Like they've already bonded over food as that's a huge interest the two share but like deep conversations where they openly blame themselves for their horrible relationships like you have MMC blaming himself for staying so long with a guy who didn't like him and wasn't good to him verse Lavinia blaming herself for being so easily tricked into loving someone who was under a spell and how it wasn't even real to begin with.

i think it's really nice that ursula le guin was careful to specifically mention in lavinia that vergil isn't so much a real historical person as a character we've all constructed in our collective imagination. because now she's also a character we've all constructed in our collective imaginations.

#that reference the vergil makes-- ostensibly as he lies dying in brundisium in 19 bce-- to meeting dante in the wood kills me #he's dante's vergil and wilder's vergil and broch's vergil and le guin's vergil and mine #which i suppose means he's not his own. as lavinia is not her own. that's what it means to live on in memory. #its just me and the ursula k le guin in my head and the vergil in her head in my head and the aeneas in his head in her head in my head... #mine #aeneidblogging

ok last thing i will say about this but i just. i dunno! i guess i'm just not the target audience for these myth retellings but if the entirety of how a book is pitched to me is "greek myth but make it feminist and queer!" then i just don't care. i don't!! i've read a variety of retellings/adaptations of/stories that incorporate greek myths aimed at different age-level audiences, and if all you've got to pull me in is to make it gay or whatever, that doesn't excite me. unless you're actually going to engage with the material outside of superficially making it gayer or whatever then you're not really adding much to it for me. i can make dionysus and pentheus have raging sparagmos-sex or whatever in my head on my own. give me something i haven't seen before!!!

#I devoured this and am still reeling #the only retelling worth existing #ursula k. le guin #knows vergil by heart and loves him dearly and honours him every step of the way #her lavinia knows the ambarvalia song and understands it; #her lavinia does not know venus as the greek goddess of love and lust #but when vergil quotes to her the beginning of the de rerum natura she is swept away because those words put a name to her religious feeling #her lavinia meets vergil when he is on the verge of dying and by virtue of this liminal state he knows it all but only through a veil #and at one point he cannot distinguish between that time he invented the underworld for his aeneas #and that other time he travelled the underworld with a man he met in a deep dark wood and I was SCREAMING #btw I loved it please everybody read it #tagamemnon #lavinia #arma virumque cano #vergil #the aeneid
