Haru: Want to see some pictures of me and Eden skating? I’m pretty bad, honestly, but I managed not to fall over while Eden took these.
Charlie: So, it’s mostly pictures of you skating?
Haru: I took a bunch of pictures of Eden too, but you probably don’t want to see those. We took some adorable selfies together, though.
Charlie: I’m not sure I ever imagined myself saying this, but you guys make a cute couple.
Haru: A couple. I wish I could tell you how awesome it feels to hear somebody say that. About me and someone.
Charlie: You’ve really never had a boyfriend or girlfriend before, have you?
Haru: No, but it’s not because I didn’t want to or wasn’t trying. It’s just.. I’m too annoying, or not interesting enough or something. I don’t know.
Charlie: There’s something I don’t understand.
Haru: What?
Charlie: How does somebody who thinks he’s stupid and annoying and uninteresting manage to become a J-pop idol?
Haru: You don’t need to be a genius for this. I’m pretty and talented enough to have gotten noticed, and that means something. I mean, you know we’re selling a product, and not personalities, right?
Charlie: I guess.
Haru: I got scouted at my high school’s spring festival, rapping in the talent show. The guy from Peak liked my rhymes and my look. So that’s how somebody like me ends up in an industry like this.
Charlie: That’s actually pretty amazing, you know. And you think you’re uninteresting?
Haru: That’s about It for the fun Haru facts, so yeah.
Charlie: Do you like what you’re doing? Like, are you glad you got scouted, or would you rather be doing something else?
Haru: I love it, if you really want to know. It’s the one thing I’m good at, and it’s all I want to do for now. I think I’d like to be a producer some day, when I’m done performing.
Charlie: See? That’s interesting.
Haru: *sighing* I probably shouldn’t be talking to you about this stuff.
Charlie: Why not?
Haru: Because you’re not here to be my personal therapist or whatever. Taiji says I gotta respect boundaries, and I'm working on that.
Charlie: You're not disrespecting any boundaries by talking to me. I was the one who asked.
Haru: Yeah, but everyone says I talk too much.
Charlie: We don't have to talk any more if you don't want to. I probably should be getting to Keigo and Senjirō anyway. Or Aidan, I guess. Is that really his name? It's what he asked me to call him.
Haru: Yeah, it is. Senjirō is his middle name. It's so Western, having a middle name. We don't call him Aidan, and he's never asked us to, but maybe he wants you to because you're Canadian like him. Maybe he thinks you get it.
Charlie: I do, and I get having a multicultural name, too. Eden and I both have Korean middle names, and so does our sister.
Haru: That's cool. My other friend Ji-Hyun is Korean, and he wants an English name. I kind of do too, but I can't think of a good one, and it'd probably be weird anyway, since my English sucks. Taiji says it's ridiculous, but we like the idea.
Charlie: You could ask Eden to help you pick one.
Haru: I could. That's a good idea. Thanks.
Charlie: No problem. I'm here to help.
Haru: I appreciate it.
Charlie: Well, I'd better get to the other guys. More hair colouring in the bathroom.
Haru: *laughing* Get used to us and our crazy demands. We're all super high maintenance.
Charlie: Oh, don't worry. I'm already used to it. Remember who my brother is. 'High maintenance' is a way of life.
Haru: I'm going to send him the pictures you took of me with my new look. I can't wait to see his reaction.
Charlie: He made me promise to make sure you stayed pretty.
Haru: He did? I'm going to ask him if he thinks you kept your promise. I think I can guess what he'll say, but I'll let you know.

hello bpp!
i just wanted to ask about pann. i think you mentioned it in one of your old posts which is how i found out about it. i know about pannchoa and check it out from time but i just wanted to ask if you have some tips on how i can navigate the original pann site as a non korean. pannchoa is okay but i noticed that it seems a lot of bts articles that are translated are mosy often the maknae line only and a lot of the time it’s just about V lol.
or should i even bother going through the effort? loool.
**
Hi Anon,
Honestly, I want to ask you not to bother.
Me trying to tell you how much of a bad idea this is:
My tip on how to navigate it as a non-Korean is to avoid it altogether. Nate Pann (like DC), is a cesspool of filth, and it's not a site I personally frequent often. It's one of the few forums that allows you to create an account without a Korean phone number or ID so you've got the bottom feeders of Korean society running amok, and the worst characters from the international side camping there. There's already some overlap in behaviors seen in Q-anon conspiracists with k-pop fans (just being honest y'all), but imagine a site filled with homophobic incels + conspiracy theorists + underemployed and self-righteous agitators, laser focusing all their God-given talents on k-pop idols and their fans.
Like Reddit + 4chan but for k-pop. Occasionally you see posts from one Ajumma ranting about some local news but the k-pop communities on that site are.. nothing to write home about.
And this is before we get to all the misinformation. The site pages are supposedly regulated by a team supervised by a guy called Nate, but in reality, there's zero accountability and what you have is people just shit-posting 24/7. So you're more likely to become less informed by keeping up with articles on Pann, than you would've been otherwise. It's become almost as bad as DC in that way. There are certain cues in how a story/rumor is written that can hint to how legitimate a story is, but it's difficult to explain to someone not familiar with the language or the site.
The one tip I have for Pann:
If you'd still like to check out the site, I'd say it's a good idea to stick to the trending topics or search for: 톡커들의 선택. Topics that make it to that list tend to have the most engagement which often means the most opportunities for the news there to be vetted, though of course that doesn't always happen. Last I checked there was no good option for translations on the site, so one would have to manually copy-paste to whatever translator engine they normally use.
Alternatives to Pann:
The ARMY fandom is actually very good at filtering legitimate information and passing that along to everyone else, and on calling out misinfo (I'm excluding shipping/akgae spaces here, obviously). You can follow a list of Korean and Japanese translators linked here who consistently provide good updates. If you'd like to stay up to date on what's happening on the k-side, some alternatives or complements to Nate Pann are Naver, and the local e-newspapers i.e. Chosun Ilbo, Yonhap, and Joongang Ilbo.
Also, just being more aware of other k-pop artists/industry folks is a good idea, especially for people we know have a long history with BTS, such as Tablo, Tiger JK, The Lab etc. Sometimes their instagram/social media posts give some hints as to what's coming in terms of music projects and other gossip. These are better alternatives to Pann IMO, if the point is to become more informed about k-pop news in general.
*
A quick word on how I personally navigate Korean forums because I think that could be the follow-up question here. Most of what I learn about is from actually talking to people, not by scouring various forums looking for this or that. I'm friends with local Koreans who are into k-pop and are fans of other idol groups or khh artists, and I also have family who are very plugged in with local news and gossip too. Again, these are people I actually know and have met several times over the years in real life. We regularly chat about whatever and sometimes they'd link to or reference a community forum or we choose to meet on this or that site, and just by way of being on those sites, because BTS is BTS and everyone and their momma is constantly in their business, I see shit from time to time that needs to be reported.
BTS is a bit of an anomaly for many reasons, and one reason is that most things anyone needs to know about BTS, are things the boys directly tell their fans. The middlemen a.k.a. the Media, have a history of getting it wrong when it comes to BTS. The boys realized this early on and have since cut out the middlemen when there's anything actually important to communicate about themselves. We've seen this happen with their 2018 MAMA speech, and more recently, the 2022 Festa Dinner.
Good luck. :)

Prologue
"Unbelievable"
Bang Shi-Hyuk thought as he gazed at the tall college boy. A handsome one, with his beautiful plump lips, symmetrical features, equal parts manly and adorable, and a well sculpted body that definitely spoke of discipline. He looked scared, worried but determined. Sleepless nights had left his eyes puffy but that did little to diminish his appearance.
"Ummm.. Shi-Hyuk-ssi, my mother told me you'd help us. Or me rather..."his voice trailed away.
" Why don't you begin by telling me about yourself, Kim Seokjin, isn't it?"
" Yes. I'm in my first year of college. Studying acting and the dramatic arts. You know my mother. My father runs Shin-Il electronics LLC. " he paused.
"I suppose you know what happened with us?"
"I got an idea from your mother. Honestly, Seokjin-ah" he paused and asked " Is it fine if I call you that?"
"Of course sir!"
" I did not expect that your mother would contact me out of the blue, or that there would be such serious trouble. Not did this radical proposition even occur to me. I mean, she's originally a show stopping model, I'm a music producer, and apart from knowing her from back then, I didn't envision I would end up working with you like this"
Seokjin seemed to be thinking deeply. A troubled look crossed his face, before the looked up, and said "Sir, I am aware that whatever my mother asked you to do is so radical I could hardly even think of it. Not to mention the extent to which it could put you yourself and your company  in complete jeopardy. "
He took a deep breath "But it is my best bet right now".
Bang Shi-Hyuk considered the teenager carefully. Crossing his arms, he said, " I owe a debt to your mother. But considering what you're asking of me, at the very least, you need to tell me the whole story. I need to understand what I am risking"
Seokjin's eyes widened. "S-Sir... I can't tell you. You'll end up in equal danger and they'll come after you. Maybe this was a bad idea... I should leave"
He was about to get up when Bang Shi-hyuk pulled him back into his chair.
"Sit. Did I say you could leave?" He growled.
Seokjin looked at him, terrified. "Boy, I know this much. Your family is in serious trouble. And to the point where your mother practically begged me to help."
He breathed deeply before continuing, "Your mother had to stoop to asking me for help. She never had to be in that situation in her entire life. Are you throwing that in the bin?"
"No, I-"
"Then tell me. Everything. I can't do a thing unless I know exactly what the hell you're running from".
-----------------
Author's Note: Here you go, Ladies and Gentlemen. Seokjin's well-veiled chaebol background prompted me to get creative with this oft-underestimated senior most guy in BTS. Stay tuned for Act 1.

[ask] would you want to be an idol?
80% yes. Unlike many I am going to give an extremely unpopular opinion: I love the fact that kpop is a strict system that promotes and puts a certain behavioral standard on idols like tbh if I was an idol it would be perfect for me in the sense that I am very private person, shy at heart ( I'm not as shy and socially awkward as I used to be but I am very INFP / INFJ last I checked, I may have to take the test again) and not desperate for attention to that degree so there would not be any pressure on me to expose myself like how american pop stars have to keep up antics and overshare to be "Relatable to their fans" kpop isnt about that. In a way it is...but isn't? Honestly
you guys will shit on me for this maybe but why doesn't the industry in Korea have a global idol contest? like dude it would be either disaster or lit (I pray lit LOL) to do an experimental project where it's like produce 101 and all that BUT from a handful of states in America and sectors in Canada, they allow regular people to audition like non asians completely who are least under 32 to be an idol. It'll be like a long intense but fun competition process and they are auditioning and competing to be like where Alex from Rania was in a way, but the role will be more serious and the american would be an equal part of the girl / boy group. They'll be paired with teachers to learn korean if they wish and go through challenges. Then the crowd votes along with passing judges tests / votes and then towards the finals they all travel back to Korea or wherever to do a show or do a song they all came up with on Inkigayo or Show champion and it's a special episode then whoever wins that wins the whole thing?
and become a temporary group for like 6 months or a year and if they do well they stay a group, the american can leave and go back home or sign with them individually etc. YOU GET WHERE I'M GOING WITH THIS? LMAO IF THEY DID SOMETHING LIKE THIS DESPITE BEING 27 NOW I'D AUDITION IDGAF I could pass for a mixed asian if need be and have no issues with pale skin since the burn left some discoloring I need to whiten out anyways. But if that was ever a thing like "now is your chance to become a kpop idol" I would do it.
but as I was saying you are either yourself 100% just 10x or half of who you truly are or an image with bits and pieces of your real self or just 100% fake with an image / character. Although it tire me out possibly (if I got stuck with a character / image that I didn't ask for / can't naturally do) I would feel secure and happy about knowing I am playing a role, I am doing an image and who I truly am as a person and my private information is factored in to whether I get fed or not with my check. Like for instance, as an idol let's be 100 - you are there to entertain, make the fans happy, make them find something special in you and stan you and develop a good working relationship with your group / person if you're in a duo (only yourself and another person*) as well as put the best of yourself out there. Sure it has ups and downs, it will never be easy like we learned over the past 6 years with all the tea spilled & scandals, but that is purely it. You don't have much more expected of you other than that. (I am not accounting the general things like weight, beauty, etc. thats another topic). Like you aren't expected to embody the music you put out and what you right on a realistic level if that makes sense?
I would be able to show up, work, do what I gotta do, and stress or not, go home and not worry about having to devluge much about myself or my fans being fickle if I slipped up like American fans these days. Also virgin or not, whatever my sexual status and dating status is It's not imperative nor a part of my job. There is no pressure on me in life to date or be deemed a weirdo or loser cause I'm not seeing someone and if I do date and fall in love then I'd be an idol who would like be genuine with fans and present it in a way to groom the fans to accept it and support us unless it's a fuck buddy then I gotta be careful ROTFL. I've already endured mountains of hell in my life and know what hard work is so the stress level of it wouldn't get to me unless I was expected to have good vocals and looked online seeing fans get on me about that. I'd either be a rapper in the group or like dara from 2ne1, a super pretty girl with barely there vocals that is cute enough to hang LOL.
I'd be a very much a dara, jisoo, suzy, hyuna, T.O.P hyrbid LOL. I would probably be the leader cause I have that grit and leadership (even when I don't want to lead) to do it and at least try to do some self choreographer in there. It would be simple, the complex stuff we'd hire a pro for LOL.
all in all I'd be holding my fandom very accountable and I'd be that rare idol who ALWAYS likes what fans send me, comments, reply back to them as much as I can and give them content when I can.
But I can't dance for shit in real life nor sing so Idk I wouldn't be able to make it into a group unless strings were pulled or they kept me as a token foreginer / pretty girl cause of my height, skin-tone and beauty LOL. I'm very tall in RL. It would just be a struggle for me in the sense that I don't take shit from people so I'd be checking hosts a lot like Heechul and them on radio star or whatever if they tried me. I'd have to keep track of birth control or go back to the states often to get that shot for 3months cause I would geniunely hook up with a lot of idols if they approached me idc LMAO. I want to be that idol who is like suzy and transitions into movies and dramas.

[ New Recruit ]
↳ Pre-Debut era
↳ Xiang isn't going to be in the girl group for the 2017 JYP trainee showcase. Xiang is less than pleased. Chan becomes well aware of that fact.

Being a kpop trainee is not the fanfiction dream most fans think it to be. You don't meet all your favorite artists on the first day (or ever, really). The actual training is grueling. There are constant dance and vocal and rap lessons, along with language and instrument classes.
Not to mention the behavior classes where you're literally told how to act. Also, the foreigners have to learn how to become some kind of fake Korean. You don't get to go home on holidays most of the time.
And there's this overlying fear that at any moment you could not measure up to what your company wants you to be and you'll be sent home without a chance of redemption.
"Are you done being melodramatic or do you want to keep spiraling into a depressive episode?"
"You want an honest answer?"
Yeji rolls her eyes, "Come on, Changie. Groups are being announced for the showcase soon and I want to be there when it's posted."
"Sorry, I need to wallow in self pity for a little longer."
"No, you don't. Now come on!"
Xiang groans as her friend and fellow trainee pulls her up off the ground and out of the dorm.
"She's alive! I figured you'd have killed yourself with how long it was taking," Ryujin comments as Yeji drags Xiang out into the hallway with the rest of the trainees in their dorm.
"Don't tempt me."
The group of girls makes their way to the bus stop, where they ride to their company building and file inside. More trainees are already waiting for the announcing of teams for the trainee showcase.
Just as the last group of trainees arrives, a dance instructor walks down the hall. The trainees who had been buzzing with excitement and talking amongst themselves fall quiet as they step out of her way as she pins the sheet to the announcement board. She walks away like nothing a moment later and the trainees all climb on top of each other trying to read the paper.
Lily Morrow jumps away happily with a few other soloists, the remaining trainees pressing forward to read the assignments. Yeji pushes Xiang forward as a space opens up, leaning over her shoulder.
Yeji pokes Xiang in the back, "You're a rap soloist, who saw that coming?"
Xiang nudges her as much as she can in the tight crowd of eager trainees. She continues reading the list, looking further down at the teams.
Trainee Bang Chan's Project Team
Junior Team: Boy Story
She skips past that.
Girls 2 Team
There it is.
Members: Mashiro, Park Sunmin, Park Yejin, Shin Ryujin, Shin Yuna, Lee Chaeryoung, and Hwang Yeji
Xiang blinks and reads the names again. And again. And a fourth time.
She still doesn't see her Korean name (Ji Changho) anywhere under Girls 2 Team. She guesses it's okay she wasn't chosen as a debut-worthy trainee (not really, that sucks major ass but okay) but then she hears someone say something from behind her, not realizing she can hear them.
"Why is Changho in Chan's team?"
"What?" Xiang mutters, lifting her gaze back up the list to Bang Chan's Project Team.
And there, right between Lee Yongbok and Han Jisung, is Ji Changho, a member of Trainee Bang Chan's Project Team. Until now, Xiang had thought that Chan's team would be a male only group.
Chan is a decent enough guy a few years older than Xiang. He is currently JYP's longest training trainee, a great leader and an even better producer, good at all three of the fundamental idol skills as well as just a nice guy. No one ever has anything bad to say about him.
But why the hell is she listed to be a member of his team for the showcase, especially when he got to choose the trainees he wanted? He didn't even ask her first before signing her up unwillingly.
She looks above the crowd of trainees and finds Chan's dirty blonde head of hair. She detaches herself from Yeji and the crowd of trainees. She makes her way over to Chan.
"Why is she part of the team? I thought it was just us nine guys."
"I know, but I've seen how good she is and she produces, too. Have you heard her tracks?"
"Yes, everyone has, but that doesn't mean she should be a part of the group."
"For once I have to agree with Han on something."
Chan turns away from Jisung to face Xiang, who stands with her arms crossed and hip popped.
"But you... you said you'd join the group. I talked to you about it."
"Uh, no, I didn't and you didn't talk to me about anything."
"I didn't? But..."
Chan's confused expression shifts to absolute terror, covering his mouth with his hand as he looks at Xiang with wide eyes.
"That was a dream."
"Are you messing with me?"
"No, I-," he groans and drags his hands down his face, "God, I'm so sorry, Xianghao."
"Using my real name doesn't fix this, Christopher. You know that it's either your group or the girl group that's going to debut. If this stops me from debuting, I am going to chop your dick off."
Chan swallows nervously, "Understood. I-I'll go talk to JYP now."
Chan runs off.
"You're so confident that we're not going to debut, then?"
Xiang turns to Jisung, "Honestly, fuck off, Han. I am not in the mood for your shit."
