Summary: Reader is performing at a comedy club when her old friend Lenny Bruce stops by.
Tumblr media
“Y/n!” I heard a voice shout from behind me. “Y/n! Finally.. I was wondering if you’d ever slow down.” They laughed
“Lenny?” I ask with a smile. “The one and only.” Was his reply. Definitely Lenny.
Taking my arm he led me through the crowded club to a dimly lit table. “Lenny, what are you doing here?” His answer was exactly what I’d expect. “Here to see you doll, why else?”
I scoffed at his particularly vague answer. “No… I mean what are you doing here?” Lenny hates or hated? So-called fancy comedy clubs. I know, says the man who got a gig at Carnegie Hall. But he dreads this place. Whether it’s because they wouldn’t take his jokes so lightly or because he thinks any where nice is full of pricks. “Ohh, oh I see, what am I doing here in this place specifically. Since you are such an extravagant comedienne why come here?”
Of course this being asked by Lenny was a rhetorical question. That didn’t stop my curiosity. I nodded with a flattered grin, waiting for the official answer. “I was just in the neighborhood .. I saw you were performing and didn’t have a good reason not to stop by.” He says quiet and slow, like he is every time he’s in a one on one conversation. “Yeah?” I question, It seems like every time I even speak to Lenny. As simple as this. Uncontrollable butterflies start to erupt inside of me. Every little compliment, even the facts he’s here to see me makes me smile like an idiot. “Yeah,” he says in a reassuring tone. “Although I was a bit offended you didn’t-” The fellow comedian was cut off by a young looking slim, tall, man.
“Please excuse me Ms. L/N. I’m sorry to interrupt but I was hoping to get an autograph?” He looked very awkward, continually looking back at a group of friends giggling and watching intensely.
“Oh my gosh. Of course!” I made myself turn my gaze away from Lenny. Writing my name on a newspaper “Y/N L/N AND LENNY BRUCE AFFAIR?” With my face in the middle of a skit as the cover. ‘Flattering picture! An even more flattering title!’ I sarcastically thought. “Thanks so much!” He exclaimed, giving a wink. Laughing to myself I looked back at Lenny. “I’m sorry Lenny what were you saying?” I asked. Having completely forgotten the topic of conversation. “People ask for your autograph now?” He asked more seriously than anything before.
“Well sometimes… that’s not a regular thing! No I guess he must’ve just seen me perform here before or something I don’t know but-” “Calm down!” Lenny stated in a more playful tone than the one before. “I wasn’t asking to call you out or something, it’s just incredible.”
A sigh of relief and embarrassment came from my chest, “Oh!” “You no that was a pretty interesting News headline, yeah?” The feeling of embarrassment hit again. I know I talk about Lenny a lot in skits. Wether it’s making fun of him or telling some story relevant to the joke. And hey maybe we’ve gone home together after a show once… or twice. But I know Lenny doesn’t want a relationship with me. “Friends with occasional benefits” he always said.
“ Interesting, you could say that….” I managed to choke out. Lenny laughed, “They’re not completely wrong, are they?” He asked with a cheeky smirk. “I wouldn’t call it an affair… persay.” I tried to keep my cool as he leaned in closer, making my breathe hitch. “Maybe not, but it’s definitely something.” He continued, leaning in closer. “Lenny, you’re the one who said that.. we were only friends, you know, better off that way?” He seemed to consider what I said, looking down, and back up at me. “Can a man change his mind?” Before I could come up with an answer he leaned in to kiss me. More gentle than any that he’d given me before. But before I could enjoy it I felt the flash of a camera hit us. “Lenny, we can't do this here.” I whispered. He answered quickly, “I know, come on.” Lenny ushered us through a near exit outside. It had just begun snowing. Falling and sticking on the city buildings and ground. Lenny walking quickly, still looked my outfit up and down. Black dress, black tights, and a light cardigan. “God, you’re gonna freeze out here.” He scolded, taking his suit jacket off and handing it to me. I thanked him, knowing he wouldn’t let me reject it. As a taxi cab drove by I quickly stuck out my hand and whistled. Lenny and I, freezing, hustled inside the cab. “Where to?” Asked the driver. Before I could answer at all, Lenny gave his address to the driver, and followed it with a wink to me. “I haven’t been here in awhile, you’ve changed a few things!” I admired his apartment, which definitely got a few upgrades over the past 8-9 months. He nodded “Yeah I’ve rearranged, even decorated.” I nodded whilst admiring the unfamiliar looking apartment.”Y/n?” Lenny asks at a quieter volume then he was speaking before. “Hm?” I hum in response “You never answered me. Earlier at the bar. When I asked if… a man can change his mind?” His eyes looked at me with a gleam of hope, along with underlying lust. My senses were overwhelmed by the apartment and Lenny’s longed for presence that it took me a moment to process what he had asked. “I think…” I started “that a man can change his mind.. if he really means it.” Without hesitation Lenny answered “He does.” “Is he sure?” “He is” “Then kiss me.” Lenny following the spontaneity of the previous interaction leaned in with a kiss. Less empty feeling than before. Now it felt full. It felt full of emotion and longing. The kiss deepened. “Bed.” He said sharply. Then picking me up, hooking my legs behind his back, without breaking the kiss he took us to his bed. “I love you.” He smiled, before showing his face into the crook of my neck.

Quirk info.
Your 6'3 and still growing! Your looks are a hybrid type. You have gills on your neck six in total. Pointy sharp teeth with only two rows of teeth instead of five. You have black eyes, any colored hair. You have a fin on your back. You're jacked, warm blooded, and most of the time everyone sees you as a villain or a cold blooded killer.
How your quirk works: Can turn into a full shark which is a Great White Shark. You are a great swimmer without turning which your tops speeds are a 15 mph but with turning its 35 mph . You can smell blood pretty well but you don't attack unless it something you eat like fish. Can't eat plants and can only eat meat.
You can lose control if your in that form for to long. You lose teeth a lot but your back teeth (second row) replace them. So your constantly either shallowing them or spiting them out. Your sixth sense goes crazy around electricity so you stay away from thing/people with electricity. Though it also greet for when you get attacked or things being thrown at you.
You don't have a ton of friends but you're friends with Bakugo, you don't bully Izuku but he's scared of you. Your family is pretty rough but you have a mother, father, 5 sisters and 4 brother. (Most of them are named after sharks in shows/movies!)
Mother: Ruth Fuka: 38 years old, 6'8ft
Father: Bruce Fuka: 37 years old, 5'9 ft (Jaws)
Siblings;
• Oldest Sister: Vixen, 17 years old, 6'4 ft
• Second Oldest Sister: Meg, 17 years old, 6'5 ft (The Meg)
• You: y/n, 14 years old, 6'3 ft
• Seventh Youngest Brother: Grim, 10 years old, 4'10 ft
• Sixth Youngest Sister: Lou, 10 years old, 4'11 ft (The bad guys)
• Fifth Youngest Brother: Bruce Jr, 10 years old, 4'8 ft (Finding Nemo)
• Fourth Youngest Sister: Scarlet, 10 years old, 4'10 ft
• Third Youngest Brother: Finley, 5 years old, 4'3 ft
• Second Youngest Brother: Lenny, 5 years old, 4'3 ft (Sharktales)
• Youngest Sister: Ruby, 5 years old , 4'0 ft
For looks just it's a rough idea. I don't own these nor could find the @.

Roughly where the placement of gills and scars are beside the x and the chest one. Ear that's circled is your ear. Also don't have to follow through with the looks. Its mostly for ppl who aren't good at imagining and need a little help!

“Of course you would show up tonight,” you groaned and face-planted on the bar.
Lenny Bruce’s eyebrows furrowed along with his smirk. “Glad to see you, too, sweetheart.” He took a seat next to you at the bar.
“Where are you coming from? Wait, let me guess...You just killed at a club, and you just can’t wait to tell me all about how you had a whole room laughing their asses off.” You took a swig of your drink.
He acted as if he was taken aback. “I had no idea I talked about myself so much.”
You didn’t respond. You didn’t even look at him. You just rubbed your aching temples. You heard Lenny sigh.
The comedian inquired, “Now, what could have someone as beautiful as you so down?”
Scoffing at the compliment, you answered, “It’s my writing...everything I’ve written in the past 3 months has been absolute shit...I’m never going to write again.”
To comfort you, Lenny started rubbing your back. “Aw, darling. I’m sure that’s not true. It pains me to see you so troubled.”
“I know you’re being sarcastic...but that feels niiiicccceeee.” You leaned against Lenny’s shoulder.
“Jesus Christ, how drunk are you?” he chuckled. “How about I read some of your stuff? I could tell ‘ya if it’s good or not.”
“I don’t let anyone read my unpublished stuff,” you recited your rule into his shoulder.
Lenny’s voice reverberated through his chest. “Well, I know that. I just figured since we’re friends...and you’re pretty drunk...”
You sat up to face him. You looked kind of pissed off, but then you nodded, “Fuck it.”
As soon as you got home, you flopped face-first onto your bed.
Lenny noticed the disarray of paper, pens, pencils, and journals all over your apartment. “Nice place you got here,” he commented to your near unconscious form.
He got a small groan in response.
Lenny found himself chuckling. He looked around the room again, and spotted something. Lenny decided to pick it up and read it.
    “Hey...hey. Y/n, wake up.”
In response to that, you opened your eyes a few hours after you fell asleep. “What?”
Lenny was sitting with his back against the bed. He had a stack of papers next to him and he had another paper in his hand. “Y/n, this is the greatest thing I’ve ever read.”
You vaguely recognized it as one of you least favorite ‘works.’ That really confused you because you’d never heard Lenny be so serious. Still not believing it, you scoffed again.
Lenny turned around and took your hand. “Y/n, I mean it. I don’t read much, but that story you came up with is sensational.”
“You must be more sleep-deprived than I am,” you concluded. “Come to bed.”
He was taken aback for real that time from the request. “I...Are you sure, doll?”
“As long as you don’t try anything, I’m sure.”
    Lenny laughed. “Of course, sweetheart.”
Once Lenny joined you, you settled yourself into his arms.
“You’re making it very hard not to try anything,” Lenny commented.
That got a laugh out of you.
Lenny pulled you a little closer. “Oh, I get it. You must still be drunk.”
“I must be,” you agreed, “I must be.”
Lenny continued to disturb the silence. “You should drop that story off to your publisher.”
“Mhm. I will,” you nodded, already half-asleep again.
    “Promise me, alright?”
“Okay, okay. Fine. I promise,” you cuddled closer to him, and the two of you fell asleep in each other’s arms.

Do It For You (1/?)
Okay, I did it after all. A Lenny Bruce x reader fic. But because I am lazy it will be in as many parts as it needs to be for it to be done. Enjoy!!!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Imagine being one of Mirium’s best friends. You’ve always been the rebel in your family but you haven’t quite broken out of your shell like Miriam has with her comedy. But when Lenny Bruce comes into your life that is all about to change.
You just finished watching one of Miriam’s friends do their comedy set. After seeing Miriam stand up on the stage at The Gaslight, you had been just a little obsessed with stand up comedy. While Miriam always told you that you were hilarious in your own right, you just never had the courage to stand under a spotlight. Other than sneaking to The Gaslight away from your family and the men they tried to set you up with and watching Miriam do her thing, this was your first comedy show. The man that Miriam took you to see was THE Lenny Bruce, of course you had only heard of him, you were over the moon that Miriam dragged you out of some place that wasn’t The Gaslight or the makeup counter at work.
All of the men that your family set you up with always fell under their category and of course any man’s code. The men were always boring, bookish (not that there is anything wrong with that), rude, and controlling. Obviously none of them ever worked out because it was always your fault, even to your family. Your whole life you were always the loud one, the too open one, the flousy. Even though you had never done anything to earn that particular nickname, a man had to actually stick in order for that happen. Of course you had done things like sex with men when your family sent you to college, but again they never stayed because you were too “outspoken and never did a thing that a girl like you was supposed to do.”
“Oh my, God he was fucking funny,” you exclaimed to Miriam after he finished his set. You sat there wiping the tears from your eyes you laughed so hard. You would never tell her, but Lenny Bruce seemed to be everything you needed. He was brash, outspoken, hilarious, but still a sweetheart. At least he looked like one.
“I told you so. Now you know why you need to get out more instead of watching me say fuck on stage.” She sipped from her martini.
“Oh you know why I can’t. First off I would have to leave my family, which they would disown me for, for sure. Then I’d have to find a better job than the makeup counter, which of course no newspaper company wants to hire a woman, let alone an unmarried one. Whether she’s qualified or not.” You angrily circled the rim of your glass and took a sip.
“But if you are that upset about your living situation, then you should get out even if it’s hard. At least have some fun once in a while.” You knew that Miriam was trying to help, and she was right. You just didn’t know how, didn’t know which direction to go, and it made you want to cry or throw something.
“Then why don’t you change your living situation?” You asked raising a perfectly plucked  eyebrow at her with a growing smirk.
“I will drink to that,” she shook her head in agreement and reached over to clink your glasses together. To which you happily obliged, and you both downed the rest of your cocktails.
“Well, well, well. What are we toasting to over here?” You heard a man ask from behind you, but you knew it was for Miriam so you didn’t even bother looking up from your drink. Miriam and you made eye contact having your usual silent conversation, asking if she could share the honest answer. You shrugged but decided to answer for the both of you which was normally very out of character for you; you figured it must have been the few drinks that you had during the show.
“We toasted to families and society and how fucked up they really are.” You went to look up at the man who was wearing a smirk of his own when he heard the answer come from you and not Midge.
“And which one’s more fucked up?” He asked trying to challenge you, but the way he looked at you. It felt like it was different than other men.
“Oh, I think they’re one in the same.” You commented back, causing the man to chuckle.
“So, who’s your friend here Midge? I don’t think I’ve seen her before?” He asked leaning against the back of Midge’s chair.
“This is one of my best friends, Y/N L/N.” Miriam gestured to you with a bright smile. “And, Y/N, I am happy and proud to introduce the great Lenny Bruce. Your set tonight was amazing, as all ways. You even made Y/N cry she was laughing so hard.”
“Oh, yeah?” Lenny looked down at you with a charming smile.
“Absolutely, you almost made me pee myself. It’s been a long time since I’ve heard a man laugh or say anything funny, maybe ever. But really it was very, very good.” You looked up at him and you couldn’t stop smiling, which made his smile grow, making you blush like the idiot you were.
“Thanks, darlin. I’m going over to the bar for a drink anybody need a drink, Midge?” Lenny nudged her, Miriam shook her head and raised her half full martini glass. “Ms. Y/N?” God, why couldn’t you stop smiling.
“I’ll take whiskey and coke?” You asked him, expecting him to reprimand you like everyone else, but it never came. He just nodded his head, still smirking and strolled on over to the bar. But of course you couldn’t help but notice the back side of him as he walked away.
“Oh God,” Miriam started laughing. “What was that?” She couldn’t stop laughing.
“What was what?” You asked, pretending to not know what she was talking about, so you just pretended to be looking at something else.
“I introduced the two of you, and then it was like I was completely invisible. You like him.” Miriam looked at you almost expecting you to be in denial. Which she got correct because you shook your head no.
“No, I don’t. I mean he’s not bad looking and he’s hilarious.” You excused.
“Yes, you do, Y/N, and I know he likes you too. It was like I wasn’t even here.” She argued.
“He did like me didn’t he,” the both of you leaned towards each other giggling like a bunch of schoolgirls. “But come on Midge. You know I would never be able to date a man like that, my family wouldn’t let me.”
“Y/N,” Miriam reached over to grab your hand in a friendly way. “I know that you’re scared of dating someone who your family doesn’t approve of or someone that they set you up with. But sometimes you need to do things for yourself, otherwise you will never be happy. Besides, I see the way you are when we’re out together or at work, who you are is bright, funny, and not afraid to speak her mind. Personally, I like that girl better and you should let her loose more.” You finally managed the courage to make eye contact with Miriam, because you liked that woman you were when your parents were not around just as she said. “Plus, even though the two of you just met. Lenny is over at that bar still staring at you.” You counted to three and looked to the bar over your shoulder, and sure enough there he was turning his head away when you looked over. You turned back around trying to hold back your smile as a blush started to creep all the way to your ears this time. “Since you met him, you have not stopped smiling and I can not remember the last time I’d seen you smile. He will be good to you and for you, I promise.” Miriam’s eyes shifted upward and she cleared her throat. “Shh, he’s coming back.”
“Shh, you were the only one talking” you laughed out.
“Here you go,” Lenny smirked down at you as he placed your drink in front of you, before pointing to the empty seat. “This seat taken?” He looked at Midge then looked back at you.
“No, no it’s open.” You gestured toward the empty spot. “Be my guest.”
“And I think that I will,” he pulled the chair out and sat down next to you. Closer than any man has tried to be to you since college; you were allowed to be a kindred spirit then.
“Oh, shit,” Miriam announced all of a sudden. Bruce and you snapped your eyes away from each other’s and looked  over at her with confusion. “I just remembered that Susie needed to talk to me about something at The Gaslight and I am so late, I’m so sorry.” She jumped to her feet and grabbed her purse. She was lying just to get the two of you alone, and you knew that she was lying; one, because she had always been awful at it. And two, because she never admitted when she was late.
“Sure you do,” you let slip out. Just so you could let her know that it was obviously bullshit.
“Sorry, Y/N, we’ll do another girl’s night some other time. I have to go.” She grabbed her purse and bolted for the bar door and left.
“Unbelievable,” you scoffed under your breath.
“Yeah,” Lenny agreed but he was only staring at you.
“I guess I should go?” You asked him, even though you didn’t really want to.
“Okay, but do you?” Lenny asked.
“Do I what?” You furrowed your brows. He smirked and chuckled at your ignorance.
“You said you should go,” Lenny started.
“Yes,” you copied him as you waited for him to finish.
“But do you want to go?” You cocked your head to the side and took a sip of your drink. No one had ever asked you want you wanted to do.
“No, for once I just want to actually drink with someone that I can talk to without having to be worried about being home at a certain time.” You answered him honestly.
“This is your first show ain’t it?” He asked, but Lenny started smiling like he already knew the answer.
“Kind of, yes. Midge was my first show, but that was by accident. I had heard of you and, you know, stand up comedy and I had always wanted to see one but my parents and rest of my family wouldn’t let me. The only thing I am supposed to be looking forward to is church, I practically had to beg them to let me get a job and go to school. I can’t even talk or say what I want.” You looked up and saw Lenny just staring at you. “I’m sorry, I’m just going on.”
“No, it’s good. If it makes you feel better.” Lenny shrugged as he took out a cigarette and lit it. “But tell me something?” His voice slightly jumbled from the cigarette in his mouth. “When was the last time you did something because you wanted to, be damned what anyone else has to say?” He took the cig out of his mouth.
“Never,” that was an easy answer for you. On the outside you knew you looked under control, but inside it felt like you were caged and getting angry and no one was listening to you because people felt like they didn’t have to.
“Then stay and drink with me.” Lenny offered as he handed you the cig.
“Fuck it,” you mummbled as you took the cig and brought it to your lips. As soon as you exhaled it felt and sounded like you were about to cough up a lung. “Should I also mention that I never smoked before either.”
“Then what have you done?” You expected Lenny to be annoyed or disappointed, maybe a mix of both. But he just sat there with his adorable smirk on his face.
“I’ve had sex.” It was quiet for a second but then the both of you just started laughing.
“Oh, then you’re definitely gonna wanna stick with me kid.” He put one hand on your knee, which you didn’t hate, and he slid you your drink so that you could breathe easier. And you could. You could breathe a whole lot better now.

Little Town [Part 2]
Words: 3487
Summary: Reader moves to London to escape her ties with her father and the Templar Order. In the process she makes friends with Jacob Frye and comes to the realization the world is a small place. Eventual Jacob x f!Reader.
Warnings: None as of now.
Author’s Note: Okay, here is part 2. Still a little bit slower than I wanted but I think I have some super cute ideas for the next part now that I’m over this hump. Please excuse any weirdness on Jacob’s part. I’ve been revisiting cut scenes to get a feel for him again but I still feel like I need to stretch my legs a bit. Enjoy! <3 <3 And I hope I got this tag thing right too.
Part 1 <-Here
You could barely suppress the soft groan that slipped from your lip as the sun beat in through the thin coverings. By the time you had arrived at your destination you must have been more exhausted than you thought; not only was it rather late in the morning, but you didn't remember the room having a window. Blinking slowly, you attempted to scrub the sleep from your eyes with the back of your hand as you sat up.
The chair was still firmly wedged beneath the door handle – a good sign that no one had attempted to bother getting in during the night. Freezing, you heard the distant chime of Big Ben, signaling that it was ten in the morning. You were going to be late if you didn't hurry up.
Throwing the covers back, you leaped from the bed and immediately began to pull the simple shirt and trousers off. Being sure to fold them neatly, and to put the bed back as it had been before, you dressed in the previous day's dress. It looked a bit ruffled, a few wrinkles creasing the skirts, but overall you deemed that it would be good enough to get back to your rented room. In a last ditch effort to look as if you hadn't just rolled out of bed, you attempted to tame your hair, praying you didn't look like a little urchin.
Satisfied as you could be without a mirror, you removed the chair from under the handle and set it neatly back at the desk. The door opened into a hallway that was empty save for a few pieces of furniture. To the left you could hear faint voices and the clinking of mugs, no doubt the men Jacob had mentioned last night. Speaking to a bunch of strangers wasn't exactly on your to-do list at the moment, so instead you decided to go to the right where you faintly remembered the front door being.
As you turned the corner you stopped short of running into a very tall solid man, a soft gasp leaving your lips. It wasn't Jacob, but someone you didn't recognize. He towered over you and was quite imposing, but he didn't frighten you. Instead, he offered you a warm smile that was almost as bright as his freshly shaved head. The bright green plaid shirt he wore accompanied by suspenders and light tan breeches was suiting, but it made you wonder if you had seen it somewhere before.
Brushing it off, you bowed your head slightly. “My apologies, sir,” you said softly.
“Forgive me, miss. You must be Ms. [Y/N],” he replied, nodding.
You cocked your brow, but nodded as well. “Yes, but I'm afraid I must be going.”
“Of course, I wouldn't want to hold you up. Did you grab something to eat?”
The low growl in your stomach in reply nearly made you grimace. You hadn't eaten since you had left the orphanage last night, and the thought of scrounging something up wasn't very appealing. At the very least the stalls in the market would be open and you could grab some bread and cheese on your way home. After a moment, you shook your head in answer to his question.
“No, I haven't.”
“Please, allow me to make something up for you.”
“Oh... I couldn't... I don't want to-”
“I insist,” he said, flashing another soft smile before gesturing to the rest of the hallway stretching out behind you.
Sighing inwardly, you returned his smile – though it was more halfheartedly than anything – and followed him to the room where you had heard the muted conversations earlier. When you entered it was larger than you had imagined. The table sat quite a few men, most speaking loudly and merrily, though a hush fell on the room as you entered. A small hearth sat off to the side, various pots and pants strewn around the cooking area.
You swallowed thickly as you surveyed the rest of the room. Most of the men were dressed in some variation of a matching uniform. They all had some article of clothing on that was green, but then it varied from there. Some were thin, some tall, but none of them was the man who had brought you here last night.
“Lads, this is Miss [Y/N], our guest. Miss [Y/N], this is Albert, Bruce, Otis, Lester, Luther and Miles,” the man behind you said, gesturing to each man. “And I am Lenny.”
“Oh... it's very nice to meet you all,” you offered politely with a small smile and a wave.
Each man greeted you just as politely. Lenny pulled out a chair for you, allowing you to sit before he pushed it up to the table.
“Thank you,” you said softly. “I really don't want to put you through too much trouble.”
You could feel the color rising to your cheeks as the man you slightly remembered as Lester set a plate in front of you. Luther brought some silverware, and Otis set a fresh plate of meats and cheeses on the table. The room began to fill with the strong scent of eggs and bacon, making your mouth water as the men gave you space.
Several of the men, you noted, looked as if they had had a rough night. Still slightly disheveled, it was clear that a bought of drinking had happened. You hardly held it against them though as Lester tried to engage you in conversation. He asked little questions – how long had you been in London? Did you have family in the area? Common sorts until Luther smacked him in the shoulder.
“Pardon m'brother, ma'am,” he said in a thick accent.
“It's quite alright,” you said, smiling. “I don't know many people here. It's much larger than where I'm from.”
Lenny shot the group a hard stare before setting a plate of bacon and eggs in front of you. “Here you are,” he said, returning to make another batch for the group.
“Lenny is quite the chef,” Otis chimed in, his mustache twitching as he took a sip from a cup of tea.
That you had to agree with as you delicately spooned the eggs into your mouth. It was quite delicious, seasoned better than anything you had done. The question of where exactly he had learned to cook died in your throat as you continued to eat. Coupled with the bacon, buttered bread, and cold meats you felt better than you had in a while. The men continued to joke and laugh, losing their interest in you for the moment. It was a relief, and allowed you to finish your meal without any interruptions.
Another man with a bowler hat set a cup of tea next to your plate as he retrieved one for himself. You thanked him softly and took a sip, enjoying the warmth spreading through to your fingertips. It was a pity you had to work today; their joy was infectious, and sitting there for the rest of the day with them was beginning to become more inviting.
Suddenly the room fell silent and all of the men stood up as two figures entered the room. You froze, the tea cup still between your hands, hovering above the saucer as a familiar voice flooded the room. Oh no. A sudden surge of self-consciousness forced you to set the cup down, your hands dropping to your lap. Was your hair tamed? Did you look like a scene from a tale meant to scare children?
“Good morning, lads,” Jacob said exuberantly, breaking through your thoughts.
“’Ey, boss,” they chimed.
Jacob's expression seemed to light up as he saw you at the head of the table, though the woman standing beside him didn't seem as impressed. They looked alike, and you wondered if this was the sister he had mentioned the night before. Slowly you began to make connections between the uniforms and the implied leadership of the ragtag gang. This must be the emerging group you had been hearing about from your neighbor.
In a last ditch effort to not stand out, you rose from your chair, your hands clasped loosely against your stomach. “Mr. Frye,” you said softly.
“You must be [Y/N],” the woman said, her tone even and pleasant, though you could feel your stomach squirming under her gaze.
“Yes. A pleasure to meet you...?”
“Evie Frye.”
So she was indeed his sister. For a moment you couldn't help but admired how beautiful she was with the freckles dotting her cheeks, highlighting her bright blue eyes. The strength that radiated from her momentarily made you feel small. Your gaze snapped to the window as you heard the bell of Big Ben ring again, signaling that another hour had gone by. Panic pooled in your stomach as you looked back to the group.
“I apologize. I really have to go, or I'm going to be late for work.”
Lenny seemed to notice your distress and sauntered over, grabbing your empty plate from the table. “I'll handle this, miss.”
“Allow me,” Jacob offered, gesturing with a hand to the door.
“Oh, I can get there just fine. I have to speak to my landlord anyways,” you insisted.
Their hospitality was slightly overwhelming, and you were beginning to feel as if you were overstaying your welcome - especially since you hardly knew these people aside from their names. Jacob seemed slightly taken aback, and you were sure he was going to push back until he offered a slight nod.
“To the door, then.” He left little room for argument as he stepped forward. The gang bid you farewell, which you elegantly returned, taking a moment to thank each of them.
Jacob walked slightly in front of you, guiding you out and down the long hallway you had attempted to sneak out of earlier. As you left the room you could feel Evie's gaze drilling into your back, a shiver running up your spine. It was almost like she could see straight into your soul, searching – but for what you weren't sure. Trying to push it away to the back of your mind, you looked up as Jacob pulled the door open.
A flood of sunlight came through the gaping doorway, pressing a pleasant warmth along your exposed skin. Trying to swallow past the lump in your throat, you stepped around the young man, turning to look at him once you were on the cobblestone path.
“Thank you so much, Mr. Frye. I can't tell you how much I appreciate this.”
“Jacob is fine,” he said, holding up a hand. “You are welcome whenever you may like.” He gave you a wink and a flash of a smug smirk, causing the heat to return to your cheeks along with a small tinge of pink.
Charming that one.
If you were bold you might have even given him a peck on the cheek in thanks for his hospitality. But you weren't quite that forward, so instead you allowed a smile to tug at the edges of your lips. “I may take you up on it. Until we meet again, Jacob.”
You turned on your heel, walking somewhat hurriedly down the path dare you do something to shatter the illusion that everything was in fact alright. Now you had other matters to attend to, and they were going to be difficult to do if the youngest Frye twin continued to plague your thoughts.
The walk back to the boarding house had gone by considerably faster than you had expected with your mind wandering. Nothing had been worthy of your attention – not even the brilliantly colored stalls and the screaming children had been enough to pull you away from your thoughts. Shaking your head, you stepped up to the house and jiggled the handle, finding it locked as firmly as the night prior.
You huffed out a breath between your teeth with a soft hiss as you looked around. The windows were shuttered, preventing any prying eyes from peeking into the house. Ducking down into the alley way butting up against the house, you noticed that several of the rooms had broken windows. A frown creased your brow as you looped around the back of the house through the neatly manicured gate.
Sitting next to the back door was a pile of items, all of which you recognized as belonging to various tenants. Your stomach began to tie itself in knots as you hurried over, digging through the pile until you found your bag stuffed with your belongings rather messily. All of your clothing was wrinkled and balled up – a completely loss of hours of tediously pressing them.
Your books spilled out as you bent over to try to neatly tuck the ends back into the bag. An unladylike curse slipped from your lips as you hurriedly picked them up.
“The 'ouse was taken back by the bank,” a voice quipped behind you, causing you to whip around and nearly lose the books nestled against your chest.
“What?” you breathed, reaching up to tuck a stray chunk of hair back into its place.
“The bank took it,” a rather large woman said, shaking her head. “Now we got no place t'go.”
You hesitated, glancing over your shoulder at the three story house. “Oh,” you mumbled, turning back too look at her. “Where are you staying?”
“The slums. Me sister lives there.”
That wasn't going to do you any good. The distant chime of Big Ben reminded you that you weren't going to have a job if you didn't get going either. Stuck between a rock and a hard place, you straightened and bowed your head slightly to the older woman. “Thank you. I must be going.”
“A'right.”
The woman seemed to lose interest in you as you pushed past her, shoving the books into your bag. Perhaps the orphanage would have an open room if you offered to work for Ms. Penny. She was a kind woman and could certainly use the help with all of the children she had in her care. Or perhaps the owner of the shop you worked in would allow you to sleep in the backroom until you had a place to stay. He and his wife had become like family, and you owed them a lot.
Sighing, you blinked the desperate tears from your eyes as you hurried down the street. It would work out – it had to. You weren't about to go running back to your father.
“Thank you, Mr. Wiltshire,” you said.
“Of course. I wish we could do more for you, but at least you won't be hungry,” your employer said as his wife handed you a basket with some dried meat and bread. “Here's a little extra. Take the day off tomorrow and see if you can find a place.”
“That's so kind of you. I'll pay you back, I swear.”
He waved you off, offering you a soft smile. He was a short portly man with glasses that were too small for his face. He was balding, and his graying hair stuck out at odd angle above his ears. The creases along his face were warm and told the story of a hard working but gentle laborer. His wife was just as short and wide with peppered long gray hair that was pulled back in a tight bun. Her dress was layered in shades of gray that matched her hair, complete with a white apron across her middle.
“Don't worry about it, dear,” his wife said, patting your arm. “Come back in a few days rested and right.”
“Of course. Thank you.”
Giving them one last forced smile, your turned and began your journey down the street, basket and bag in tow. The coming of dusk had brought a hush down on the streets that would surely burst into song and loud drunken babbles now that night was descending on the city. It seemed to be a popular pastime for the workers in the city – one that you didn't exactly indulge in. Getting black out drunk and wandering the streets didn't seem pleasant, and surely the morning after was anything but.
But perhaps a drink – no, you needed to save your money and find a place to live. Squabbling it away on drink was exactly the wrong thing to do, and if you weren't careful you were going to find yourself on the wrong side of a creditor.
“Ah, there you are.”
That familiar charming silky smooth voice brought you out of your daze. The upturned smirk and flashing hazel eyes made dread pool in your belly. Wetting your lips slightly, you gave him the same forced smile you had given your employers.
“Jacob,” you greeted pleasantly.
“I thought I might return this to you,” he said smoothly, holding out a book to you.
“Thank you. I must have completely forgotten about it.” You took it and gingerly put it into your already bulging bag.
Jacob looked between the basket, the bag, and your face, tilting his head slightly. “Going somewhere?”
“Uh, yeah. I was just heading down to the orphanage.”
“The orphanage? This late?”
He sure was nosy for someone who hadn't known you very long. It was almost off putting, leaving a bitter taste in the back of your throat. You hadn't started peppering him with questions, and being extended the same courtesy would have been nice. Nevertheless, you swallowed the nasty after taste of shame and annoyance to answer him.
“Yes, the orphanage.” You frowned and shifted the bag on your shoulder to alleviate the pain from the strap digging into your skin. “Surely there's somewhere you must be, Mr. Frye. I would hate to take up all of your time now that you've returned my book.”
Jacob snorted softly; if he was offended he didn't show it. Instead he gestured to the things you were carrying. “May I offer some assistance then?”
“I've got it. You've done more than enough.”
Your tone was getting sharper with a note of distress the longer you stood there. If you were to get to the orphanage any later you would risked missing Ms. Penny and waking whomever was on night duty. Not to mention the eager faces that would press themselves up against the glass if they were to get wind that you had stopped by.
“If I didn't know any better, I'd say you're trying to get rid of me,” the young man drawled.
You weren't getting anywhere with this, and an attempt to shoulder past him was met with him stubbornly following you down the street.
“I have a proposition for you.” You stopped in your tracks and turned to face him, nearly causing him to lose his balance as he side-stepped around you. Brushing some imaginary dust from the front of his jacket he allowed a small smile to crawl across his lips. “I know of a place you can stay.”
“How-”
Jacob cut you off, holding up his hand. “You can have the room and all I ask in return is some assistance with a few affairs.”
“Have... have you been stalking me?!” Your tone was incredulous as you nervously glanced between him and the nearest pub, which was beginning to spill over with patrons. If you had to scream it would surely be heard by everyone is a several block radius. Before you could even begin to think of opening your mouth to holler Jacob continued his ramble.
“I wouldn't call it 'stalking' you. Now what do you say? I do believe it would be a benefit to us both.”
“And I don't suppose any of these 'affairs' are illegal?”
“Oh, no, of course not. Simple things, some book keeping, perhaps a bit of the upkeep.”
You stared at him suspiciously, but his charming grin didn't falter as you wavered. He obviously didn't mean you any harm – if that was the case he could have easily done something the previous night. The men that morning had been very welcoming, made you breakfast even; not to mention you didn't have anywhere else to go at the moment. You weren't one to look a gift horse in the mouth, and Mr. Frye was giving you an easy way to put a roof over your head without being outright insulting.
“Alright,” you conceded, allowing him to take the bag from you.
“Excellent!” Jacob chirped, slinging the bag over his shoulder as you began to walk together in the opposite direction. “This is going to be a wonderful partnership.”

Midnight in Paris with Lenny Bruce. 1

Pairing: Lenny Bruce x Fem!Reader
Summary: Drinks, laughter and cigarettes with Lenny Bruce.
Warning: drunk people, I think just
A/N: This series is inspired by the film Midnight in Paris. English isn't my fist language. Any mistakes I apologize for. Constructive criticism and supportive messages are always welcome, it motivates me to keep writing.
Tumblr media
I walked through the empty streets of Paris, letting the sound of my shoes hitting the cobblestones echo through the narrow alleyways. I was determined to escape my troubles, at least for one night. The cool night wind gently caressed my face as I immersed myself in the magical atmosphere of the city.
Without a specific destination, I allowed myself to be guided by the golden lights adorning the elegant buildings. I found myself drawn to the magnificent Eiffel Tower, whose nighttime sparkle seemed to hypnotize me. I sat on a nearby bench, allowing myself to be enveloped by the tower's imposing presence and the sense of freedom in the air.
Following my instincts, I made my way to the banks of the River Seine, where the gentle murmur of the water calmed me. The scene was truly enchanting, with the reflective lights dancing on the surface of the river, creating a spectacle of reflections and shadows. I closed my eyes for a moment, allowing myself to simply feel the serenity of that Parisian night.
Still wandering aimlessly, I found myself in Montmartre, immersed in the bohemian atmosphere and narrow cobblestone streets. I felt the artistic vibe of the place, with the illuminated cafes and figures engaged in lively conversations. There, I allowed myself a moment of contemplation, observing the street artists and absorbing the creative energy of the place.
As the night progressed, I finally realized that my troubles had dissipated, at least temporarily. I felt rejuvenated, inspired, and above all, grateful for the opportunity to lose myself in the magical streets of Paris. I understood that sometimes the best solution to problems was to allow yourself to experience the beauty and freedom that life had to offer.
Walking a little further down the cobbled street, I found myself sitting on the steps of the church of Saint-Étienne-du-Mont, at Place du Panthéon, watching the lights of the Parisian night. I was far from home, disoriented, and attempting to find meaning in my life.
A distant sound echoed in my ears, a bell, I would say. I looked at my watch and saw that the hands indicated it was midnight, I wouldn't return to my hotel so soon.
Precisely at that moment, an old Peugeot, immersed in a nostalgic aura, drove up Rue de la Montagne Sainte Geneviève, its engine humming softly.
I watched the car with a mixture of fascination and disbelief. It was as if the past was unfolding before my eyes, bringing with it all the charm of 1960s Paris. I felt a wave of excitement run through my body, inspiring me to move forward, explore new possibilities. In that moment, I realized that the answers I was seeking could be hidden in the fabric of time itself.
Inside were two men and two women, stylishly dressed in clothes reminiscent of the 1960s, with champagne and glasses, serving from an open bottle and drinking cheerfully.
"Come, get in." One of the men spoke merrily.
"Huh?" I murmured confused.
"Come on, we're running late." The woman next to the car window spoke, her French accent distinct. She opened the car door.
"You must be mistaking me for someone else."
"Not at all, come on, get in." the same woman said.
"Look, I'm a little drunk."
"Come on, for God's sake, we can't stay here all night." the woman said.
I stood up from where I was and went to the car, the other two people besides whom I was talking were humming drunkenly.
"You have a wonderful old Peugeot, I have one in New York, I usually collect..." I was interrupted by the woman pulling me into the car.
"Let's go" She laughed. "We have parties to go to."
"What parties?" I asked, I was in between the two women.
"Let's go" The other man said, starting the car.
"Here, have some champagne." The other woman handed me a glass of the drink.
The car left the street, leaving behind the majestic facade of the church and taking me somewhere I didn't know, but I didn't care. Inside the car, I contemplated the grandeur of Paris at night, with its illuminated streets and these four lively people. Laughter flowed genuinely from my mouth, maybe exploring Paris wouldn't be so bad after all.

*******
1955. So far, you’d been in the game for five years. You’d starred in huge Broadway shows. The people loved you. They all saw the untroubled starlet of the stage. The truth was, you were miserable.
You met Lenny while you were in rehearsals for Guys and Dolls in 1950. That was back when you were much less known than Lenny. The two of you fell in love, and the relationship was more than marvelous.
However, both of your careers were growing. In contrast to Lenny’s crass, vulgar image, yours was pure and untouched. Only Lenny seemed to see the problems developing due to the two of you being together.
He left you in 1953. Your manager framed you to be the hero after getting such an apparent terrible influencer out of your life, but you were devestated. You missed Lenny more than anything.
So, there you were. Two years later. 1955. You were in rehearsals for a musical called Damn Yankees, and you were exhausted. You’d decided to go to a little hole-in-the-wall club to unwind.
Suddenly, he was there onstage. You realized you’d been unconsciously looking for him. You frequented lesser known places like that, and it wasn’t only to avoid getting recognized. You wanted to see Lenny. And there he was.
Lenny noticed you about ten minutes into his set. The lights weren’t too bright, so he was able to spot you in your little corner seat.
He stopped midway through a sentence. “And it was odd, ‘cause I--uh...I, um...You know what, folks? That’s, uh, actually all I have for you tonight...Um...Make sure to tip your waiters, because that’s where I’ll be after skipping out in the middle of this gig.” Lenny couldn’t get off the stage fast enough. He disappeared behind the curtain.
Out of shock, you stayed in your seat for a moment. You’d seen Lenny bomb before. You’d seen him bomb many times, actually. But never, not once, did you see Lenny Bruce get nervous on stage. You followed the comedian into an alleyway.
“Are you running away from me?” you questioned, flabbergasted, when you saw him.
Cringing, Lenny slowly turned around. He was yards away from you. “Would you be hurt if I said I am?”
“Yes!” you seethed, “Yes, I would, Lenny, because you’ve been running away from me since I was in fucking Can-Can, and I don’t know why!”
Lenny cocked his head. “Oh, really? You don’t know why? Little Miss Sunshine of the Stage can’t figure out why the dark and scary comic left her?”
“No, I can’t,” you pushed back. “Because we were fine! You and me, we were happy. And if I know you at all, you were just as wrecked as I was when you left.”
    To that, Lenny didn’t respond.
“I miss you so much, Len...Dammit, I wish you would at least come over here and talk to me about this like a normal person.” Tears were starting to sting your eyes.
He shook his head. “I can’t do that.”
“Why not?” You were at a complete loss.
“Because if I come anywhere near you right now, I won’t be able to leave again.”
    Silence filled the air.
“Why’d you go, Len?” you asked so quietly that, for a moment, you wondered if he heard you.
Lenny glanced to the ground. “I’m no good for you, Y/n.”
“You mean, you’re no good for my image,” you corrected, “Who I am to them. We both know I’m a big girl, I can handle my booze better than most of this city, and I can say things that can make the whole Navy blush.”
Lenny chuckled. Under his breath, he agreed, “Yeah, we both know that.” His eyes were still on the ground when he continued, “But that image, that’s important to you too. That image pays your bills and gives you your dream. It killed me to get in the way of that. I can’t do that to you.”
“Fucking hell, Lenny. Do you know what you’re saying? Lenny, look at me,” you urged to get his eyes off the ground.
When he complied, you saw he had tears to match yours.
“I don’t care about the fucking image. I can change it however I want, and nobody can say shit about it. You know why? Because it’s my image. And if they think they can use that against me and not give me roles because of it, I’ll just grab them by the balls and show them that I can do whatever I want ‘cause I’m the most talented person in this town.”
He laughed, “You got that right.”
“So, please,” you begged, “Come back to me.”
Lenny scoffed as he stood up straight. “You see, we keep talking about your image when you’re the one making me as soft as a rabbit.” Lenny made his way over to you in long strides. When he got to you, he tilted your head up so he could kiss you.
The kiss was firm, stable. Lenny was telling you he’d never leave you again. As you snaked your hands under his trenchcoat to feel him there in front of you, and as you tugged hard on the lapels of his jacket, you were telling him that you’d never let him go anywhere else again.
Down at the end of the alleyway, a crowd started to gather. “Is that Y/n L/n and Lenny Bruce?” “Holy shit, I think it is!”
“And so it begins,” Lenny whispered in a jokingly ominous tone against your lips before pulling you even closer to him.
