start with, which will automatically grant your muse its class mastery ability without taking up an inventory slot. You can still choose other class masteries for your other two inventory slots if you would like, but whatever you choose for your class will influence whether or not your muse takes effective damage from certain weapons. Please note that if you should not select the class mastery as one of your equipment slots. For example, if you choose Myrmidon as your muse’s starting class, do NOT select Speed+ as one of your starting equipment. It will already be granted to you.
Combat arts do not take up an inventory slot and can be equipped permanently to ONE weapon per inventory selection. If you decide to have your muse bring an Iron Sword, they can also equip the combat art Wrath Strike, but if they also choose to bring a Steel Sword for their second inventory slot, Wrath Strike will only be allowed to be used with the Iron Sword until inventories are re-selected for the next round.
All participating muses will be randomized into teams of 4 or 5. Your teams will not be competing against each other at any point.
Your enemies will get stronger as you move through the tiers. But so will you! As you conquer each tier, your muse slowly unlocks access to higher-level weapons, abilities, and class skills. From the second battle onwards, you will have a chance to adjust your inventory as much as you’d like to be prepared for the next enemy or to simply try out a different build.
All dice rolls must be made in the TOA server using Dice Maiden. Each team will have their own thread to make dice rolls in and to message each other about arena threads or anything else pertaining to their specific team. This event is one where you will need to be in the server for rolling and communication purposes, but rest assured that this is only for the event and will never be required outside of it.
Lastly, the theme of this arena will be Shields and Breaks! The mod team intends to design enemies that will hurt, and will have a high KO rate. To balance this, muses who were KO’d at the end of their last battle will be automatically revived at 50% HP for the start of the next round if their team makes it through.
Signups will close at 11:59PM EST on June 15th so that we have time to sort teams. Let us know if you have any questions! Additionally, we will be taking volunteers to help us put together the combat documents and double-check team math each round. If interested, please fill out this form.

I don’t know if I can fully explain what my gender is, even to me, but I know its the one where pretty much everyone in my life uses “she” pronouns and I’d never really be bothered to ask them to use anything else, but adding “she/her” to any online bio or screen name or email signature makes something small but important inside me wake up and shake its head, saying “nonononononono”

Charlie was woken up the next morning by a tray being tossed next to his mat. He looked up to see a solider, looking extremely annoyed.
"Eat quickly," he ordered.
Charlie glared at him as he slowly rose to a sit. He slid the tray closer and ate the meager portion of toast and grapes. As soon as he picked up the last grape, the solider ripped the tray from his hands and left the room.
"God," Charlie mumbled to himself.
He forced his aching body to stand. He walked to the bathroom and splashed water on his face and into his mouth before deciding to take a bath. He ran the water and slipped into its warmth, the heat soothing his body. He leaned his head back against the wall, and accidentally drifted off.
Water entering his nose caused him to jerk awake. He began splashing violently, only stopping when he realized he was alone. He held his face in his hands as he tried to calm down.
Once he had control of his breathing, he got out of the tub. It was then he noticed a towel and a fresh set of clothes were on the shelf above the toilet. He didn't remember anyone coming in, and he wondered how they got there. Nonetheless, he was grateful. He dried off and swiped on cheap deodorant before he got dressed.
He sat on his mat with the blanket draped over his legs. His head was doing better than last night, but a dull throbbing still remained. The bruises on his skin had darkened into a deep purple. He avoided looking in the mirror, especially at his face. He remembered last night and his stomach tightened. Before, he hoped Mallory would remember it, but now, he wasn't so sure.
A few hours passed and lunch was brought to him. This time, when the solider entered with his tray, he stopped just after entering the room. Charlie looked at him quizzically, but upon closer inspection, he realized that he looked familiar.
"Charlie," he breathed.
He sprinted toward him, dropping the tray just before picking Charlie up and pulling him into a tight hug. Charlie whimpered, his bruises getting pressed on, but he returned the hug.
"Deke," Charlie said, "I'm so happy to see you, but-"
"I'm getting you out of here," Deke said, pulling his mask down to his chin.
"They know what you look like," Charlie said.
"How?"
"They have you on camera taking some file."
"Oh... shit."
Deke rubbed his hand over his mouth as he thought.
"You need to leave. Please, before they find out you're here," Charlie said, placing a hand on his shoulder.
"You kidding me? I'm not leaving without you guys," Deke said.
"Do you have a plan?" Charlie asked.
"I've been working on a plan since day one. Look, I have access to the gun locker. It's not far from where the others are. I'm going to grab some guns, then bust into the room. The hallway leads us straight out to the helipad."
"That... could work," Charlie said.
"I know it's risky, but I've been weighing the options and it looks like our only chance."
"When do you plan to do this?"
"Now."
Charlie's eyes went wide.
"Now?"
"Yes, it's meal time and most of them are in the chow hall. There's no traffic in the hallway. We can do this, Charlie."
Charlie looked around the room for a moment before nodding.
"Okay. Let's do it."
They walked toward the door. Deke handed Charlie a pistol and stuck his head outside. He made the hand signal for "clear", and they began making their way toward the gun locker. He was right, the hall was empty. They made it to the locker and slipped inside unnoticed. Deke grabbed two M16s and a few extra magazines. Charlie grabbed his own M16 and shoved two magazines into his sweat pockets. Once they were set, Deke peaked out the door again. They made it to the room without incident.
"Ready?" Deke asked.
Charlie nodded.
He kicked in the door and quickly stabbed the guarding solider in the throat before he could make a sound.
“Deke?" Adrian said.
"Come on," Deke said as he took the keys from the soldier's vest pocket, "we don't have much time."
He quickly unlocked everyone's handcuffs. He handed a gun to Crow and Adrian, and Charlie handed the pistol to Ethan. They filed out of the room, guns at the ready, and followed Deke down the hall.
"There's the door," Deke said, motioning straight ahead.
A shot was fired. Adrian fell. He stumbled back to his feet, limping.
"Keep going," he said.
Another shot was fired and screamed past Charlie's head.
"Stop!" Someone yelled from behind.
Crow turned around and walked backwards as he fired off a couple rounds. Charlie did the same, managing to hit someone. He saw the trail of blood that Adrian was leaving behind, but kept his focus. They made it out the door. A helicopter was waiting less than 50 yards away.
Deke switched to a sprint, making it to the helicopter before the rest of the team so he could start up the engine. It roared to life and the blades began to spin. Bullets flew past and hit the helicopter with a "tink".
Charlie lagged behind, his energy sparse to begin with. He stopped behind some barrels for cover as he fired back.
"Charlie, let's go!" Crow yelled.
The rest of the team was on the helicopter. Charlie inched back, still firing. He turned back toward the team and waved them off.
"Go!" He yelled.
"No, get your ass on here, now!" Crow yelled back.
"There's too many of them. You'll get shot down!"
A bullet just barely missed Charlie's arm, forcing him to sink down to a crouch. Bullets rained upon the side of the helicopter. Deke lifted it into the air slightly.
"Last chance! Get the FUCK over here, that is an order!"
Charlie looked back and waved them off again. Deke pulled up, about ten feet off the ground. Crow jumped out and landed with a roll. He sprinted over to Charlie and took cover behind some stacked crates. He waved off the helicopter.
"Charlie, I'm going to fucking kill you," he said, barely heard over the gunfire.
Charlie ignored him and continued to fire back. More soldiers pooled from inside, firing at the helicopter as it left. Charlie shot his last bullet and dropped the gun. Crow continued to fire, picking off a few more of the men before running out of ammo. The helicopter was at a safe enough distance to escape.
The gunfire stopped. Charlie put his hands into the air and slowly rose up. Crow walked out from behind the crates with his arms in the air. A few soldiers approached, guns ready. They kicked Charlie down to his knees and roughly put his arms together with zip ties. They forced him to his feet again, shoving him and Crow back into the building. They passed numerous bodies, blood pooling out of them onto the floor.
They then entered an elevator.
"What the fuck is wrong with you?" Crow spat.
"You know damn well that we would've been shot down if I hadn't drawn their fire," Charlie shot back.
"Shut up," a soldier hissed, hitting Charlie in the back with his rifle.
The elevator doors opened and they were marched down a hallway. They entered a room labeled "CONFERENCE" and inside was a long table. Mallory was sitting on the end of it, facing away from the door.
Charlie and Crow were thrown to their knees at the other end of the room. The air was thick with tension as Mallory slowly stood from the table and turned around. He shoved his hands in his pockets and sighed.
"Really?"
Charlie and Crow looked at each other.
"You really thought that would work?"
"It did," Charlie said, "three of us got out."
Mallory rubbed his temples.
"If that's what you consider a success, then I'll let you have that one," he said, "because they don't matter. You two, on the other hand, are much more of my concern. I'll tell you what- I'm not even mad. In fact, I'm more upset with the complete lack of competence within my own ranks."
The soldiers in the room shifted uncomfortably.
"There's going to be some changes around here," Mallory said, "but for now, return them to where they belong. My head hurts far to much to deal with them right now."
Crow and Charlie were walked out of the room. They went back down the elevator, and were separated at a fork in the hallway. Charlie was lead back to his room. The zip ties were cut off and he was left alone again.
He collapsed onto his mat, breathing heavily. The adrenaline began to wear off and the aching in his muscles returned. He couldn’t stay still; he was determined to find a position that didn’t hurt to lie in. Eventually, frustration got the best of him and he settled on his back. Tears of defeat formed in his eyes and he did his best to fight them back.
Adrian, Ethan, and Deke are safe. That’s what matters.
Adrian was hit in the lower part of his leg. Ethan would easily manage to take care of it. He would be fine. Hopefully, they would make it home, or at least somewhere safe soon. He wished Crow would have stayed on the helicopter, so that he would be safe, too.
Exhaustion took over and he fell asleep again. He wasn’t brought dinner, which meant he was able to sleep for a longer period. He wasn’t really hungry, anyway. He spent the rest of the night curled up on his mat.
Morning came, and he woke up just before breakfast. He dragged himself into the bathroom and drank water from the faucet. Soon after, breakfast arrived. He held his arms out to grab the tray from the solider, but the solider hesitated.
“Don’t know if I want to give this to you,” he said.
Charlie stared at him.
“You killed my friend, you know.”
“That’s the risk you take when you sign up for this shit,” Charlie snapped.
The solider threw the tray at him, then splashed the glass of water in his face. He picked up the tray and acted like he was going to hit Charlie with it, before deciding against it and leaving the room.
Charlie sighed and wiped his face with the blanket. He picked the blueberries off the floor and ate them, then the toast which had landed in his lap. After he ate, he grabbed a towel from the bathroom to soak up the water on his mat. He tossed the towel across the room after he finished and sat on the mat.
A few minutes went by and the door opened again. In walked two soldiers. They approached Charlie and ordered him to stand up before handcuffing him. It was an all too familiar feeling.
They took him down the hall and up the same elevator as yesterday. This time, instead of stopping on the second floor, they went to the top. The hallway was much shorter, and they were soon at a door. One of them knocked, and Mallory opened it. Inside appeared to be a small apartment. It barely looked lived in with how tidy it was. The soldiers took Charlie inside, then left, leaving him alone with Mallory.
“This your space?” Charlie asked.
“Yeah. Sit,” Mallory said, pulling out a chair from the table.
Charlie took a seat as he looked around. The smell of bergamot filled the air; a candle was lit on the counter in the kitchenette. Mallory sat in a chair across from Charlie. He leaned back and folded his arms.
“I’m sick of being here,” he said.
“You’re sick of being here?” Charlie scoffed.
“Yes. I’m going back home for a few days,” Mallory said.
“Oh no, I’m so sad,” Charlie replied sarcastically.
“Well, don’t be, because you’re coming with.”

Ethiopian factory sports Jack Ma quotes (permalink)
This pic was taken by researchers from Caribou Data at a textiles factory in Ethiopia. Every curtain on every window bore silk-screened quotes from Jack Ma's book (the name of the factory has been redacted to preserve the owner's privacy).
The researchers told me that 72 hours after Alibaba moved into Rwanda, every coffee farmer using the platform had sold out of their inventory.
It's a potent and visually arresting reminder of how global trade currents are shifting.

Charter orders all workers to keep showing up (permalink)
My local monopoly ISP is Charter. They're terrible in every single way. What's more, my city, Burbank, owns 100GB fiber that runs under my home's foundation slab, but I can't access it because of Charter's deal with the city. In addition to delivering slow-as-molasses connectivity at nosebleed prices (and relentlessly advertising upsells, dozens every week, print and digital), the company is also forcing all workers to show up in person during the pandemic – even those who could work from home.
They basically forced Nick Wheeler, an engineer who complained about this, to resign, calling his short, measured complaint about the policy "irresponsible," accusing him of "inciting fear."
https://techcrunch.com/2020/03/16/charter-coronavirus-work-home/
Charter gives its workers a single annual week's worth of sick-leave. Workers have to use that leave time if they are worried about contracting or transmitting coronavirus. Medical advice for coronavirus infections is to self-isolate for two weeks, though.
Even other telcos (AT&T, Comcast) are asking workers to work from home. Charter CEO Tom Rutledge has doubled down on his infect-the-world policy, because "While back office and management functions can be performed remotely, they are more effective from the office."
Charter is a tremendous beneficiary of public largesse. It gets access to our rights-of-way, something they couldn't hope to afford at market rates. It received billions in tax-cuts (which it squandered on stock buybacks). The company got Net Neutrality dismantled, and is given monopolies wherever it operates.
This largesse is predicated on the idea that Charter views itself as a steward and can be trusted with monopoly self-regulation. If you had any doubt that the company can't be trusted to pour piss out of a boot with instructions printed on the heel, this should dispel it forever.
What I'm saying is, if you ever have a Charter exec in your home, count the spoons before you let him leave.

MAGA firefighters dismiss coronavirus as Democrat hoax (permalink)
"IAFF Union Firefighters for Trump" is a 27,000 member Facebook group of first responders who split from their union over its endorsement of Biden; Trump himself has endorsed the group.
Today, it is full of firefighters and EMTs who say that coronavirus is no big deal.
Some of the group's members are posting evidence to the contrary from their working experience, talking about the devastation they're witnessing firsthand. Their colleagues reply with poop emojis and "Trump2020."
https://www.propublica.org/article/facebook-firefighters-corona#179168
The group is infected with the conspiracy theory that coronvirus is a panic cooked up by Democrats to discredit Trump, or that it's a Chinese bioweapon, an idea that Trump and his Congressional and Senate supporters have tacitly (or explicitly) endorsed.
This is especially worrying as EMTs and firefighters are at high risk of contracting coronovirus. If they don't take the risk seriously, they could spread it to vulnerable people, or reduce emergency capacity while they are quarantined (they also risk their own health).
Group founder Kelly Hallman told Propublica that "There's never been this much hoopla given to the other things. They're doing it to crash the economy and make Trump look bad…If you had to point a finger at why the leftist media and the left in general has a smile on their face about this, it's the Dow. My wife and kids are scared, believing what they're seeing on TV. I'm telling them it's not as bad as the media makes out."

Flatter Me, a compliments card game (permalink)
Flatter Me is Ami Baio's latest kickstarted card-game: "a two-player game for all ages with 250 unique compliments to play with friends, family, and partners."

Its creator Ami Baio specialises in games that turn on kindness and connection; her last project was "You Don't Know Me."

Baio is seeking $12k in pre-orders and is delivers in Oct.

American Airlines blew billions, now it wants a bailout (permalink)
Since 2014, American Airlines has accumulated a $30B debt. It did so while paying its shareholders $15B through stock buybacks, and while raising prices on fliers, nickel-and-diming on bag charges and other extras. Now its industry group – whose members spent 96% of their free cash-flow on buybacks – is seeking a $50B coronavirus bailout, with no strings attached. That's 300% more than the industry got after 9/11.
This is shareholder capitalism working as intended. As Matt Levine writes, "it is optimized to extract money for shareholders when things go well and minimize the amount of shareholder money that is at risk when things go very wrong."
http://link.mail.bloombergbusiness.com/join/4wm/moneystuff-signup
But as Tim Wu writes, bailouts should come with strings attached. The airlines engineered this situation for themselves. If we let them socialized their losses and privatize their gains (again), they'll do it again (again).
https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/16/opinion/airlines-bailout.html
"Change fees should be capped at $50 and baggage fees tied to some ratio of costs. The change fees don't just irritate; they are a drag on the broader economy, making the transport system less flexible and discouraging otherwise efficient changes to travel plans."
"We should end the airlines' pursuit of smaller and smaller seats, which are not only uncomfortable and even physically harmful, but also foster in-flight rage and make the job of flight attendants nigh unbearable."
"Finally, we have allowed too much common ownership, permitting large shareholders to take a stake in each of the major airlines, creating incentives to collude instead of compete."
As Naomi Klein has reminded us, the Shock Doctrine (can) cut both ways: the Great Depression catalyzed transformative change and the New Deal. Let's not permit this disaster be seized by the people responsible for it.

How to split a single ventilator for four patients (permalink)
In 2008, Greg Neyman and Charlene Babcock Irvin published "A Single Ventilator for Multiple Simulated Patients to Meet Disaster Surge" in the peer-reviewed Society for Academic Emergency Medicine journal.
https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1197/j.aem.2006.05.009
In this video, Dr Babcock demonstrates how to split a single ventilator to safely and effectively treat up to four patients.
As she points out, there have been no studies of this, but it has been (temporarily) used successfully in the field.

Bigoted Republican Congressjerk votes against coronavirus relief because it might cover same-sex partnerships (permalink)
You may not get paid leave during the coronavirus crisis in part because Rep Andy Biggs (R-AZ) voted against it because his homophobia was more salient than his empathy.
https://theintercept.com/2020/03/17/coronavirus-stimulus-bill-andy-biggs/
He claimed (wrongly) that this was novel federal legislation in that it included domestic partnerships.
He was objecting to the provision of assistance to family members, including "biological, foster, or adopted child, a stepchild, a child of a domestic partner."
As Lee Fang writes, "The exact same legislative text around domestic partnerships and committed relationships is found in several bills in Congress, including paid sick leave legislation proposed as far back as 2015."
Biggs also lied and said that he objected to coronavirus relief because it would repeal the Hyde Amendment ("Two provisions that have nothing to do with the coronavirus are basically thrown into this thing. That's par for the course for the left").
The bill does not repeal the Hyde Amendment.
The Republican Party, folks. The party of death and poverty and tragedy and hate. Remember that in November.

Epidemiology and public health in 14 minutes (permalink)
Epidemiologist Dr. Ross Kauffman and sf writer Tobias Buckell teamed up to produce this short video explaining the costs of a runaway coronavirus epidemic to explain the need for drastic measures to their local Ohio town council.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqgINxGQB5w
It's a spectacular piece of science communications: grave without being alarmist, calm and measured, informative and plainspoken. It's a really important piece of video and I hope you'll watch it.

3D printed ventilator hero got a patent threat (permalink)
Remember the heartwarming story of the Italian makers who volunteered to fix their hospital's busted ventilators with 3D printed parts that they designed and produced on the spot?
https://pluralistic.net/2020/03/16/tiktoks-secrets/#3dp-breathfree
It turns out that these makers weren't just saving lives, they were also taking a legal risk. That's because when they asked the manufacturer for help with the project, the manufacturer countered by threatening to sue them for patent infringement.
https://it.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-manca-la-valvola-per-uno-strumento-di-rianimazione-e-noi-la-stampiamo-in-3d-accade-nellospedale-di-chiari-brescia/
The part they printed cost them 1 euro, while replacing the system would cost a reported EUR10,000.
In a heartfelt, and soul-searching post, one of the people behind the project says he won't try to distribute the files he created.
https://www.facebook.com/Ing.Cristian.Fracassi/posts/10222339428782713
I can't help but wonder if he's hoping to mollify the corporation whose threats he ignored to help save lives.

If nothing is for sale, how will covid stimulus work? (permalink)
I'm a believer in Modern Monetary Theory and the idea that state deficit spending is not intrinsically inflationary – only when the state is trying to procure things the private sector wants, so they get into a bidding war.
https://www.vox.com/future-perfect/2019/4/16/18251646/modern-monetary-theory-new-moment-explained
In theory, the covid contraction is a great candidate for MMT stimulus. If people are stockpiling cash and thus eliminating their discretionary spending (40% of US GDP!), then the state can procure the discretionary items without triggering inflation.
Or there could be a hybrid, such as distributing vouchers to the public, redeemable for discretionary purchases – instead of bailing out aviation, we could buy people plane tickets, for example.
But that runs into a big problem: there's another reason people aren't making discretionary purchases, which is that those goods and services aren't available (manufacture has been disrupted by social distancing) or aren't safe (flying is incompatible with social distancing).
In this case, it seems to me that stimulus spending runs the risk of being inflationary (when everyone tries to redeem their plane ticket vouchers at once) or useless (people throw away their vouchers). Stimulus + supply shock = ??
That's not to rule out stimulus altogether, but it does suggest that the stimulus needs to be targeted, especially considering the size of the bailout that Wall Street is bandying about: trillions, in a matter of days.
https://www.newyorker.com/news/our-columnists/the-coronavirus-calls-for-wartime-economic-thinking
The GOP is calling for a $1,000/person bailout, but as @yvessmith says, this isn't much when it comes to the immediate expenses that affected people need to cover, like rent, mortgage, and, of course, treating covid-related illness without insurance.
https://www.nakedcapitalism.com/2020/03/why-sending-1000-checks-to-everyone-wont-solve-the-coronavirus
Maybe, instead, help to cover mortgage and rent, along with anti-eviction/foreclosure rules; help with utilities, expanded food aid, and swift Medicare for All. Then, once the crisis is passed, a big stimulus package – for people, not banks – that gets us buying stuff again?
TBH, I don't know. It's weird to feel skeptical of stimulus, given how valuable demand-side relief would have been over the past decade+. Obviously we don't want another 2008 plute bonanza giveaway, but we also don't want to inject ever more money to chase ever-fewer goods.

How to make your own toilet paper (permalink)
Making toilet paper at home is a pretty on-the-nose craft to try with your covid-isolated kiddos. You need newsprint, leaves/grass (as a cellulosic binder) and baby oil.
https://www.ehow.com/how_4514690_make-toilet-paper.html
Soak the paper until ink is mostly gone, slowly boil with leaves/grass, simmer 1h, bring to boil for 30m, adding water and skimming foam. Remove, ladle out excess water. Mix 4tbsps of baby oil in with pulp. Scoop pulp onto a towel, press with a rolling pin.
Gently beat out lumps with a rubber mallet, add another towel on top. Cover with a board and add weights. Wait 30m. Flip over, remove towel and leave to dry in sun. Cut into strips and use (sparingly).

Plague precautions from 1665 (permalink)
ORDERS CONCEIVED AND PUBLISHED BY THE LORD MAYOR AND ALDERMEN OF THE CITY OF LONDON CONCERNING THE INFECTION OF THE PLAGUE, 1665
https://brucesterling.tumblr.com/post/612917764072636416/orders-conceived-and-published-by-the-lord-mayor
Every parish needs examiners. Refuse duty and you go to prison: "persons of good sort and credit chosen and appointed by the alderman, his deputy, and common council of every ward, by the name of examiners, to continue in that office the space of two months at least."
Examiners must "inquire and learn from time to time what houses in every parish be visited, and what persons be sick, and of what diseases…[I]f they find any person sick of the infection, to give order to the constable that the house be shut up."
Infected homs get 24/7 surveillance two watchmen: "these watchmen have a special care that no person go in or out of such infected houses whereof they have the charge, upon pain of severe punishment."
They'll also get you groceries and lock up your shop.
Women "of honest reputation" are appointed by physicians as "searchers" to inspect the dead and determine cause of death. Searchers are helped by newly appointed "able and discreet chirurgeons," charged with ensuring that "a true report made of the disease."
Nurse-keepers have to be quarantined for 28 days after their patients die.
If plague is found in a house, the whole household is locked in for 28 days. Prior to sequestration, their personal effects have to be aired, treated with fire, and then perfumed. Anyone known to have visited a plague house is locked down for 28 days, along with their household, with the same airing, flaming and perfuming business.
Plague-dead may only be buried after sunset and before sunrise, with no mourners in attendance. No sermons or eulogies allowed. Graves must be 6 feet deep. All funerals are banned. Personal effects of the plague-dead must be destroyed, not given away or sold.
Public notice: "Every house visited be marked with a red cross of a foot long in the middle of the door.. and with these usual printed words… 'Lord, have mercy upon us,' to be set close over the same cross, there to continue until lawful opening of the same house."
Cab drivers can continue as normal, but if they carry someone thought to have plague they have to retire their hackney-coaches for 5-6 days and give them a thorough airing.
[[I sense that this may be a weak spot in the whole plan]]
There's also new sanitation rules requiring regular sweepings and rakings of "filth" from the streets, with all the human waste being dumped far from the city and not in local gardens. Smelly or rotten food-sales are banned.
Cops are charged with sweeping up and punishing beggars, who are banned from the streets.
No live entertainment: "all plays, bear-baitings, games, singing of ballads, buckler-play, or such-like causes of assemblies of people be utterly prohibited."
All restaurants are closed. Feasting is banned.
Bars are OK, but under suspicion, and must close by 9PM. The rule covers "tippling in taverns, ale-houses, coffee-houses, and cellars."
[[Again, this seems like a weak spot]]

University of Phoenix Degrees Reviews & Tips
Normally, college degrees aren't prerequisites for professional certificates, although there are always exceptions. Any online degree probably is not able to compete with a conventional university degree. If you take an exact career-specific degree in a place like nursing, guarantee the school is accepted by the most crucial accreditors in that specialty.
Tumblr media
Students become overwhelmed, he explained. A student can decide to have mediocre grades and attendance and accept a mediocre grade should they wish to. Students at Western Governors who choose to go for a B.S. in Business Management is going to be rewarded with the extensive knowledge and skills they will need to start or supplement their careers. For more amazing articles on the University of Phoenix degrees check us out on here
The University of Phoenix is intended to earn money. Another way to rate the University of Phoenix is to have a look at what sort of professors they have. While many people can have known of the University of Phoenix a single bad news story will carry much greater weight as it represents a far larger part of what that person knows about the University of Phoenix. The University of Phoenix isn't exactly an inexpensive school to attend. It is perhaps one of the best options available to you today. Overall, it consistently ranks as one of the top online colleges, due in no small part to the length of time the University has been in business, along with its enrollment statistics. The University of Phoenix on the opposite hand is a small bit different.
What You Don't Know About University of Phoenix Degrees
Be certain to refer to individual schools to find out what you have to apply in the program of your selection. It's possible the programs could be completed online, based on where they're in the program and the number of credits remains till they reach graduation, he explained. Approved programs are located in accredited schools. A number of programs might also appear past the bachelors, as in the event of some pre-pharmacy programs. On-line certificate programs have a tendency to provide some scheduling flexibility, making them perfect for students who have jobs or other responsibilities to contemplate.
