📢 Vi mancano i production shenanigan di Shirobako? Ci pensa Mappa (Zombie Land Saga, Re-Main) con ZENSHU!
La nuova serie originale dello studio, nata dalle menti di Mitsue Yamasaki (Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle, Tada Never Falls in Love) e Kimiko Ueno (Dungeon Food, Astro Note), avrà come protagonista una giovane, geniale e alquanto stramba regista alle prese con una commedia romantica. Il problema? Lei non si è ancora mai innamorata. Mi sa che ne vedremo delle belle!

Dungeon Meshi Episode 7 was super interesting from an adaptation standpoint - this'll be a little different from what I usually write about (though I do still talk about the animation in the full video).
Tumblr media
Studio Trigger have never done a straight-up manga adaptation before - and led by Yoshihiro Miyajima, a big fan of the manga who pushed hard for the adaptation to get made, and who has never directed a full series before, it was unclear if they'd be able to find the right balance between a simple panel-for-panel recreation and making something that's completely different.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And in the first few episodes, you could really feel the tension between the influence of a cautious young creative with great respect for the source material, and a studio with a unique established visual style. It kinda seemed like they were ping-ponging willy-nillily between the two sides of that spectrum.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But this episode showed that Miyajima (and series writer Kimiko Ueno) can take 3 chapters, slice them up and rearrange them into a cohesive-feeling episode while taking into account the differences between screen and page, and using them to their advantage.
Starting with the way the water looks. This line from the manga describes a faint magical glow to the water in this lake and you can see that the cavern fades into darkness above, but Kui's illustration style doesn't really define lighting and shadows very much compared to the cel-drawing style of animation. So the animators took the opportunity to use the water as the light source, and make a whole episode that's lit almost entirely from below. It really gives an otherworldly feeling to this area.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Particularly when the Kelpie shows up, that under-lighting works wonders to define its anatomy within the relatively simple line art.
Tumblr media
What do you do when you can't show the immense fuck-off scale of a monster with a beautiful full-page spread like this?
Well you use what you do have: the ability to move the camera instead. This is such a great way to communicate the scale of this thing, AND such a great way to show some of Senshi's anime-original butt-cheeks!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is one of my favorite shots from this episode - this whole sequence is super hectic, cutting quickly from character to character, but they use tricks like this to keep you from getting confused. This is framed much like it is in the manga, but with the moving image, they're able to use the trajectory of the fish head in the background to lead your eye directly from Chilchuck, right to the point where Senshi pops up in the foreground and transition seamlessly from one character to another!
Tumblr media
Now, it's not all good - I am a bit disappointed that they removed Marcille's own Senshi-style soap-making montage, which was the perfect visual representation of the culmination of the character development and understanding built between Senshi and Marcille.
Tumblr media
It's a shame to see it go.
I get more into that, what else was cut, and much more in this video where I broke down the entire episode!
Check it out if you feel like it. If you don't, jump in a ditch, cover yourself in leaves and jump out at people as they walk by.
Thanks for reading!

General writer notes:
Dai Sato is the main writer and the one who handles the series composition (some clarification here).
Kureha Matsuzawa, so far, is the most prolific writer of individual episodes (12 episodes written as of the end of chapter 2). He is also listed as the script coordinator of the series.
As of chapter 2, two script writers joined (Naohiro Fukushima and Kimiko Ueno).
Chapter 1 has the most episodes written by the core writers.
---
Chapters opening and climax:
Chapter 1's debut episodes (HZ001 and HZ002) and climax (HZ024 and HZ025) were written by Dai Sato (main writer).
Chapter 2's debut episode (HZ026) and climax (HZ044 and HZ045) were written by Kureha Matsuzawa (script coordinator).

So far, he seems to be the writer handling the episodes with the Six Heroes joining the group and the Lucius appearances.
However, the build up episodes introducing the Six Heroes can be handled by other writers. The episode which introduced Oliva in the forest (HZ011) was written by Naruki Nagakawa. The episode which introduced Galar Fire in the mines (HZ022) was written by Muga Takeda.
The episode with Terapagos appearing for the first time (HZ001, HZ002), the episodes showing Terapagos's true form in Lucius's memoirs and with Terapagos reacting to Amethio (HZ024), the episode showing Terapagos's Terastal form (HZ033) were written by Dai Sato.
The episodes with Rayquaza coming out of Roy's Ancient Pokeball (HZ006), showing up at the end of the episode in which Lapras joined the group (HZ032), and appearing in the climax of chapter 2 (HZ044, HZ045) were written by Kureha Matsuzawa. The episode with Rayquaza battling Terapagos (HZ033) was written by Dai Sato.
The Explorers episodes (with the characters from the organization physically appearing), so far, are exclusively written by the core writers.

Hiii! I hope that you're having a day. I won't say good because of all that happens in the world, it cannot be a good day for anyone who cares.
In the midst of all this, between staying informed and sharing what I know, I'm looking for a bit of a temporary solace through roleplay.
Could you please share with me your favorite short-haired Japanese women? Any age, but 30+ would be appreciated! Thanks a lot.
And if you can't, that is perfectly fine.
I hope your day goes on alright, and that everyone you meet masks up and cares as much as you do.

Today's translation #39
Back to Sayo's interviews!
I don't know why I haven't noticed it before but the very first Sayo's interview from Pash! 05/2017 is exactly the same interview that is included in Go Yuri Go!!! official fanbook. There are however two additional questions, so I translated them as an appendix to the fanbook interview.
Q: Please tell us about the live reading event [Yuri!!! on Stage] that is scheduled for April 29th!
Me and Kubo-san has compiled ideas for the story, but I managed to get Ueno Kimiko-san to write the screenplay for us - even among all my colleagues, she's the person who can write the craziest stories. We have worked together on Space☆Dandy (2014), but I heard she's watched Yuri!!! and enjoyed it until the end. I think the event's story is probably going to be wild (laugh).
Q: Please tell us also about what are we going to see from Yuri!!! in the future.
The extra footage added to the last DVD/Blu-ray and Kubo-san's manga, a bonus for those who bought all DVDs/Blu-rays are amazing! You'll hear about the details very soon, but I think especially fans of Yurio and Otabek will be very happy. Also, we added footage of voice over recording of Stephane Lambiel who appeared in the last episode. This is a very precious footage taken by me with an iPad during voice over recording! Hiramatsu Tadashi-san (character design, animation director) and Ito Noriko-san (animation supervisor) are currently working very hard on making revisions to the last two episodes and are redrawing an absurd number of frames. There isn't even a single Victor frame where he doesn't look beautiful in the DVD/Blu-ray version. In general, this version is quite well brushed up! Also, there are moments when the relationships between characters may perhaps seem a bit different in this version. So if you are still wondering if you should get it, I'd say you should! Thank you very much!
(Notes:
Quite funny how much Sayo was avoiding interviews! Her interview from Febri is also used like at least 3 times in 3 different places… xD
Of course she was ultra busy - majority of YoI fandom seems to think Kubo is the main creator of the show, but Kubo herself said that she didn't participate that much in the process of actually animating the final version of the show…
Still, if you ask me it's quite clear Sayo wasn't very thrilled to talk to otaku magazines lol. The longer, more in-depth interviews were published in much more fancy art/culture kind of magazines (Febri, Kikan Esu). The Pash! interview was published in April 2017, and first Kubo interview is from September 2016… It means Sayo managed to avoid giving any interviews for around 7 months XD
I love her sm ✨)

Some observations on the writers of the upcoming episodes of the anime, to keep track of things. Vague mention of what happens in upcoming episodes but it's nothing we haven't seen in the new year previews. Though if you don't want to know things happen in which order, don't read below!
Two of the upcoming episodes's screenplays (HZ036 and HZ039) are handled by the same person. Naohiro Fukushima had never worked on the anime before and the first episode he worked on was HZ029 (the Orio and Karna episode). Given how HZ036 and HZ039 will have a focus on Dot on some level (or at least from how things look right now, ep 36 seems more about the kids in general, though it's Dot who received a request from a listener) and are written by the same person, I wonder if HZ036 will set up something for Dot that will have a payoff in HZ039? I am interested in seeing how Dot will be in Naohiro Fukushima's episodes though! And I wonder if he'll focus on Orio again in the future.
Also, interestingly, Naohiro Fukushima and Dai Sato (the one who handles the series composition for Horizons and wrote several screenplays for different episodes) both worked on a few similar series in the past (Eden of the East, Mysterious Joker, for example).
Kimiko Ueno will be in charge of HZ037. She has never worked on the anime before either, so this will be the first episode she writes in the series. I am curious to see if she'll be more involved in some episodes in the future! I am familiar with some of her scripts in YGO (Sevens and Go Rush) which have a crack-ish tone to them sometimes, so I wonder how she'll go about things in Horizons.
Kimiko Ueno and Dai Sato also both worked on a series together in the past (Yurei Deco, for example).
Overall, it's interesting seeing new names in terms of screenplay for the anime! Chapter 2 has brought Naohiro Fukushima and Kimiko Ueno as new writers so far.
