Exclusive Interview: Clea DuVall & Laura Kittrell on adapting Tegan & Sara's queer coming-of-age memoir High School
Exclusive Interview: Clea DuVall & Laura Kittrell on adapting Tegan & Sara’s queer coming-of-age memoir High School
When Clea DuVall read an early version of High School, Tegan and Sara Quin’s bestselling memoir about their teenage experiences, growing up as musically gifted queer twins in 90s suburban Canada, the actor and filmmaker immediately knew that she wanted to bring their book to the screen. As well as directing several episodes of the resulting television adaptation, which had its world premiere at…

Production Designing HIGHSCHOOL, for the talented Clea Duvall, Laura Kittrell, and DP Carolina Costa, was a refreshing dive into nineties suburban malaise --- and Calgary playing ITSELF! The whole team had a blast reproducing gig posters, invading record stores, taking over Crescent Heights High (where Tegan & Sara went to school), and generally stewing in a grungy stoned teen haze of feelings. EXCLAIM! magazine called it “impeccably drab” --and that makes me very happy. Mission accomplished ;)  “It’s a heartfelt, eventually rather touching portrait of sisterhood – the actual and broader kinds – and of the power of friendship, the vexed business of negotiating the complexities of a queer adolescence, finding yourself, and the joys of uncovering a voice and a talent you can make your own.“ Lucy Manga, The Guardian. The show came in as Rolling Stone’s #7 on the Best TV Shows of 2022: https://www.rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv-movie-lists/best-tv-shows-2022-barry-andor-the-bear-reservation-dogs-severance-1234640414/

Thirsty as F*ck [Season 1, Ep. 4]
Congratulations, you made it to the end of 2020. And in doing that, you’ve accomplished something that took a lot of willpower and strength to get through—Pat yourselves on the back. And get into this episode.
Now realizing that this entire decade seems to be strife with chaos, ignore that first paragraph. I was so ignorant. And oh, so naive.
This episode is written by Laura Kittrell and directed by Kevin Bray.
The episode opens with Lawrence jogging to “Conflict of a Man” by Erimaj. We get some great scenic shots of South LA that are beyond stunning. As he finishes his jog and heads back home, he passes the stained couch from the previous episode sitting on the curb. Surprisingly, no one has picked it up yet, and it’s there as a harsh but real reminder that their relationship has so much work that they have to accomplish. I’m not sure why they threw out the couch before they purchased another one, but he goes in, and there’s a broken lawn chair in its place. Inside, Issa is taking a shower, but she gets a glimpse of sweaty Lawrence from his jog that initiates awkward shower sex. Shout out to one of the many appearances of Jay Ellis’ little booty.
Whoever tried to sell us on the appeal of shower sex needs to atone for their sins.
Giving in, Issa and Lawrence go shopping for a new couch. You can see from their interactions - compared to the first episode. They are very much revisiting their honeymoon phase. While they are in post-let’s-work-it-out bliss, they watch a married couple fight about lotion dispensers.
Best line of the episode, a disgruntled wife says dryly to her husband: “I hate you.”
Later that day, Molly is on her date with super hot doc, Brandon Bell [Troy Fairbanks, if you watch Dear White People], and they’re having typical date conversations. It gets weird when Molly tells him that he needs to be considerate and let her know where he’s headed via text. We later learn that this is date three so there hasn’t been anything explicitly hinting at them being legitimate. They were still having a “get to know you” conversation, so needing to know someone’s whereabouts is strange, but Dr. Hottie definitely could have made that vocal, too. Anyway, Molly is just going through the dating process. It’s not that deep. Hot men come and go.
The next day she walks past a loud-ass Da Da, noting that “black people stay loud.”
It’s me. I’m black people.
On Issa’s end, she gets a surprise visit from Daniel at work. He is consistently overstepping his boundaries. Literal Kill Bill sirens go off in my head at the very notion of someone showing up at my job without announcement. He apologizes for what happened that night in the car. If you need me to refresh your memories, Issa kissed Daniel after “breaking up” with Lawrence, and she told Daniel she wasn’t sure if she was ready to pursue anything serious. Daniel immediately shuts that down and says that she would be nothing more than a booty call.
It was awkward. It was sad. You know the story.
Issa takes this moment to tell him that she’s back with Lawrence now, and they shuffle through the rest of their conversation in a series of strange little moments. Molly rightfully criticizes her for even entertaining the idea of flirting with Daniel, and Issa agrees, saying that she is now “Bloop-bloop”-ing with Lawrence. ***Bloop-blooping is signifying the elevation of them trying to work through their relationship.
Lawrence goes to work and gets assigned to a section he has no experience in by his boss. Also, something that was very triggering to hear, “You’re smart. You’ll catch on.” Being forced to take on other jobs you lack training on is so common that I knew there was a collective sigh when Lawrence’s boss said that to him. Of course, Lawrence can’t quit the job out of frustration because he needs the money! He’s been depending on Issa for too long. Sometimes, you just have to suck it up and become a corporate servant. And for Lawrence, who has spent well over a year being jobless because pride would not let him give in to a job, it’s pretty damn ironic that he’s now at a job doing every single thing he said he never would do. Welcome to adulthood.
As Freida and Issa bond after work, she suggests that Issa use Daniel for their kids’ career day. Issa texts Daniel instead of telling Freida that she isn’t comfortable doing that? Before I knew what was going to happen in the show, I knew what was going to happen in the show.
Does that make sense?
Molly is now on a date with Jidenna, and they bond over microaggressions and white folks at work. He cheers her up with a round of “black tax” jokes, then the two dance to “Girl,” and the romance begins to bloom between them.
After Issa’s after-work session and bonding with Freida (and her text to Daniel), she comes home to Lawrence, who asks her about work, but she casually forgets to mention that Daniel is coming to the career day they’ve planned for the kids. Alright, so Issa actively possesses guilt about Daniel. She hasn’t told Lawrence about the kiss, and now she’s purposely keeping secrets about Daniel from him. It is fascinating to witness Issa plant these seeds of being a dishonest spouse. What is the point of telling Lawrence you want to make it work when you’re still going to lie to him? Even worse, the next day, Lawrence is not telling Issa about Tasha. Is it common for couples to keep things like this from each other? I feel as though if it’s harmless, then mentioning them should not be an issue.
Nevertheless, Lawrence sits with Tasha and enjoys the praises she gives him up which. At this point, Issa is trying her best to help with his confidence, so I don’t know why he feels like he still needs to hold on to Tasha for this. Because let’s be honest, that’s the only reason he’s holding on to Tasha.
After Molly’s date with Jidenna, she tells her boss that she doesn’t feel comfortable talking to Da Da about her behavior. So the boss decides to do it. Molly later sees all the partners ganging up on Da Da in the conference room, and it’s not looking good. Molly’s conversation with Da Da earlier about assimilating to fit in with the white people has come full circle, but Molly feels more sympathetic than vindicated. Da Da is learning about corporate white folks the hard way. We’ve all been there.
It’s career day, and Daniel is sharing his garbage-ass beats with the kids. After some fun and conversations about his job, he tells the kids how amazing Issa is, and they joke that he has a crush on her. Kids have the best intuition, so they are picking up on the chemistry stirring between the two. After the successful career day, Daniel extends an invitation to a studio session, and Issa doesn’t say yes or no. Because why? She likes making bad decisions.
Now that her head is rightly all messed up about Daniel, she fantasizes about him in the staff mirror. As we all know, it’s her subconscious telling her about her lingering feelings for Daniel. They never really left, and she’s starting to lean in too closely to the chaos. Daniel mentioned earlier that he worked on some beats for Ty Dolla $ign, so of course, Ty Dolla $ign makes an appearance in this fantasy. Lawrence interjects, asking her what she’s doing, but it’s revealed to actually be Molly.
Being the voice of reason.
Again.
Her attempts to keep Issa grounded are not going well.
And to the surprise of no one, the kids at school find Issa’s “Broken Pussy” video and laugh about it. Millennials. I think the most realistic thing about this show is the many L’s Millennials take. Nothing has felt more relatable.

SOULMATESSSS
Ok so I’m a little (massively) stressed for the implications of the finale and how they’ll affect Fez, I think he is going to be straight up not having a good time next season and I can’t see it not affecting his relationship with Lexi BUT for some reason my mind also went to the ending of Insecure (spoilers for that below).
The writers mentioned how they didn’t originally plan to have Issa and Lawrence end up together at the end due to the loooong history of mess there, but there was a BEAUTIFUL episode where they reconnected and you can just see how much they are each other’s person, and this fed the finale and giving them both their happy ending with each other, and I feel that there’s similarities here with Fez and Lexi.
As the Insecure writers said (quote below), you can’t spend all this time developing these two and basically showing that they’re soulmates and then deny them their future together. All the scenes of Fez & Lexi talking show their deep connection, how they’re on the same page with each other on the things that truly matter, and they’re best friends who can be goofy or serious together. SO, Sam Levinson if you don’t make it so, Fexi Hive will be under your bed :)
Quote about Issa & Lawrence - soulmate part bolded:
Rae: And you know, we had different endings in mind. And as the season progressed and I became Issa Dee — you know, it’s one thing to write for her and then to become her — I found myself missing him. And I found that, in a sense, we were denying Issa her happiness. One of our writers, Laura Kittrell, was just like, with that episode we basically said that they’re soulmates, and to deny Issa her soulmate is, in a sense, denying her her happiness. I think they needed that time to grow apart. Lawrence for sure needed that time to reconcile his relationship with Condola and to see the blessing that Elijah was in his life and to grow on his own. And I think separately, as they had done before, they became ready for one another. I think so much of the themes of the last couple of seasons have been that happiness is a choice, and Issa daring to be happy with Lawrence felt fitting to me. But it was a journey. We both went on journeys.

Cedric the Entertainer
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cedric Antonio Kyles (born April 24, 1964), better known by his stage name, Cedric the Entertainer, is an American actor, comedian, director, and game show host. He was originally the host on It's Showtime at the Apollo. He also hosted BET's ComicView during the 1993-1994 season and Def Comedy Jam in 1995. He is best known for co-starring with Steve Harvey on The WB sitcom The Steve Harvey Show and starring as Eddie in Barbershop. He hosted the twelfth season of daytime version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire in the 2013-2014 television season. He also starred in the TV Land original series The Soul Man, which aired its fifth and final season in 2016.
Early life
Cedric was born on April 24, 1964 in Jefferson City, Missouri, and is the son of Rosetta (née Boyce), a school teacher, and Kittrell Kyles, an employee of a railroad company. His only sibling is his younger sister Sharita Kyles Wilson, an adjunct communications instructor at the University of Memphis in Memphis, Tennessee.
He was raised in Caruthersville, Missouri, but after junior high school he moved to Berkeley, Missouri. Cedric is a graduate of Berkeley High School in St. Louis' northern suburbs. While Cedric attended Berkeley High, he developed a very severe rash on the top of his head, forcing him to wear a hat for the rest of his career. In 2005, Cedric told CNN he no longer cares about his rash and is proud of it. He continues his involvement with his high school by awarding a scholarship each year to a graduating senior through his Cedric the Entertainer Charitable Foundation Inc. The foundation's motto is, "Reaching Out...Giving Back." Cedric majored in Mass Communication at Southeast Missouri State University and worked as a State Farm insurance claims adjuster, and substitute high school teacher before becoming a full-time comedian. He is also a member of Kappa Alpha Psi. Mr. Kyles recently (May 2015) was awarded the Honorary Doctorate Degree in Fine Arts and Humanities from Lincoln University of Missouri (his parents' alma mater).
In 1996, Cedric moved into acting, playing Steve Harvey's friend, Cedric Jackie Robinson, on the sitcom, The Steve Harvey Show. His acting career grew and he began appearing in movies, including Dr. Dolittle 2, Barbershop, Barbershop 2: Back in Business, Ride, Serving Sara, Johnson Family Vacation, Intolerable Cruelty, Man of the House, Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events, Madagascar and Be Cool. Cedric was the subject of controversy when his Barbershop character made unpopular remarks regarding Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks. These comments were spoken in character, were part of the script, and he has never apologized for them. In the 2005 animated film Madagascar, Cedric voiced Maurice the aye aye. In October 2005, Cedric joined the Champ Car auto racing series as a part owner. Cedric appeared in the movie Charlotte's Web as the voice of Golly the gander. While his acting career grew, Cedric continued stand-up and traveled the country as one of the Kings of Comedy headliners, with Steve Harvey, D.L. Hughley and Bernie Mac. The act was later made into a film by Spike Lee called The Original Kings of Comedy. Cedric briefly had his own sketch comedy show called Cedric the Entertainer Presents, but it never caught on and was canceled after one season. The show had been renewed for a second season, but Fox canceled it before the season began. He then appeared in the 2003 PlayStation 2 video game Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2004. His most recent HBO Comedy Special was titled Cedric The Entertainer: Taking You Higher. Two of the background dancers from the special were Kamilah Barrett and Sandra Colton, who were also finalists in Fox's So You Think You Can Dance. He also recorded comedic interludes on two multi-platinum selling albums, Nelly's Country Grammar (2000) and Jay-z Black Album (2003).
Cedric appeared in the 2007 film Code Name: The Cleaner, a comedy in which he plays Jake, a janitor with amnesia who may be a secret undercover government agent involved in an illegal arms conspiracy. He then starred in the 2008 films Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins and Street Kings.
Cedric appeared as the lead comedian at the White House Correspondents Dinner but jokingly remarked that he was unprepared because he thought that he would follow a humorous speech by President George W. Bush but instead followed First Lady Laura Bush, who he said was very funny.
Cedric the Entertainer was inducted to the St. Louis Walk of Fame on June 7, 2008. His star is located at 6166 Delmar.
Cedric the Entertainer was the special guest host for WWE Raw on September 21, 2009 in Little Rock Arkansas. During the show, he participated in a wrestling match, defeating Chavo Guerrero by pinfall. The match also featured Santino Marella as a guest referee. Cedric also got help with an unknown wrestler dubbed The Sledge Hammer (played by Imani Lee) and Hornswoggle.
In March 2010, Cedric made his directorial debut with Dance Fu, produced and funded independently by his company Bird and a Bear Entertainment with producer Eric C. Rhone. The film starred comedian Kel Mitchell. Cedric made a cameo appearance in the film as a Homicide detective. It was released straight-to-DVD on October 4, 2011.
Cedric was recently seen in the Broadway revival of David Mamet's "American Buffalo," the story of three small-time crooks who come to blows during a plot to steal a valuable coin collection.
In 2003, Cedric was featured in the Korean rap artists Drunken Tiger on their album 'Foundation' on the 17th track '뉘우침' (repentance).
In a June 21, 2011 interview, Cedric confirmed that his latest reality game show, It's Worth What?, was going to air on July 12, 2011 on NBC, however, the start date was delayed by one week to July 19, 2011. Between 2012 and 2016, Cedric played the main character in a new TV Land original series, The Soul Man, featuring Niecy Nash. The sitcom returns for its fourth season in 2015.
Cedric was the host of the American TV show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire beginning with its 12th season in national syndication, which premiered on September 2, 2013. "With his deep roots as a successful stand-up comedian and actor, Cedric will bring his fresh approach and unpredictable fun to the show," said Janice Marinelli, president, Disney-ABC Domestic Television. On April 30, 2014 Cedric announced that he will be leaving Who Wants to Be a Millionaire after the 2013-2014 season to focus on his busy schedule. Actor Terry Crews took over as host on September 8, 2014.
Personal life
He is married to Lorna Wells. They have two children, Croix (born 2000) and Lucky Rose (born 2003), Cedric also has a daughter Tiara from a previous relationship.

'Insecure' Star Issa Rae Credits Weight Loss To Paleo Diet, Jogging - Women's Health
Don’t let the Awkward Black Girl persona fool you: Issa Rae oozes confidence. A confidence that makes itself apparent in her ability to walk the Emmys’ red carpet and say, “I’m rooting for everyone black.” Or to share the big screen with and work for a 14-year-old executive producer (Marsai Martin) in her latest project, Little. Or to sit down with a complete stranger after an hours-long photo shoot and have the sort of conversation usually reserved for close friends.
Frankly, after Issa tells me that she chooses her events wisely and doesn’t agree to projects she has no passion for, I feel quite honored that she’s willing to hang at all.
“It’s kind of shady that y’all did this [shoot] now, because I’m in an eating phase,” Issa says with a laugh. Her HBO brainchild, Insecure, isn’t filming at the moment, she explains, and those toned Michelle Obama arms she sports on-screen aren’t necessarily a year-round thing. As we settle in, she shares that in addition to using the downtime to write, she’s been trying her hand in the kitchen. “I just started cooking Senegalese food, which I’m really excited about.” After watching her Louisiana-born mother learn to cook various recipes inspired by her Senegalese father, Issa realized there was no reason she couldn’t do the same.
She has every reason to come off that way: Insecure—which will soon begin production on its fourth season—is Issa’s baby. She executive-produces, writes, and stars on the HBO series and has an Emmy nomination to her name because of it. In 2015 she published The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl, a delightfully honest memoir that, much like her breakout YouTube Web series of the same name, displays a relatability that has been crucial to her comedic writing fame.
But for Issa, success on the Web looked different from success on television—literally. “When the Web series started, I was very, very broke. Then more opportunities began to come,” she explains. “I was gaining New Money Weight.” As Issa saw it, the seemingly unlimited access to good food was one of the perks of her hustle. “When you get a good job, you’re like, ‘I can afford to eat at restaurants all the time!’ That adds up in weight.”
Issa Rae created and stars in HBO’s Insecure
HBO
It wasn’t long before that New Money Weight started to mess with her self-esteem—so much so that she was motivated to make some changes. Not under doctor’s orders, or because she was trying to hit some magical BMI, but for herself. “Time to work out is so limited, but when I first started seeing myself on TV, I was like, ‘I gotta make time.’ ”
Like for so many of us, the desire to exercise every day doesn’t come naturally to the 34-year-old L.A. native, and she freely admits it. “I was a big excuse person when it came to exercising and eating right. I’d have spurts of trying to work out and being good. Then once I fell off, I’d be like, ‘Well, there’s always next year. Let me make it my New Year’s resolution.’ But even then, I would still be eating wrong while exercising vigorously.” (Issa is more “paleo-leaning” in her eating habits now, having rediscovered bacon after being a vegetarian for 15 years.)
Lacking the time to work out while shooting Insecure definitely didn’t help her consistency, but what did was finding the exercise regimen that worked for her. When she’s intent on getting that work in, her alarm is set for 4:55 a.m., and instead of heading to her local gym, she takes to the streets.
“Let me not put extras on it,” she says, lest I think she’s about to detail some sort of extreme CrossFit-inspired routine worthy of a superhero flick. “I exercise for, like, an hour each day. My neighborhood has a bunch of hills, so it’s walking up hills. Then I alternate between walking and jogging. I hate jogging—you’re going in circles, but I recognize that it helps.”
Besides, she explains, even if she’s not loving the physicality of it all, those hours are essential for her mental well-being—something she only discovered via a happy accident.
“You know those earbuds that you put in your ears? I was running, and one fell. It was dark outside and I couldn’t find it. So I was forced to just be alone with my thoughts, and I was like, ‘Oh, I need to do this more often.’ Those moments are the most creative. I think finding those moments while also nurturing your body is important.”
It’s a lesson she is constantly relearning, reinforcing, and being reminded of by the black women mentors in her life. Casually, Issa mentions that she gets check-in calls from Debbie Allen and Ava DuVernay. “We, as black women, don’t take care of ourselves enough,” Issa recalls the Selma director telling her after she tried to laugh off a mysterious out-of-the-blue allergic reaction that left her face completely swollen. Issa wasn’t planning on going to the doctor unless it happened again.
DuVernay’s incredulous response of “Sis, if it happens again?! Are you kidding me?” was the kick she needed. That encouragement to make the time for herself and get to the doc was a crucial reminder.
Luckily, Issa was fine, and once the swelling went down (and she could see a computer screen again), it was back to work on the myriad of projects she has lined up for 2019. Up first: The Dolls, a limited-run series on HBO about the 1983 riots in small-town Arkansas that erupted over Cabbage Patch Kid dolls. In addition to writing the series (along with her Insecure collaborators, Amy Aniobi and Laura Kittrell), she’ll star with fellow HBO vet Laura Dern, who picked her out for the project when they were sitting together at the 2018 Golden Globes.
After that, she’ll tackle Love in America. The movie-musical, announced in late 2018, finds Issa teaming up with her producing partner Deniese Davis and Aniobi. Though Issa isn’t a huge fan of musicals (“I only like West Side Story and The Lion King”), hearing Davis’s pitch centered on people of color sealed the deal for her.
Throughout our conversation, Issa very pointedly highlights her collaborators (unsurprisingly, they are mostly women) and names like Aniobi’s and Davis’s repeat frequently.
Balancing new projects with existing commitments is nothing new for her, and in order to Do. It. All., she’ll rely on one major tenet of her work ethic dating back to her YouTube days.
“Find a good team. Find a good team.” Issa repeats the words like a mantra. “It matters.…It’s enabled me to not lose my mind.”
It stands out that she is unafraid to give credit where credit is due and is clearly confident enough not to be intimidated by others’ success—in fact, she encourages it. As a boss, she’s made sure to cultivate an environment in which her writing staff feel heard and consider themselves collaborators. With her team in place and her approach to wellness ever evolving, Issa’s future is looking bold, daring…and of course, secure.

Cedric the Entertainer
Tumblr media
Cedric Antonio Kyles (born April 24, 1964) better known by his stage name Cedric the Entertainer, is an American actor, stand-up comedian, and game show host. He hosted BET's ComicView during the 1993–94 season and Def Comedy Jam in 1995. He is best known for co-starring with Steve Harvey on The WB sitcom The Steve Harvey Show, as one of The Original Kings of Comedy, and for starring as Eddie Walker in Barbershop. He can also be seen starring on the CBS show “The Neighborhood”. He hosted the 12th season of the daytime version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire in 2013–14 and starred in the TV Land original series The Soul Man, which aired from 2012 until 2016. He has also done voice work for Ice Age, the Madagascar film series, Charlotte's Web and the Planes franchise. In 2019, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Early life
Cedric Antonio Kyles was born on April 24, 1964 in Jefferson City, Missouri, the son of Rosetta (née Boyce), a schoolteacher, and Kittrell Kyles, an employee of The Missouri Pacific Railroad. His only sibling is his younger sister, Sharita Kyles Wilson, a communications professor at Pepperdine University in Malibu, California.
Cedric was raised in Caruthersville, Missouri, but after junior high school he moved to Berkeley, Missouri. He is a graduate of Berkeley High School in St. Louis's northern suburbs.
Cedric earned a degree in communications from Southeast Missouri State University.
Career
In 1995, Cedric moved into acting, auditioning and receiving his first-ever role as The Cowardly Lion in the 1995 Apollo Theater Revival of The Wiz. He then expanded his career by aptly playing Steve Harvey's friend Cedric Jackie Robinson on the sitcom The Steve Harvey Show. He then began appearing in films, including Barbershop, Barbershop 2: Back in Business, Ride, Serving Sara, Johnson Family Vacation, Intolerable Cruelty, Man of the House, Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events, Madagascar, Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted and Be Cool. Cedric was the subject of controversy when his Barbershop character made unpopular remarks about Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks. While his acting career grew, Cedric continued stand-up and traveled the country as one of the Kings of Comedyheadliners, with Steve Harvey, D. L. Hughley and Bernie Mac. The act was later made into a film by Spike Lee, The Original Kings of Comedy. Cedric briefly had his own sketch comedy show, Cedric the Entertainer Presents, but it was canceled after one season. The show had been renewed for a second season, but Fox canceled it before the season began. He took time to pen his book, Grown-A$$ Man. He then appeared in the 2003 video game Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2004. His most recent HBO Comedy Special was Cedric The Entertainer: Taking You Higher. Two of the background dancers from the special were Kamilah Barrett and Sandra Colton, who were also finalists in Fox's So You Think You Can Dance. He also recorded comedic interludes on two multi-platinum selling albums, Nelly's Country Grammar (2000) and Jay-Z's The Black Album (2003).
In the 2007 comedy film Code Name: The Cleaner, Cedric plays Jake, a janitor with amnesia who may be a secret undercover government agent involved in an illegal arms conspiracy. He then starred in the 2008 films Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins and Street Kings.
Cedric appeared as the lead comedian at the White House Correspondents Dinner but jokingly remarked that he was unprepared because he thought that he would follow a humorous speech by President George W. Bush but instead followed First Lady Laura Bush, who said he was "hilarious" and "probably the funniest person" she had ever met.
Cedric has won many awards throughout his career beginning with early victories in winning $500 in the Johnny Walker National Comedy Contest in 1990 and coming in first place in the Miller Genuine Draft Comedy Contest in 1993. BET named him Richard Pryor Comic of the Year. He has also won four NAACP awards.
Cedric was inducted to the St. Louis Walk of Fame on June 7, 2008. His star is at 6166 Delmar.
Cedric was the special guest host for WWE Raw on September 21, 2009, in Little Rock, Arkansas. During the show, he participated in a wrestling match, defeating Chavo Guerrero by pinfall. The match also featured Santino Marella as a guest referee. Cedric also got help from an unknown wrestler dubbed The Sledge Hammer (played by Imani Lee) and Hornswoggle.
Cedric appeared in the Broadway revival of David Mamet's "American Buffalo," the story of three small-time crooks who come to blows during a plot to steal a valuable coin collection.
In a June 21, 2011 interview, Cedric confirmed that his latest reality game show, It's Worth What?, was going to air on July 12, 2011 on NBC, but the start date was delayed by one week to July 19. Starting in 2012, Cedric played the main character in the TV Land original series, The Soul Man, featuring Niecy Nash. The series ran for five seasons and ended in 2016.
Cedric was the host of the classic American TV show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire beginning with its 12th season in national syndication, which premiered on September 2, 2013. "With his deep roots as a legendary stand-up comedian and actor, Cedric will bring his fresh approach and unpredictable fun to the show," said Janice Marinelli, president, Disney-ABC Domestic Television. On April 30, 2014, Cedric announced that he was leaving Who Wants to Be a Millionaire after the 2013–14 season to focus on his busy schedule. Terry Crews took over as host on September 8, 2014.
Personal life
Cedric is married to Lorna Wells. They have two children, Croix (born 2000) and Lucky Rose (born 2003); Cedric also has a daughter Tiara from a previous relationship.
In May 2015, he was awarded the Honorary Doctorate Degree in Fine Arts and Humanities from Lincoln University of Missouri (his parents' alma mater). In 2018, St. Louis honored him by renaming the street in front of the Kappa Alpha Psi Alumni House as Cedric The Entertainer Way.In 2020, Cedric suggested that Bill Gates may have been responsible for causing the COVID-19 epidemic, based his interpretation of a video of Gates' 2015 TED Talk, where Gates actually warned of the risks of a global pandemic.
