We talk alot about public health in relation to inactivity and obesity but by far one of the best remedies is just making a place walkable and having decent public transport. The same can be said about making a place cyclable and having cycling as a form of transport.

We kinda have this issue where rather than providing an environment where people exercise as part of their day, we concentrate on things like "leisure centres" or "getting people into playing more sports" which although is great and all, is not something the majority of people are going to do, especially not regularly. Yes, Lesuire Centres and Sports Facilities are important, but they should not be the only thing we use for fitness for the majority of people, especially if they cannot afford to go swimming or to play rugby. The vast majority of people aren't going to go on daily jogs.

We need is environments that allow people and encourage people to walk and cycle as part of getting tasks done rather than a separate exercise activity. This is how you encourage healthy lifestyles, not posters telling people to eat more veg and go for a run. Create environments where people feel they can walk and cycle and that will do more for health outcomes than any poster telling someone to "go to the gym".
