i firmly believe the reason mest's writing took such a turn for the worse in the alvarez arc is mashima's addiction to fanservice.

not like, the "oh wow big booby" kind of fanservice, but the thing mashima does where he writes things into the story almost exclusively to please mainstream ft fans. he includes well-liked jokes, he highlights the characters everyone likes, he makes popular ships canon. he's really good at seeing what his audience likes and working with that, and he does it to the point that it actively makes the writing of the series worse. (ex: gray and juvia)

during and before the tartaros arc, there seemed to be a genuine effort put into making mest at least somewhat sympathetic. we're supposed to enjoy watching him work through his trauma from loosing fairy tail. we're supposed to enjoy his interactions with lahar. but when mashima revealed the twist that he was actually part of fairy tail, everyone understandably hated the twist (and by extension, mest) so much that mashima saw how determined the fandom was to hate him. so he just went "ok :). here he is being a creep and stabbing people for no good reason. here is your hate sink!" mashima just essentially gave up on putting effort into writing mest as a likable character because he realized how much everyone liked hating him.

the doranbolt of the tartaros arc would not have attacked august for no given reason. he would have done the same thing, there would have been emotional weight behind it. mashima would have written him to be motivated by underlying trauma instead of cookie-cutter "i want to protect the guild" bullshit. but mest in the alvarez arc is blandly doing bad shit just for the sake of it because that's really just what people want.

How Does Lahar Deal With His Crush?

When Lahar first catches feelings, he’s actually not quite aware of it... He tries to rationalize why he likes to spend time with this person more or feels more protective of them. He’ll run circles around the realization that he is falling in love with them for quite a long time until finally it just clicks in his head and he’s like “... Oh.” 

After he realizes that he is in love with someone, he gets very flustered very easily! This person is a radiant sun in his eyes, and he feels that he’ll be blinded if he gets too close. However, he also feels the overwhelming need to be close to his crush. He’ll seek them out in slow hours of the workday, or stay close to their side during missions, especially if it’s a dangerous one. 

Lahar doesn’t feel self-conscious about himself in any way; he’s going to take his time preening his feathers, but this bird isn’t going to simmer on his feelings and let someone else catch the worm! 

He’s a meticulous sort and will practice his confession religiously in his head until he feels it can just smoothly roll off of his tongue. Doesn’t help him much, though, as when he finally gets his crush alone, he freezes. He’ll grow pink-faced and embarrassed at his failure, but finally manages to squeak out some semblance of “Would you like to go to dinner?” He’s so endearing when he’s flustered, so who could say no?

Lahar is no skimp; he’s taking the object of his affections to only the highest-rated restaurant and securing the absolute best seat in the house. What’s the point of having a high government position if he won’t use it? Immaculate wine, immaculate food, immaculate ambiance... It’s enough to make everybody swoon! After a lovely dinner exchanging all the necessary pleasantries, Lahar will reach across the table to gently grasp his crush’s hands, with a faint dust of pink on his cheeks as he finally voices exactly what he’s feeling. He’s sure got a way with words, and the honest things he says about his crush is sure to have them toppling head-over-heels!

Honestly I feel so bad for most of the Dreyars. Yuri, who worked so hard. His wife, who never got to meet her son. Makarov, who always does his best but still failed somewhere with Ivan and failed a little less either Laxus, but never stopped trying regardless. Laxus, who just wanted to have his family, biological and chosen, be strong and united.

Not Ivan though. I don't know what the fuck went wrong with him.

Mount Rainier Dominating the skyline of Seattle stands the highest peak (4392 m/14411 ft) in the Cascade Mountain Range, Mount Rainier. Along with other notable volcanoes in the Cascades, Mount Rainier formed as a result of subduction along the Cascadia subduction zone, where melting and crustal contamination generates a high silica, high water content magma. This magma composition presents at the surface in a very particular way; large stratovolcanoes with the potential for large, explosive eruptions.

Located on the leading edge of the Cascades, Mount Rainier is located just 87 km/54 miles to the south-east of Seattle. Parts of the city of 634,535 people, as well as the city of Tacoma (202,010 people) and surrounding towns are built on ash and lahar deposits from Rainier. Along with the 20 or so major stratovolcanoes in the Cascade Arc, Rainier is capable of large, explosive eruptions similar to that of Mount St Helens in 1980. The geologic record shows that continuous eruptions have been occurring at Rainier for 500,000 years, fluctuating between periods of higher and lower eruption rates (We are in the latter). The eruptions themselves however, are not the only, nor the biggest threat the volcano poses. The mountain is home to 26 major glaciers which feed several rivers (Cowlitz, Nisqually, Puyallup, Carbon and White) that during an eruption would be vulnerable to lahars created by the sudden release of glacial meltwater. The USGS estimates that 150,000 people live on top of past lahar deposits from Rainier, including areas of Seattle and nearby Tacoma. Hydrothermal alteration on the mountain is also of concern. A mixture of magmatic fluids, hydrothermal fluids, and steam have acted to chemically alter the volcanic rocks, making them weaker in the process. Widespread alteration on the steep sided flanks of Rainier makes them vulnerable to collapse, a process evident in the geological record. Approximately 5,600 years ago, 2-3 km^3 of mostly altered material from the summit and N-E flank detached from the mountain, creating a lahar that reached as far as the Puget Sound. This event, known as the Osceola Mudflow, created a horseshoe shaped crater not unlike that created after Mt St Helens erupted, which has since refilled with later lavas. Most of the heavily altered rock from the volcano was removed in this event, but some does remain on the upper west flank and presents a collapse hazard. These flank failure events can prove particularly hazardous as they do not necessarily require volcanic or seismic activity to occur; instead failing due to their own structural weakness. There are no current signs of renewed activity at Mount Rainier, which is heavily monitored for any activity that suggests the contrary. Rainier has not had a major eruption in recent times, but its eventual awakening will no doubt make headline news worldwide. Evaluation, Proposed Solution and Current Status of the Crater Lake Breakout Problem, Mount Pinatubo, Philippines

Abstract

Rapid rise of Mount Pinatubo's crater lake and recent geological assessments of the crater's lowest point, the Maraunot Notch, raised concern about a breakout lahar down the northwestern slope of the volcano. Three factors indicated a serious hazard. First, the lake rose about 50 m from May 98-August 2001 and was expected to overtop the Maraunot Notch within the last trimester 2001. Overtopping might well have occurred at the height of a strong typhoon or under heavy monsoonal rainstorms. Second, the uppermost 10-20 m of 'dam' was erodible ash and poorly indurated coarse breccia, susceptible to failure by overtopping and erosion as at many landslide and other natural dams. Third, the volumes of lake discharge corresponding to 10 and 20 m of erosion would have been 28 and 55 million m3; peak discharges at a breach could have been as high as 3,200 m3/sec to 11,000 m3/sec, respectively. These discharges would have eroded 1991 pyroclastic and lahar material on the volcano's slopes, increased the flow volume by 3-6x, and entered the Bucao River as a large-magnitude lahar. The Municipality of Botolan (pop. ca. 40,000) lies on the delta of the Bucao River valley some 40 km downriver from the notch, and could have been at great risk. Given this potential risk, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) in early August 2001 advocated three actions. (1) An intentional breaching of the Maraunot Notch by the construction of a spillway or canal, by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH). Early breaching would limit further rise of the lake and thus reduce the magnitude of potential flood. Also, breaching would be scheduled during good weather to eliminate the danger of overtopping at an unknown time and/or under typhoon/rainstorm conditions. (2) An information campaign in Botolan in order to educate and prepare residents for breaching. (3) Evacuation of people at risk, one day before the scheduled breaching. A spillway was excavated by as many as 70 men with picks and shovels, and the specter of a wholly uncontrolled breach through the most erodible debris was averted. Early flow through the spillway was gentle and evacuees quickly returned home. However, 10-15 m of poorly indurated breccia still remains, lake level is still rising slowly, and we are watching to see whether outflow after heavy rains will armor the spillway or catastrophically erode the remaining dam. Insufficient communication between scientists and engineers led DPWH to design for less scouring than expected by PHIVOLCS, and politics and liability concerns at several levels halted digging before the trench could be deepened and outflow increased. Perhaps this is just as well. An inherent conflict arose between short- and long-term risk mitigation. Short-term risk was minimized; long-term risk was reduced but remains a concern.
