Simon's morals evolution

I just finished my first rewatch of season two and I wanted to talk about Simon's moral compass.

From what we see from the get go he has a very strong division between right and wrong, for him it's very much black and white. However, he's not afraid of bending this borders he's made when he can see a positive outcome (ex: when he gets the booze for August so he and Sara can go to the party). As much as he always tries to do what he thinks is "the right thing" he doesn't let anyone piss on him, like he literally tells Sara in s1ep6.

I think these strong moral go through very drastic changes after the video comes out. He realizes that the world it's not as simple as someone owes me money, I'm gonna get it back or you lied to me, that's wrong because, as we know from season two, what bothered Simon about Wilhelm denying it was him on the video is not the fact that he denied it, it's the fact that he told Simon he wouldn't make a statement at all.

As the show gets darker and Simon himself does as well he understands that he's in no position to make demands, that's why he ultimately decides not go to the police. This post by @littlebabywille explains the turning point perfectly.

To everyone upset that Simon is not the sweet little baby they knew in season one or that he was selfish or whatever I just wanna say YES he changed, you would too if you'd gone through the same things as him and you sound just like Marcus when you say he's selfish "for playing the victim" because, once again, HE IS THE VICTIM AS MUCH AS WILHELM IS

I think it's very unfair to say that Omar and Tommy didn't have chemistry. They had a chemistry of a different type- they portrayed a forced relationship that was doomed because Simon and Marcus were never on the same page. (It reminds me of the relationship between August and Felice, btw, with th exception that August never had genuine feelings for Felice either).

The peak of Simon and Marcus' so called romantic chemistry happened during their meet cute, when Simon was intrigued and flattered when someone approached him not as 'the kid from that vid' but because of his talent and his beauty. He smiled shyly and was glad to have this new acquaintance. But not enough to add him on Insta immediately. And then he met the love of his (not so long) life and it was hard and painful to see him acting like nothing wrong had happened between them. I think the most painful thing was that Wille didn't realise how much he had hurt him, and that was why Simon felt he had to move on not be hurt further.

As I said, Simon and Marcus' relationship didn't form naturally. It was forced. Simon added Marcus on Insta only because he needed a ride, he even sat at the back, because it was only a ride for him. He went to meet Marcus at karaoke because his friends said it would help him to ease the pain and overcome his feelings, for the same reason he went to his apartment for 'Netflix and chill' and he didn't leave him because Marcus convinced him not to, and so on, and so forth. Simon thought being with this person was a RATIONAL and RIGHT thing to do, not because he really wanted to. Their interactions were meant to seem WRONG, DRY and NOT IT because that's what they were for Simon. Only Wille, blind from jealousy, and Marcus, unable to read the room and get hints, could see it as smth romantic.

And that is why we cry seeing Simon and Wille finally kissing at the ball, because though it happens behind another person's back it finally FEELS right.

I agree. They didn’t really get the chance to have good chemistry because they were doomed to fail from the start. Neither of them were in the relationship for the right reason. All of their interactions were a direct response to Simon being hurt by Wille or angry at him. At the beginning of the season especially Wille was behaving very selfishly and not really acknowledging how much he hurt Simon, which ended up hurting Simon even more. @littlebabywille made an excellent post detailing that every one of Marcus and Simon’s interactions is a direct response to something happening between Wille and Simon. They didn’t really have a chance to have great chemistry. Maybe if Simon wasn’t so hung up on Wille and Marcus didn’t choose to be a manipulative asshole, things could’ve worked out.

There were definitely vibes between them in the first meeting scene and the karaoke scene, but it quickly goes downhill when Simon comes to Marcus’ house and we see he’s clearly trying to recreate what he experienced with Wille and it just doesn’t work.
