What are the Causes, Signs and Treatment for Kidney Failure?
Our kidneys are responsible for a range of vital functions, including blood filtration, blood pressure regulation, and hemoglobin levels. Kidney failure, commonly known as Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), is the result of irreversible and chronic damage to the kidneys. The kidneys' functions are all affected by this condition. This causes kidney damage as well as a rise in blood pressure, anemia, and bone disease.
Tumblr media
What are the main causes of Kidney Failure?
There are various explanations for how kidney failure occurs. These are the risk factors:
1. Diabetes: Diabetes is the leading cause of CKD. Diabetes is identified later in this situation due to a lack of consciousness and proactive approach to routine health checkups, by which time other organs such as the kidneys have been impacted.
2. Hypertension: Uncontrolled hypertension is a major risk factor for renal failure. When hypertension is under control, however, it is not as much of a risk factor.
3. Family History: Having a family history of renal dysfunction raises your chances of developing chronic kidney disease.
4. Infection: Recurrent urine or kidney infections are additional warning signs of this condition.
5. Over-the-counter medications: Taking drugs without consulting a doctor might cause not just renal damage but also several other negative side effects.
6. Glomerular disease: Proteins in the urine are a warning sign of imminent kidney damage, which can lead to kidney failure if left untreated
1. Undiagnosed anaemia
2. Weakness
3. Tiredness
4. Sleeping problems
5. Chest discomfort
6. Breathing problems
7. Loss of appetite
8. Urinary changes
9. Swelling in the feet and face
10. Consistent vomiting
11. Nausea
12. Unexplained weight reduction
The kidney is usually severely damaged by the time the symptoms occur and the patient consults the doctor. This is why it is important to get one's kidneys examined and checked before symptoms appear..
How can renal failure be detected early?
To stop the disease from developing further, it's critical to get detected before it worsens. Among the diagnostic methods are:
1. Blood tests: are used to determine the presence and concentration of chemicals such as urea and creatinine.
2.Urine Tests: These are used to detect how well the kidneys are working by examining the amounts of albumin, creatinine, and blood proteins in the urine.
3. Imaging Tests: A CT scan, an MRI scan, or an ultrasound can be used to create an image of the kidneys and detect any blockages or abnormalities.
4. Biopsy: A small sample of the kidney is removed and analyzed in the lab.
What are the treatment options for Kidney Failure?
The treatment for CKD depends on the stage of the disease.
1. The first three stages are early-onset stages in which the underlying cause must be addressed and no particular renal failure medications are given. If a person has diabetes, for example, blood sugar levels must be kept under check. The same can be said with high blood pressure.
2. Smoking is a critical step. Any kidney or urine infection should be treated as soon as possible.
3. Kidney function may be reduced by as much as 60% to 70% in advanced stages. In these cases, additional attention should be placed on blood pressure regulation and avoiding kidney-harming substances.
4. Medications such as angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers have been shown to slow down the progression of the disease.
5. Medications have no impact in stage 5, when kidney loss approaches 80-90 percent, and the only options are dialysis or if the patient is fit enough, a kidney transplant.
6. Exercise can help patients with CKD indirectly since it helps to maintain blood pressure, sugar levels, and weight, all of which help to prevent the illness from progressing further. Walking, cycling, and other moderate workouts for 150 to 180 minutes per week are definitely beneficial in the early stages.
If you or anyone one you know facing such trouble then they must visit a Nehprologist. Who is practicing as a expert in all types of kidney diseases and renal transplantation. Dr. Sandeep Morakhandikar is a well-known Nephrologist in Pune at Fertiprotect and Superspecialty center, Pune.

Acute Kidney Failure - Symptoms and causes
Acute Kidney Injury (AKI), previously known as Acute Renal Failure (ARF), is a sudden and often reversible loss of kidney function. It occurs over a short period and can range from mild to severe. AKI should not be confused with chronic kidney disease (CKD), which is a long-term, progressive condition.
Tumblr media
Symptoms of Acute Kidney Injury (AKI):
Decreased Urine Output: One of the primary signs of AKI is a reduction in urine output. This can range from producing significantly less urine to not passing any urine at all.
Fluid Retention: As the kidneys fail to remove excess fluid from the body, individuals with AKI may experience swelling, especially in the legs, ankles, and face.
Fatigue and Weakness: A general feeling of weakness, fatigue, and lethargy is common in AKI.
Shortness of Breath: Accumulation of fluid in the lungs (pulmonary edema) can lead to difficulty breathing.
Confusion: Kidney dysfunction can result in a buildup of waste products in the blood, leading to confusion and altered mental function.
Chest Pain or Pressure: In some cases, AKI can cause chest pain or pressure due to fluid buildup around the heart.
Causes of Acute Kidney Injury (AKI):
AKI can be caused by a variety of factors, including:
Dehydration: Severe dehydration from conditions like diarrhea, vomiting, or excessive sweating can reduce blood flow to the kidneys, leading to AKI.
Infections: Serious infections like sepsis can impair kidney function.
Medications: Certain medications, especially if used inappropriately or in high doses, can be toxic to the kidneys. These include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), some antibiotics, and contrast dyes used in medical imaging.
Kidney Obstruction: Blockages in the urinary tract, such as kidney stones or an enlarged prostate, can hinder urine flow and cause AKI.
Autoimmune Diseases: Conditions like vasculitis and lupus can lead to inflammation in the kidneys.
Blood Loss: Severe bleeding, such as from an injury or surgery, can reduce blood flow to the kidneys.
Hypotension: A significant drop in blood pressure (hypotension) can impair kidney function.
Heart Failure: Heart conditions that reduce the heart's ability to pump blood effectively can lead to AKI due to reduced blood flow to the kidneys.
Early diagnosis and treatment of the underlying cause are crucial in managing AKI. In some cases, AKI is reversible, but severe cases may require dialysis to support kidney function until they recover.
It's essential to seek medical attention if you experience symptoms of AKI or are at risk due to underlying health conditions or medications. AKI can be a serious medical emergency, and prompt intervention can make a significant difference in outcomes.
