It's a truism that silent movies and talkies constitute two distinct artistic media, and to judge the one by the standards of the other is an error. But it's almost impossible to watch films made by older directors, especially those who came of age when silent films were being made, without noticing the efforts they make to tell their stories without speech. It's true of John Ford, Alfred Hitchcock, and Howard Hawks, even though they, especially Hawks, became masters of dialogue in their films. And it's true of Kurosawa, who although he didn't begin his career in films until 1936 and directed his first one in 1943, was born in 1910 and grew up with silent movies. I think it helped him learn the universals of storytelling that are independent of language, so that he became the most popular of all Japanese filmmakers. Others rank the work of Ozu or Mizoguchi more highly, but Kurosawa's films manage to transcend the limitations of subtitles more easily. Of none of his films is this more true than Seven Samurai, which is also generally regarded, even by those with reservations about Kurosawa's work, as his masterpiece. That's not a word I use lightly, but having sat enthralled through the uncut version, three hours and 27 minutes long, last night, I'm willing to endorse it. It's an exhilarating film, with none of the longueurs that epics -- I'm thinking of Gone With the Wind (Victor Fleming, 1939) and Lawrence of Arabia (David Lean, 1962) -- so easily fall into. I don't know of any action film with as many vividly drawn characters, and that's largely because Kurosawa takes the time to delineate each one. It's also a film about its milieu, 16th-century Japan, although as its American imitation, The Magnificent Seven (John Sturges, 1960), shows, there's a universality about the antagonism between fighters and farmers. Kurosawa captures this particularly well in the character of Kikuchiyo (Toshiro Mifune), the would-be samurai who reveals in mid-film that he was raised as a farmer and carried both a kind of self-hate for his class along with a hatred for the arrogant treatment of farmers by samurai. Mifune's show-off performance is terrific, but the film really belongs to Takashi Shimura, who radiates stillness and wisdom as Kambei Shimada, the leader of the seven. There are clichés to be found, such as the fated romance of the young samurai trainee Katsushiro (Isao Kimura) and the farmer's daughter Shino (Keiko Tsushima), but like the best clichés, they ring true. Seven Samurai earned two Oscar nominations, for Takashi Matsuyama's art direction and Kohei Ezaki's costumes, but won neither. Overlooking Kurosawa's direction, Shimura's performance, and Asakazu Nakai's cinematography is unforgivable, if exactly what one expects from the Academy.

Tickle Fight

⚠️Note: i must say this request was quite a challenge for me at the beginning (hence why Haruka's is a bit short). It took me probably two weeks to finish so i am really really really sorry if this is not what you expected, anon. Regardless, i had a good time finishing it so thank you for requesting this. About some of the writing... i-i couldn't find another way to end it so i am REALLY sorry if it turned a little bit suggestive, or literal crack 🥲.

⚠️Warnings: a little bit suggestive so read at your own risk

Spending time at your boyfriend's house has never been this peaceful. Just the two of you watching Tokusastu in his room. No noisy twin brother, no parents, no 13 year old demon who toys with people, no homework, and... no green haired Loch-ness monster.

Simply put, you don't really like Tokusastu show that much, you don't even have a clue what that is. But as long as there's peace, food, and him, you're willing to take the opportunity. A very rare opportunity.

Still, you're bored. You want attention and Haruka is currently indulging himself in his favorite show, sitting on the floor beside you.

Until a malicious idea came to your mind.

"Haruka," you called to him

"Mm?" He responded. His eyes fixed on the tv screen still.

With a completely normal tone, you asked him, "Are you ticklish?"

"That's a stupid ques– NO!"

He didn't get the chance to finish his sentence as you tackle him and your hands attack his middle area, "Ah... So you ARE ticklish hehehe." Grinning evilly on top of him.

"Plea- Please stop‐ I can't... Hahaha," he whimpered. Attempting to get your hands off of him.

"Well, i have my answer now. Thank you."

As you start to get off from him, he seems to get a revenge idea. He pushed you until your back meets the carpeted floor, his eyes looked playfully dark with evil intention.

You can't help but think, 'Wow he's gorgeous– wait, no, oh God he's mad'

"How annoying... Don't think i'm gonna let you off that easy."

"You're going to lose, Kana-chan." You grinned at him.

"Heee... If that happens, please don't be so harsh on Kana-chan's punishment," he said as he scanned UNO cards he got and you noticed he winced at his deck.

One simple rule. Loser will do anything the winner says.

Complete surrender to the winner.

Although you didn't expect him to say yes to hanging out just the two of you. You thought he would bring some of his friends since he has many and the more the merrier. Now both of you are playing UNO against each other.

It is now your turn. Preparing to pull the +4 black card, you try to find any expression other than utter confusion on Kanata's face. You chuckled, he looked cute like that. And by the looks of it, looks like you're going to win this round.

The game goes and you're at your last two. Pulling out one of your last two of the card slowly for the dramatic effect, "Ready to lose, Kana-chan?"

"Not fair! We're just getting started, y'know?"

Slamming the card onto the table, you proudly yell, "UNO! I CHOOSE BLUE!" Now all you need to do is pray he doesn't have any good cards to separate you from victory. Can't wait to tell him what his punishment is going to be.

But Goddess of Victory doesn't feel like granting your wish.

Because Kanata pulled 4 of his 2+ card in all 4 colors.

You only have one Blue 3.

He has none now.

"UNO GAME! Yayy! Kana-chan wins!" Kanata cheered in victory. "Now for loser's punishment... Hmm..." He seemed to be in deep thought.

"I thought i was going to win," you sighed. "Please don't make me do anything weird."

"What about..." he began to grinned. "...finding out how far you can go without laughing when i tickle you, eh?"

And at that exact moment, you regret playing UNO with him.

"KANATA PLEASE ANYTHING BUT THAT– AHAHAH-" His fingers barely poked your sides but you're already full of laughter. How did he know that's your weakest spot?

"Eh?? You don't last long, do you y/n-chan?" He giggled. As if you're not being tormented by his way of torture. "Hehe... I love seeing you laugh." It would've sounded better if you're not in this situation you're currently in.

Finally, with scraps of stamina you have, you tightly grip both of his wrists, putting a stop to this torment.

"Kanata..." you muttered, dripping with malicious intent, gazing at your boyfriend with dangerous gleam in your eyes. "Did you realize that you have signed your own death contract just now?"

You chose his open spot to harass, tickling his stomach and his sides with no mercy. He fell on the ground the second your hands are on him, roar with laughter. "Now look who's more ticklish, huh?!! You should find lesser opponent if you want to tickle someone!"

"Ok I'm sorr– Ahaha– Please stop, y/n." he whimpered while somehow still sounding giggly. Oh now he's rolling on the floor?

Silence fell in, only sound of both of you panting after laughing too much. Kanata signed and mumbled to himself, "well... this takes me back"

"Hm? Did you say something?" You asked.

"Nope! Nothing. Wanna play another round?"

"He's so dumb, he never fails to amuse me since we were little." You laughed so hard you had tears in your eyes. "I can't believe this movie came out years ago. Right, Kohei?"

"I remember the first time we watched it back then. You couldn't stop laughing and you'd bring it up again at school the next day." He chuckled remembering those times and how you always had that innocently adorable face, even until now, everytime you talked about something you like.

Kohei and you have been friends for as long as you can remember. You're also friends with the rest of his childhood best friends. But by the final year of high-school, when he started to join a band and being separated from you. He realized his feelings for you and asked you to go out with him. To be honest it was a bit scary for him because you'll either say yes and be a couple or reject him and lose you forever. He didn't like the idea of losing you like that.

But you said yes.

Unfortunately, you had to continue your study in Nagasaki while Kohei and his band moved to Kichioji to participate in LRF. You'd be lying if long distance relationship isn't hard, especially when both of you never not see each other that long. So you and him made a promise to spend long holidays together if there's a chance.

The movie shows a scene where the main character's best friend is tickling the main character because he forgot to invite his friend to get drunk together. That kind of reminded you of something...

"Kohei," you called to him, "are you still... you know..."

"Still what?" He asked while munching popcorn. Eyes focused on the movie.

"Are you still ticklish like when we were little?" Damned the movie. Your hands creep to his upper sides, to where his weakest spots were.

To no surprise, he's still weak.

"HAHAHA- s-stop it tickles." The people downstairs probably heard Kohei laugh but you didn't care as you continue to harass him until he's lying on the floor.

"Fufu~" your fingers lightly touch his sides, not wanting to be away from him. "Haven't changed, i see," you mumbled in amusement.

But that amusement did not last long.

Kohei being his strongest guy you know, he pinned you to the floor, his hand holding your knee, your leg on his shoulder. "You think I forgot your weakest spots, y/n?" He wickedly smile as his thumb feathered the back of your knee.

Is it too late to apologize?

Salty sea breeze caressing your face, the sound of waves crashing against the shore, finally wearing the cute bikini you've always wanted to wear, perfect amount of sunlight, and the best tropical drink in hand. Is this heaven?

"Reon," you called out to your boyfriend beside you, who seemed like he's dozing off knowing full well he's in the middle of the beach. Part of you wanted to let him rest but, both of you were chose this place for a reason and that's to see live music performance near the beach. And you won't let your monthly allowance being wasted for nothing but that's for another topic.

Poor him. He always put so many effort to get to the top despite the challenges thrown his way. But it required the same amount of effort for you to convince him that he need some rest and a good vacation. Having to bear your fangs at Nayuta was a scary experience itself but you finally managed to have Reon all to yourself for a whole week. Away from that dictator.

"Reon~" you whispered to his ear, "if you don't wake up now, I'm taking your sunglasses for myself." You've been eyeing that sunglasses since he bought it from Tokyo. He won't let you have it because it was a limited edition from his favorite fashion brand and it costed him half a month of his allowance.

"Don't you dare."

Looks like it worked.

"Mm? Too late." Taking the sunglasses from his head and wear it. "It looks better on me anyway~"

"Oi! Stop stealing my things! He ordered. "You don't even giving the old one back."

"Which one? I took the Dior one and... uh I forgot the brand."

"YOU TOOK MORE?!"

"Absolutely correct, babe." You took a sip from your drink. "Once again, they look even better on me." You winked at him.

"More of the reason why I won't let you take any more of my things," he stated. "Now be a good girlfriend and hand it back to me."

"Nope." Putting the empty glass on the table. "Gotta catch me of you want this back. But i suggest you stay here instead since you're so tired~" you teased him as you started running away towards the beach house to change outfit. Let's hope you won't be late to the live performance.

"I swear if it touched even a single sand- y/n, wait!"

(at the beach house)

"Why- Why do you run so fast.." he trailed off.

"Oh, finally you're here. Should I wear this one or this one?" you showed him two different outfit as if he didn't just walked/ran after you.

He sighed. "The left one."

"I knew it. Thanks babe!" As you were about to enter the bathroom to change, he grabbed your waist. "Why are you ignoring me?"

"Me?" You looked at him innocently. "Well then you want to watch me change here?"

His face redden. "N-No that's now what I was- Just tell me where you hide my sunglasses?"

"Hmm, maybe you should search my entire body for that hehe~" Did you just make that up or are you actually drunk?

Reon went silent. "Maybe I'll just have to force the answer out of you. How about that?"

"How exactly?"

He's tickling you starting from your exposed sides. You burst out laughing, trying to get out of his hold around your waist with no result.

"If you give it back I might stop tickling you," he stated.

"Th-That's cheating, Reon..." But surrendering was never an option. "Not unless you're too busy laughing!!"

You caught his wrists in your grip while your other hand take the advantage to repay his action. Looking down at him as he's trashing and laughing beneath you. Turns out he's worse at handling it more than you, huh..

"If you hurry and chance, AND let me have your sunglasses for a whole day I might stop tickling you." You mimicked his earlier statement. "Aren't I merciful?"

"Fine... Can you please stop now?" he whined.

"Hehe sorry~" You said without an ounce of sorry in your words. "I've bought you this outfit so we can match. Will you consider this an apology token?"

"More like a trade," he grumbled. "But thanks, babe. You've got good eyes."

"Awee, I love you too." You leaned in to kiss his cheek. "Hurry up and change before we're late. I want to watch them from the front."

"I didn't even ask for your permission," you said from the phone. "I even bought you coffee."

"I never ask for a damn coffee." Nayuta pinched the bridge of his nose.

"Well, Kenta-san always makes you coffee and you never say no. I'm your girlfriend so i want to treat you too, you know? I even bothered to asked him where you usually get your coffee too."

"Since when did you go all buddy-buddy with Satozuka-"

"And I'm sure Nyankotaro miss me."

"Listen to me when I'm talki-"

"I'm at your front door."

"Huh?!"

He opened the front door while both of you are still on the line. You just stood there with a small bag and a tray of coffees in your other hand.

You handed the coffee to Nayuta, "Here."

Nyankotaro came up from behind him, meowing towards you as if she's sensing your presence. Or more like the cat food you bringing with you. Circling around you with her tail brushing against your legs.

"Someone clearly knows how to treat their guest," you said. "Aren't you the best girl, Nyankotaro?" She purred in response.

"Damn you," he grumbled. "If you disturb me I'm kicking you out."

Making yourself comfortable at Nayuta's apartment was never an issue. Especially when the actual ruler of the place accept your presence in exchange for cat food and new toys. The rest of GYROAXIA would be welcoming too if they found you chilling at Nayuta's place. Sometimes Miyuki would be too welcoming but once you hit him with 'hi bro' he immediately stopped.

Opening the canned food and offering it to the feline. "Here you go~ Good girl~" You watched her eat on your lap as you pet her like she's your own. Maybe you should steal her. What if she's not loved enough by Nayuta?

Nyankotarou is usually a calm cat. Prefers to be left alone to do whatever she pleases. But right now it seems like she'd rather have company. Brushing her soft fur gently with your fingers, she sits on your lap and you started rubbing her neck, the cat's nonstop purring filled your ears with joy but... Won't that be ticklish? Can cats feel ticklish?

Unfortunately, a dumb idea came through your brain

Is Nayuta ticklish?

You asked yourself, do i have a death wish?

Nonetheless, your body acted on your own. You quietly make your way to the kitchen where he sits at the dinner table with his back facing you. It seemed like he's too focused on whatever he's doing to even notice you sneaking up behind him. And you found him sipping the coffee you bought him. You couldn’t help but smile yet also mad because he didn't do it in front of you to show his appreciation.

Now back to business. Your aim was the back of his neck to see whether he's ticklish there or not. As you got close to his exposed neck, you swallowed all your fears and launch your attack.

His reflex to that was...

He almost jumped from his seat.

Similar to cats when they're shocked and angry and their fur standing out in order to intimidate the offender. Defense: up.

To think that your scary boyfriend shares similar trait to cats made you want to laugh so hard you couldn't hold it any longer.

You burst into laughter, "I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU'RE ACTUALLY TICKLISH THERE HAHA-"

"Y/n..." he muttered. His tone wasn't too pleasing.

Uh-oh... The scene in front of you doesn't look too good. The coffee was spilled onto the table, soaking the things close to it. The sound of liquid dripping down the floor filled the deafening silence.

One notebook took the most damage.

"Inside that notebook is... " he began slowly, "...the lyrics for the damn fess"

The cat has now turned into a lion.

And there's no way to escape.
