Watching a documentary about the Gurkhas. Man earned his Victoria Cross by, in Burma against the Japs, and after all his comrads we're killed around him, took up a Bren gun, advanced firing from the hip 30 yards under machine gun and rifle fire toward a bunker. Killed two Japs with the Bren, three with his kukri, then took up a flame thrower and wiped out THIRTY more Japs!!! All he had to say when relief arrived was, "fitting recompense for my comrades." Wow!!

When I was a kid I fell in love with swords, knives, and every other "cold weapon" imaginable. The allure of swords in particular has directed my interests for years, and I always assumed that getting my hands on antique weapons would be completely out of my tax bracket.
So imagine my surprise a number of years back when I started purchasing antique swords and knives and discovered that many of them are quite affordable, especially short bladed weapons like the kukri seen here.
The kukri is a knife known to basically anyone who's interested in arms and armor. The quintessential Nepalese fighting knife driven to fame (or infamy) by the Gurkhas, the kukri is a beast in hand. If you're more used to the weight and balance of a tanto or other large knives, there's a brief moment of readjustment, but for someone like me who prefers chunky, blade-heavy weapons, the kukri is the perfect fighting knife.

House Martell, the Sun & Spear of Dorne
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"You may burn us, my lady ... but you will not bend us, break us, or make us bow. This is Dorne. You are not wanted here. Return at your peril."
Some banner bearers of House Martell. I like doing some rank and file every now and again, I can't quite make myself paint whole armies, but a bit of heraldry can't go amiss.
As you can see, my theme for the Dornish is orange, orange, and more... red and yellow, which make orange! With the darker skin tones and copper metallics, this can all get a bit samey, so I love that pop of turquoise on the fella on the right. As well as just being a nice colour contrast, it fits with Dorne's overall vibe of little oases in the desert.
I also feel like there are 3 levels of understanding Westeros: Westeros as Europe, in which case Dorne is Moorish Spain; Dorne as the UK, in which case the Dornish are, shockingly enough, the Cornish; finally, there's the most important thematic level, where George draws on what he knows - the USA. This is the level where the Vale is WASP-y New England, the Riverlands are Southern Gothic, and Dorne is the Southwest - deserts, racial tensions, and chili peppers and huevos rancheros. Which is all an elaborate way of saying - if you're in the Southwest, you gotsta have your turquoise.

Do we even explicitly learn when Jonathan's got the kukri or can I headcanon that his father was a Gurkha in the British Indian army but died in action
Some have assumed Van Helsing handed it out during the boys' anti-vampire dress-up montage, but seeing as Jonathan is the only one mentioned as swinging a kukri around, I'm more inclined to believe he got vampire hunter extra credit by bringing his own weapon to the party.
Maybe it was inherited! Maybe he picked it up Specifically For Dracula Purposes! Stoker left that thread dangling with so many others, so feel free to imagine 🔪❤

The sword of the day is the kukri.
Tumblr media
This knife comes from Nepal, though it has become surprisingly widespread and popular. First recorded in the 7th century and notably used by Gurkha soldiers, it is not solely a combat knife, but also used for bushwork, hunting, and woodworking. There are several different styles of kukri, in a variety of lengths and thicknesses, but all feature the distinctive forward-swept blade and thick belly that lend this knife a tremendous amount of chopping power.
