Number Tournament: PI vs FORTY-TWO
Tumblr media
[link to all polls]
pi
seed: 19 (30 nominations)
previous opponent: the fine-structure constant
class: irrational number
definition: despite claims people often make about it, not known to be "normal" (that is, containing every possible sequence of digits). as far as we know, it could run out of fives at some point.
42 (forty-two)
seed: 14 (38 nominations)
previous opponent: googolplex
class: cultural
definition: is the story about "the point" of it as The Answer being that it's the ASCII codepoint for an asterisk actually true. like yeah codepoint (decimal) 42 in ASCII is an asterisk, but is that intentional or is that just a popular fan theory that people keep repeating as fact. I was under the impression that it was just a funny sounding number

The last 7 for the domesticity meme, Wong/Stephen?
What would they do if the other one was hurt?
We actually have a canonical answer for this, for both of them, and that answer is go to the ends of the earth to first see them healed and then avenge whatever did this to them. We saw it in The Oath with Wong’s cancer, and in Strange’s first meeting with Dracula. In terms of something more superficial, however, Stephen is shown in The Oath to be the sort of rather overbearing partner-to-an-injured-person who will keep interfering in treatment because he thinks he knows better and actually has the qualifications to back that up. Wong is, more probably, the one patching up Stephen’s injuries and making dry comments about how he got them to conceal his worry or just because the way Stephen got hurt really was that ridiculous this time.
What are little gestures they do for each other?
Stephen’s hands pain him in cold weather, even after all this time, and Wong has picked up on that from very early in their relationship. He’s a sorcerer too, trained in the same places, and he knows that Stephen would never waste magic on warming his hands when he might any moment be called upon to fight the likes of Dormammu, so Wong does it for him, on winter mornings when the tremors are particularly bad.
On Stephen’s side, he’s very aware that he’s…really not very good at thinking of other people, even now, though at least these days he tries. As such, he’s absolutely religious about tending to Wong after marital arts practice, especially if Wong’s been competing recently, as he does need something to do outside the Sanctum, some link to the wider world, and semi-professional mixed martial arts tournaments are a good way to meet other people with similar interests. Stephen might not be in any state for surgery, but he can handle pulled muscles and ordinary aches and pains. And if he occasionally uses a little magic to ease pain or speed healing…well. He can justify it, as Wong is his closest colleague and ally if Dormammu or similar does attack.
Do they know how the other takes their coffee/tea?
Yes. They’ve been living together since the 1960s, after all. Their tastes have evolved a bit since then, when Wong liked green tea and Stephen was a coffee person. These days, they both tend to prefer tea, although they differ on varieties, as Wong is a bit of a tea snob and has detailed opinions on most sorts of tea, both mundane and otherworldly, whereas Stephen will drink basically anything and hardly notice the difference, possibly due to the fact that his tastebuds are starting to go, or possibly because he’s drunk things called ‘tea’ in several thousand dimensions, and all of them taste wildly different.
Do they feel they see each other enough, or do they have activities that take too much of their time?
They do live and work together, which means they spend most of most days in each other’s company, either researching or just spending time together. On the other hand, Stephen’s responsibilities as Sorcerer Supreme tend to take him away from the Sanctum for long periods, whereas Wong, as guardian of the Sanctum, has to remain behind. ‘Long periods’ here meaning anything from a few days to a century as Stephen experiences time. It can wear on a relationship rather.
Do they friend/follow each other on facebook/tumblr/livejournal/skype/etc?
Stephen has a lurking account on both tumblr and LiveJournal, because these days a lot of occult scholarship happens on the blogosphere, both the legitimate and illegitimate sides of sorcery. As such, the Sorcerer Supreme has a responsibility to keep an eye on it, without actually making it clear that’s what he’s doing. Wong has a facebook account, which is reasonably popular among people who know him from MMA and also a number of New York’s street-level superheroes.
Morning routine?
‘Morning’ is defined more flexibly in the Sanctum Sanctorum than in other places, due to a combination of the irregular nature of time and the irregular hours necessitated by the occult arts, which are not a profession for someone insistent on regular sleep. Stephen in particular is plagued by insomnia and rarely sleeps more than a few scattered hours at a time. Generally speaking, by the time either one of them wakes, the other is either long gone or still sleeping. There are a few routines, however, that they have to do together, such as shaving. Stephen still can’t handle a razor without taking his life in his hands, and so it’s become sort of second nature to handle most grooming rituals together. Breakfast is also generally a requirement, and they split tasks there too, with Wong doing everything that involves actual cooking because…well, again, Stephen’s hands might be better than they were, but he still can’t manage tasks requiring much precision or delicacy, much to his annoyance, since he used to really enjoy cooking back in the day, though he kept that very much to himself, ‘the day’ being the 1960s and all. It’s this necessity-driven division of labour, coupled with a hefty dose of racism, that led to people assuming Wong was Stephen’s manservant, rather than simply a colleague, sometimes bodyguard and later partner who ended up handling most delicate tasks because Stephen’s hands still weren’t recovered enough for them. Checking the Sanctum wards is generally the next step, done by both of them every morning, since it’s far too important not to double-check, and then the day can get started.
How do they make up after a fight?
Generally speaking apologies are a good start. Stephen tends to be fairly insistent on those, when he realises he’s done something wrong at all, because he’s very aware that he’d never have apologised even if he knew he was wrong before, and he really doesn’t ever want to be that man again. Wong’s the one who tends more towards explaining his reasons and self-justification, not having Stephen’s ingrained conviction that a wizard should never explain himself about anything, ever. They tend to forgive fairly quickly, just for necessity’s sake, as the safety of the world is too important to risk by having its defenders divided. However, this very requirement tends to foster a bit of ill-feeling which builds up over time, because they don’t have the luxury of remaining angry at each other as long as they might like.
