Spotted lanternfly
Hated by farmers, these little bugs are invasive planthoppers that came in a shipment from China in the 2012. Now they are everywhere. This one right here, was very photogenic.

if wasps are in your house please get your walls checked! look around outside and see if theres anywhere they could be getting in, you can also buy a heat gun as wasps will generate alot of hear, or just listen! they can cause alot of damage to your house (highly recommend checking out the hornet king on yt for what wasp nest removal can look like)
yeah that's on my parents cause I'm a cool mid 20s adult who still lives with their parents lmao, and I've told them about it. They've been nesting in the front door frame for like... 3 years now? And they're definitely eating away the wall inside but there's not much I can do about it myself since it's not my house. I'm obsessed with wasp removal videos though, I love the guy that feeds the comb and larva to his chickens
but I've mainly just been noticing them outside a ton, they just happen to get into the house when people go in and out of the back door cause there's wood structures out back they like to chew on. my main issue has been with the giant invasive european hornet that got into the fireplace, it was safely behind glass but I'm not thrilled at the idea of them having made it to my area

hii sorry to randomly come in asks like this i didnt know who to talk to about this.
Recently ive seen a bunch of content from americans about spotted lanterflies and maybe its just me but it seems a lot like huh. Like people are just jumping at the opportunity to have a valid reason to violently kill an insect? like yes it's invasive and from what i've seen, really destructive, but it just feels like all bug hating people jumped on the ship of killing them just for cruelty's sake :/ idk it's just vibes and feelings but i wondered if anyone else felt the same way.
I have definitely seen people be very gleeful about it, which I personally find pretty distasteful. Not to mention telling random people (who cannot accurately ID most bugs to start with) to kill them is not going to stop their spread.

I am glad you love these little guys. this is not meant to crush your joy in any way, but I do want to ask. Does that mean the lanternfly that Jumped Into My Face (actually happened) did it simply out of Sillybrain and NOT out of a Lack of Honor and Reverence for Battle?
spotted lanternflies are exceedingly dumb even for lanterflies they bump into everything and are really bad at moving. they have no idea what violence is, being built only to Drink

Bugblr, I have a question
And maybe it's stupid.
I live in the US, and Chinese mantids (Tenodera sinensis) are fairly common in my neck of the woods. They are not, however, native. These little guys are some of my favorite bugs. I love them and it makes me so excited when I see one. So needless to say when I found out there were people who killed these matids on sight because they're invasive, it really unsettled me.
I've always been under the impression that while they're not native, Chinese mantids have pretty well entrenched themselves into the ecosystem at this point. (Sort of like some of our songbirds, I think.)
So my question is this: Would killing Chinese mantids you find in the wild help them? Am I wrong to be unsettled by this, especially when I support the kill-on-sight policies northern states have regarding lanterflies?
You guys know a hell of a lot more than me, which is why I'm asking.

Btw if u live in a area w spotted lanterflies jsyk if u get an empty water bottle or similar u can very easily capture a bunch of them by putting the hole of the bottle over them. They instinctively will jump into the bottle. If not u can gently scoop them inside with the edge of the hole. U can then crush them inside the bottle, or do whatever u wanna do with them. Be careful tho, they can jump out of the bottle as it gets more filled up. Good to keep a cap or if u can handle touching bugs plugging the hole w ur finger

spotted cat-toy fly
Spotted lanterflies are designed like they were meant to be cat toys.
1. walks slowly 2. unless touched (with curious paw) then they jump colorfully catching the cat's attention. 3. resume walking until in immediate danger again.
Pica always finds one when we take her out on the roof, and she has so much fun chasing and batting at them.
Why do they flash colors when they jump? seems a little... maladaptive?
Anyway here is a video I made about the lanterflies invading NYC:

I try to be such a copacetic and sweet person so much that getting to absolutely destroy lanterflies really livens me. It’s the same instinct I use to play barbarians but instead of pretend it’s REAL and I get to do VIOLENCE and it’s a GOOD and HONORABLE thing

Hi! If you're in America and you see a spotted lanterfly, please kill it. Just murder it. Don't even feel bad.
