Okay so I would have done everything pretty much the same up until graduation, I wouldn’t have had Klaus make his ‘However long it takes’ speech to Caroline at that point.

Now hear me out, I know it’s iconic and has pretty much kept the Klaroline ship afloat for the last five years but if you think about it, it was kind of a cop out, just like 5x11 was. It was the writer’s way of saying ‘Were not shutting down this ship for good like it’s a thing we just can be bothered to write it into the actual narrative right now’.

All throughout season 4 Klaroline were building up to a friendship, several times it was demonstrated that they were equally matched, the whole ‘Were the same Caroline’ and Caroline demanding that Klaus set Tyler free and turning his words against him. Plus when she manipulated him into healing her. Then there were all the scenes both with Klaus and Caroline by themselves and the Klefaroline ones where their working together and flirting and bickering and having actual conversations (solving the cryptex, the conversation in the woods, the map scene, burying the 12 witches, ‘we all want the cure’ etc) instead of just Klaus spinning pretty words like he was in season 3.

Then there were the actual acts of friendship (ish) like Caroline reluctantly pulling the nonexistent stake splinters from Klaus’ back and then Klaus giving her that meek little ‘friends then?’ line (and by the way that was another excellent example of Caroline using her agency and levelling the playing field because she totally makes him suffer, refuses to help him without something in return, goes head to head in a screaming match with him without backing down and once he asks if they can be friends she still uses it as an opportunity to bargain for Tyler); there’s the dress in 4x18 that Klaus supplies free of charge and them - what antis like to conveniently forget - Klaus was invited to Caroline’s graduation and was also her first point of contact when she needed help.

I would’ve have continued that tenuous rocky friendship dynamic while also slow burning the romance between them. 4x23 would have ended with Klaus setting Tyler free, with more or less the same dialogue and the two of the walking off together arm in arm. Maybe I’d have Klaus say something cocky like ‘He’s your first love… but he won’t be your last’ not as dramatic but still hinting at something in the future.

In Season 5 Caroline would go to Whitfield with Bonnie and Elena. Elena’s little voice over in 5x01 would consist of her saying that Caroline and Tyler attempted to make it work over the summer but eventually broke it off and now Tyler’s mentoring some pack or another (I’d make season 4 a slow breakdown of F*rwood’s relationship so it would make sense) then while Elena’s monologing I’d have Caroline come into her room and find a mini fridge with a bow on it inside (cue the eye roll and tiny little smile).

Klaroline would communicate frequently during s5 and Klaus becomes somewhat of a confidant for Caroline, there is flirting (of course) and Klaus gives her a lot of advice especially when supernatural shenanigans occur in MF. Of course, her secret phone calls are top secret from Bonnie or Elena who would judge the living daylights out of her. Caroline starts dating Jesse in season 5 not 6 at Bolena’s insistence since she hasn’t been with anyone since Tyler, he’s a nice guy and Caroline likes him a lot but Caroline realises she cannot balance having the two men in her life (especially when Jesse starts asking questions ‘Who’s this Klaus guy that keeps calling you) so she effectively breaks things off with Klaus and asks him not to contact her anymore.

I can imagine him complying but still having his hybrids goons lurking about to keep tabs on her. Caroline wises up and leaves him a scathing voice message about it. Eventually, she and Jesse break up.

When he appears in 5x11 she is livid because this is totally not respecting her boundaries. Klaus tells her he heard about her and Jesse’s breakup and it ends with her giving him the whole ‘I’m building a life for myself’ speech and him asking for her confession and promising to leave and never return. Cue the whole sex montage.

I’d have Caroline confess to Katherine!Elena who swears not to tell anyone but then texts Bonnie behind Caroline’s back and tells her to start drama and to cause a distraction so Katherine can be Katherine. The scooby gang attempt at slut shaming Caroline and she claps back at them but is still pretty upset after and so Stefan goes after her and they bond over being attracted to terrible people.

Klaus sends Caroline a letter sometime after that and promises once again to stay away but leaves a first class ticket to New Orleans inside of it and says he will wait for her her to be ready. Then I’d drop the ‘However long it takes’ line.

In season 6 Caroline would be very restless, unsatisfied with the mundane routiness of school, combined with seeing everyone becoming adjusted and living good lives (Stefan Elena would be together - see my Stelena post here, and deliberating on whether or not to take the cure, Matt would be graduating cop school, Tyler would return and give college a shot, start dating Liv and playing sports again, plus Jo and Alaric’s wedding and pregnancy) if I had my way Bonnie being trapped in the prison world would be an accident (no self-sacrificing Bonnie over here) and Caroline would throw all her energy into finding a solution instead of Dullena ft Jeremy on the case, Caroline, Alaric and Stelena would work on getting her back.

Once Bonnie was brought back safely from the prison world Caroline would once again be at a loss. Thanks to an appearance from Kai - (see my Bonkai post here) Caroline decides that small town life isn’t enough for her so she decides to take up Klaus’ offer and go to New Orleans. I would have had Bonnie confess to Caroline after returning from the prison world about having complicated feelings for Kai so when Caroline asks Bonnie to come with her Bonnie is sceptical but not judgemental.

Eventually Bonnie agrees and they go and that would be the conclusion to tvd. As for to THERE WOULD BE NO BABY PLOT WHATSOEVER. Haley’s baby story would be a lie the witches of New Orleans conjured up in order to lure Klaus to The French Quarter so that they could use Klaus to get rid of Marcel. So when Caroline arrives Klaus is duty-free ;). At first, Caroline is elusive but eventually, they work their way towards a relationship. Kol, Rebekah, Finn, Freya, Elijah, Sage, Enzo, Bonnie, Katherine, Marcel and Davina are all part of the main cast and shenanigans occur.

After several seasons and one conquered empire with Klaroline as King and Queen of New Orleans I’d have Caroline tell Klaus she wants a change of scenery and ask him to make good on his promise to show her the world. There’d probably be some final conflict that stops them from leaving eventually but at the season finale I’d have Klaus leave the city to Marcel once again and Klaroline take off on a private jet and the last scene would be them sipping on expensive champagne (because that’s their thing) and have Klaus turn to Caroline ask her where she wants to go. Caroline would teasingly shrug and reply ‘I don’t know, Rome, Paris, Tokyo. It doesn’t matter’ and then she’d lean in ‘As long as I’m with you’

They’d kiss and just because this is the vampire genre and it really should be too sappy and be a littler gothic. I’d have Klaus bite into Caroline’s wrist (because blood sharing is defo another one of their ‘things’) and Caroline smile wickedly at him. I’d then cut to a scene with the rest of the Mikaelson’s all bickering over a meal or something. Then I’d cut back to Caroline her eyes would go all vampiry and she’d bite into Klaus’s neck.

The final shot would be Caroline’s eyes while she’s feeding (symbolising her true embracing of vampirism) and then the screen would cut to The Originals title card.
