naruto's father was said to be a great man.

the fourth hokage was untouchable, they say. he was kind, strong and inhumanly fast.

namikaze minato is almost never referred to by his name. only by his moniker.

or at times by his association with the nine-tailed beast in the dark of night.

naruto doesn't care. minato is a ghost story, an icon more than the father who sealed half of the worst demon in history in his belly and died. a piece of shit haunting naruto's life and ruining the little things that make him happy.

one good thing about being the second most-hated person in konoha is that few have the guts to speak well about his father when naruto exists as a sore thumb.

he's not happy, but the usual anger over his dead father is not overpowering.

however, on the days he meets his mother, he wishes namikaze minato didn't die.

"you're looking so handsome," kushina croons. she moves her hands, her chains rattling around her. "just like your father. "

seeing his mother locked inside the hokage tower and guarded day and night by anbu is not a good experience, but naruto tries to make the best out of the situation.

"i have your eyes and smile, dattebayo!" he ignores his mother's sad eyes. "when i'll become the hokage one day, i'll get portraits of us in the lobby so that people look and say 'these two are identical!'"

don't talk about dad. please, don't talk about dad.

and naruto's mother might love him and support his delusions, but the one thing they can never agree on is his father.

"naruto..."

he turns away, shrugging off kushina's beseeching looks.

because what kind of hokage locks up people like this? what kind of husband dies and leaves his wife and child in this hell? what kind of man puts a village filled with people who hate above the people he claimed to love?

there will be no reprieve for naruto and kushina, no matter how much the third hokage punishes people for speaking ill. the uzumakis are devils and a village that adores the man who punished them for existing is not much of a village anyway.

when he'll be a hokage, he will end this. he will show them what real hatred looks like.

"come on, give me a hug now. today's your birthday after all." kushina extends her arms despite an anbu's protests. naruto jumps up and encircles his hands around her neck.

nestled in his mother's warmth, naruto feels the will of fire everyone boasts about.

yes. one day, they will be free and everyone else will see.
