Caroline’s big adventure

Some people in Victor’s life question the wisdom of bringing a child with albinism to a place where it’s perpetually sunny, but Victor is of the view that life is for living and that some risks are worth taking. As protective as he is of Caroline, he doesn’t want to keep her in the proverbial glass box. Caroline is energetic, adventurous and brave, and she needs to be allowed to explore and play. She’s not the sort of kid who can be contained.

Fortunately, Victor knows what precautions to take so Caroline will be as safe as possible in her sunny, sandy playground. They’re using copious amounts of sunscreen, and Caroline has multiple hats and sunglasses. She knows to come inside during the hottest part of the day, and Victor checks her skin every day for the slightest hint of sunburn.

Special precautions notwithstanding, Caroline is determined to experience everything she can while she’s here. She has seashells to collect, sandcastles to build, and endless hours of fun in the sea, swimming, sailing, catching fish and learning to ride her very own AquaZip. She’s not about to let the need for sunscreen slow her down.

Heart-to-Heart

Victor: I caught a wild Caroline, the most beautiful and elusive creature on the beach!

Caroline: *snorting*

Victor: Are you trying not to laugh?

Caroline: Yeah.

Victor: Why? You should laugh at funny things.

Caroline: You're the funniest thing I know, Victor.

Victor: Thanks for the compliment. I'll take it.

Caroline: *giggling* Why can't all grownups as silly as you?

Victor: Oh, you know... some other grownup probably told them a long time ago that it's not okay for grownups to be silly. Luckily, Nanna Grace forgot to mention that to me, so what you see is what you get. World's silliest grownup.

Caroline: Are you ever going to say that to me?

Victor: What do you think? Do you think a grownup as silly as me would ever tell you it's not okay to be silly when you grow up?

Caroline: No.

Victor: That's right. What I am going to tell you is that it's important to learn when you can be silly and when you have to take things seriously. You know how Yuri and I are teaching you about responsibility?

Caroline: Yeah, like how I have to feed Pirate Cookie every day and work on her obedience, and make my bed and brush my teeth every day?

Victor: Exactly. When you're training Pirate Cookie, is that a time to be silly?

Caroline: No, because she might get confused. She might think it's play time instead of learning time.

Victor: Right. But after training, then the two of you can be silly, can't you?

Caroline: Yeah.

Victor: That's what It's like for me, too. I have to take it seriously when I'm looking after my patients or driving or making dentist and eye doctor appointments for you, but there's still plenty of room for silly time.

Caroline: I like silly time.

Victor: Me too. Now, what do you say to washing some of the sand off and then getting something to eat?

Caroline: Can you carry me up to the house on your back?

Victor: Sure, if you want.

Caroline: Yes, please.

Victor: After we wash off, you can check on Yuri. If he's still working you can tell him that I said to stop. I'm going to look in on the patients really quickly and make sure they're okay before Miss Poet leaves and Miss Leilani gets here to stay the night with them. Then we'll grill some burgers, okay?

Caroline: Okay!

Victor: How's this?

Caroline: This is one of my favourite things.

Victor: I'm glad, 'cause it's one of my favourite things too.

Caroline: You know what's my favouritest favourite thing of all?

Victor: What is it?

Caroline: That you adopted me and I get to be your kid forever and ever. That I got to pick my own name, and you let me keep 'Caroline' even though it was the name of somebody you already loved a lot.

Victor: I love you a lot, and one of my favouritest favourite things is that you thought 'Caroline' was a good enough name to want to keep. I think your Auntie Caroline would've been proud to share it with you.

Caroline: Really?

Victor: Yeah. She didn't get a chance to grow up, but I think if she did, she would've loved to see how well you're growing up too, and I think she'd be very pleased.

Caroline: I wish I could've met her.

Victor: I wish I could've met your biological dad.

Caroline: Maybe... maybe wherever they are, they're together. Maybe he's looking after her just like you're looking after me. Sometimes it's sad to think about Papa because he went away forever, but... but I kinda feel better when I imagine that's what he's doing.

Victor: You know what? I like that. It makes me feel better too.

Caroline: I think they're up in the stars. That's why I'm not scared of the dark, 'cause when it's dark, the stars come out and I can look for Papa's.

Victor: Which one is his?

Caroline: I don't know what it's called, but it's the brightest one I can see. He had to make it really bright for me so I can find him, because he knows I can't see like everyone else.

Victor: I think he must love you very much, to have thought of that.

Caroline: I love him very much. Sometimes I tell that to the star. Do you think that's okay?

Victor: I think it's more than okay. I think it's the most wonderful thing I've heard in a long time, and I hope you'll never stop wanting to tell his star how you feel, so he never forgets how much you love him.

Caroline: I love you and Yuri too.

Victor: You're allowed to love as many people as you want. That's the great thing about hearts, you know. They grow to whatever size they need to grow, so you can fit in as much love as you want, and they don't shrink back when somebody you love goes away. You can keep that space for them in your heart forever.

Caroline: I like that. Do you keep space in your heart for the other Caroline?

Victor: Yes, and for Dad and Grandma Lydia.

Caroline: I'm gonna keep a space for Papa.

Victor: I know you will. He's a very special person, and he deserves to be remembered, and there's absolutely no one better than you to remember him and keep a space for him in your heart.

kids in paradise

If anyone needed more proof that Victor is just a big kid, here it is. The sun is going down, but is he telling his child to go inside, wash the sand off and get something to eat? No, he's still playing outside right along with her. Clearly, they're both in their element.

Caroline can hardly believe this is real. She never could've imagined a place where it's summer all the time and where she and her family literally live on the beach and she can play in the sand and swim every day. Victor feels much the same way. He's serious about his responsibilities here, but in his off-time, he's all about playtime and fun, exciting adventures. He's thrilled to be living on the beach and to have what is essentially a huge natural playground just outside his front door.

The other day I reblogged a writing prompt list to my side blog that was “Silly Drunk Dialogue” (or something like that), and for some reason I couldn’t stop associating it with Nikolai and Mishka. Now I want to do a scene or two with them because I think it’d be funny.

Mishka has an absolutely astonishing alcohol tolerance, and Nikolai… doesn’t. He’s usually done after about two or three drinks (but of course he isn’t this particular time). Imagine Mishka trying to get him home, and Nikolai having to let Mishka literally take care of him for once. Maybe Mishka needs help and has to get it from someone he doesn’t really want to ask, and chaos ensues. Also, I feel like Nikolai would be the “Get your hands off me! I have a boyfriend!” type, and poor Mishka would be so flustered trying to convince him that it’s okay, that he is Nikolai’s partner.

Then there’s the question of whether Nikolai remembers any of it in the morning, and if he does, how much of it?

Yuri: Perhaps, but I have to document this moment. I may never look this adorable again, and images of my cuteness need to be preserved.

It's like I released an overgrown kid into the world's largest playground...

Victor has a new toy! Never mind the fact that it's supposed to be used for transportation to and from other parts of the islands for his job. He's going to enjoy it in his own way during his off time, obviously.

Just look at his face:

He loves this thing. He even learned to do tricks with it, and it gave him an energized moodlet.

Now he wants to upgrade it, because I mean… OF COURSE he needs lights and streamers on it, and a music player.

Better Build & Buy isn't "better" in my opinion. It's annoying and glitchy, and deletes objects that were previously placed with MOO.

I built the clinic while using it, and now I'm taking it out of my mods folder and I will literally never use it again.

Sulani Clinic - Photo Tour

The clinic still needs a name, but it's fully completed and ready. Here are some outside views to start with:

There’s a little garden with a pond over in the corner that can be enjoyed by patients and visitors as well as the family.

Here’s the side yard. This is mainly for the family’s personal use.

The clinic’s waiting room and reception area is comfortable and inviting. A bit too inviting perhaps, as locals will sometimes drop in for a chat or just to satisfy their curiosity about the latest nurse exchange participant and their family.

The stairs lead up to the living quarters.

Here’s the examination and treatment room. The clinic has two nurses and one doctor, and they all make use of this space in turns.

The door in back leads out to a sheltered area where in-patients who are well enough can enjoy some sunshine and ocean air. They can come out on their own on foot or in a wheelchair, but there’s actually enough room to move a bed outside too.

When Victor took this job, the local doctor told him he’d be helping to deliver a lot of babies. He realized she meant it when he found out the clinic has a room dedicated to pre-natal care and birth.

Here’s the clinic’s bathroom. Staff and patients have access to this.

Last but not least is the in-patient room. Patients who are too ill to be cared for at home but whose conditions aren’t critical enough to require the “big hospital” (as the locals call it) can be admitted for care here.

Upstairs is where the nurses and their families who come through the nurse exchange program live. Victor and his family are going to be staying here for a while, and Victor is already in love with it.

The feature Yuri is most in love with is this big sliding glass door and the cute little private deck with a gorgeous view.

The deck is the perfect spot to enjoy a meal or to cuddle and watch the sunset

We have a clinic!

Victor: Here we are, family! Home sweet home for the next year.

Victor: Look, Caroline. We’ve got water all around. You can swim every day if you want to.

Caroline: Yes! I totally want to.

Victor: I think you’re going to love it here. You’ll make lots of new friends at the village school, and you can ride your bike anywhere without having to worry about cars, and when Yuri and I aren’t working we can all go on lots of adventures.

Yuri: We should go to that place where people can swim with dolphins.

Caroline: We can really swim with dolphins?

Yuri: We can, and we can pick our own fruit, and go sailing.

Victor: I’ll teach you how to sail the outrigger. Then you can come and help me when I do house calls.

Caroline: Cool!

The clinic has a room for overnight patients. Victor knew when he accepted this nurse exchange assignment that he’d sometimes be responsible for sick patients around the clock, but he doesn’t mind. It’s all part of the job, and he gets a lot of fulfillment from his work.

Victor can’t imagine a more beautiful and peaceful place for people to recover.

My little Sulani clinic is turning out cute! The waiting room and the entire upstairs living area is done now. I just have to finish the clinic portion and do a bit of landscaping, and then I can play with it.

Imagine Victor putting a crap ton of sunscreen on little Caroline and then the two of them running off for beach adventures, while Yuri just shakes his head and wonders how much sand is going to end up in his bed tonight.

So, there’s a huge chunk of Victor & Yuri’s timeline that I haven’t really talked about (although I’ve alluded to it). It’s basically the 10 year stretch between when they adopt Caroline and when Caroline & Co. takes place. Yuri has already started BRAVE Communications, but in that time period he grows his business and he and James become business partners. Also during that time, Victor participates in three nurse exchanges; two in Sulani and one in Chestnut Ridge. They discuss fostering another child, but ultimately decide they’re not prepared for that. Yuri falls in love with an abandoned horse, who falls in love with Victor. They adopt him. In Chestnut Ridge, Yuri finds another rescue horse to love, and this time the horse reciprocates. They end up adopting her too. They learn to ride. They do quite a lot of travelling and show Caroline the world. They grow and mature enormously.
