With apologies to Kurt Andersen and Random House, an extended excerpt:
“’Left-of-Center Americans let themselves get played for too long by the economic right.’”
Tumblr media
“Permit me to repeat: forty years ago in a Wall Street Journal column, the pioneering modern right-wing intellectual announced a main part of that cynical plan, presenting it as a defining fuck-you-chumps feature of the conservatives’ new approach: if tax cuts for the rich and big business ‘leave us with a fiscal problem,’ Irving Kristol wrote, again with a smile, mammoth government debt is fine, because from now on ‘the neoconservative’ would force‘his opponents to tidy up afterwards.’”
Tumblr media
Irving Kristol, 1976 via The Guardian.
“Ever since, the liberals’ political role on economics and deficits...[has been working] to prove that they are responsible grown-ups...conservative the way conservatives used to be.  As college-educated professionals became a more and more important Democratic constituency, the general reluctance on  the left to try anything too crazy also grew...the left learned the lesson too well, and by the ‘90s it became a very bad habit...
In the spring of 2020 we urgently increased the total federal debt by 13 percent.  Watch: if Democrats get more power in Washington anytime soon, there well be a new Republican outbreak of mock fiscal panic and insistence on restraint--hysterical in both senses, overwrought as well as darkly funny.  It’s past time to resist that trap... Knee-jerk centrism, splitting the difference from the get-go between themselves and the official right, with the goal of upsetting nobody very much, has been a terrible Democratic reflex on economics...” [emphasis added].
This was published in 2020, before the elections of that year.  Now, in 2023, that “mock fiscal panic and insistence on restraint” however hysterical in any sense seems to be quite true.  Very prescient, Mr. Andersen.
Evil Geniuses: The Unmaking of America - A Recent History by Kurt Andersen; Random House, New York, NY; 2020.  Pgs 356-357.
One of the books I’d put on my essential history reading list.

Cyberpunk 2079: Chorus
Dorian Bautista (2079)
Dorian has new friends. Don't worry, they don't bite... much.
Girl with the green hair is a generic Barghest grunt, but I love her look so I'm giving her a whole name and backstory.
Tarryn Arias is a former member of BARGHEST.
When Kurt Hansen died, she and a small retinue of BARGHEST soldiers found issue with Bennett's leadership and left the organisation. For a time, they operated in the Badlands, 'draining the swamp' (read: flatlining Raffens) and stealing supplies from Militech convoys.
Then they met Dorian Bautista and his netrunner ally, Kaylee Andersen. Bautista told Tarryn about a malevolent scheme called Carpe Noctem, a scheme by Militech and Night Corp to covertly steal Night City and destroy what little freedom Night Citizens have left. All Dorian had to tell Tarryn was 'corpo plot' and she and her crew were aboard with his scheme to wage war with Night Corp.
Alone, they don't have much of a chance, however, Dorian and Kaylee have a secret weapon, an abandoned Militech project that will be as destructive to the powers that be as any nuclear warhead.

Here's an acoustic (unedited board tape) "coffee house version" I did of his evergreen song "What's Goin' On." HB Marvin, and hopefully you found peace beyond your mortal coil.

ACCUMULATED TYPINGS
These are people/characters (other than the 200 people from my dreams), who I've typed personally, or I've seen typed somewhere else, and I agree with the typing. To agree with a typing, the person had to type the same using my methodology as outlined in my Typing In Practice Posts.
If I actually know, or can be fairly certain of, a person's DISC and SOJT type, I will put it after their name in parenthesis. If there's a Typing In Practice post for this person, the number will also appear after their name in parenthesis

Note
for the book asks! i'm curious about 1, 2 and 10 ✨
my beloved mutual!!
1) Neil Gaiman’s American Gods, for sure. He’s the weird goth writer that made me into a weird goth writer. Everything I create is his fault. (Also on my most reread is Fangs by Sarah Andersen, depending on how you wanna categorize comics + graphic novels with books)
2) American Gods (surprising, I know), Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut, Alice Isn’t Dead by Joseph Fink, The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller, and The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern! These are in no particular order, really, but I WILL say that Alice Isn’t Dead was an INSTANT favorite. I love Joseph Fink’s style! He’s also one of the authors I accidentally have an autographed book from (the other being Gail Carriger!)
10) I don’t think I have one! I guess as a genre, romance? I don’t read novels that are strictly romance, it’s more that there are important romantic plots in a lot of the stuff I like, but the majority of the book will fall under fantasy, etc. I don’t consider myself to be someone who reads a lot of romance, but if you look at my storygraph apparently that is an AGGRESSIVE LIE. (I mentioned Gail Carriger- NO ONE is doing it like her. I think the Parasol Protectorate books are what made me go “Oh, oh, oh no, I am not immune to supernatural romance.”)

History and Journalism
In journalism there is a saying that sometimes a story is too good to fact check, a story that is too good to bog down with tedious factchecking that would undermine the narrative and are less interesting to readers.  A perfect example is the report by Martin Gansberg on the murder of Kitty Genovese, titled “37 Who Saw Murder Didn’t Call Police,” and led to the psychological phrase “The Bystander Effect,” but unreported at the time was that there were people who did indeed call the police.  So as more journalists move into the historic profession, from writing books like War on Peace, to podcasts like Bag Man by journalist Rachel Maddow from MSNBC, it is important to remain skeptical of their findings no matter how entertaining or accurate they may be.  With journalism not only is there a difference in methodology and approach to research, but their work has also been codified into a consumer product, designed to entrance their audience into either purchasing their newspapers, their magazines, or tune in to their TV and radio news broadcasts.  The news with the largest outreach, not the most accurate, are then the ones rewarded with the most advertising dollars.
History by historians on the other hand, is more academically rigorous, and peer reviewed.  Instead of being strained by viewership, ad revenue, and corporate interest, most historians work in academia, museums, even the books most historians published are from various University Presses.  This not meant to pin historians and journalists against each other, nor is this a strict critique on the institution of journalism.  Afterall, Slate Magazine managed to create a thorough deep dive into the Richard Nixon Watergate scandal with their podcast Slow Burn.  But to get audiences enticed to listening they started their journey with Martha Mitchell, the wife of the United States Attorney General John N. Mitchell and was known as a frequent gossiper to the press to the point of ridicule on Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In, a hilarious story designed to pull more viewers than to simply inform them of a subject.  But that levity and personal touch is needed to lure the masses to comprehend complex subjects.  After all, if you search YouTube for a video explaining how SLAPP lawsuits work the first result is from HBO’s news satire program Last Week Tonight, the video also has the most views on the subject with 22 million while most of the others have not even break a million.
But historians have also participated in creating podcasts that are both entertaining and informative, the most notable that you should check out and listen for yourself is Nixon at War the podcast hosted by novelist and historian Kurt Andersen and published by the Public Radio Exchange, PRX, the focus was shifted away from the sensational Watergate scandal like most journalists tend to favor and instead focused on President Nixon’s experience with the Vietnam War.  The success led to the spiritual sequel LBJ’s War about Nixon’s predecessor Lyndon B. Johnson and his tenure over the Vietnam War, beginning with Johnson’s friendship with Vietnam President Diem.  However instead of historian Kurt Andersen LBJ’s War was hosted by journalist for The Texas Standard David D. Brown. Perhaps if we historians want to have our work viewed by the public sector then we must also have a voice for radio, some of us certainly have the voice for it.

The 1920s to the 2020s was kind of the century of the magazine. Today, the industry is in more of a dusk, a slow dusk, and we're closer to sunset.
