The KNPS Toa/Turaga Metru from @magicalgirlmascot's Kini Nui Public School fic

On the left is how they looked as Toa circa 2004, on the right are the Metru as Turaga in late 2024. In descending order: Vakama, Nokama, Onewa, Matau, Whenua, Nuju

The challenge with an AU like this is having to humanize the Great and Noble forms of the masks in a way that still looks like the same person 20 years apart. As well as being a modern AU with no facial markings, cybernetics or weird accessories to clearly mark who's who, so the characters have to inherently be a bit Just Some Guy looking at first glance. Anyway, there's a lot of little details that link to their canon masks and aspects of the story, so I'll be curious to see which ones people pick up on.

I've just realized a different aspect of hilarity about the Turaga Nui in KNPS AU, and that's their history with the Hagah.

Can you imagine the Hagah's reactions when they realize the TN is the concentrated chaos and relationships of ALL six of the turaga?

I'm not gonna lie my immediate reaction was "wait are high school swim teams actually a thing" because in my area they exist as like. non-school stuff like at the sports center or whatever but not at actual schools. I've never been to a high school with a pool but presumably they do exist somewhere

I think when the Mahri stuff hits, honestly they just become even weirder. They were already weird as Toa go with the glowing eyes and the lightning thing but now they have, like, gills? Some of them have scales? Kongu's been trying to grow out his beard and for some reason it's got a weird chitinous texture? Jaller has made friends with a crab? Wait, aren't those invasive here?

Who's your favorite Toa Mata / Nuva?

Ooooh that's a tricky question. Hand on heart, my main interaction with the Toa Mata is through a) Mask of Light (in which they're very much not the main characters, as much as they are interactive set pieces for the MCs) and b) fandom posts (which are varying levels of canon) sooooo I'm less familiar with them than I am the Toa Metru

BUT I have a soft spot for Pohatu, since he's so affable in MoL, hilariously so when he's thrown into the same scene as, say, Tahu or Kopaka. Maybe my fav will change when I read more of the canon, but for now: <3 Pohatu and his good nature

Also a shoutout to @magicalgirlmascot 's depiction of Tahu; she writes him with such a good voice/style in her knps au, that his POV is one of my favs even though he's not a fav in canon

umm so in your school bionicle au at some point do the toa do a magical girl transformation or some transformation also your fanfic is really amazing!

ghfjkg I was soooooo tempted to give them one when they first used their powers on the bear in the gym, but I decided not to because I felt like it would've changed the tone of the story too much. Like. As much as I love magical girls more than my own life (hence the username) I didn't want KNPS to wind up being straight up a Power Rangers story, you know? I thought it would make it just a little too goofy, especially in the moment. Plus I wouldn't want to have it so the characters can only use their powers when they're transformed (I know plenty of mg series don't have this as the case, Mahou Tsukai PreCure and W.I.T.C.H. come to mind, but that is kind of the stereotype) and I wasn't sure where the distinction would be for when they did and didn't transform. Only to keep their identities secret, maybe? But I also wanted the secrecy to be a constant struggle. Yeah.

I did give them magical girl transformations in a super old human!Bonkles fic that I wrote in college but that's neither here nor there

My take on the Turaga Nui, from Shauni's (@legend-as-old-as-time) WIP fic set in Rags' (@magicalgirlmascot ) KNPS AU. Snippets of the fic here and here.

In which the Turaga form a fusion in order to defeat the Rahi Nui, but their past experience with the Hordika venom results in the Turaga Nui taking on a somewhat ...unexpected form. After the battle, the Toa Mata catch up with them. Pictured here is Lewa having the appropriate reaction to finding out his six mentors have turned into some kind of weird dragon-chimera-kaiju thing.

Some design notes under the cut:

The Turaga Nui's form combines traits from the forms the Metru had as Toa Hordika, known in this universe as the Kini Nui werebeasts. So, this was my take on them individually here:

(The Metru's human forms can be seen here) I hope it's fairly self explanatory which features come from which werebeast, but a few other fun design notes...

So, in KNPS, the Toa Kaita look a lot like the Steven Universe fusions, with extra eyes and limbs. The Turaga Nui follows a similar logic but on a more bestial body layout.

The top two arms are the most humanoid, as TN signs in ASL as well as speaking aloud whenever it is practical to do so (i.e. when there is not a Toa of Air attached to their neck). The next two pairs of limbs can function either as arms or forelegs, so the digits are more paw-like.

The wings are obviously based on a snowy owl and come from Nuju's werebeast form. Male snowy owls typically have lighter coloured plumage while females have prominent black bars on their feathers. Nuju in particular would probably have been almost completely white as a werebeast given he's an ice Toa and has white hair in human form. The Turaga Nui, however, is composed of five men and one woman, so I gave them a small amount of barring on the tips of one wing while the other is plain white. (The bars also help tie it back to the badger stripes on their face from a design standpoint)

The Kaita have metallic gold or silver skin, I suggested black and white patterns for TN's colour scheme to make them visibly nonhuman but also distinct from the Kaita.

Shauni felt that there should be more accents of each element's colours, however, so we decided on the "black" scales actually having an iridescent sheen to them.

I'd already been planning to give TN spots similar to that of a newt, but didn't realise until I started doing it that white spots on black combined with the iridescent colours gives the impression of a night sky/galaxy pattern.

I had previously suggested the name "Tien" to Shauni (Turaga Nui = T.N. Said aloud it phonetically sounds like "Tien"). Turns out Shauni had the exact same thought. Furthermore, it's a name in several cultures, various meanings include "heavenly being", "celestial" and "sky" (An etymologically related name is the Chinese "Tianlong", which means "Celestial Dragon")

So, accidentally coming up with a name that means "celestial" and then accidentally making them look like a living galaxy was a fun coincidence.

Also, apparently one of Rags' favourite DBZ characters was named Tien, so that was a plus for her!

The tail has owl feathers but is structurally more similar to the tail of an aquatic newt.

The eyes are based on the Turaga's animal forms but the colours come from their eye-glow. The three eyes visible in the image are Vakama's (green), Matau's (red), and Onewa's (blue)

As previous;y mentioned, photographs of jumping ferrets helped in drawing the dragon's limbs . I also ended up referencing hairless cats to get a handle on what the paws would look like with no fur.

I did do a version that shows the full body pose, which I quite liked, but felt that the cropped composition above was better to show the character details given tumblr's scrolling format

Writing an oneshot with the Turaga Nui in the KNPS AU and I'm getting smacked over the head repeatedly with the angst bat.

Like the moment the Turaga Nui (TN) is close back to Kini Nui and they meet up with Lewa and Pohatu who are the fastest to find them. And both of them are still, staring up at them, looking shaken. TN is worried because they expected that at least Lewa would be excited. But then, the two of them might have seen them being attacked by the Rahi Nui just as they were fusing. And they're not fusions like Wairuha or Akamai.

They are also a little more than scuffed from their battle with the Rahi Nui.

(A "little" scuffed?!)

It's good that they've showered in the forest. Or they'd look even more ghastly if their blood and that of the Rahi Nui was still on them.

Still, this is wrong. The two of them shouldn't look like that. So for lack of a better idea, TN says, "What's with the long face, Windsprite? I thought you like furry-fusions?"

(Onewa within the fusion: *facepalming*)

Because while TN currently is a beastly chimera, they're also made of six dorks, so they're one Huge Dork.

Lewa splutters, "Matau?!"

TN snorts. "In a sense. I am to Matau what Wairuha is to you, little Windsprite. Just twice the numbers of little siblings involved."

"So there's Onewa with you, too?" And that's Pohatu, hopping from foot to foot, equally anxious, and TN has an idea what they worry about. What they might fear. They sit back on their haunches, all six of their eyes focused on the two toa.

"We are Onewa and Matau. We are Whenua, and Nokama, and Vakama, and Nuju. They're all here with us. They can hear you. They'll be with you again once we unfuse."

That seems to be the wrong thing to say, as Lewa cries.

Or maybe it is the right thing to say, as a green blur speeds forward and they catch him in their arms as he clings to their neck.

"Careful, Windsprite." They rumble, holding him firmly despite their words. His energy envelops them in gusts of air. He smells clean, of soap and shampoo and water. No blood or dust remaining. "Our skin is not like Wairuha's at the moment. We're not soft."

"Don't care. You're here-" Lewa babbles, so TN does their best to guide his face to a patch of fur on their neck.

The shower was definitely a good idea.

Im curious about your posts on Dream SMP. It sounds really interesting but I cant seem to find any guides on the story? And I dont have the time/focus to listen to all the streams 1by1. Do you have any suggestions on where I could learn about the story?

Oh my, that's a bit of a loaded question. Well, I recommend checking out this post on the subject first and foremost for a quick summary of what it is and all. The story is a convoluted mess, though, it's true, and ain't NOBODY got time to watch all the VODs, not even if you dedicated the next couple years exclusively to it, there's just too much content. Nah, tbh, I'd just recommend watching the fan animations and animatics if you're at all interested in dipping your toe into the fandom to see what all the fuss is about, picking your faves, and then sticking mostly with their storylines, because there's too much content to catch up with otherwise. I WOULD recommend the wiki and such, but the wiki is honestly awful and extremely biased in favor of some characters, so I'd recommend steering clear of those. And, if you have the time or inclination to see me gradually devolve into madness over the course of 9 months, you can check out my DSMP tag and discover the series and its characters alongside me. Obviously, when it comes to characters I favor, I'm biased, but in a series like this where literally all the characters are main characters, that's kind of unavoidable. 😅I'll leave you with few of my favorite animatics from the fandom.

Hog Hunt by SAD-ist was the first piece of DSMP media I ever saw. Had no idea what it was when YT recommended it to me, but it had 3M views, so I figured it was probably decent. Would recommend the rest of her DSMP stuff as well, it's all VERY good.

This animatic consolidates basically all the lore up to a certain point for c!BadBoyHalo into a single video, it's pretty impressive just how much information they were able to feasibly squeeze into this thing.

This is one of the animatics that was recced to me before I got into the fandom and partially made me interested in checking out more animatics. This is a summary of c!GeorgeNotFound lore, and it's very well done.

Krahka warns Hahli that there are some powerful beings in the world that can't be emulated or copied with shapeshifting, and that she's gonna have A Bad Time if she tries. Such beings include Kaita, Makuta, and the school janitors. (No, Krahka does not know what their deal is. All she knows is that she Does Not Want To Know.)

Hahli obviously thinks she's joking at first. The first two make sense, of course, but Cahdok and Gahdok? The custodians? What, do they have special cleaning powers or something? Come on, Krahka.

She makes the mistake of shifting into one of them once. She shifted back immediately and refuses to talk about the experience.
