okay i ADORE this pre release, it actually showcased all of their vocal skills so so well (wish there was a bit in the chorus for jeongyeon though!! the teaser made it seem like she'd have a main singing role) and i actually thought of some twice lore...

in dance the night away, they start the mv washed up on the shore of an island, probably after a shipwreck. what if this video shows them before and after the shipwreck, living on the island?? kinda like a whole parallel universe thing? like they made it together for this long? not sure if any of that made sense ahaha just my thoughts!!

XDINARY HEROES 'HELLO, WORLD!' REVIEW

I said a while ago that once xdinary heroes were let out of the jyp dungeon they would save kpop and i was fucking right.

TEST ME - this feels like a cleaner, more streamlined happy death day, and i love it to death (ha). It's fun, confident and confrontational and shows how much potential these boys have. The music video was also hilarious. (writing credits from jungsu, jun han and o.de)

KNOCK DOWN - grooooovy indeed. the vibes are immaculate from this one. I feel like in the industry right now its some right of passage to have at least one antidrop in an album, but i really dont guve a fuck this song is so cool and shows their potential beyond punk rock unison shouting. (written by jungsu and gaon, the talent is apparent)

SUCKER PUNCH - i was so excited for this one and i was not dissapointed. This is what i want from xh, and you can really tell they're having fun with the vocals and the instrumentation. This song masterfully keeps you on your toes to the point where you have no idea what to expect and when the beat drops you just get caught off guard (like being hit with a sucker punch wow) - a feat i thought in todays music scene to be impossible. This is such a fun song, and I love that this spong was written by o.de, jun han and jooyeon.

STRAWBERRY CAKE - had no idea what to expect because of the title but OH MY GOD WHEN THE CHORUS HITS. The AC/DC influence is clear with the high pitched vocals, but the beat remains unique to xdinary heroes. I FUCKING LOVE PUNK ROCK. (shout out to gunil, jungsu and gaon for writing this one its flawless)

PIRATES - THIS SONG IS AMAZING I CAN'T BREATHE. the raw piano at the beginning is amazing, and the whole song is giving euphoria????? like it sounds like 'mount everest' by labrinth in the best way. I'm so glad they didn't fall victim to the end of the album ballad for no reason curse, this song is chiller than the others but it's so in place. (written by jun han, o.de and jooyeon)

I was going to do a ranking for this album like I normally do for these reviews, but i genuinely can't pick a favourite i love all the songs so much. This may be the best kpop mini album i've ever heard. I'm not kidding stream this MASTERPIECE right now.

I am just blown away by this song, this music video, by this group. Seriously, if you don't know P1HARMONY yet, you need to hear some of their work. They are so underrated! I stumbled upon them last year and they have quickly become one of my favorite groups.

How is Kai new album for you? I think he really established himself as an artist, he created his own style. Even tho I think the MV was quite random with cowboy (?) outfits, the ballet theme could be pushed more but I think the scene where he is wearing babushka scarf, glasses and doing body rolles half-naked while gazing straight at babushka cashier is top notch!!😅 i heard there will be more films/mvs for this album, can’t wait. SM overall are really good with visual production. Tho I saw already some controversies on Reddit that people seems to not like that title track wasnt original written for Kai but for some European artist…I don’t know how to feel about that, I think he still sang better than original but I find it a little strange that he named whole album about himself over the song that was written for someone else with different idea in mind about Mr.Rover. Maybe I wouldn’t be so skeptical if it was just b-side and not the main track and the name of whole album idk 😅 Kai still did great job with Say you love me and Slidding, my favs on album

Hello Kai Anon...! Ah, look at this photo. How can we not like Rover when the concept is bringing us glitter baby angel raver Kai?

It's true that the title track was originally a Bulgarian pop song. It seems SM bought it and repurposed it. One of the criticisms of Kpop lies exactly in this — a lack of authenticity in artistry. But, I think if we reframe things there's more at play than the merit of original songwriting, and there is ample authenticity shining through.

Is it slightly weird that they went for a song that was so easily found and so unchanged in its final form (in a way)? Yes. But can we say that the original concept and performance are similar Kai's? I'm not too sure about that.

The MV is a little messy in its narrative, but we have Kai exchanging identities to enter an undercover world of dance. I take this to be his desired world / true self world. The dance he does above the underground is showy and wild and causes a big fuss, but underground, it's the realm of ballerinas and masked dancers. Serious, sexy, and a little threatening. A place not every man could dare to go. That's how I interpret it. The risk Kai took/takes in being an accomplished ballet dancer.

His voice suits the song better than the original singers, and the performance of the choreography adds so much to the song. I'd be lying to say it wasn't stuck in my head all week! I see how the decision was taken to choose this song because it is a banger. And he killed it. And the dance cover of SF9's Yoo Taeyang showcases how well the song and choreography fit. The dance is sick, and the song is fun.

The bottom line for me is that Kai is an accomplished dancer and Kpop artist, and this release is dance-centered. That's explicit from the MV itself, but should be from the power of the choreography. It fits him well, so how the song was acquired is less important. What he and the team have done with it is where my focus is.

I'm already looking forward to a full Bomba performance, btw. Give me half-naked cowboy tease Kai.

Talk that Talk - TWICE

TELL ME WHAT YOU WANT, TELL ME WHAT YOU NEEDDDDDDD

No haha, but actually, this song is so fun. It’s adorable and so bouncy, and absolutely packed-full with that signature Twice sound that is undeniably addicting.

Twice is so fascinating to me because essentially, a lot of their discography touches on the exact same beats. But the beat is simply so good and so refined that it never matters. You’ll never be bored with Twice because the sheer flavor of their ear candy is just that delicious. It’s magic - they are magic.

And speaking of the members? They all look incredible in this comeback’s styling. I’m not even sure what to call this style - maybe subtle Y2K? - but that’s okay. What I do know is I’ve watched like 3 stages for this song, and the girls somehow look better in every single one. Momo stands out in particular to me. She’s just so gorgeous - but I’m sure you don’t need me to tell you that.

Overall Score: 8.5/10

SKZ 5 STAR COMEBACK THOUGHTS

first, a review of the songs and then my overall thoughts!!

song review

Hall of Fame: from the get go, it establishes the space vibe with the opening tune! a great opening love the galileo and armstrong references etc, although the 'one small step' quote from armstrong, while it does fit the theme, kinda breaks up the song for me so it's not my favourite part. the build up in the prechorus is SO GOOD! the chorus is really punchy and i'm so in love with felix's little rap verse he really does make it iconic.

S-Class: so so so COOL!! the whistling part is so awesome and it starts with guns blazing with changbin's rap. HYUNJIN SLAYED THAT VERSE!! i really love it. all the raps are so good and the serpent road melody is so good?? THIS CHORUS IS HIGHLY ADDICTIVE!! the switch to a slower beat and the hip hop vibe was very unexpected but very welcome :) the buildup to the second chorus is so great omg i love how its the same but different! seungmin was really good in the we're special part ughhhh the dance break slayed so much as well i just have positive things to say about this song except maybe the ending i don't hate but also don't love how it ends

ITEM: GAMER ERA!! it's 'funnily annoying' just like they said in the intro video really does give video game vibes! super addictive and i love the diction as changbin focused on it really levels up the song. ITEM ITEM I ATE THEM PAC MAN!!! han's rap >>> i also like felix's celebrate we gonna elevate line that was so good i ate that shit up. EVERYTHING IS AMAZING NO WORDS!!! the bridge isn't my best but i really like the buildup to the final chorus and it overall slayed so hard. mv maybe?

Super Bowl: omg. literally. i can see how it was meant to be the original gods menu but im glad they saved it for five star because it honestly just fits so much better with this album and it feels a lot more cohesive. ENGLISH SONG KINGS!! every line is just pure mastery ugh i'm so hooked onto this song and the way chan says ruULes like >>>> changbin's rap ughhhhh and then jeongin saying the everything you're craving its all me like TOAST?? BABY BREAD WHO? and then the stunner HELL OF A LINE I KNOW ITS HELLA FINE HELLS KITCHEN TASTING DIVINE!! the backing instrumental is quite simple which works well because the singing isn't overshadowed. never thought i'd live to see the day hanji said 'bussin' but WHO ELSE?? such a killer like omg and then the chorus UGH I DIED the whispering the word play the seductive vibe with the urge to shake my ass off and ugh i can't compute. heyday reference by changbin!!! lee know's prechorus was so good ugh i really would like a mv or smth for this as well. the bridge was really good imo!!! and the transition from the 'bring the rain' to 'cooking up a storm' and having the same semantic field UGHHHH the ending with felix was so fine as well 🤤

TOPLINE (feat.Tiger JK): love love love the instrumental!!! braggadocios as they should be 😤 THE PRECHORUS IS MY LOVE I ADORE IT AN UNGODLY AMOUNT!!! SEUNGMIN'S VOICE!!!!! lmaoooo chan dropping in the 'we don't give a f***' i see now why he was so surprised with the Xdinary Heroes and their supposed uncensored swearing whereas he had to blur it out haha. the chorus DELIVERS! BOM DIGI DIGI BOM BOM BOM BOM! tiger jk is a rlly great rapper and i'm so happy that han gets his dream to rap with him bcs his rap slayed! and then the 'ain't nobody can do it like us' reference to circus!! >>> lee know slayed the second chorus ^^ great song :D the ending was so great <3

DLC: THIS IS SO GREAT!! the instrumental is so nice, a lot lighter than the previous songs and a nice break from the heaviness hehe. the tune is so addictive and i love the SUNRISE part <3. even if the lyrics are a bit sad, as @oh-the-aster-blooms put it, 'sometimes when you are sad, dancing all night sounds better', and i totally agree :) everything just kinda flows so well and their voices work really well together. i really adore i.n's 'run away run away' part my baby has such an angelic voice. the bridge is also cool :)

GET LIT: idk is it just me but for some reason get lit just brings worth it by 5th harmony to mind with the jazzy vibes at the start, but like...better (no offence to 5th harmony) this is such a swag brag song! the raps are so great to start off omg and then the sudden transition to seungmin's beautiful voice ugh THE CHORUS!!!! i love how felix does his line and it drops into the vibe. the next verse is so like subtle brag idk how to explain it but the swerve swerve part> i do feel imo that the bridge is bit disconnected at the beginning but when changbin does his 'speaker' part it flows really well. i like the dance break! it is a bit repetitive but oh well it slays anyways.

Collision: i saw someone somewhere say it was like chill on steroids (idk who u are sorry for not giving credit 🙇‍♀️) and its so true. it really has the same vibe like sad but also like vibey idk i think the instruments help a lot with establishing that mood. vocalracha slayed in this >>> so did hyunjinnie and lee know <;3 babe i loved you that line is so good felix >>> and BANG CHAN IN THE VERSE AFTER THE FIRST CHORUS?? so good ugh its like a rainy day kinda song when u just feel a bit sentimental. also felix and...was it lee know? in the second pre chorus? that sounded so amazing ughhhh i really like that metaphor of crashing its very bittersweet <3 han slayed again

FNF: such a strong start with chan!!! changbin and han's raps were so great and the prechorus was really like heart rending idk thats jsut the power of vocalracha ig and again as @oh-the-aster-blooms and i were discussing the chorus does have a great pace which does give the impression of trying to catch up! it gives off movie soundtrack vibes imo. the way they blended their voices with felix was so cool!! hyunjinnie slayed that rap damn. the bridge was so good as well. the meaning behind this song >>

Youtiful: such a sweet song showing their love for stay! chan's explanation was so TT i love my boys so much the instrumental is so soft and soothing and the lyrics >>> listening to this just made my heart warm. its the audio version of chan's big hug <3 this was a very good song for chan. also seungmin, lee know and i.n as well!! i could listen to my babe jeongin saying 'you are a miracle' for ever. the chorus slaps.

i don't really count these two as part of the album as they were already released/just a translated ver so its a lot briefer

THE SOUND (Korean Ver.): the Japanese version slayed, so does this. i liked how they changed the chorus, and everything just fits well idk sometimes i find the translated versions a bit jarring after being used to the og one but this is really good!

Mixtape: Time Out: so great i just love it sm <333

such a great album omg. i love all the songs!!! the line count has improved quite a bit (although lino is lacking in some parts) but overall its pretty fair imo factoring the roles different members play. they've definitely shown us a different facet of their music which is so cool and innovative! love love love

Hi do you keep up with Blackpink? What are your thoughts on their new song? I listened and was a bit surprised by how underwhelming it was, most of their title tracks are really catchy to me but this one didn't really catch my attention and their voices sounded a bit meh overall especially during the chorus part.

Hello!

I do keep up with Blackpink to a degree. They along with SHINee are my "OG" groups. Their last album was kind of meh for me, and that coupled with their lack of performances just made me lose the vibe. Plus I watched a concert once and even though I considered myself a fan, it was so underwhelming I shut it off. 😰

All that being said, I do like the new song and think it's a good fit for the things I originally liked about BP. They have a distinct flavor when they hit right -- like Ddu Ddu Ddu Ddu Ddu etc, lol. This one fits that category much better for me than Ice Cream (truly hate that song). I also think their performance has improved as I watched the VMAs and was pleasantly surprised. Someone reviewed it rather scathingly and said it was "lifeless" and I just thought... you have no idea buddy. 😆

Aespa are a little like BP with the energy they bring (or purposely don't bring... ) and it could be interesting to have a separate post on the norms around girl groups because there are huge differences between what's acceptable and allowed with GGs vs Boy Groups (BGs). Blackpink are hood at finding their own way through those limitations.
