Tawan (Ep9)

What drives me crazy about this scene isn’t just the heartbroken (pleading?) expression on Kinn’s face or the soft way Porsche says Kinn’s name, it’s the way Tawan squeezes Kinn’s shoulder, as if he understands what he’s going through even though he was the whole reason Kinn felt betrayed in the first place. He holds this soft expression and if I didn’t know any better, I’d say he actually means it. But we know as the audience that Tawan is able to flip his expressions on a dime, transitioning from sick and feeble to smug and calculated in only a few scenes.

To Tawan, this expression is part of the plan. But based on my own interpretation, I believe that it is also part of Kinn’s plan. Porsche worked himself into a hole after getting himself exposed, so this is Kinn’s way of cleaning it up. Someone on Twitter pointed out how this scene is similar to the scene where Kinn choked Porsche in Ep2 and I couldn’t agree more. Is “betraying” your lover to protect them considered a trope? Well, if it is, it’s one of my favorites.

I think a lot of this scene comes down to this: Tawan needs to feel like he’s in control if Kinn is going to be able to take him down. Tawan managed to survive after Kinn shot him (somehow), so taking him out will surely require some deft moves. Let’s also not forget the impression that imprisoning Porsche leaves on the other bodyguards--if Kinn let him off without any kind of punishment, it would look like special treatment. This is a way of keeping the other bodyguards in check, while also obeying Korn’s instructions about staying away from Porsche (which we obviously know he isn’t, but he can act like he is).

While Vegas knows how to capitalize on Kinn’s insecurities, Tawan tries to act as if he was never responsible for those insecurities in the first place. I think Tawan’s smugness this episode shows that he knows just how much his betrayal messed Kinn up. It’s exactly the reason why he reminded Kinn of their relationship so early in the episode. He was testing the waters, determining his approach. When Kinn admitted how much the relationship meant to him, it solidified Tawan’s course of action. 

Finally, Kinn and Porsche hardly have any scenes together this episode. During my first watch-through, I remember thinking that they seemed fairly distant from each other. Again, I think it’s intentionally illustrating how the problems in Kinn and Porsche’s relationships are solely external. I just wonder if, while in the cell, Porsche figured out that maybe Kinn’s actions have a bigger motive than he can see.

I don't read kinnporsche tag since ep9 has been aired cuz writers ruined so much in order to add more drama and make a "wow" effect that I lost interest in the series very quickly. Surprisingly quickly, to be honest, considering my previous anticipation and awe. It's amazing how much you can ruin (logic, storytelling, ambiance) with only one episode. So I don't know what fandom's reacton was after ep9 but based on the experience after ep5 and ep7 I'm pretty sure everyone was angry at Kinn again (and Porsche was right, of course). I already said that, for me, Kinn did nothing wrong, except for this ridiculous flirt with Tawan at the beginning (logic bye). Same thing for ep10 - Kinn did nothing wrong, he was following his plan but Porsche decided to run away with Vegas (L.O.L.) so Kinn didn't have time to tell Porsche that. So how come that Kinn is a bad guy again? When will Porsche grow fucking up? When will they both start communicating? I have a feeling that we're going in circles. And no wonder they'll point guns at each other again, maybe not even once - considering their inability to freaking talk to each other, like properly (and not - "you don't trust me" - I'll kiss you in response cuz... yeah, why bother) and Porsche's dumb plans, it's a miracle they won't shoot each other. I haven't read the novel but pretty sure it will be Porsche again who'll be responsible for their next fight (but ofc everyone will blame Kinn, it's daily routine).

So yeah, now I'm disappointed in KinnPorsche and it's rather sad cuz first 8 episodes were such a roller-coaster, in a good way, that I didn't expect ep9 and 10 to be that illogical. I'm not even waiting for a pool scene now cuz it doesn't feel like their love confession anymore (as it was supposed to be). They have too many issues to resolve to talk about love. The only way I see this scene is in the finale, when Porsche finally admits all the things he did wrong and they both promise to start fucking communicating (that will never happen, ofc, but still, I guess this scene will be in ep14, not earlier). So, we'll see.

(the only thing I'm glad about though - Kinn told Porsche to apologize, like WOW! YEAH! FINALLY! ofc Porsche decided that hell no, he's too good to apologize (he really doesn't see what he did wrong, does he?), but Kinn, my baby, finally you stand up for yourself).

Arcs & Ep9

Disclaimer: If all of my predictions turn out wrong, pretend you never saw this.

I’ve discussed this a bit in the past, but KP has laid out smaller arcs in the grander scheme of the KP relationship plot over the last few episodes. The strongest comparisons can be made between Ep6 and Ep8 and, as a hypothesis, Ep7 and Ep9. It’s no coincidence that Ep6 and 8 have a similar tone. By the look of things, Ep9 will be similar to Ep7 as well. This lays out a pattern for KP’s mini-arc, which I provide a rough outline for in this post. If I was to make a not-so-bold prediction, I would guess that the next few episodes will present a series of growing conflicts and resolutions in KP’s relationship. Vegas’s seed of mistrust was the first one in Ep 7 (I say the first one because Ep7 is the first episode in which KP are in what appears to be a committed relationship) and the second one arises with Tawan’s reappearance in Ep9. I think we will see a resolution in the Tawan conflict rather quickly, but it will make way for even larger issues that will be laid out in Ep10. Regardless of specifics, we can safely assume that everything will escalate to Porsche’s leaving Kinn and, in doing so, separating himself from the mafia world. 

I’d like to think that the second half of KinnPorsche’s relationship arc will be centered around the actual mafia aspect of the show. So far, we’ve seen the characters reacting to their mafia environment--especially Kinn, who we watch try and fail at suppressing his feelings precisely because of the world he was born into--but the relationship drama over the last few episodes has largely been about more personal matters. Ep7 saw Vegas weaseling his way between Kinn and Porsche to create mistrust. Ep9 will see Tawan doing something similar. The direct involvement of both Vegas and Tawan makes it all feel very personal rather than strictly external. As I think we’ve already seen, the external mafia drama will (presumably) align closely with Kinn and Porsche’s relationship drama. They’ve already planted the seeds, but we’ve yet to see it fully pan out.

Seeds & Theories

There are two main seeds that I see being planted here. Both likely involve Vegas and Tawan to a certain extent, but this extent reaches far beyond the conflict they’ve already stirred up. 

Porsche’s Parentage:

We have several clues so far that indicate that Porsche’s parentage will make up a significant portion of the mafia plot. Everybody is interested in him for reasons other than his stellar personality and attractiveness, Korn most of all. Kim will likely merge with the main characters as he uncovers more substantial information about Porsche and his parent’s involvement in the mafia but please God, don’t let Kinn and Porsche be related. Everything will start to overlap and secrets will be revealed that have been merely hinted at up to this point.

How does this create tension between Kinn and Porsche? I suspect miscommunication and misunderstandings will abound, particularly when it comes to how much Kinn knows about Porsche’s parentage. A big information bomb will be dropped on Porsche, and he will convince himself that Kinn must’ve known about it. Kinn will object, say there’s no way he’d do that to him, Porsche will say he never really knew him at all, and he’ll go running. These are all predictions at this point, but I think we’ve been set up to go this route based on the mistrust Kinn and Porsche have already had in their relationship and the seeds planted about Porsche’s family.

Rivalry between families:

This is where Vegas becomes much more involved. His sly attempts at unseating Kinn will culminate in an all-out war, as I suspect we see in the battle-dancing scene from the trailer. It seems like they are facing off against the second family here, but there’s clearly some animosity between the two of them that they need to clear up before the thick of the battle (could be wrong about the order of scenes, but that’s what I’m predicting).

I think the show will flip the concept of mistrust on its head a bit. We’ve seen how hard it is for Kinn to trust others as a result of his relationship with Tawan, but I think it would be interesting to see Porsche’s mistrust take the forefront. We’ve already seen this a bit with the ending of Ep4 and the consequences in Ep5, but I want to see how it plays out when KP are in an established relationship. The first part of the season seemed more dedicated to highlighting Kinn’s struggles in his relationship with Porsche, but I think the second half will focus much more on how those same issues affect Porsche. Not to say that Porsche hasn’t faced challenges already in his relationship with Kinn, but I do think Porsche's struggles in this latter half will mirror Kinn’s struggles in the first half.

I would bet that we will be seeing arcs that mirror those seen earlier in the season; the show has already set up mirroring conflicts/resolutions in episodes 5 & 7 and 6 & 8, respectively. Soon, I think these conflicts will become much more external to the mafia conflict (which will inevitably bleed over into KP’s relationship). All the storylines will converge on each other as a final test of sorts for KP to face together as a united front. First, though, we must work through the Tawan issue in order to fully earn the “us against the world” mentality the show has been marketing/building to. In my opinion, the conflict ultimately becomes much richer when the characters experience trials after they’ve already worked through something major (*cough* Tawan). It shows that they are capable of overcoming obstacles, but at the same time, it leaves audiences on edge to see if this is the time it’s gone too far.

The show has made a point of indicating that the problems Kinn and Porsche are facing right now, while catastrophic for their relationship, are no where near as catastrophic as they could and likely will be.

Well, I didn't think I would write another KinnPorsche meta any time soon since lately the series has brought me nothing but disappointment (damn you ep9, it all has started from you). But the fact that fans seriously compare Kinn's behaviour in ep9&10 and Porsche's in ep13 baffles me so I just couldn't help myself.

Let me be clear - for me, Kinn did NOTHING wrong in ep9&10. Absolutely nothing. Except for moronic flirt with Tawan at the beginning but here I blame writers (they've been doing a shitty job lately, and ep9 is exactly when it all started) cuz it was completely out of character. Everything else is absolutely fine with me, so if you don't agree please skip this meta, you won't find anything interesting here.

Let's recall everything Kinn's been accused of:

You brought you ex into the house.

Well, Porsche, don't wanna upset you but it wasn't some relationship stuff Kinn was dealing with. He brought the traitor into his family's house. Not yours and Kinn's house. Mafia's house. It was family business, Kinn decided to leave him here because of this mafia stuff and it had nothing to do with you as boyfriend. Do I think that it's incredibly stupid that Kinn and Porsche didn't have even one proper conversation about Tawan during the whole episode? Yes. Do I think that Porsche should've come to Kinn and simply ASKED what's going on instead of spying on him? Yes. Screenwriters fucked up a lot, cuz after all lovey-dovey ep8 this lack of communication looks like a stupid tool for draaamaaaa out of nowhere. But still, this "you brought your ex" argument is incredibly stupid. It wasn't ex, it was traitor. See a bigger picture, Porsche.

2. You locked me in the basement.

Well... what else should Kinn have done? You were caught red-handed, spying on Tawan simply cuz you didn't consider it necessary to talk to Kinn and decided to play Agent 007 instead. Kinn trusted you, for sure, and ofc he didn't believe that you were a spy or smth, but let's not forget that Tawan was there too and Tawan had to be assured that everything was going according to his plan. Kinn was ready to set you free but you decided to run away with Vegas :))) And we do remember that Porsche ran away without having any plan. I've seen some posts like "sure Porsche has a plan" but the funniest and dumbest part is that he didn't. He didn't have a fucking plan. He didn't think Vegas is evil, he didn't know how he's gonna confront Tawan. He simply ran away from Kinn because he trusted Vegas AGAIN. So when he says...

3. You never trust me.

... I was like - do we have to? You make it so easy not to trust you. You were fooled by Vegas for the 3d? 4th? 5th time? I lost count. Fans were so eager to believe that Porsche was witty and always one step ahead of Vegas (like in ep7 or ep9, I remember these theories) but sad truth - he was not. I don't know why screenwriters made Porsche so dumb but I'm extremely disappointed.

So yeah, all these accusations in ep10 were total bullshit but still somehow Kinn was a bad guy there. Well, okay, I almost made my peace with that.

But ep13 has nothing in common with ep9&10. Okay, I can get that Porsche was worried about Kinn's reaction if he found out the truth about Korn. Seriously, I get that. But how can he doubt Kinn?! Porsche really said "I can't trust anyone in the main family?" Seriously? Then why this "I love you" has been even said? Out of pity? Or it was his plan as well? Kinn didn't doubt Porsche in ep9&10. Porsche in ep13 did.

But of course the worst part is Porsche trusting Vegas over Kinn again. Yes, he uses him as a tool, yes they're not best friends, but still somehow Porsche is certain that Vegas can be trusted more than Kinn (cuz he's the only one who "can't be bought by the main family"). So yeah, well, you have every right not to trust Kinn, he's from mafia family, he lied to you several times, he wasn't a nice person at the beginning (though for me Kinn was a perfect boss even in the first episodes - we do remember Porsche's behaviour there, right). You don't trust him - okay, your choice. But don't you dare then say anything about "love". This is not love. Nothing close. You know, here I remembered one conversation between Clark and Lois from "Smallville". Clark went to the suicide mission and didn't tell Lois anything trying to protect her. And Lois there said very wise words:

"You're a part of me now, Clark. A half of the whole. So in the future, if there's even a chance that the mission might claim my better half, sign me up. Because I'd rather be in some sandblown purgatory with you than in the hell of never knowing if I'll ever see you again"

So, well, Porsche, if you really do love this man, there's something for you to think about.

I do get that Porsche is supposed to be in love with Kinn and ofc I don't believe in evil love plot or smth like that, they will get their happy ending. And you know, ep13 showed me Porsche's feelings even better than ep8 - he was so tender with Kinn, he was torn between his wish to tell the truth and his own doubts, I actually believed that he's in love with Kinn. But this atrocious plot with choosing Vegas over Kinn and "I can't trust anyone in the main family" got me so irritated, I just can't. Screenwriters are absolutely inconsistent in writing Porsche's character that's why I'm extremely disappointed in the second half of the series. Maybe the last episode will make things a bit better (I sincerely hope so) but this will not change the fact that KinnPorsche had so much potential and they could've been so much more if these novel (I guess) plotholes had been corrected in the series.
