@seraphicsoprano PENNED: "stay with me" / seraphicsoprano
HE faces away from her now, too ashamed to face her in the light of morning. How DISGUSTED she must be -- how HORRIFED at seeing the monster she has lain with! Though he hid his face from her now, she could still see the scars the crisscrossed his back, the gauntness of his frame. Selfishly, he had DEFILED and SPOILED her; neither of them had been in their right minds the previous night.
AND yet, he feels her gentle touch upon his back, hears the soft plea for him to stay leave her lips. His back tenses, the feeling of her touch ALIEN against his sensitive scars.
Tumblr media
" I...cannot, " he chokes, still refusing to face her. " I....I have violated you, and I cannot condemn you to a life of darkness with me. Oh, Christine, I am sorry.... ". Tears stain the silken sheets beneath them. " This was a mistake....nothing but a mistake, and you are beholden to me no longer. "

lnd opinions but they get longer as i go
i like ramin’s voice more than ben’s, but ben plays the phantom better
sierra > anna
once upon another time has the worst flow of lyrics in the whole show it sounds so clunky
beauty underneath reprise is unnecessary it’s just another ensemble number that doesn’t actually add anything. still a good song tho
as much as i love that one boot where meg hold christine’s dead body, raoul coming to hold his wife is 100x more impactful. like while the phantom and gus are having their moment, raoul just. silently holds chris. and i love it.
in relation to the last one, i want to see a production where raoul AND meg hold christine
cutting the phantom out of the meg/mme giry arguments about the show makes no fucking sense because it’s just giry blaming MEG for the phantom not being there is so stupid and i hate it
OLC fleck is a gothic hottie smash
cutting the “raoul please… don’t drink anymore” line was the worst decision the revision team could ever make fuck them
raoul’s alcoholic tendencies and anger at christine are justified. his actions aren’t ok, but he’s coming from a place where it’s understandable.

So, I read The Phantom Of Manthattan
In its entirety. @baepsyche had tried to dissuade me, she did her best, but I wanted to wade through the sewage that book is by myself and form my own opinion on it. I mean, I had a very clear image of how bad it would be when I heard @lindsayetumbls give the rundown in the Musicalsplaining episode of Love Never Dies, but I had no idea how bad it could actually be!
TL:DR The book is a mess that makes no sense as a sequel to whatever, nor it makes sense on its own because of how it’s structured and written. It sucks, it’s poorly written and isn’t worth the paper it’s printed on. Love Never Dies is a fucking masterpiece worth of all the awards for musical theater out there in comparison.
I mean... I’ve read bad books in my life. Once upon another time I handled a blog dedicated to poor literature - both printed and online - I’ve read my big fat share of bad literature, I binged on the Fifty Shades trilogy but Sweet Jesus Christ POM makes 50 Shades look like high art!
Let’s start from the beginning, shall we?
1. Too many POV characters. There’s like... the Phantom, three different journalists two of which are there for one chapter alone and never return, there’s the priest, and a couple more I forgot. But... WHY? Why so many different POV characters in a book so short I literally finished it in a couple half hour long sessions? WHY? It makes no sense from a narration standpoint, it’s crowded and confusing and voyeuristic! Also, never including Christine’s POV you diminish her character to a paper thin token. Also, where’s Raoul?
2. Speaking of which, Raoul. Poor guy, the book shits on him from chapter 1 (the only barely readable chapter of the book), and by doing so right in the beginning the “big reveal” of Pierre/Gustave true parentage feels more of a “captain obvious” joke rather than a “I would have never guessed!”. Not that it is such a grand plot twist in Love Never Dies I mean, but Jesus, not like this!
3. Yeah, speaking of that. People shit on Love Never Dies for “Beneath A Moonless Sky” and the sex scene that never was, but this is way worse! At least the song gives you a context, a moment you can at least imagine what the hell happened and maybe even why, but here? Nothing! They don’t even TALK about that, let alone explain to the reader that those two had sex! What the fuck! Pierre just happened to be born and Raoul never even questioned his parentage! Or maybe he does, he just doesn’t care since he fullfills the nobility’s expectations of a male heir, who knows. HE DOESN’T SAY ANYTHING RELEVANT IN THE WHOLE BOOK! No wonder in LND they turned him in the abusive alcoholic, they had no material to build on in this... thing.
4. The Phantom and the backstory. I appreciate the fact that they tried to give him a past, and I really liked the fact that Forsythe took his time to even give at least a fraction of time/place context to the original book that hasn’t one by figuring out Leroux had a post-electricity Palais Garnier in mind, but the backstory for the Phantom... I’ve read more interesting fanfics. I haven’t read Kay’s Phantom, I have it but I haven’t started it yet so I can’t make comparisons, but seriously, I’ve really read fanfics retellings of Erik’s past more imaginative and fleshed out that this book.
Which leads me to...
5. Satanism? Really? Satanism? Of all the shock cards Forsythe could have dropped on the table, Satanism? Listen guys, I’m a metalhead, I listen to stuff that people have called “the music of the devil” (classic rock, blues and jazz included) for the past fifty years on daily basis, one of my favourite songs of all time is Emperor’s “Inno A Satana” which literally means “Hymn to Satan” in Italian. My parents were scared to death when I started dabbling in heavy metal because of the whole “satanism” thing, I know my shit about satanism (I actually have done my research), and let me tell you that shit is old. Like, dusty and moldy old, not just not fashionable, it’s such an old story no one finds it so shocking anymore. So... WHY? It makes no sense, drives no point in the story, it’s a damn McGuffin that isn’t even relevant anymore! It wasn’t at the time the book was published (the whole trial to Judas Priest, Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne had happened like... 10 years prior the book was written so... meh) and I really hope it will never be again because... seriously... nope, it’s stupid and pointless, why on Earth it was used as a plot device I have no fuckin’ idea.
6. Darius. Dude has no backstory, no descriptor except his greed and “devotion” to money and wealth. Oh and he smokes hashish. That’s it. We’ve got no other data on him. Jesus Christ, for the antagonist of the story he surely is kind of... bland? I mean, he’s non existent! Such a cop out, like really... WHY! At least Meg falling for the Phantom and getting all jealous crazy makes a teeny tiny bit of sense, but this guy? Bland, children’s book cutout satanism aside, which is a terrible choice of moving force for reasons above, the dude himself is so terribly fleshed out (ID, he isn’t) that his motivations are unclear at best and laughable at worst. You are the Phantom’s face in the world, he has so much money that if you start putting a side a grand here and a grand there he wouldn’t notice, you have power to make deals in his behalf, why don’t you just get the money and go? Have you learned nothing by working with the Phantom? Can’t you make your own money and become filthy rich yourself so you can honor your damn god  on your fucking own? Don’t you think your god would appreciate more you making your own wealth instead of pigging on the Phantom’s back and take only morsels of his own wealth? Fuck this book is a mess.
7. Christine. I mean, she’s rarely there, for the time she is she’s either a hysterical mess or a an angel on stage, and she is supposed to be the reason everything happens. In reality, it looks like everything happens in spite of her. She has no power on her own, she’s like a piece of wood floating in the sea during a storm.
8... No, I’m not going further with this. I could shit on this book for the whole day, but I have other things to do, better things to do.
I’m going to wash my eyes with bleach now.

@multistoty PENNED: (Again feel free to ignore and can be outside our timeline, gustav @multistoty ) “I-I think- mother practically starts with a blush and seems to be loving a daydream when talking about you, mr. Y, but- when I said that I wished you were my father, she didn’t get upset. Just merely like I had uncovered some well kept secret.- You have never lied to me.”
ERIK ( now better known as the enigmatic MR. Y ) simply looked to Gustav with wide eyes. He was an intelligent boy -- and with the way he and Christine acted around each other ( and the way she spoke of him, apparently ), he was bound to find out the truth sooner or later. But was it his place to tell?
Tumblr media
" NO, I have not, " he replies simply. He had never exactly told Gustav the truth either. " ...I needn't be your father for us to spend time together. " Neither a lie nor the whole truth. " ...Why do you wish I was your father, Gustav? You are...happy at home, yes? "

Hi there! First of all: Love your blog, have so for years. Now I've been recently watching a bunch of different musical productions from the VBW in Vienna and it reminded me that I still needed to watch their POTO concert from 2012 and the LND concert from 2013. I saw your gif sets but I was wondering if you had any more thoughts on them, especially their LND 'production'? Curiously the concerts had the same director but not the same cast; maybe they didn't want to suggest too much continuity :D
Oh boy, the two Vienna concerts!
I do have some thoughts, and more so on their LND production than POTO. Their POTO concert was interesting - random projections and interpretive dancers ahoy! - but somehow less memorable, for whatever reason, though the cast was quite good: Oliver Arno was absolutely a sweetheart Raoul, and hopefully Lisa Antoni gets a shot at Christine one day.
Now the LND concert... that was absolutely unique. I really think that the production was going for a take where Raoul and Christine absolutely do love each other (helped by Julian Looman being a very kind Raoul, especially for LND, and having great chemistry and interactions with Milica Jovanovic’s Christine and with Gustave), but Christine and the Phantom just love each other more. That’s my only explanation for why Christine and the Phantom start a make-out session five seconds after he meets her for the first time in ten years, or why they spend much of ‘Once Upon Another Time’ with the Phantom in Christine’s lap, or Christine’s orgasmic reaction to his music. Drew Sarich also aids this interpretation by being a pretty sympathetic Phantom, with these big sad-puppy eyes that seemed designed to tear your heart out.
Though I will say that it also majorly helped that I could not understand a word of the production. LND is just easier to bear if you pay no attention to the lyrics.

love never dies omg. I have always disliked it because of the plot and how ooc everyone is, and how it just takes away all of phantom's growth... but I just watched it and the songs were wonderful. Beauty Underneath rocks lmao. And Beneath the moonless sky holy hell. The ending makes me teary too, even though I don't ship Phantom and Christine. And when Erik sings Love Never Dies toGustave after Christine dies I wanted to cry. I didn't expect to like it as much as I do haha.
YES!! I hated LND so much but watching the performance in youtube made me cry so much.
The Music is gorgeous! Once upon another time sounds so pretty!! I don't ship Erik and Christine (which is probably obvious from my username) but the finale made me cry- the "kiss me one last time" line messed me up
Story wise and as a sequel to POTO, I hate it a lot- But the music, sets and costumes (or at least SOME costumes...) are amazing!

Listen, Love Never Dies is SO AWFUL, and I love it SO MUCH.
Also, most of the songs are absolute bops in like 8 different ways if you ignore the 2005 Wattpad fic poly line that they advance.
Till I hear you sing? Beautiful ballad with that good Yearning ™, perfect key to octave up for soprano ladies, but high enough in the OG key for altos to do, and in a baritone that is pretty much accessible for most guys. Just ignore the fact that he’s singing about a woman he manipulated for years, and according to LND, left after taking her virginity, therefore making the yearning ENTIRELY HIS OWN FUCKING FAULT
Only for You? Such a fun, carnival number,an absolute blast. Just don’t think about how it’s Erik exploiting the very people he should most empathize with.
Mother did you See? An absolute wonder for acting. I will wring an audition cut out of this song if it KILLS ME. Sad what they did to Madame Giry, tho.
Look With Your Heart? A lovely little diddy about not judging a book by it’s cover. Decide whether she’s talking about her now abusive husband or her formerly abusive baby daddy at any given point in the song.
Beneath a Moonless Sky? HOT DAMN. CLASSIEST SONG ABOUT A ONE NIGHT STAND. The CHEMISTRY. The PASSION. The YEARNING. But we’re supposed to believe that after becoming a man who could be worthy of her, he got sought out by the woman he’d been infatuated with, went three rounds with her, and then LEFT? Okay, ALW, sure.
Once Upon Another Time? A simple, beautiful commiseration on what could have been. Immediately followed by Erik losing every shred of character development he got in POTO.
Dear Old Friend? A fantastic quartet. No real narrative issues, Just the overall plot of the show. A strong piece I’d love to direct.
Devil Take the Hindmost? Such. A. Good. Duet. The tension. I love this song so much, tbh. Two guys basically making a bet on a singular decision changing the entire life of a woman and her child without consulting either.
Bathing Beauty? Such a classic vaudeville number! Light! Fun! So many opportunities to shine as an actress and comedienne! A striptease written for a girl who clearly has some Undealt with sexual trauma that she’s throwing herself into performing to try to prove herself worthy of a man’s love.
Love Never Dies? An absolutely gorgeous aria. Written by aforementioned manipulator about their relationship. In context, very possessive.
The finale? The theme for all of Meg’s songs here is the acting opportunities, and this is no exception. Her breakdown is aces, if you ignore the misogyny. Erik trying to talk her down and failing just as it seems he’s getting through to her? 💯. But it’s literally a soap opera, man.
Tldr the songs in LND are pretty great out of context, and I want to perform them all.
