Mini-review:

The moment has finally come: Netflix's best Korean Original has made its return with a second season. And these two years of waiting have been more than worth it. It seemed impossible but, somehow, this new season is even better than the first one. It preserves all of its many strengths, and then it takes them to the next level. Both the directing and the writing are amazingly intense. I spent six whole hours on the edge of my seat, biting my nails to the quick, and the last two episodes left me breathless. I also loved the show's attempts at experimenting, like the musicality in episode 3 or the horror undertones in episode 4. As for the acting, is there anything left to say? This is a cast full of incredible actors, and all of them give career-best performances. This time round, Jung Hae In and Son Suk Ku are probably the MVPs, but everyone does a flawless job. To sum up, this second season blew away my sky-high expectations, and I really hope we get a third one, cause TV shows don't get better than this.

P.S. There's a lot of triggering content here, so please be careful with that. Those of you who watched the first season already know this, but I'm saying it just in case.

Juvenile Justice (2022): Sim Eun-Seok (Kim Hye-Soo) Sim Eun-Seok is an elite judge with a personality that seems unfriendly to others. She hates juvenile criminals and gets assigned to a local juvenile court. There, she breaks custom and administers her own ways of punishing the offenders.

Kill Boksoon (2023): Gil Bok-Soon (Jeon Do-Yeon) Gil Bok-Soon is a single mother and a contract killer working for M. K. Ent. Highly regarded by her peers, she has a 100% success rate and is one of a few killers rated "A" by her company. Right before Gil Bok-Soon is set to renew her contract, she gets involved in a kill or be killed confrontation.

Ballerina (2023): Jang Ok-Ju (Jun Jong-Seo) Ok-Ju used to work as a bodyguard. Ok-Ju is friends with Min-Hee, who is a ballerina. Min-Hee asks Ok-Ju for a favor. She wants Ok-Ju to take revenge.

The Witch: Subversion (2018): Ja-Yoon (Kim Da-Mi) A young girl escapes from a mysterious laboratory where she was trained to become a murder weapon. 10 years later, the girl, named Ja-yoon, is living a normal life, apparently without any memory of her past, she becomes involved in a crime.

Special Delivery (2022): Eun-Ha (Park So-Dam) Eun-Ha is a special driver for deliveries. She delivers anything or anyone for the right price. Her success rate is 100%, but she gets involved in an unexpected delivery accident.

Brave Citizen (2023): So Shi-Min (Shin Hae-Sun) So Shi-Min used to be a boxer in her student days. She now works as a contract teacher at a high school. She confronts a school bully, who frequently torments other students.

1. what ship were you completely obsessed with when you were a teenager, but now you don’t care anymore?

aah man, it’s probably ed & winry from FMA if I’m being honest. now I know why, bc my baby gay younger self saw the potential for ftm!Ed and mtf!Winry since day 1 but I didn’t have the words to understand it as such back then. it’s not that I don’t care anymore but that fandom served its purpose and I am thankful for it. learned about my own stance on gender euphoria thanks to it actually even if the story has nothing to do with it in retrospect.

2. which ship would you consider your first one?

ik that, as a wee child, I was obsessed with Haruka from Sailor Moon flirting with Usagi, but I wouldn’t consider that as a proper “ship”. I learned shipping was a thing at, like, 19. but if I look back at my childhood... probably either Syaoran & Sakura (bi nation where u at??) or Touya/Yukito from Card Captor. I clocked the Tomoyo/Sakura waaaay later tho, which is a pity.

3. your first fanfic belonged to which couple?

first fanfic I read was a D. Gray Man one, so it was probably a Kanda/Allen situation yeah. I think I was 20. oh god.

4. do you remember the first couple you saw a fanart over?

hard to say. I think I had just discovered tumblr, so it means I was either 22 or 23... so I was either in the Pandora Hearts fandom or in the Tokyo Ghoul fandom. and I only followed people from those two so... I think it was an Arima/Haise one? hard to say fr.

5. did you ever get into ship discourse?

I tend to stay away from that. I just mute or block people and go back to play with my fictional people. me is petty at times, yes.

6. did you use to have any no-otp or have it currently?

I do have ships I don’t particularly like, but I find it silly to talk about them. I let people enjoy themselves.

7. who were the couples in the last fanfic you read?

Gaon/Yohan from The Devil Judge bc there’s only one fic in the whole fandom I follow and I generally don’t read fanfics that much. (I may or may not have read a fanfic from Evilive in the past month or so, but if I did I was feverish and recall very little of it).

is there?.... man I have no clue. they are all true in my heart. I can be anal about it and say that I call bullshit on the main girl in True Beauty kdrama not ending up with the second-male lead if I really have to be mad about something but... meh? that’s probably it? the characters were too young for me to empathize with them but I guess that’s still something I think about from time to time?? I feel so silly saying this ahah

10. is there any ship you used to dislike but now you think they are kind of interesting?

honestly, ever since kun opened my eyes about soggy older men being bullied by grumpy older men I have changed as a person. I never disliked it per se but now everything has changed. I see the vision now. I see it. thank u kun :)

11. do you have any ship that, in the past, was considered normal but now you would be cancelled over?

listen. I ship changgu. it’s Gu Yun’s fault to be such a cougar, what was a growing kid like Changgeng supposed to do? not fantasize about his godfather? who, I might add, is only, like, 8 or 9 years older than him and didn’t even want to take that role to begin with and they got together when both were above their mid-twenties anyway? try again tag game. these new fandom babies are eating my face like smooth lions as we speak. (I am joking...)

12. what was your favorite crack ship?

before I left the m/dzs fandom... I guess Wen Q/ing & Lan W/angji as a “beard for beard” situation. they are gay and they are not vibing on prom night, having to dance with each other instead of looking for people they actually like. maybe it’s best that I left the fandom ahah

13. who is the couple you read most fanfics of?

I don’t really... read... fanfics... anymore. usually I’m either in a big ship or a niche show/book with no in between. in the second case... it’s bad bc I feel the urge to WRITE for the fandom and ship in question, which means that I don’t want to read fics about it unless I have finished my own fic for it (bc I don’t want to accidentally steal other people’s ideas. my subconscious is an octopus I swear, it latches onto anything that moves in my brain. I cannot do that to someone else’s creation!); in the first case it works only if I’m not active in the fandom:

take Word of Honor: I write for it and for the main ship too, so I don’t read fics about it

take Evilive or Winter Begonia: we have so few fics in there I MUST WRITE for the main ship, so I don’t read fics about it (sometimes I do cave in tho, yes I am human)

take The Devil Judge or Tomorrow: I’m not active on either of those, so I can enjoy reading fics (only two, one for each fandom)

my life is a struggle ik. the most fics I have read for a ship is probably that sapphic ship I shall not name (evil women come at me!!) and bagginshield from The Hobbit (we are talking 10 years ago tho)

14. what most of your ships usually have in common?

across all genders and all gender combos, I have generally 3 vibes going on:

twice divorced, never married

long suffering banter, but fond

not related, not chosen family, but a secret third thing

(additional flavor: either the younger one is the bossy one or they are the same age and they are making it everyone’s problem at that)

15. what you absolutely hate in a ship?

I would say conformity. if I don’t catch any queer vibes from the main source then what’s the point? even in a het ship I must latch onto some gender magic of some kind. some pegging for everyone would be nice too. or no sex at all, for a change, why not?

9/11 Fahlanruk (Thai)

Fahlan (smart jock) meets Sherbet (edgy bad boy) sparks fly and they end up in bed together. Fahlan feels a lot more for Sherbet than is allowed, so he hides his feelings. Fahlan’s friends Ping and Tap, try to help their boy win his man, but are struggling with friends-to-lovers woes of their own. Looks to be a strong contender in the Thai BL pulp dumpster fire of joy arena. It’s using tropes we rarely see and it tonally seems like a combination of Nitiman + Y-Destiny’s players episode (2 of my 2021 favorites). I like sexually messy and identity confused college dramas but Love Mechanics might have tapped me out. 

Y-novel adaptation featuring a pining seme and high heat, from director Koo who has a long back catalogue of shows, if not a great track record with BL (Club Friday and Tonhon Chonlatee are his). 

9/14 Once Again (Korea) 

Viki Thursdays, 8 eps, 25 min ea  

Time-slip fantasy BL from Moving Picture studio & Idol Romance behind Wish You, Ryu's Wedding, Tasty Florida, Tinted With You, and Kissable Lips (also forthcoming Happy Ending Outside The Fence and The Circumstances of Pungdeok Villa Room 304). Stars actors (no idols) Moon Ji Young (also star in an upcoming BL The New Employee), Lee Hyuk Jun, and Kang Woo Jung.

This is actually the inception story of the characters of AiNi in Tonhon Chonlatee which I didn’t realize. Now I loved those characters, but I disliked that series from a story standpoint and this is the same author so I’m now nervous.

Comfort the Boy AKA A Shoulder to Cry On (Korea)

From Studio Common about a young artist who mysteriously loses his reflection and sees a strange boy in the mirror instead. Stars fresh faces, directed by Too (Triage) and NutSor (screenwriter of Dew).

Happy Ending Outside the Fence (Korea )

JungWoo is a writer who disappeared after being treated unfairly in the publishing industry. TaeYoung, the head of a publishing company, admires and wants him to write again. JungHyun became a star by borrowing JungWoo's writings. The three characters interact and drama results. Stars idol Leo of VIXX.

My entry for the first day of the Celebrrration22 organised by the lovely @celebrrration! Extremely self indulgent and somewhat melodramatic, but hey that clearly is a style I'm enjoying so I'm owning it.

Summary: While visiting Bheema in the village, Rama hears a familiar song which brings back unhappy memories. Post Canon.

Evening came fast in the village, awakening the many insects of the night. Rama sat at the door of the hut, pen and paper in hand, waiting for Bheema to return from the council. He could see the shrine of the goddess, see the light of the many lamps lit around, see Bheema’s animated face as he bounced a baby in his powerful arms. Rama had arrived with a fresh shipment of arms which his men had intercepted going to Vishakapatnam a month ago, and now seemed as good a time as any other to visit Bheema at his village, to discuss further plans. 

Nearly everyone was friendly and welcoming, but Rama tried to not tag along everywhere with Bheema so that the few people who were still wary of him could see that he knew his place and would not overly intrude unless asked to. Besides, he could see and hear perfectly well from Bheema’s hut, where he had been staying, without being observed himself. He always had a credible excuse for Bheema, books to read, guns to clean and ready for the next day, letters to write - to Seetha, now married to another revolutionary and pregnant with her first child, to his Babai, now an ex-police officer or to his many spies and comrades scattered across the country. 

“Komma Uyyala Kona Jampala …” a high voice started singing by the fireside, making him start. It wasn’t Malli, who was resting against her mother’s shoulder, her eyes dreamy, but another young girl named Champa. The lyrics were sweet and unfamiliar, an innocent wonder in them, but it was the tune - the tune which made his eyes water before he knew it, his breath speeding up. 

“Komma satuna paade koyilaa Koo antee koo antu …” the singing continued as the audience smiled and swayed to the music. But all Rama could hear was Bheema’s gruff, deep voice singing his own powerful ballad on that long ago day filled with blood and thorns. Rama felt his heart rate pick up, thundering as his breath grew unsteady. Bheema gently rocked the infant, his eyes intent on Champa, his eyes cold and guarded. Even when they were on opposing sides of the battle, there had been anger, pleading, hurt, agony on Bheema’s face, but never this closed off expression. 

All of a sudden he could no longer bear to sit there, in the house of the man he had whipped almost to death, the man he had betrayed over and over and the man he loved more than life itself. He stood up, unsteady on his feet, stumbling towards the distant river. He ran and ran, pursued by the song reverberating in his own head, interspersed with Bheema’s gasps and groans of pain as Rama lashed him. He ran and ran until he tripped over a stray vine, tumbling headlong into a thorny bush. 

The needles tore through his thin cotton kurta as he thrashed himself free, leaving deep scrapes on his arms and back. He continued at a brisk pace, ignoring his throbbing foot and burning body. The moon shone in patches along the dense foliage illuminating the massive Jilledu bushes that marked the way to the river. The crickets sang loudly as he neared the water, their voices almost overwhelmed with the warbling of the frogs. 

Rama felt suddenly weary when he finally reached the banks of the river, its waters joyfully leaping and playing in the moonlight. He buried his face in his arms, wanting to shut it all out - the moonlight, the stars, the curious fireflies which buzzed around him, the scent of the wild jasmine vines that perfumed the air around him. It was all so lovely, and he had never felt so tainted and ugly. 

What was Bheema thinking now? Was he recollecting that day as well, that day under the burning sun when he had refused to bow to the monster that Rama was? Rama remembered Bheema’s gaze that day, scorching and burning him, the contempt and defiance in his eyes. He didn’t think he could bear to see that again. The river lapped at his feet, calling to him, and for one crazy minute he wondered how it would be to just listen and enter… and let go. He had fulfilled his promise to his father, there were others, far better men and women than him to lead the revolution. Would it ease the burden of his sins or would it just be another act of cowardice?    

“Rama!” roared a familiar voice, and Rama felt his heart leap as Bheema crashed through the undergrowth, his chest panting, a massive spear strapped to his back. Rama felt his back pop painfully as Bheema leaped at him, sweeping Rama into his arms. “Parameshwara! Why are you here? Why did you venture away from the village in the dark, completely unarmed? Why -” 

He broke off abruptly as his eyes scanned Rama’s face, and whatever he saw in them turned him back into the cold, unfamiliar man that Rama saw by the fireside. “What were you about to do?” he asked Rama, his voice low and a little menacing, and Rama felt a sudden thrill of real fear grip him. 

“Nothing.” Rama said, throat dry. He looked away from Bheema’s eyes - eyes he normally loved to get lost in, eyes as deep and large as the sea, eyes that now belonged to a stranger.

“Do you have so little faith in our bond?” Bheema asked him, “Is your pain so unbearable that you would throw me away?” 

Rama’s head snapped up at that, his heart pounding. Bheema’s face is close, so close he could count his eyelashes, close enough to smell the arecanut and camphor smell that always emanated from him. “I did terrible things.” he whispered, not daring to look directly at Bheema, focusing on the glint of his nose ring. 

“So have I.” Bheema said.

“Not like me,” Rama protested. You only went to war to save your sister. You only hurt someone when it was absolutely necessary. You spared my life even when you thought I was bent on murdering an innocent child. You saved me. You fought for me, you were willing to die for me, you understood me. You forgave me. I killed men for nothing more than the possibility of a promotion. I tortured my fellow country men, I broke bones, arrested them to face even more torture, let them hang without a backwards glance. I let a woman wait for me for years and then refused to marry her because I couldn’t bear to pollute her.  

“Rama -” Bheema’s voice is suddenly soft, suddenly kind again. He tilted up Rama’s chin, and kissed him softly. Rama felt himself shiver, felt his skin tingling from the touch. “I love you.” 

“Why?” Rama asked him before he could really think. 

“Why not?” retorted Bheema. Then, watching Rama’s head droop onto his chest, he added. “You are more than the sum of your bad deeds. You have seen so much and lost so many. You did your best with what options you had, you were willing to be hated, to be despised, to lose everyone’s support, all for the greater good. I told you once that your friendship is more precious to me than my life. I stand by it.”

Rama looked away at this, breath hitching. He remembered that night well. Remembered Bheema’s bewildered expression when Rama repaid his debt by arresting him and thwarting Bheema’s purpose. 

“We have a long road ahead of us,” Bheema continued softly. “And perhaps neither of us may make it alive. Don’t you want to spend what time we have together?”

“I whipped you.” Rama whispered, the tears finally overflowing. 

Bheema didn’t respond at first, instead drawing Rama closer to his chest. “If you had not, your cover would have blown and perhaps I would have been executed before you got a chance to tamper with the guns. Malli would have remained a prisoner.”

“But if I-” began Rama, but Bheema quickly hushed him.

“Do not torment yourself over possibilities, Rama. Whatever has happened, has happened. When I say I love you, I mean I love you. Exactly as you are. You are my lotus flower, born in slime, but untouched and pure, worthy of adorning the gods.” He withdrew slightly, smiling softly at the dazed expression on Rama’s face. “Your life belongs to me, Rama. You owe me at least that much.”

Rama watched him, speechless. He had never felt this safe, this comforted, this beloved before. Bheema picked him easily in his powerful arms, still smiling gently into Rama’s eyes. “Then come home with me, and stay. Will you?”

“Yes.”

Taxi Driver 2 Ep. 12

After being kicked out of Black Sun and beaten up, Do-Ki is arrested by the police instead of them intervening. Despite Young-Min's help in bailing him out, Do-Ki now realizes that the police are working with Black Sun. Rainbow Transport infiltrates the club to bring them to justice for the crimes they are committing.

Episode 12 "I Need To Get Back Inside"

In Episode 12 of Taxi Driver Season 2, Do-Ki is taken into police custody on Guard Jang's orders. Go-Eun, Kyung-Koo, and Jin-Eon witness Do-Ki being taken away, while the mother of the minor arrives in an ambulance to take her son and his friend away. The woman berates Guard Jang for allowing her son in, and Jang blames his subordinate for letting something like this happen. Jang discovers that the children gained entry to the club through Windy. Jang requests that Windy's schedule be erased, which prompts the escort. She locates Jang in the VIP room and slaps him for causing her financial harm. Jang informs Windy that the club can handle situations such as rape or assault, but allowing minors inside is unacceptable. Windy attacked the chief guard by hitting im with her heel and breaking a glass bottle over his head as revenge. Yoo Moon-Hyun, the chief in charge of Black Sun, walked in and separated the two.

Meanwhile, Detective Jang Jin-Ho called Guard Jang to inform him about Do-Ki's arrest. During Do-Ki's interrogation by Senior Officer Jo Min-Geon, Detective Jang claimed that Do-Ki was being arrested on charges of molestation. Do-Ki was locked up and left in shock. Meanwhile, Go-Eun attempted to gather information to assist Do-Ki. She spotted the journalist from earlier that night entering the police station. Kim Young-Min, the journalist, managed to help release Do-Ki from lockup. During a meal and drinks, Young-Min and Do-Ki bonded, and the journalist shared how he saved Do-Ki using CCTV footage. Do-Ki praised Young-Min for his bravery in being beaten up by the guards at Black Sun to expose them. Young-Min advises Do-Ki to steer clear of Black Sun and requests that he refrain from interfering. At Rainbow Taxi headquarters, the sun group speculates about the events at Black Sun. Go-Eun discloses that the club had six owners, none of whom were the true owners, but rather individuals posing as such. To investigate the club, Do-Ki decides to use a method other than attending as a guest.

In one of the VIP rooms, Park Hyun-Jo, the chief of police and one of the club's owners, is with Victor. The idol thanks the cop for saving him from a DUI. Hyun-Jo signs the revenue chart for the month, which shows that Black Sun's monthly business is 5.64 million dollars. Hyun-Jo is invited by the idol to his comeback party, which will be held at a private resort with women that Hyun-Jo likes. Hyun-Jo informs Victor that the club is making a profit every month. Kyung-Koo and Jin-Eon successfully take down one drunk guard outside the club while Do-Ki abducts two others in his taxi. Moon-Hyun is frustrated that Guard Jang is unable to handle the other guards and contacts someone to get replacements from the gym.

Do-Ki is a gym-goer who was selected to work at Moon-Hyun's club due to his aggression, which he demonstrated by beating two other gym-goers. Guard Jang is surprised to see Do-Ki as one of the new guards, but Do-Ki lies and says he acted on instinct that day to avoid an argument. Moon-Hyun appreciates Do-Ki's attitude and asks him to report any minors seen in the club directly to him. Guard Jang has narrated a set of rules for the bouncers. The rules state that only men and women who meet certain appearance standards are allowed inside the club. The club only allows VIP males during peak hours at 12am. VIP women who meet certain appearances standards are also granted access after 12am. Windy and Jang bicker in front of the junior guards. Do-Ki is assigned as Guard #9 on the main dance floor and instructed not to intervene in any fights.

CEO Yang recognizes Do-Ki as the guard and appears pleased to see him. During his break, Do-Ki chats with the other members of the revenge crew. However, Guard Jang spots him there. To face Jang, Do-Ki puts on a scene and kicks Jin-Eon and Kyung-Koo out of the club's premises. Jang is shocked to learn that CEO Kang wants to meet Do-Ki and invites him inside. Jang informs Do-Ki that he will now be working with the VIPs. Like the other guards, Do-Ki must protect the alcohol bottle with his employee number (#9). If the bottle shatters, breaks or is stolen, Do-Ki will be responsible for it. He follows the VIP who was holding the bottle #9 and enters the VIP room. Do-Ki observes that the VIP clients are middle-aged women who are being entertained by male escorts. Fortunately, CEO Kang is also present in the same room and is conversing with Ha-Joon who is on his way inside the club.

A superior guard coincidentally calls Do-Ki out and swaps his employee ID with him. As a result, Do-Ki becomes guard #2 and is instructed to wait outside. Ha-Joon notices Do-Ki leaving the VIP area, but doesn't think much of it. Do-Ki witnesses two guards dragging a drunk VIP client into a car and is then asked to drive the woman home. In her VIP room, CEO Kang becomes suspicious when she finds someone else wearing the #9 badge. She ends up breaking a bottle, which frightens the guards and other guests even more. During a discussion about the bishop's arrival, Ha-Joon intervenes and puts on a show to entertain the guards. He fights three of them alone and manages to beat them all. The VIPs are entertained by the guards being beaten up. CEO Kang agrees to fulfil Ha-Joon's wish as per their deal.

Meanwhile, Do-Ki is concerened about the client who is passed out in his car but notices that another car is following him. he whispers to Go-Eun, asking her to run a check on the number plates. She discovers that the car belongs to journalist Kim Young-Min. Do-Ki attempts to escape from Young-Min, but the journalist crashes into his vehicle. Young-Min is recognized by the other guards in the car. The journalist rams into Do-Ki's vehicle in an attempt to stop him. Young-Min loses his balance and is about to be hit by a truck. However, Do-Ki uses his vehicle to save the journalist. He beats up the guards who come to check on him after using pepper spray. Do-Ki tells the journalist that they need to take the girl to the hospital as soon as possible. Young-Min informs Do-Ki at the hospital that the girl was drugged and at risk of sexual assault. The doctor confirms that the girl had drugs in her system and had reported it to the police. The woman is arrested by female officers while Detective Jang Jin-Ho reads her rights while she is still sedated.

Do-Ki and Young-Min observe as the girl is taken away, and the journalist appears angry. He returns to the car where the guards have just regained consciousness. Do-Ki pretends to be unconscious too, as the guards are concerned about losing the drugged girl. Later, after finishing his shift, Do-Ki meets with Young-Min at his house to discuss the case he was working on. Do-Ki discovers that Young-Min had been working to expose the Black Sun for a while. After Do-Ki insists, Young-Min admits that he was seeking revenge for the death of his friend, Choi Seung-Eun. Seung-Eun was killed after attempting to expose the Black Sun. The incident was reported as a suicide, but Young-Nim knows it was staged.

Young-Min holds himself responsible for the incident because he drove Seung-Eun to the Black Sun nichtglub where drugs worth millions were being sold. Seung-Eun had called Young-Nim for help, but reportedly killed himself before they could meet. The police showed Young-Min footage of Seung-Eun, who allegedly died by suicide due to loans and debt. Young-Min believes Seung-Eun saw something he shouldn't have at the nightclub and vowed to uncover the truth about his death. Young-Min inspected the tapes and noticed that Seung-Eun did not have the spy cam pen he was given. Additionally, Young-Min observed that Seung-Eun's demeanor had changed after leaving Black Sun. Furthermore, Black Sun framed Young-Min, resulting in his termination from his job. The journalist filmed himself on the rooftop hoping that Black Sun guards would kill him. This would draw public attention to the nightclub's wrongdoings. Do-Ki left Rainbow Taxi's contact information for Young-Nim before returning to headquarters.

Go-Eun and the others believe that fighting Black Sun is beyond their capabilities. However, Do-Ki is certain that Young-Min was also after the same target they were. Sung-Chul remains neutral on the situation and suggests that the nightclub, Black Sun, may have the answers to their questions. He recommends taking the case on. Meanwhile, Do-Ki reassures Go-Eun that everything will be okay. Later that night, Do-Ki drops off Young-Min after taking on his case. The group resumes using the taxi M5283, and the episode concludes.

Puur omdat ik deze week naar een concert van The Waterboys ga koos ik hun bekendste album 'This Is The Sea' uit 1985 als LP van de Week. Bij de DisCovered greep ik de reünie van een Nederlands duo aan, en bij de Filmplaat zette ik een fout van vorige week met Emerson, Lake & Palmer recht.
