So last night I couldn't sleep because I kept asking myself about what kind of footwear would the Bleach characters wear, adapted to today's fashion. I came up with this hc for some of them and I just needed to post it. (Be aware, I know almost nothing about fashion or fashion brands, so if you feel like that's not right just know I did my best)

Renji

- I honestly think Renji would definitely be the kind of guy who would wear these Nikes, the W Dunk High, obviously in red.

- I also believe he would be secretely proud of them, and would clean them every time before going out of the house (even if they'd get dirty in a fight immediately).

-He would probably have at least one more pair that looks the same, maybe with just a little detail difference, in case these ones get broken in a fight.

- I think he buys them alone so people don't see how happy he gets when he finally has them in the bag

Ichigo

- Our main boy would probably wear these Pumas (that I can't remember the full name of)

- They kinda go with his bankai, but it's mostly just a coincidence

- He actually bought them because he needed a new pair, and it was the first pair that caught his eye

- I feel like fashion would not be his priority, he would prefer longevity over anything else and feeling comfy

Orihime

- I am 100% sure she would own at least two of these colorful Converse that she embroidered or decorated herself

- She is the cute and unique type that would wear these anywhere and with anything (even if they don't match)

-They are comfy, but also cute and that's mostly what counts for her, as she buys them for the main bold colors and decorates them however she feels like on the spot

- In my mind, I see him wearing these Reeboks he would look so good in them and he wouldn't even try oh god

- I feel like when buying them, he'd probably look at the sole of the footwear first to ensure it can hold his fighting as well as his shunpo before anything else

- They match his hair and eyes and add a plus to his otherwise kind of plain outfits (he doesn't see it, but he likes the look anyway)

- I see the brand itself mostly bought by adults who already have kids and are tired and take walks to free their mind; and we know he has the tastes of an elder person already and is tired from scolding Matsumoto all day and just wants something nice, nothing out of the ordinary

There are times when life is hard, when it knows periods wherein every single thing that is normally so ordinary now forms an extraordinary addition to the amalgamation of educational stress. 16: what’s your favorite pasta dish? Tortellini with a creamy rosé sauce.

17: what color do you really want to dye your hair? I’m bald so this question is just cruel.

18: tell us about something dumb/funny you did that has since gone down in history between you and your friends and is always brought up. After a friend of mine told me he had unprotected sex with his ex girlfriend on a booty call, I arranged for a bouquet of fruit to be delivered to his work on father’s day with a sonogram attached to it. He’s a darker skinned guy but his face went white as snow. It doesn’t sound like much, but his mom heard about the prank at her work several blocks away.

19: do you keep a journal? what do you write/draw/ in it? I don’t. This blog is the closest thing I have to that.

20: what’s your favorite eye color? Blue.

22: are you a morning person? I would say so. I’m not so much of a night owl anymore.

26: what are the shoes you’ve had for forever and wear with every single outfit? I don’t have an exciting answer for this, but I have a pair of Puma shoes that have been around for 4-5 years.

29: what’s something really cute that one of your friends does and is totally endearing? One of my friends makes it a point to build her other female friends up at any and all costs.

30: think of it: have you ever been truly scared? The only thing I can think of is when I was probably 5 years old I was at a water park and I was supposed to go down the water slide but I was so scared that I couldn’t do it. My family went down before me so I was stuck at the top screaming and crying.

31: what is your opinion of socks? do you like wearing weird socks? do you sleep with socks? do you confine yourself to white sock hell? I mostly wear white socks because I wear pretty heavy duty shoes at work and so anything else gets ruined. But if I’m going out or doing something, I usually like a bit of colour.

32: tell us a story of something that happened to you after 3AM when you were with friends? I'm told that one time at about 4:00 in the morning I went to my neighbours house and was knocking on their garage door for about half an hour singing songs, but I don’t remember that.

33: what’s your fave pastry? Creme puffs.

34: tell us about the stuffed animal you kept as a kid. what is it called? what does it look like? do you still keep it? I had a Popple. (Remember Popples?! The Popples still make me smile.) Well, I had several, but my favourite was PC - specifically Sports PC. I don’t still have him anymore and I’m pretty sad about that. But his tail did fall off at one point and oddly enough, I still have his tail!

35: do you like stationary and pretty pens and so on? do you use them often? I usually end up buying stationery items that I never use.

36: which band’s sound would fit your mood right now? My mood has been 100% Carly Rae Jepsen since Dedicated came out last Friday.

37: do you like keeping your room messy or clean? My room is often messy, but that doesn’t mean I like it that way.

38: tell us about your pet peeves!? People who use incorrect phrases like “Once and a while” or when people say “should of” instead of “should’ve”

41: what’s the last book you remember really, really loving? Hunger Games. I haven’t really enjoyed too many books since then. I’ve been trying to read the Harry Potter series but I’m only moderately enjoying them.

43: who was the last person you gazed at the stars with? Frick it’s been so long since I’ve done that. Probably a guy who I hooked up with several years ago. I don’t even remember his name.

48: what was your biggest fear as a kid? is it the same today? Heights. I’m still afraid of them, but now I’d say I’m more scared of things like the ocean and space.

50: what’s an odd thing you collect? I don’t collect much anymore. I used to collect Coca-Cola memorabilia, though.

52: what are your favorite memes of the year so far? Those comics on Instagram with the aliens explaining everyday human activities.

53: have you ever watched the rocky horror picture show? heathers? beetlejuice? pulp fiction? what do you think of them? Beetlejuice is the only one of those that I’ve seen in full. Haven’t seen it in probably 20 years so it’s time I give it another go.

54: who’s the last person you saw with a true look of sadness on their face? My mom after my sister did some stupid things last week and was super cruel to her after.

59: what’s your favorite myth? I still find the whole Bermuda Triangle thing to be interesting.

61: what’s the stupidest gift you’ve ever given? the stupidest one you’ve ever received? Oh god, I’m a terrible gift giver so I couldn’t possibly narrow it down to just one. Stupidest gift I’ve ever received was a Starbucks gift set. I don’t drink coffee.

62: do you drink juice in the morning? which kind? Well, I usually put fruit juice into my smoothies, so I guess yeah. And whatever is available.

63: are you fussy about your books and music? do you keep them meticulously organized or kinda leave them be? I have to keep them alphabetical except for my collections which are sorted by size of the collection.

64: what color is the sky where you are right now? Grey. Like it has been for the past week.

65: is there anyone you haven’t seen in a long time who you’d love to hang out with? Yes. I’ll call him K.

66: what would your ideal flower crown look like? Ideal flower crown is not a concept that is even remotely familiar to me.

67: how do gloomy days where the sky is dark and the world is misty make you feel? depressed.

68: what’s winter like where you live? Fucking long and unbearable.

75: tell us about your pets! My babies are not babies anymore. They’re feline brother and sister and I’ve had them for more than 15 years. He’s black and my bestest little buddy. She cost me an invitation to my sister’s wedding and I have NO REGRETS about it at all.

77: pink or yellow lemonade? pink I guess?

78: are you in the minion hateclub or fanclub? I find them entertaining, but I wouldn’t put myself in either club.

80: what color are your bedroom walls? did you choose that color? if so, why? C2 Coconut. Essentially they’re a soft white. I did not choose that colour. It was the builder’s choice and I just haven’t gotten around to painting it yet. Soon one wall is going to be a metallic denim-like blue.

81: describe one of your friend’s eyes using the most abstract imagery you can think of. Crystal ball reflecting tropical waters.

82: are/were you good in school? ish.

83: what’s some of your favorite album art? Michael Jackson’s Dangerous, Social Code’s Rock N Roll or Spice Girls Spice.

84: are you planning on getting tattoos? which ones? I have a concept in mind that combines Spice Girls, Power Rangers and LGBT pride. It’s just a matter of designing and getting it done.

85: do you read comics? what are your faves? Don’t read comics.

86: do you like concept albums? which ones? The only concept album I can think of is Green Day’s American Idiot. That one wore thin on me quickly.

87: what are some movies you think everyone should watch at least once in their lives? Kingsman: Secret Service, Jurassic Park, Twister, and it’s not a movie but I’m going to say The Haunting of Hill House.

94: who was the last person you know to have a birthday? My friend Ashley’s birthday was on Saturday.

Ten Great Sneakers for Spring

The weather is starting to heat up again in California, reminding me it’s almost time for camp collar shirts and washed denim jeans. Every time spring rolls around, I think about picking up a new pair of sneakers. While I love traditional welted footwear, sometimes sneakers go better with casual clothes than leather shoes of any stripe.

If you’re looking to expand your sneaker wardrobe a bit, here are a few I’ve been eyeing. Some are on the expensive side (such as the Vors), while others are reasonably priced around $100 or so. From mainstream lines to niche labels, here are ten great sneakers for spring.

Spalwart Marathon Trail Low ($159+): In the 1970s, shortly after Japan fell in love with Ivy Style, people in Japan noticed American college students were no longer wearing neckties with tweed jackets to classes. Instead, many were repurposing outdoor brands such as Sierra Designs and Eddie Bauer into their everyday attire. Certainly, the oxford-cloth button-down remained popular, but instead of hook-vent sport coats and striped rep neckwear, students were wearing 60/ 40 parkas, Levi’s jeans, and Champion sweatshirts.

The look has been described as Rugged Ivy, and if you gravitate towards that sort of thing, you’ll love Spalwart’s Marathon Trail Lows. They take after classic running shoes from that era, but give them a funkier style with a treaded outsole. They’re a bit flimsy in terms of construction, but still durable and supremely comfortable -- especially on hot days. You can find them on sale right now at End.

Vor 2B Mid-Tops ($415): Vor’s sneakers are painfully expensive, although not out-of-line with top-tier brands such as Common Projects. That said, I love these mid-top basketball shoes. They’re a bit better made than your average pair of Air Force 1s, while still having that casual style that looks good with nearly anything short of tailored clothing. You can wear these with jeans and fatigues, topcoats and field jackets. They’d also look great with washed denim and a sweatshirt. The company also has basketball-styled low-tops.

Nike Air Max 97 Silver Bullets (~$200): Before everyone was all about chunky sneakers, Nike’s Air Max 97 sat on shelves forever because its inflated silhouette. Now it seems downright conservative next to Balenciaga’s Triple S. The design of the AM97 was inspired by Japanese bullet trains and the ribbed lines give the shoes an almost futuristic look. I think they look great under olive fatigues or shorts. You can find them floating around StockX for about $200 (StockX is an online trading site for hard-to-find shoes. They connect buyers and sellers directly, but also authenticate sneakers before shipping to make sure you’re not getting fakes).

Doek Oxford ($170): Last year’s coming-of-age drama, Call Me By Your Name, is full of the kind of summer-style that has made brands such as Ralph Lauren famous. Loosely cut oxford shirts, simple chinos, and pique cotton polos. The shorts are ... pretty short ... and shirts are often unbuttoned low. The looks are simple, slightly preppy, and easy to adopt. If you take after that kind of thing, check out Doak’s balmoral-style tennis shoes, which are made from a hefty cotton canvas and vulcanized outsole. They’re on the expensive side of things (Vans and Superga are affordable alternatives), but they look a bit better than your average pair of kicks. Just spray them with Scotchgard before wearing so they’re protected from stains.

Novesta Marathon ($195): There’s never been a wider range of sneakers inspired by classic ‘70s and ‘80s running shoes. Even luxury brands such as Tom Ford, Loro Piana, and Tod’s are getting on the look (and none of them are as good as the non-lux versions). Novesta is the in-house label for a Slovakian factory that’s historically done private label manufacturing for other companies. And like many factories, they’ve developed their own brand in order to sell directly to customers. In the last few years, they’ve done two collaborations with Comme des Garcons and gotten picked up by some leading menswear boutiques. I like their Marathon runners, which are a bit more conservatively styled than the Spalwarts mentioned above. For an affordable alternative, check Greats.

Vans Anaheim Slip-Ons ($75): Truth be told, I almost always just end up wearing my Engineered Garments x Vans slip-ons every spring -- mostly out of sheer laziness since they’re so easy to put on. Their mismatched uppers make them look a bit more interesting than Vans’ regular slip-ons (although those are great too). The only downside is that they’re hard to find and only available through Nepenthes when available. For something similar, check out these sueded Anaheim or hairy suede slip-ons. The fact that the uppers aren’t mismatched like the EG version means you won’t spend half your summer explaining that, no, you didn’t accidentally walk out the house this way. And yes, this is the fashion now. Ughhh, mom.

Standard & Strange x TSPR Hi-Tops ($175): Chuck Taylors are some of my all-time favorite sneakers, but they’re ... everywhere. For something slightly more unique, but still classically styled, I like these canvas high-tops from Standard & Strange. They’re made in Japan from densely woven canvas uppers and vulcanized rubber soles. And I think they’d look great with workwear. A good substitute for work boots in the summer when it’s too hot to wear heavy footwear, but also rugged enough to go with raw denim jeans. They kind of remind me of a Nigel Cabourn collaboration with Converse a few years back, which I sadly missed out on.

Adidas Army Shoes ($105): If German Army Trainers (or GATs for short) seem new but familiar, that’s because the two brothers who invented them would later go on to launch Adidas and Puma -- two classic sneaker companies that often make shoes bearing a familial resemblance to GATs. German soldiers also used to wear these to the gym in the 1970s, which is how the style got its name. We’ve long endorsed the originals, but they’re hard to find and require you to go through a proxy service (try searching Grailed). Last year, however, Adidas came out with their version. A lot easier to buy.

Nike Air Max 180 ($130): Pete mentioned these a few weeks ago, and I’m just co-signing. They look absolutely great. These Tide Pod looking joints were originally released in the early ‘90s, and with the decade’s revival in full swing, they feel fresh again (see what I did there?). I like how the playful colorway goes with washed denim and sweatshirts, or with darker jeans and topcoats come fall. Delicious looking.

Drake’s Gym Classics ($215): I love Drake’s for their ability to always put a new spin on classic style, but in a way that feels tasteful. These classic gym shoes were made in Japan and feature a hefty rubber toe cap. A bit like Jack Purcells, but better looking. Like some of the other options on this list, these sneakers have a vulcanized rubber sole. That means the soles are glued to the uppers with a wrapped piece of rubber tape, then baked in a kiln like pottery. This seals the sole, tape, and uppers together. Not necessarily exclusive technology to this Japanese factory, but cool.
