Okay so. I recently got cast in a production of Les Mis (exciting) as Feuilly. So I need all the information I can get it. This is basically me asking for people to infodump about Feuilly, or any of the other Amis for that matter. All headcanons and ships, literally anything is accepted.

An In-Depth Guide to Les Mis Adaptations (Part 3)
[part 1], [part 2]
1. 2012 movie musical
Tumblr media
You read that right. Even considering the concert recordings, the 2012 film is the best English language screen adaptation of Les Misérables in terms of the novel’s characters, themes and spirit.
The best thing about musicals is it is a feature of the medium for characters to articulate their innermost feelings. Every central character, Valjean most of all, is allowed to reveal their complexity and humanity. Éponine and Cosette who were ‘children together’ are lonely in different ways as adults, in the middle of a crowded street and isolated in an empty house– ‘On My Own’ and ‘In My Life’ are much more than simple romantic declarations. It also removes the need for the inclusion of minor characters like Tholomyès, who only served a minor role in Fantine’s story. The downtrodden are also represented in an unprecedented way through the ensemble numbers. ‘At The End of the Day’ illustrates that the plight of the poor is not unique to Fantine, but a suffering that is systemic and inescapable. There are minor inaccuracies that the movie and stage musical share, a sleazy foreman fires Fantine in the musical. In the novel (and 1998 film), Madame Victurnien is the supervisor that fires Fantine without Madeleine’s knowledge, showing that both men and women can uphold oppressive systems by taking advantage of the little power they have. Nonetheless, the advantages of a musical adaptation far outweigh such changes.
Sticking to one’s knee-jerk reaction as fans of the musical does the film a disservice. I agree that the vocal performances are nowhere near as strong, on top of cinematography that is not to everyone’s tastes. It is not a 1 for 1 transposition from stage to screen– there are changes, cuts and additions, but the result is a more faithful and equally moving adaptation of Hugo’s novel. To those familiar with the musical, the most obvious change is the positioning of ‘I Dreamed a Dream’. An overlooked aspect of this change is what took its place– the cart crash where Madeleine saves Fauchelevant and sparks recognition in Javert. Fantine is given time to exhaust her resources before ‘Lovely Ladies’ and ‘I Dreamed a Dream’, during which Javert opens an investigation into Madeleine. This allows Javert to confess his wrongdoing and ask to be discharged, his submission to authority a part of his character missed by the stage musical. Book Javert reveres the law in the place of religion; his musical counterpart treats the law and the Lord as interchangeable yet unchangeable objects of veneration. His worldview is confronted by Valjean’s, whose religion defines his morality, but is entirely separate from legality.
Speaking of Valjean, no other adaptation has gotten him even close to this right. In the stage musical the time jump from 1823 to 1832 happens immediately after Valjean fetches Cosette from the Thénardiers. I have gone on record saying that ‘Suddenly’ was a mediocre add-on, but after seeing so many adaptations butcher Valjean’s character I have no choice but to eat my words. In ‘Suddenly’ we hear Valjean find hope, life and love in becoming a parent. He sang of himself as prisoner and mayor in ‘Prologue’ and ‘Who Am I?’, it is only right that Valjean contemplates his new fatherhood through song. This is the role he commits to until the end of his life after all. From that point on he puts Cosette above his wants and needs– he barely hesitates to find Marius though he knew he would take away his one happiness. Once Valjean had ensured she would be taken care of, he willingly withdrew from her life because his past could have the potential to ruin it. When Cosette describes him as ‘loving and gentle and good’, you are inclined to believe her.
The movie musical does not place pressure on Marius to be simultaneously revolutionary and romantic. Gillenormand’s presence, although brief, tells that he is a student who is at odds with his rich family. His stubbornness towards his family grants him more complexity than just a flaky, lovesick fool or ‘leader’ of Les Amis. Enjolras takes up the mantle, especially as ‘Do You Hear The People Sing’ is shifted to open the film’s second act. Les Amis being an experienced activist group is alluded to in the removal of the line ‘they were schoolboys/ never held a gun’. Their idealism and camaraderie are clear even in the little screen time they had. The concert and stage versions of Les Mis are unmatched musically, but differ wildly from production to production (removing the revolve on the West End was a terrible decision). The movie musical is not only well done, but remains constant.
The 2012 film is devastating, uplifting, and beautiful to look at. Some say musicals are the most manipulative art form, and while I am happy to report that Les Mis is one that weaves in Hugo’s message flawlessly, it does not remove the need for at least some critical thought. The worst thing about the musical is not that it does not do the novel justice, but that with its popularity, a large portion of its audience only gives a passing thought to the message behind their entertainment. Theatre audiences are able to go about their days while its music has been used in protest movements around the world. The myth of continuous upward progression blinds the best of us, but ‘ignorance and poverty’ is as present as ever. The Les Misérables musical ends with the same call to action Hugo’s novel begins with.  Are you interrogating oppressive systems that persist today?
Bonus! 2007 anime
Tumblr media
If you would like to watch a book-accurate adaptation of Les Misérables and musicals are not your jam, never fear! Shoujo Cosette is a 52 episode anime that contains the most detail of them all (including Jehan, if you know you know). Aimed at young women, there is no over-sexualisation, nor does it condescend or shy away from the heavy themes of Les Mis. One notable departure is the addition of a pet dog to Valjean and Cosette’s household, which let’s be honest, only adds to the story.
If you have reached this point in the page, might I suggest you try reading Les Misérables? I heard it is a nice little novel about a man who stole a loaf of bread.

An ode to an era…
This isn’t a photo shoot, more just random shots from the House of Lies era, but I found some amazing print interviews from back then. They’re after the break. Enjoy!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here he talks about being on three big networks at once as Hoyt, Oberholt, and of course Jean Ralphio https://www.assignmentx.com/2012/interview-ben-schwartz-builds-a-house-of-lies/
AX: Hypothetically, what would happen if your PARKS AND REC character Jean-Ralphio met Don Cheadle’s HOUSE OF LIES character Marty Kaan and Kristen Bell’s character? Would John-Ralphio hire the firm?
SCHWARTZ: If Jean-Ralphio met Marty, he would want to do anything to be friends with him, literally anything. He would think that he’s the coolest person in the world, and then he would me Kristen’s character and would want to fall in love with her and bring her back home. I think he’d hire them in a second. But Jean-Ralphio always sees the happiest things in the universe, and he’s always happy no matter what’s happening.
Follow up interview for season two https://www.assignmentx.com/2013/exclusive-interview-ben-schwartz-on-house-of-lies/
AX: Anything else you want to say about HOUSE OF LIES right now?
SCHWARTZ: I want people to watch. I’m so excited for the second season. I think people will be really psyched. And if you missed the first season, get it on DVD. We did commentary for it and it was bonkers. It’s so fun.
NY Post https://nypost.com/2014/01/11/house-of-lies-ben-schwartz-a-jack-of-all-trades/amp/
“From my character’s point of view, he longs for almost a father figure, and Marty is that figure,” says Schwartz, 32. “Clyde f-ed Marty over because he felt emotionally abused. When he’s by himself, he realizes how much he needs those people in his life…They function so beautifully together as a group, almost like a dysfunctional family,” says Schwartz. “When they’re separated, they realize how little [else] they have in their lives.”
Clyde will “do anything” to get to the top https://www.sj-r.com/story/entertainment/television/2013/03/16/house-lies-ben-schwartz-clyde/43771956007/
"We did that scene as one huge take because Josh and I both come from comedy backgrounds and improv and stage stuff, so it was such a cool feeling," Schwartz says. "He and I especially really go nuts with each other. We also did a Les Miz take of that where we sang the entire scene."

I see you mention Les Miz in some of your asks!! Do you like the musical too or just the book? 👀
YES. It was one of the first musicals I developed an affinity for after The Phantom of the Opera (over a decade ago...). I believe most people who decide to pick up the Brick do so due to the musical, and the book has many details and hilarious moments that the musical simply does not have the time for.
I will give you some of my unsolicited opinions complete with links and extraneous details under the cut.
Favourite albums: The 10th Anniversary Concert supplemented by The Complete Symphonic Recording. Some of the songs were shortened or cut in the concert, hence the supplement (such as “Javert's Arrest” with the electric guitar). The symphonic version has full instrumentals and dialogues that typically are not featured. I also think the French album is neat, and I like the different translation nuances.
Favourite concert production: The 10th Anniversary Concert. The cast is phenomenal in general with Colm Wilkinson (the original Jean Valjean), Phillip Quast (one of the best Javerts), Ruthie Henshall as Fantine, and Michael Ball as Marius (I don't like him as Javert in later productions, however), although the Enjolras sounds a tad too American to me. The 25th Anniversary Concert is an honourable mention for its talented cast, including Alfie Boe as Jean Valjean, Norm Lewis as Javert, Katie Hall as Cosette, Ramin Karimloo as Enjolras, and Hadley Fraser as Grantaire (if you are familiar with the 25th Anniversary version of Phantom of the Opera, you may recognise the latter two as Erik and Raoul, respectively). You will hear people complain about Nick Jonas being casted as Marius, but in his defense, he was only 17 years old at the time, and his singing is not that bad.
2012 Musical Movie: My opinion is an unpopular one, but I actually don't dislike the film. The singing isn't as unbearable as everyone says, and it is largely the questionable directing choices that caused issues to be aggravated further. It's nostalgic to me much like the 2002 Phantom of the Opera movie. When I introduce people to the musical, the film is the first thing I show them primarily because the plot is easier to see than from bootlegged stage productions. Also, Russell Crowe's Javert is probably the most pathetic, soggy iteration of Javert (with the 1978 film shortly after), and I think his struggle to sustain notes fits his interpretation of the character. Hugh Jackman's Valjean is a warm-hearted DILF, which I find a lot better than some other non-musical movies/shows that make him unnecessarily violent and aggressive (the 1998 film, and I hear the BBC miniseries). Aaron Tveit as Enjolras is also a fan-favourite, and I enjoy Samantha Barks' Éponine.
My current blog title is actually a reference to "Javert, t'es amoureux" by Jean Vallée. It is not from the musical, but it's wonderfully melodramatic and the fact that the singer played Javert in the original French stage cast is hilarious to me.

I am satisfied with this work😚.I've got this inspiration from "It seems to me that I am going to shoot a flower" in the original by Victor Hugo, the crusade when Enjolras waving the flag in les Miz movie(2012),and the fall of Enjolras.

Lavender Haze
- marius + cosette
I feel a lavender haze creeping up on me
So real, I'm damned if I do give a damn what people say
No deal, the 1950s shit they want from me
I just wanna stay in that lavender haze
Tumblr media
Maroon
- enjolras + grantaire
The burgundy on my T-shirt when you splashed your wine into me
And how the blood rushed into my cheeks, so scarlet, it was
The mark you saw on my collarbone, the rust that grew between telephones
The lips I used to call home, so scarlet, it was maroon
Tumblr media
Anti-Hero
- éponine thénardier
I wake up screaming from dreaming
One day I'll watch as you're leaving
'Cause you got tired of my scheming
(For the last time)
Tumblr media
Snow on the Beach
- grantaire (+ enjolras)
One night a few moons ago
I saw flecks of what could've been lights
But it might just have been you
Passing by unbeknownst to me
Tumblr media
You're on Your Own, Kid
- éponine (+ marius)
I didn't choose this town
I dream of getting out
There's just one who could make me stay

Midnight Rain

He wanted it comfortable
I wanted that pain
He wanted a bride
I was making my own name
Chasing that fame
He stayed the same
All of me changed like midnight

We had one thing going on
I swear that it was something
'Cause I don't remember who I was before you
Painted all my nights
A color I have searched for since
Tumblr media
Vigilante Shit
- les amis
While he was doing lines
And crossing all of mine
Someone told his white collar crimes to the FBI
And I don't dress for villains
Or for innocents
I'm on my vigilante shit again
Tumblr media
Bejeweled
- cosette fauchelevent
Best believe I'm still bejeweled
When I walk in the room
I can still make the whole place shimmer

4. which muse of yours is your all time favorite? if you stopped writing them: why?
Munday Questions - Not Accepting
Ohhhh god that's a hard question. Everytime I think I settle on one another pokes their head out and reminds me of a thread or partner I had with them that I adored.
I'm going to have to split the difference between the Thenardiers and Mrs. Lovett (the Thenardiers shared an account so yes they function as one muse for the purpose of this answer shhhh)
The Thenardiers are just the right level of bastard, and Les Miz has played a huge part in my academic and personal lives. My undergrad thesis was on the villains of Les Miserables. Two of my best in show cosplay awards were Les Miz characters - hell, one was a genderbent M. Thenardier from the 2012 movie I need to remake that bumblebee suit someday.
I stopped writing them for a myriad of reasons. I was losing muse in general, I had taken on the worst job of my life and it took all of my energy just to survive a lot of the time, the les miz community was very quiet, and I'd done a lot with M. and Mme T as it was. I may come back to them one day (Anything's possible, I never thought I'd touch roleplay again after my last hiatus), but I'd probably need a lot more rpc support that was interested in them. I still met some of my best friends through those bastards, so they hold a soft spot in my heart.
Mrs. Lovett is the opposite of the Thenardiers in a lot of ways. She was my first canon character and my second character overall after a very teen phantom of the opera OC. She changed so much over my playing her - in some form or another, I played her continuously for 9 years (?). Helena Bonham Carter was a huge inspiration to me when I was a teen and something about her Mrs. Lovett was the perfect mix of sympathetic and absolute lunacy that appealed to me. I worked out a lot of angst through her, a lot of pessimism about my future. In some ways she was a self-insert, but to those interested and familiar with the Sweeney Todd rpc, I made myself remarkably unpopular by not shipping her with Sweeney. I won't go into an essay here, but I thought it was very clear that all she wanted was a better life by any means necessary - Sweeney just happened to be a very convenient ends to a mean.
I stopped playing her for similar reasons as listed above, with the note that I stopped playing her around the same time I stopped role playing publicly in 2019. Life was really hard at the time and I got stuck in a bunch of mutual drama (I've since reconnected and made up with many of them, but I was still put off on the whole). When last I left her, she'd gotten into a long term relationship with Erik de Carpentier (Phantom of the opera, long story) which was so cheesy and came full circle for me as a roleplayer, so I think I'm content letting her have her happily ever after.

For character ask, Eponine from Les Miz!
Ooh, this is an interesting one since I can still remember the Les Mis fandom around 2012/2013
Tumblr media
I was sort of on one side of the shipping war, in that I had a ship I liked, but at the same time my opinion was more "like what you want and leave other people alone, they're fictional characters why does it matter". In retrospect, I'm mad at the shipping thing as a whole. Yes, her life is hugely centered around a relationship with Marius and by extent Cosette (she bullied Cosette as a kid then Cosette gets the guy Eponine likes) but why does a happy ending for her have to be a relationship with Marius, Cosette, or someone else? I haven't really interacted with fandom in a couple years now so maybe it's changed and she's not getting paired off constantly, but yeah, I'd like to see more headcanons of Eponine stays single and finds hobbies that make her happy. Maybe she gets a pet. In the book there's that scene where she waters flowers, maybe she starts a garden, has a fun best friends garden thing going on with Jehan, that would be sweet.
Also, I have memories of people very aggressively pitting Eponine and Cosette against each other and flat out insulting Cosette just to raise Eponine up. And no. I'm not on board with that. I will defend Cosette to the end, even though back when I was engaged in fandom I mostly wrote about Eponine, because she was more relatable for teenage me (that has changed now that I'm an adult). Eponine is great, but she's not better than Cosette/more deserving of love/etc. Both are good and complex characters in different ways.
