But did she get there?
Over the past few posts, I've been lamenting my inability to reach the Embrace Metal Devil. I'd made several tries from different directions, sometimes getting very close, only to be baffled by unclimbable rocks and invisible walls. However, @h0riz0nstuff was kind enough to post some meticulous footage showing exactly how Aloy can get there. So I thought I'd give it a try.
Did I get there? Was I finally able to play among the swooping rollercoaster arms of the Metal Devil? Or did the game glitch out and manage to baffle me yet again?
*angels singing* *angels shouting at the tops of their heavenly lungs*
The path is pretty easy with a big jump and a couple of long drops. It's also nicely free of any machine interference. But I'm not surprised I failed to find it, as there's nothing especially obvious about it. In fact, during my first attempt, I ended up in one of the correct areas. But instead of heading in the right direction, I thought I'd dead-ended. So Aloy went off onto a roof to mope.
On my previous attempts, I'd been endlessly jumping, fighting to get as high as possible. On this path, most of what you do is run and run and run until you look ahead and suddenly you're there at the Proving battle ground. And, more importantly, the Devil.
Aloy was so overwhelmed she went wobbly. Maybe it was the altitude.
From there, you can explore an area you don't get to appreciate much during story. And you get to walk on the Devil’s partially exposed chassis. At least, maybe it’s a chassis? I’m not Ted Faro, I don’t know.
Here, Aloy was so ecstatic she half-levitated.
You have to be careful in places. There are some very high cliffs, and if you start climbing again, you'll run into the do-not-pass-instakill barriers. There was one such barrier right in back of me for this picture.
It's a dramatic and beautiful area, with the Devil’s massive arms arcing all around you.
I have a feeling that if the sequel ever happens, Aloy's going to have to fight one of these things. So it's good that she's familiarizing herself early.
But what I really wanted to know was whether I could climb on the arms. A lot of them are either out of reach or too steep. But what do I see there on the left?
Excuse me, Aloy needs to do something a genius like her really shouldn’t do.
Aloy, not caring that the fate of the world rested in her hands and that if she died, all humanity died too, trooped out onto the more gently sloping arm. There’s a very long drop below. It's pretty wide, fortunately, and Aloy isn't affected by the strong blizzard wind somehow.
No way to go but forward.
I was worried I would have to keep repositioning her because of the arm's curvature, but it wasn't hard. There are some gaps where you have to jump toward the end.
She's hard to see, but Aloy's right in the spiky nest part. Wouldn't you love to see her control one of these in the sequel?
Eventually, you reach an instakill warning and have to make your careful way back along the arm. But it's definitely worth it. It's gorgeous up there. I kept pulling the camera back as far as possible.
I'm thrilled to have finally gotten up to the Metal Devil that's taunted me ever since I first saw it. Thanks again, @h0riz0nstuff!
