Tell me a story… A long time ago in the Qing Dynasty a young soldier fell in love with a handsome official and was sentenced to death for confessing his longing. When his spirit travelled to the Underworld the soldier’s crime was forgiven as one of passion and he was ordained The Rabbit God, the god of secret lovers. The god now travels through eternity answering prayers of forbidden love.

This short film captivated me from beginning to end. The contrast between the hustle and bustle of current reality and the mental world where God and mortal meet is well done and left myself restless, too.

Our protagonist is working his ass off in a restaurant seemingly 24/7. One day a crimson-haired stranger shows up who immediately catches our protagonist's attention. After closing time, he visits him again and our protagonist allows himself to indulge his cravings for a brief moment until he comes to his senses again and pushes the stranger away.

The next night, the stranger visits our protagonist again. Called by the protagonist's forbidden love, the stranger can't help but come to him and show our protagonist a way to free himself from society's chains.

Coming out, finding ones true self, forgiving oneself takes strength and can be very painful, yet freeing. It should come from the person alone. Others can help and support, but everyone should take the step themselves when they are ready. Only then can one become one's own god and no longer move through life determined by others. Just as the soldier was ordained to be the god of secret love, he now ordaines the suffering, secretly loving ones to be their own gods and gives them the power to be themselves, if they are ready. And like our protagonist, many are prepared to take that step with their bags packed, but sometimes still need a supporting hand to assist them for the final step.

The symbolism in this short film is strong. In almost every other scene there is something that could be analysed in depth. Especially the kiss at the end of the film touched me. It represents our protagonist accepting himself as he is and warmly welcoming and appreciating this new self.

For me it is a 10 out of 10.
