Soundtrack Commentary - Music Director Noh Young-shim
youtube
Tumblr media
Part 1. Brave
The lyrics is in Jun-ho's perspective. He's not helping her out of pity. I think when you meet a person who constantly makes you reflect on yourself, that is love. This song is about Jun-ho's will to be the one who walks with Young-woo in same pace and rhythm just like they went through the revolving door together.

Part 2. Beyond My Dreams
This melody was in my study note for a long time. I developed it based on the 'Revolving Door Waltz' scene.

Part 3. Better Than Birthday
I thought about what 'birthday' would mean to Young-woo. Young-woo says it's the first time she constantly thinks of someone. She is in love with Jun-ho. So the lyrics goes like 'I like you more than my birthday, you're sweeter than the cake'

Part 5. Inevitable
In the script of the kiss scene, the description about how the sensor lights turn on and off was very detailed. So I made this song based on that. Also the title of the song is from Young-woo's line in EP1, "It's not easy to not do it." (Eng title of the song is 'Inevitable' but in korean it is literally a sentence: 'It is not easy to not do it') To her, love is just like that. It's not easy to not love Jun-ho. Love is inevitable.

Reborn Rich the final episode
What an ending.
It's so bittersweet but I love it. Maybe it's my obsession with Jin Do Jun, but if you follow the actual chronology of things - Do Jun was reborn as Hyun Woo first. Because he died first. And if fate cannot be changed then he was meant to recover his memories as Jin Do Jun, which had alread been burried within him. Even before Hyun Woo "died" (for a week), it was meant to happen. So who is really who at the end? As Hyun Woo called it, you could think of it as repentance, but for me personally, Do Jun existed in Hyun Woo long before Hyun Woo got "reborn" as Do Jun.
All that being said, I do have some very smaaaaaall issues with the ending.
First, it felt rushed. Honestly the last 3 episodes or so felt really rushed compared to the rest of the drama's pace. Everything that needed to happen still happened, but it was just.... I don't wanna say half-baked but.....
Second, Hyun Woo got shot straight in the head point blank. You're telling me he miraculously survived that? Sure there are some miracles that happene even in real life, but it's a patter I hate with tv shows, nto just kdrama. At the very least, he would've needed years to recover. Although, if I really want to defend it, I could say the years he spent as Do Jun somehow changed Hyun Woo's brain's perception of time which afforded him just enough time to recover. Still, between Do Jun's and Hyun Woo's death, Do Jun would've had a much higher survival rate than Hyun Woo. Sure, Do Jun's car got slammed pretty hard, but it's not comparable to getting shot at point blank IN THE FREAKING HEAD, now is it? :/
Also I would've loved to see the actual process of Mr. Oh Se Hyun working with Do Jun's mother, instead of just hearing about all the things they're gonna do..... but we don't get to see them.
Jin Sung Jun's character deserved more too. Sure he was greedy, but he was not guilty of ordering Do Jun's murder. Both times he was innocent. He knew everyone would've suspected him, which is was exactly what his father wanted. It's the reason why he got the company in the first place. Sung Jun deserves some justice too. I feel like it would've been that more epic if the show had gone back to the conversation between Hyun Woo and Sung Jun from episode 1 and committed to the bond that was forming. Imagine if we had Hyun Woo and Sung Jun working together in the final episodes. Hyun Woo gets to finish Do Jun's deed and Sung Jun finally has a change of heart and pays tribute to his grandfather and runs the company with the same heart his grandfather had.
On a more positive note (says anticupid), Hyun Woo did not end up in a relationship with Min Young! Which makes logical sense, for once. I'm not saying I'm happy that they didn't get together, I'm saying it happened for the right reasons. But I'm sure most of the ship's fans will be satisfied that she seemed to recognize Do Jun in Hyun Woo in the end. One could imagine they did end up meeting up and like.... making babies. Idk.
I liked the future Min Young a lot more. Although for her to become the Soonyang Grim Reapper and wear only black because she was mourning for Do Jun, I really would have loved to see more of their relationship developing at least? As it was all based on only a few times they talked? Briefly? But I guess human emotiones are unpredictable, so it's possible. Anyways, there's that.
A little sad the endings of the rest of the characters were rushed by too, but I didn't see anything that made me think "hmm this doesn't make sense". Honestly, is there not going to be a season 2? Now I'm kinda disappointed, because I wish we had spent more time with how the other characters' life continued. As well as more to see of Do Jun with his family. But I get it, it was never the focus of the show.
All my other thoughts about this drama flew out the window.
I can say it was a lovely experience. I enjoyed this so much despite constantly finding something to nag about. I loved following Jin Do Jun's life, and that particular era in South Korea's history. The real footage they used. I loved Jin Yang Cheol's character, I loved Lee Sung Min's acting (as well as Joong Ki's, always).
It made me cry a couple of times and any drama that invokes real emotion in me keeps a spot in my heart. Especially when Ha In Seok went to testify and thought Hyun Woo was Do Jun (was he wrong though?) and wanted to protect him. The unspoken hero of this show. It was a fantastic story, even if we look at it only from Do Jun's perspective, it makes for an amazing story. Had Hyun Woo not even been a part of this drama, I would've still loved just watching Do Jun and his grandpa. Hyun Woo's growth at the end was the bonus for me. I get to exprience something which unlocked his cage and his heart. The boy who grew up in poverty and had many hardships because of it, the boy who willingly walked into a cage because of his trauma caused by poverty. He put his emotions aside, thinking that money was more important than them. Finally, he was freed from it all.
With a new look on life, a new heart and a new dream, he was able to leave all of his hurt behind and live in a way that not only fits him better, as a human, but also a life that Do Jun would be proud to see him live.
Ugh. I'm gonna miss Do Jun's smile though. I know Joong Ki plays both, but that smile is now Do Jun's until the day I die and there's no changing my mind.
Alright, time to go cry in a dark corner. I love-hate this ending.

Announcement: ‘Found in Translation’ now live
Hi All!
So it’s been roughly half a million years since I last posted, but I wanted to share part of what I’ve been up to in the meantime.
There are a lot of things that tumblr does well, but archiving isn’t one of them. And since I’m the queen of monster posts full of linked references and cross-references, I thought some of them might be better hosted on a site that allows for easy navigation and recall. That site is called Found in Translation and it is now (finally) live.
The other fun thing about Found in Translation is that it’s a joint effort between my sister and me, where we explore and geek out about language, culture, and translation through the lens of some of our favorite shows. That means that there is also a lot of novel content on the site that I’ve never shared here.
If you have the chance, please take a look and let us know what you think! It’s still very much a work in progress and we’d love any feedback you’re willing to share. ❤︎ You can visit the site here.

omg glad to see u back !!!!! :DD kinda (very) late but... the business proposal ? (i love that series! a friend of mine is watching it cus i recommended it to them) STILL DEPENDS ON U THO AND U PROBS ALREADY HAVE SOMETHING IN MIND
- 🌸
HI!!!! I was actually thinking about you. You’re my first (and only) emoji/reoccurring anon which is why you pop in my head sometimes. 😭
This is gonna be all over the place so please bear with me:
I finished Her Private Life and I ended up REALLY enjoying it. The chemistry between the actors was amazing AND it was a healthy relationship!?!?!? I was prepared for something to go down around the 12th episode (which is when things normally go down???) but they talked it out like the adults they were and came to a solution. I loved it. It was so cheesy and cliché but done in the best way!! I really enjoyed it.
After that, I’ve been looking up Kdramas with healthy relationships and seeing if they’re on any US streaming services or on Viki for free.
Someone suggested My ID is Gangnam Beauty and I tried watching it but holy shit was that unhealthy. He was mad at someone for flirting with her when they weren’t even dating let alone friends??? Nahhh couldn’t finish.
I’m on episode 11 of Extraordinary Attorney Woo, which I’m really enjoying, but I wanted more of a slice of life own so I kept looking. and then I found it, the crème de la crème, Hospital Playlist. I fell in love 44 minutes into the first episode. I just… I reblogged some of the stuff. It’s just so funny and not ~really~ about medical stuff which I’m appreciative of. The characters are absolute ICONS and they all have healthy, loving, and trusting relationships with each other. They’re so funny and the dialogue is so good. It’s just… chefs kiss

casting lee dohyun in the good bad mother is maybe one of the best castings ever... because put that man in a suit with his hair done and he's stern. he's powerful. he's undefeatable. he's 35.
but make him smile his dopey ass heartstrings-pulling wide smile with his hair down and he's young. he's meek. he's adorable and sweet. he's 7.

Just finished watching the first episode of Reborn Rich (재벌집 막내아들). I have high expectations of this drama. It had me from the beginning, which doesn't happen very often. Also the fact that he gets reborn but back in time, I find that very interesting.

Gosh, I’m so happy. I won’t have to pay the penalty this year. What do you mean? I had a wedding hall booked just in case. I was worried about canceling it again.

I recognize that not everyone is going to be on board for a suspenseful horror-adjacent period thriller but if you are into any of those things you absolutely gotta watch Gyeongseong Creature because WOW.

I'm halfway through the show, Queen of Tears, and something that I've seen floating across is the anti Hyun Woo sentiment regarding how he treated Hae In initially and was just trying to do it all for the will.
Something to understand here is that in situations such as his, where he was emotionally empty and just a shell of himself who was just functioning, he didn't have the bandwidth to understand the gravity of situation that was Hae In's terminal illness.
In Hyun Woo's mind, he didn't have Hae In's support anywhere, be it against his in-Laws or in the company. She is silent against her family and hostile and argumentative in the company. He doesn't know what all she does for him on the sly or in backstage. He is not aware and Hae In never made the effort to change that situation.
All that pressure, anxiety, gear and emotional drain took its toll on Hyun Woo's emotional capacity. Stuck in a state of constant negativity, his initial reaction to Hae In's illness might be a form of self-preservation. He shuts down completely, unable to process the additional emotional burden of her mortality.
Something to remember is also the fact, that although he was thinking of it, the one thing that pushed him to draft the divorce papers were the talk of their child, whose entire identity and life was being decided by Hae In's family while she had no opinion on that and couldn't care less. This entire situation fueled the fire of resentment burning within Hyun Woo. Here was Hae In, seemingly indifferent to the future of their potential child, the very thing that initially distanced them. It felt like a repeat of their early struggles, where her family held all the cards and Hae In remained silent, leaving him to battle alone.
This perception, however flawed it might be, explains his impulsive decision to draft the divorce papers. Exhausted and emotionally hollowed out, he saw the child issue as the final straw, a symbol of their inability to stand together. He might have been grasping at a desperate solution, a way to force a change in their dynamic, a cry for her to finally fight for him and their future.
Of course, this doesn't paint Hyun Woo as a hero. His actions were undeniably hurtful, a clumsy and emotionally charged attempt to solve a complex situation. But by understanding the immense pressure he was under, the constant negativity seeping into his core, we can see a flicker of vulnerability beneath his anger. He craved Hae In's support, her voice alongside his in the face of adversity. Perhaps, the divorce papers were a twisted plea for her to finally break her silence, to acknowledge his pain and fight for their future together.
Here's where empathy becomes crucial. While his actions are undeniably hurtful, it's important to consider if they stem from malice or a desperate attempt to cope.
Think about it this way: Imagine a cup overflowing with negativity. Hyun Woo's daily struggles with his in-laws, the lack of support at work, and the constant emotional strain have already filled his cup to the brim. When Hae In's illness is revealed, it's simply too much for him to handle at that moment. He doesn't have the emotional space to understand the gravity of her situation, let alone offer support. in fact, it's easy for him to consider her death as an easy escape since his capacity for empathy or his love for her was essentially buried under all that negativity.
