CNN: Survivor found 'gasping for life' among bodies of 27 men dumped on Zambian roadside
CNN: Survivor found 'gasping for life' among bodies of 27 men dumped on Zambian roadside.
Zambia's police service says it is investigating the deaths of 27 men, all believed to be Ethiopian nationals, whose bodies were found on Sunday "dumped" by the roadside near the capital, Lusaka.
Police spokesman Danny Mwale said in a statement that a total of 28 victims were found abandoned along Chiminuka road in the Ngwerere area of Lusaka.
Only one of the men -- who were all aged between 20 and 38 years -- survived, Mwale said.
"Out of the 28 persons, one was found gasping for life," the police statement said, adding that the 27 bodies had been transferred to a Lusaka morgue "awaiting formal identification and postmortem."
The sole survivor was taken to a hospital for treatment, the police said.
Malawi police find more bodies near mass grave that contained 25 Ethiopians
Malawi police find more bodies near mass grave that contained 25 Ethiopians
Ethiopians are increasingly taking desperate measures to escape Africa's second most populous country, which has been in the grip of civil war for the past two years.
Some Ethiopian nationals are lured with promises of job opportunities in South Africa but end up being held in dire conditions, according to immigration officials cited by the Lusaka Times.
The latest discovery comes less than two months after police in neighboring Malawi found a mass grave that contained the remains of 25 Ethiopians in Malawi's northern Mzimba district.
Four more bodies of Ethiopian nationals were found "in a decomposed state" a day after, near the site of the mass grave in Mzimba, Malawi's police said at the time.
Just like Malawi, which has increasingly become a popular route for smuggling syndicates, Zambia has been described as both "a transit and destination country" for illegal migrants from the Horn of Africa who pass through the southern African country with the aim of reaching South Africa.
In July, Zambia's immigration officials intercepted more than 50 Ethiopians who were believed to have been smuggled into the country on their way to South Africa.

Only 6,900 epidemiologists serve 1.4 billion Africans — CDC
Tumblr media
The Director General of the Africa Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, Dr Jean Kaseya has said that only 6,900 field and frontline epidemiologists exist to serve the estimated 1.4 billion Africans. Kaseya who disclosed this while speaking with newsmen at the ongoing 2023 Conference on Public Health in Africa in Lusaka, Zambia, noted that Africa records at least two new outbreaks per week, totalling more than 100 outbreaks per year. According to him, 75 per cent of the outbreaks are zoonotic in origin and are worsened by climate change. Epidemiologists investigate the patterns, causes and effects of diseases in groups of people. They investigate the source of outbreaks of disease, how they are transmitted and how to stop and prevent further outbreaks. According to Worldometre, the current population of Africa is 1,474,406,856 as of Monday, November 27, 2023, based on the latest United Nations estimates. “As I speak, we have 18 countries affected by cholera with more than 4,000 deaths. We have multiple West African countries affected by dengue. The flooding in several countries including Libya, the earthquake in Morocco and several other natural disasters are showing the linkage of climate change and health in Africa. “According to the Africa Development Bank, the continent loses 5-15 per cent of its GDP annually due to the impacts of climate change. “Therefore, Africa CDC is committed to supporting African countries to adopt a comprehensive One-health approach to tackle these climate-related challenges,” Kaseya said. The Africa CDC boss noted that less than 10 per cent of African countries can respond to a major outbreak with a skilled health workforce. “Africa requires 6,000 field epidemiologists, yet, we currently only have 1,900. Additionally, the continent needs 25,000 frontline epidemiologists, but we presently have just 5,000. “Africa CDC has introduced numerous programs and initiatives, such as Africa Volunteers Health Corps, Kofi Annan, and the Field Epidemiology Training Program, to bridge this gap. The excessive dependence on imports for essential healthcare products is also a matter of grave concern. “Less than one per cent of vaccines, five per cent of diagnostics and 30 per cent of therapeutics used in Africa are currently manufactured in Africa. This imbalance underscores the urgent need to strengthen our medical manufacturing capabilities to enhance self-reliance and reduce vulnerability to supply disruptions,” he added. He, however, stressed that the Africa CDC is advocating for an ambitious agenda that aims to ensure that by 2040, a minimum of 60 per cent of vaccines and medicines used in Africa are manufactured within the continent. “As I have to say it, local manufacturing is the second independence of Africa, because it will mitigate our reliance on external sources, build our health security, promote local innovation, and lead to job creation, economic growth, peace and security,” he added. After arriving at Entebbe international airport at 10pm we had a long wait for the flight, which departed at 2.45, or ridiculous o’clock as I like to call these times. Why on earth anyone would want to serve curry for “dinner” at such an hour is beyond me and for essentially a 2 hour flight. If that was bad, then the 5 hours spent trying to curl up and sleep on an airport chair wasn’t great. It didn’t so much happen, roll on another 4 hour flight to Lusaka and I gave up trying and delved into a couple of movies. Tag and The House with Clocks in the Wall. I was disappointed I couldn’t finish that before the plane landed.
Farewells were fleeting as my travelling compadre took a different exit for his connecting flight to SA and I was finally through “no man’s” land and into Lusaka arrivals. Three cases, a satchel and a rucksack. Enough shoes dear? Not quite! More like a heavy, but small easel and copious tubes of oils. How could I not?
The only thing I need to source is canvas and gesso. Thank god I didn’t pack them too after the copious baggage charges. I’m eager to start some new work, but I’m not going to force the issue, it will flow when I’m ready, that much I’ve learnt.
I indulged in one of my favourite concessions whilst I waited for my lift and the kind porter who kept check of my luggage as I went to buy a new SIM card, returned at points to make sure I was ok. Red cappuccino, or Redbush (May be more familiar) made into cappuccino…it’s the best, especially with a dash of honey!
Finally I was found by Kosamu, Gwabi’s driver. He was having vehicle repairs done and running various errands for the lodge. He didn’t remember me from the last time, but a lot of them do. It’s lovely, it’s like coming home to a big family and that’s in no way dismissing mine. It’s just like a little hub of loveliness. It was around 2.5-3 hours on the road to the river, the skies darkened quickly as we drove through a small downpour. Probably needed as the rains in Zambia haven’t been very substantial this year.
I arrived around 7.30, via the little village of Chirundu; only it wasn’t the Chirundu I’m used to. Street light, malls, a shoprite, Hungry Lion, neon flashing signs. It wasn’t quite Vegas, but for Chirundu and especially by night, it was looking quite different.
The last time I was here, the novelty was a small ice cream shop amidst the market stalls. Apparently that still remains and no doubt I will see it by day at some point. Another thing that startled me, was the amount of casinos that have popped up. It has a correlation with the development of resurfaced roads.
I struck it lucky in that I was given a late supper when I arrived. We had a brief catch up of the events over the last few years and one by one people dispersed. Once again I was somehow last man standing after a very interesting conversation with Troy who runs Mombashi safari camp. Some 116kms down stream.
I remember him from last time and for the story he told me of not being able to leave his house for two days, due to a leopard camping out on his doorstep. We cover a whole range of subjects from conservation to the latest croc attacks. Rule of thumb established is, stay away from the water. Even at the waters edge, they can grab you from nowhere. There is a rather large one at the watering hole in between camps. I went today to try and catch a glimpse, from a good distance I hasten to add and even despite that distance, I felt tentative. You don’t mess with these ruthless feckers. That said, I still can’t see them farmed for their meat or skin. If anything, you have to have a slight admiration for these toothy survival specialists.
Sleep was deep and I struggled to get going in the morning. I woke shaking. Probably a combination of fatigue and dehydration, never a good mix. I started with a walk around the grounds and camp which led to the ascent of a rugged steep hill, eventually I cut off taking a path through some bushveld, then back down the main track to the lodge. I came across the baby duiker Pombo, who despite never having met, ran up to me to check me out and no doubt, whether I came baring food.
As I video call my mum later, she happens to be with my sister and her family. I do a quick tour of the lodge and views, then go off to see if I can find Pombo. Perfectly timed, he comes racing towards me. It’s nice to be able to show my family these sights and what Africa has. I wish I could share more closely, real time, what it’s all about. My three year old niece loves animals and if I can assist in bringing that love out further, by introducing new animals, especially in the wild, then all is good. Connection is the first part of caring and thereafter if you care, you will protect. We all need protecting sometimes, but we need to instill in the next generation the mindset of a carer and protector in order to preserve what we have around us. Knowledge, understanding and appreciation of sentience.
I’ve been given the job of feeding the hatchery. We have four what we suspect are tiny blue waxbills and three older guineafowl chicks. The story goes that they were rescued from a roadside vendor selling them at 2 kwatcha per chick, around 13p. It still happens, it’s not right and if they could be confiscated without payment, to break the normality of selling animals like that, it would be ideal; however this is something Africa has yet to deal with.
The waxbills need feeding a formula every couple of hours and one of the guinea fowl unfortunately has a lame leg. I’ve been trying to gently get it moving again with gentle manipulation. I call him poppet for now, as that seems to be how I address him, possibly her. I guess it’s a relatively gender neutral term of affection…. I haven’t seen my owl friend yet, but I’m hoping he’ll pop by soon!
As the sunset on the evening and the river reflected the colours of the sky, I knew I’d made the right decision to come back out here. I’ve an new open book, with blank pages to be filled. As my questions are answered and as I live out my life, the pages will fill and the book will flow.
Anyway, I somehow agreed to go running in the morning at 0530, so maybe I’d best put the lights out!

Zambia cops fee MP with hate speech for Indian jibe
Authorities in Zambia charged a prominent ruling party MP, Chishimba Kambwili, with hate speech on Monday for allegedly telling an ethnic Indian worker he was stealing local jobs.
Kambwili, a fierce critic of President Edgar Lungu, allegedly told an Indian-origin road worker that his occupation should be reserved for indigenous Zambians.
A clip purporting to show the incident went viral on social media last week, prompting the government to issue a rebuke.
Kambwili, 49, attended Lusaka central police station on Monday, supported by opposition leaders including United Party for National Development (UPND) leader Hakainde Hichilema.
Kambwili’s supporters chanted anti-government songs denouncing official corruption.
“Police in Lusaka have arrested and charged Chishimba Kambwili with expression or showing hatred, ridicule or contempt for persons because of race, tribe or place of origin,” said police spokesperson Esther Katongo in a statement.
Kambwili, who was briefly minister of information and broadcasting, was denied bail and is expected to appear in court on Tuesday.
Lungu has been accused of using the legal process to suppress his critics. In 2017, Hichilema was arrested and charged with treason after his motorcade apparently failed to stop for the president’s own road convoy.
Hichilema said the denial of bail demonstrated what he called Lungu’s authoritarian instincts.
“We as Zambians must know that we have a tyrant in office. Leadership of tyrants have not stayed in power for too long. Don’t be afraid as Zambians and let us unify to remove these tyrants,” he said.
“Kambwili is not a flight risk and the police should have accorded him bond (bail). This thing should come to an end and as Zambians we have to unite,” Elias Chipimo, another opposition leader, told journalists.
If convicted Kambwili faces up to two years’ jail.
