Cozy Christmas Season Comfort! Skyward Sword Edition

Link stared for what felt like an eternity, Zelda alongside him.

What… was this stuff? Why was everything white? He recognized ice well enough, but this other stuff…

Dipping down, he scooped some into his hand, startled by how cold it was, and sniffed it. Zelda stepped hesitantly into it and yelped when her foot sank so deep it covered up to her knee.

“You okay?” Link asked immediately as he pulled her back into the temple entrance.

“Yeah, it just caught me off guard,” she answered, looking at her leg. “It’s… it’s soaking wet…?”

Wet? This was a liquid? But it was fluffy and solid-ish. It wasn’t frozen.

The white stuff bulged in a line as if something were burrowing through it, getting progressively closer. Both Skyloftians tensed, Zelda reaching for her sword, when Link put a hand on her arm to calm her, recognizing the little grunts.

Out popped Machi, his pointy nose stained white with a touch of whatever this stuff was. “Oh! Hi, Link and Link’s friend!”

“Machi, what’s going on?” Link asked.

Machi made his high pitched signature kikwi squeak, cocking his head to the side as his little arms pushed some of the white stuff aside. “Nothing? I hope nothing’s going on!”

“But what is this stuff?” Link asked, grabbing more of the strange not-solid-not-liquid.

Machi blinked. “This…? This is… have you never seen snow?”

“Snow?” The pair repeated.

“Yes, snow!” Machi said, throwing his little arms in the air. “It comes almost every winter. It’s winter rain.”

Now Link was even more confused. “Rain?”

Machi stared at him. “Link! You know what rain is, it rained when I saw you leaving the skyview temple.”

“You mean when the sky was crying?” Link asked. “Fi called that precipitation.”

“Precipi-what?”

Link shook his head. “Never mind. So this is winter sky tears?”

“No, it’s snow,” Machi corrected him. “And it’s cold! I’m going to the Great Tree to get out of it.”

Zelda smiled. “You can come inside too, we have a fire going.”

Machi perked up. “Oooh, a fire? That would be lovely!”

As Zelda guided Machi indoors, Link continued to look at the—at the snow all around him. A loftwing cry sounded overhead, and he saw Groose leap off and then Yelp, caught unawares by the snow, and promptly vanish into it with a muffled splat.

Link laughed.

“W-what is t-this stuff?!” Groose wailed from his Groose-shaped hole in the snow.

Link finally braved the strange white fluff and stepped into it, mindful of how deep it was, making his way to his friend. He supposed they all still had a lot of adjusting to do with moving to the Surface, but this was one he could really have a lot of fun with.
