Lisa Janti (born Irena Ludmilla Vladimirovna Augustinovich; July 5, 1933 – March 7, 2023), early known during her film career as Lisa Montell, was an  actress, author and activist.
She appeared in films and on television during the 1950′s before turning to advocacy and service to various disadvanted groups.
Most of her career was in the Western genre. Her first role may have been in 1954 in the TV series The Public Defender, based on the film of the same name. On television, she appeared in 1955 as Rosa on the TV western Cheyenne in the episode "Border Showdown" (Showdown in Paso Also). In 1956 in Jane Wyman's Fireside Theater episode of "A Time To Live", in the Sugarfoot show episode "Guns for Big Bear" in 1958 and in the 1960 S2E15 episode "Pigeon and Hawk" in Bat Masterson. In 1962 she was in Combat! episode "A Day in June". In 1972, She appeared in Linda in TV Show Where will my feet take me today? until she retired at the age of 55.
Janti was known as the "Starlet of many faces" probably portraying more diverse ethnic roles though she was Polish including Polynesian, Native American, Mexican, Burmese, French, Italian, Spanish, east Indian and Persian – roles with dubious cultural and sexist stereotypes. Among the productions Janti was cast in are She Gods of Shark Reef, Ten Thousand Bedrooms, Pearl of the South Pacific, Jump Into Hell, The Lone Ranger and the Lost City of Gold, and World Without End.  (Wikipedia)

Year-End Poll #46: 1995
Tumblr media
[Image description: a collage of photos of the 10 musicians and musical groups featured in this poll. In order from left to right, top to bottom: Coolio, TLC, TLC, Seal, Boyz II Men, Real McCoy, Mariah Carey, Madonna, Monica, Montell Jordan. End description]
More information about this blog here
This year we're seeing several movements in R&B. Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men are continuing their streaks from previous years, while groups like TLC are reaching their commercial peaks (if only their treatment from the label reflected that). Seal, a London-based artist who previously worked with funk, blues, and acid house, would cross over to both The States and the Billboard Hot 100 with the soul single Kiss from a Rose. 1995 also marks the debut of fourteen-year-old Monica, who would become one of the defining R&B artists of the decade.
Rap is also having its moment in mainstream pop culture. I talked briefly about the rise of G-funk and reality rap a few polls ago. Here, we're seeing more of that rise with the late Coolio's Gangsta's Paradise. We're also starting to see rap and R&B start to mix together. Nowadays, the blending of the two genres is incredibly common. New jack swing already helped to bridge the gap between the styles. But with artists like Montell Jordan providing both R&B vocals and hip-hop flow, to Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes' rap verses with TLC, to Gangsta's Paradise soul cover in the chorus, this blend is starting to become much more common. The Stevie Wonder sample in Gangsta's Paradise is notable for another reason. While hip-hop was built on the art of sampling, this specific style of vocal sampling would grow in popularity this decade, most notably from the work of Bad Boy Records and Sean Combs (F.K.A. Puff Daddy/[P.] Diddy). While controversial at the time, we will continue to see songs exemplifying this shift in the mainstream rap sound -- especially in the decades to come.

TLC - Red Light Special (Official HD Video)  March 4, 1995 - 29 Years Ago Today: TLC had the Hot Shot Debut at No. 39 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart with their single, "Red Light Special." This Babyface-penned song was the R&B trio's 8th chart entry and it became their 5th Top Ten when it peaked at No. 2 for 3 weeks beginning April 15, 1995 but was prevented from the No. 1 position which was occupied by Montell Jordan's Platinum-certified hit, "This Is How We Do It," which began a 7-week run at the top the same day. Sadly, group member Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes died in an automobile crash on April 25, 2002, at the age of 30.

Slick Rick is still The Ruler.
The rapper once known as "MC Ricky D" has built a legacy on 35 years of lyricism, style and artistry. Yes, he's arguably rap's greatest storyteller; a style icon and dropped one of the greatest debut albums in the history of debut albums. But when one considers how much of his career was put on hold, when one considers just how immaculate his flow remained even as his style evolved and times changed; Rick's run is truly remarkable.
He burst out the gate with the uber-classic Great Adventures Of Slick Rick, an album that boasted at least four bonafide all-time great songs, and a platinum-seller that cemented him as a star on Def Jam. His life would take a dramatic turn soon afterwards, and Rick found himself headed to prison in 1991, the same year he dropped The Ruler's Back. That album was followed by 1994s Behind Bars, completed on work furlough. Rick would see release in late 1996, and he dropped his fourth album, The Art Of Storytelling in early 1999. It was Rick's first album since his debut not recorded under duress, and critics hailed it as his creative and commercial comeback.
So that's the short version of Slick Rick's story. We decided to rank our favorite 25 cuts from the legendary MC Ricky D.
#26
"I LIKE" - MONTELL JORDAN FEAT. SLICK RICK [BONUS SONG]
Our BONUS SONG pick is a celebrated classic guest spot! The R&B star and The Ruler team up on this hit from the "Nutty Professor" soundtrack.
#25
"CAN'T SHAKE US" FEAT. SPECIAL K
With this rare mixtape track from 2002, Rick teams up with former Treacherous Three legend Special K to kick bars over a sparse beat.
#24
"WHY, WHY, WHY"
Slick Rick has always had a knack for off-color songs about relationships; and this laid-back groover is Rick once again chastising a woman for her wandering eye--and admitting his own infidelity.
#23
"A LOVE THAT'S TRUE, PT. 1"
Speaking of that whole "chastising..." thing. With a beat that echoes his production on "Hey Young World" years earlier, Rick once again dogs out a trifling woman...or two...or three.

#22
"CAN'T DANCE TO A TRACK THAT AIN'T GOT NO SOUL"
Slick Rick dropped two singles in 2019 that let the world know the Ruler was still the Ruler. One was this kinetic P-Funk sampling track that was produced by the man himself.
#21
"TREAT HER LIKE A PROSTITUTE"
Not a song that fits neatly into 2022 sensibilities, but it was Slick Rick's first solo single after his days as MC Ricky D. He debuted the track as a solo star in 1988s "Tougher Than Leather" movie.
#20
"IMPRESS THE KID"
Produced by S&S, this track originally appeared on the "Rush Hour" soundtrack, as Rick gets wreck over a bass-heavy groove that sounds so perfectly late 90s you should have to rock a FUBU jersey to listen to it.
#19
"MIDAS TOUCH"
After some years focused more on performing and brand partnerships, Ricky D returned! And he did so in impressive fashion, showcasing his rapid-fire flow on this groovy single, released alongside "Can't Dance To A Track..."
#18
"RUNAWAY"
On what sounds like a spiritual successor to "Mona Lisa," Slick Rick's knack for hooks is kind of an underrated skill in his arsenal. That beat is so chill.
#17
"LICK THE BALLS"
The vulgarity of the hook might make it seem like 2 Live Crew-like raunch here; but no--this is just a good, old fashioned lyrical showcase. Rick blacks out here.
#16
"UNIFY/BE ALRIGHT/LOUD AND CLEAR" - KID CAPRI W/SLICK RICK, MR. CHEEKS, JERMAINE DUPRI, CAM'RON
The album cut features a killer Snoop guest spot; the video version is a medley of tracks tied together by Kid Capri. As usual, Rick does his thing.
#15
"FROZEN" FEAT. RAEKWON
"Even this so-so beat, I make MONSTROUS." If you need a class on lyricism, this song should be on the syllabus. You've got two of the illest of all time, spitting on a track from "The Art Of Storytelling."
#14
"SITTIN' IN MY CAR" (REMIX)
Jermaine Dupri swooped in to remix this single from Rick's 1994 album "Behind Bars." The video would be one of Rick's most popular during his prison stint in the mid-1990s.
#13
"WHO ROTTEN 'EM"
Nod's beat gives Slick Rick chance to flex his parodic British accent again.
#12
"THE RULER'S BACK"
With production credited to the late, great Jam-Master Jay, Rick opened his debut album with an anthem that's as good as any of his hit singles. Jay-Z would famously interpolate the track in 2001.
#11
"IT'S A BOY" (REMIX)
Large Professor worked his magic on this track that originally appeared on 1991s "The Ruler Is Back," but found new life as a banger on 1994s "Behind Bars."
#10
"I RUN THIS"
On "Da Art of Storytelling," Slick Rick returned at the top of his game and one of the best lyrical showcases he ever put to wax is this hotter-than-hell showcase of his skills. Produced by none other than Rev. Run.
#9
"MISTAKES OF A WOMAN IN LOVE WITH OTHER MEN"
No one should need any convincing that Slick Rick is one of the greatest storytellers ever; and this is one of his most poignant looks at dysfunctional relationships.
#8
"THE MOMENT I FEARED"
A song that suddenly became infamous after his 1990 arrest, Rick documents a tailspin of fictional events that would eventually land him in jail.
#7
"STREET TALKIN'" FEAT. OUTKAST
Big Boi has always sounded like a spiritual successor to MC Ricky D, and their chemistry is potent on this classic Jazze Pha-produced single from 1999s "The Art Of Storytelling"
#6
"TEENAGE LOVE"
One of Rick's most iconic songs and one of the Bomb Squad's most R&B-friendly production. It's Rick recounting the trials of being young and thinking you're "in love."
#5
"BEHIND BARS" (DUM DITTY DUM REMIX) FEAT. WARREN G
Warren G brought his uniquely G-Funk styled production to Rick's harrowing-and-hilarious tale of life while incarcerated. This is a master clinic on storytelling.
#4
"MONA LISA"
It's hard to believe one of Slick Rick's most beloved tracks was never even a single; Rick's tale about meeting a shorty at a pizza parlor would become surprisingly influential.
#3
"I SHOULDN'T HAVE DONE IT"
One of Rick's greatest gifts is his knack for taking a story that sounds lighthearted and taking a sharp turn into a dark place. This is one of his best.
#2
"HEY YOUNG WORLD"
Rick produced this impeccable classic himself, a topical look at society that also encourages youth to make good decisions. There are a handful of songs that truly deserve being called "perfect" and this is one.
#1
"CHILDREN'S STORY"
If you documented the greatest rap tracks of all time, this uber-classic would most definitely on the short list. Rick tells a story that's darker than you think; about a triggerhappy teen who goes on a crime spree with tragic results. You know every word. Everybody does.

Delilah Belle Breaks Free on 'Nothing Lasts Forever' Nothing lasts forever, not even the wait for Delilah Belle's first single. The daughter of Lisa Rinna and Harry Hamlin gained international prominence on the hit Bravo show The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and managed to turn that stint into a fashion career alongside her sister Amelia. Together, they've walked for the likes of The Blonds and Tommy Hilfiger. But Delilah Belle is ready to grow beyond the course of a fashion it-girl and has secretly worked on music for a few years now. Her debut single "Nothing Lasts Forever" is the culmination of that work. It features a video that delves into the realm of Belle's interior mind. "Nothing lasts forever/ the pain can't stand the weather" the song declares, with various visual metaphors for depression and heartbreak. But the message at the core of the song is one of hope and resilience, like Belle's own public journey with her health. Check out our interview with Delilah Belle — and the PAPER premiere of "Nothing Lasts Forever" — below.Congratulations on the new single. You’ve teased your transition to music for a bit — how does it feel to finally put this song out in the world?I’m so incredibly excited to share this song and its meaning with the world. However, with the excitement comes a bit of fear, since it is something I’ve been working on silently for so long. It feels like once it’s out my life will change, and I’m so excited because this is what I’m truly so passionate about.Who are some of your inspirations right now when working in the studio?Strong women and men who have opened up about their mental health struggles and who make me feel something when listening to their music. There are so many, but for example, I’d say Lady Gaga, Billie Eilish, Noah Cyrus, John Lennon, Montell Fish and Kina. The video has a strong visual metaphor for depression, and you’ve talked about your own journey with mental health in the past. How did your experiences inform the songwriting process and your musical development?I want to be as real, open and vulnerable as possible. While co-writing I bring my journal, and I literally will read entries from it and express deep things with the other creatives in the room, which I think is a beautiful thing to be able to do. It’s also a form of therapy for me.You’ve lived much of your life in front of cameras, which can lead people to feel like they know everything about you. Have you found that music has been an outlet to express parts of yourself that people might not know about?I do feel like music is an outlet where I can tastefully express myself through sound, lyrics and visuals. People often say to me, “You’re so different in person,” and I take it as a compliment because people are seeing me: my light, my personality and all that I come with. Not just a photo or a little clip from a reality show.Your mom, Lisa, is famous both on and off TV for being something of a business mogul. What sort of advice did she give you while working on your debut?Be kind to everyone. She always continues to support me and reassures me that what I’m putting out is great. She also danced to a preview track on TikTok, which is something of a trademark for her. How did it feel to see that and know it's your music? She’s too funny. I think my first response was, “Thank you so much for doing that dance but are you going out brunching with the girls?” She makes me laugh, the outfit and the dance were both so Lisa because it didn't fit the song, but I loved it.What’s next for Delilah Belle?I’ll leave you with: "You'll see!" And working on my EP.Photography by Amaury Nessaibia https://www.papermag.com/delilah-belle-nothing-lasts-forever-2659607365.html

I think I did decently well at reading in 2022 and the book I'm reading now, I'm not anticipating finishing before the end of the year (it's The Stand by Stephen King), so now is the best time to post about my favorite books of the year.
This year, I read 80 books. 27 of those were the manga Blue Exorcist, and I'm never sure about whether to really count those in my book count, but I am going to count them as 1 big book for the purpose of this list! So, that takes me down to like 54 books.
So, let's go through my list each month, and pick out favorite book(s) from each month! Maybe I won't have a favorite from some months...
Bold means it was a good I really enjoyed! I
I'm going to hide the list under a keep reading line because otherwise this post might be too long for some people!

Picking an actual favorite from these is too hard. I read so many great books this year, and obviously some months I read better than others. Actually, I would probably bold more than I have, but I felt bad about bolding more than like 2 per month, though I did do that in like September.
There were only really like 5 or 6 that I didn't really like, but pushed my way through.
I'm quietly aiming for 100 books next year, but I'm not gonna force myself for that, because whenever I aim for goals like that, it just takes the fun out of reading, so I'm going to set my goal at like 5 books and anything more than that is going to be a win for me!

She Gods of Shark Reef (1958)
Tumblr media
We did a double feature night since our first pick was shorter than expected!
Filmed in Hawaii, this tale features an escaped prisoner and his brother, who become shipwrecked on an island paradise. The land is filled with delectable native women who fill their time enacting strange rituals, and diving in the ocean for pearls. When one of the women is selected by her peers to be sacrificed to the sharks, the good brother, who has fallen for her charms, rescues her and they escape to civilization. The convict brother stays behind and attempts to steal the pearls, instead becoming the designated sacrifice.
So there’s that. Bad representation ahoy but like, given the age of all of these movies that’s just kind of. going to be there in some form or another.
Anyway! Our first Roger Corman film!
An open so cold you’ll feel like you missed twenty minutes of the movie.
The quality of this print was exceptionally awful even by our standards. Crunchy! I think youtube is better.
TBH i don’t have much to say about this one because it really just feels like the most textbook example of Sexy Exotic Natives possible. We all just started chanting FEED THEM TO THE SHARKS about a third of the way in and continued that way for the rest of the movie.
rated Disappointing/Needed More Sharks. gonna put this one on the ‘not a suggested watch’ list. would rather watch Brian Brain Twisters again tbh. best part of movie is the poster, featuring: blonde woman who does not appear in the film.
spoilers but NO ONE GETS EATEN BY SHARKS JUST LIGHTLY NUZZLED WHILE FAKE BLOOD FLOATS AROUND. so disappointing!!!
‘that was very bad roger do better next time’ @gwenfrankenstien
‘im gonna go cyberbully roger’ @its-sixxers
‘not enough shark violence!!’ @beetleboo
