Review: Hooked on You
Riley McAllister left the small Arkansas town of Maple Falls after graduating high school, hoping to make it big in New York as a mixed media artist. She’s still pursuing her dream when her grandmother begs her to come home and help her manage the store while she recovers from a broken leg she got after sliding into third base during a church softball game (she was safe, by the way). Riley…

"NURSE 20040132, RECEPTION ASAP."
Kathleen looked down at her pager and cocked a brow. Usually, she didn't get called to reception unless stuff was going down.
Sighing, she took off her latex gloves and walked over to the sink, washing her hands up to her forearms, before she left the A&E area through one of the double doors.
Scanning her badge on the sensor by the staff-only doors, she stepped out to the reception, clad in her royal blue scrubs.
She had been expecting a reception packed full, or maybe a very distraught family member reaming out the receptionist... But instead, the reception was not very full, and her eyes locked on one very tall and burly Captain Price.
He looked different this time. Still tall and imposing, with big hairy arms on display...
But sporting a thicker, fuller beard... and now wearing a full uniform. A quarter-zip fleece with camo print on the arms, and plain tan on the body, cargo pants and boots... and a kevlar vest.
It had been two weeks since she'd gone over to Stirling Lines to ream out the man and, true to his word, he didn't put in more requests for Wallcroft's release... But now, being here, it rang alarm bells in Kathleen's mind.
Was she about to get reamed out in front of hospital staff the way she did to him, in front of his inferiors? Or was he about to warn he was pursuing Non-Judicial Punishment for her?
Approaching him, she clipped her I.D. back on the left breast pocket of her scrubs and approached the reception desk, leaning on the surrounding wall of the desk, where one of the admin nurses was stationed. "Parker, you rang?" She beckoned.
"I did." Price spoke up before Nurse Parker could get a word in. Kathleen turned her face to look up at John with a cocked brow before she sighed and nodded.
"What can I help you with, Captain?" She asked him, placing her hands in the front pockets of her blue scrubs top.
Price looked at her with a slight tilt of his neck and head, as if he wanted to appear smaller for her, or, maybe, to hear her and see her beter.
His blue eyes took in the shape of the beautiful woman in front of him, the way her uniform didn't conceal the curvy nature of her body, or the size of her breasts, even with an extra layer in the shape of a black underscrubs top beneath the blue scrubs.
"Wanted to see you." He replied as his gaze slid back up to meet her brown ones.
"See me, huh?" She asked and tilted her head to the side, noting the way his hands slid up to grip the straps of his vest right below each shoulder.
The man nodded in agreement, eyebrows raising up to his hairline, which was concealed by a toque, as if he was inviting her to argue about it.
"Well..." Kathleen trailed off as she looked at him. "You saw me." Kathleen said. "Now if you don't mind, I've got better things to do than stand here looking pretty." She began to turn away to duck back behind the security doors.
"Moore, please, wait a minute." Price said, calling her by her surname, which she had no clue he knew. It caused her to stop and look over at him again, over her shoulder.
Sighing loudly, she turned fully to face him and rolled her eyes. "What, Captain?" She asked, conceding in giving him another moment of her time.
John took a step closer, and another, until he was standing over her again. "Let me take you out."
Kathleen cocked a brow. Not the first time a soldier or officer had tried asking her on a date. Hell, not the first they'd turned up after they had been cleared or discharged from treatment just to see her...
But it was the first time that a man invited her out after she had cussed him out.
Shaking her head, she turned away again, and walked over to the double doors she had just emerged from, scanning her I.D. on the reader and pushing the door open. Then, she looked over her shoulder.
John was still standing there, hands on the straps of his vest, looking at her with a deep gaze, like he was trying to see through the layers of her scrubs. Sighing and tapping her foot on the floor twice, she finally waved him over with her hand.
He quickly rushed toward her just as she pushed the door back fully. "Walk with me." She demanded as she began moving down the hall. The man obeyed, staying by her side.
"Don't touch anything, don't look anywhere, don't talk to anyone." She warned him as they passed another doorway, which she pushed open by pressing the crash bar down with her wide hip.
Price followed after her, slipping past the door by turning to the side. "Are you going to let me take you out?" He insisted.
"I'm busy." Was the only reply she could give him, eyes glued forward as they weaved through the hallways.
"I mean on your day off, love."
"I'm a nurse. We don't have those."
"Well, when's your next break?"
"I'm on my feet for 12 hours a day. I don't eat a full meal or drink water for those same 12 hours. I'm genuinely considering starting to wear an adult nappy so I can cut the amount of times I have to go to the loo which are already not a lot because I have a strong bladder and don't drink nearly enough to need to go often, hell, I already wear nicotine patches because I can't get myself smoke breaks."
A normal man would've flinched or winced or shown disgust at what she was saying. At the very least, because it was TMI, and at the most because she's clearly trying to gross him out and scare him away.
And yet John remained impavid, looking at her with the same expression as always, a slightly amused smirk tugging at his lips, eyes locked on her face, on her mouth, as she spoke.
"Didn't answer my question, love."
"I don't have breaks, Captain."
"John." He corrected her.
"Hm?" She cocked a brow as she finally turned to actually look at him.
"John Price." He replied, introducing himself to her.
Sighing and rolling her eyes, she introduced herself in turn. "Kathleen Moore."
"When are you free, Kathleen?" He insisted as he looked at her, right in her eyes, head dipped at an angle.
"Not anytime soon."
"Well... whenever 'not anytime soon' comes..." John began as he reached into his pocket and produced a piece of paper in which he'd scribbled his number prior to the conversation. "Give me a ring." He reached the folded up paper toward her.
Kathleen took his number carefully and stuffed it into her breast pocket. "I'll think about it."
"I'll make sure to wipe all the thoughts from that busy head of yours when you do, love."
"Yeah, right." Kathleen scoffed as they finally entered the A&E department and she quickly washed her hands once more and popped on a pair of latex gloves, before disappearing behind a curtain to check on a patient, leaving John standing there, by the doors leading back out.
-
As it turns out, 'not anytime soon' was actually almost a week later, on Saturday. She shot him a text a bit last minute and, as such, they agreed on coffee, not far from base.
Kathleen arrived and went inside the quaint coffeeshop, immediately catching a glimpse of John in the corner of the room, having claimed a booth to himself. He caught sight of her too, blue eyes flittering over her body, almost shamelessly so.
Kathleen got in line and ordered herself a tea and a raspberry tartlet, paying for them before she headed over to John's table. He was already sitting with his own cuppa and a lemon drizzle cake slice in front of him.
"Took your sweet time, love." John told her as she took her seat beside him, placing her purse on the other side of her body, leaving her left side open for John to come closer.
"Yeah... I didn't want to come." Kathleen replied as she shook her head and gave him a dismissive, mocking glance.
John sighed and shook his head. a smile tugging at the corner of his lips... which only grew when he noticed she was smirking too.
"You think you're funny, huh?"
"Oh, no, I don't think so, I am funny, Captain." She teased him.
John's blue eyes squinted at her in mild amusement, before he leaned a bit closer to her, setting a hand on her hand over the table. "Worth the wait, though, I've gotta say." He remarked, looking her up and down.
His date smiled a bit in the face of the compliment and shook her head. "Thank you..." She said sincerely.
Kathleen looked radiant, her long brown hair tied in a half-up half-down style, wearing pretty make-up and jewelry, and a stunning black and gold cami top, with skin-tight blue jeans and black high-heeled boots.
"You could've put in a bit more effort, though." She quipped as she looked at him. "Looking like you've just rolled out of bed and threw on the first thing you saw in your closet." She said, a mean smirk on her lips, as she watched his eyes narrow.
She had a point however. She had definitely tried harder than him... In his blue jeans, grey quarter-button shirt and black jacket, paired with blue sneakers.
"Oh is that how it is?" John taunted her while cocking a brow, sliding even closer to her, wrapping an arm around the small of her back and onto the side of her hip, pulling her tight against him.
A normal woman would already be pulling away. John was too bold, too handsy... But as Kathleen stared right into his eyes, she couldn't find it in herself to mind.
"Mhm... that's how it is." She murmured as she leaned into him as well, swiveling at the hip in order to face him, setting her hands on his chest.
"We'll see who'll look like they just rolled out of bed when I'm done with you." He murmured in her ear, only pulling away as soon as the waiter came over with Kathleen's order.
It reminded them, forcibly so, that they were in a public place, and caused them both to put some distance between them.
-
"Portuguese, huh?" John asked as he sipped on his second cuppa, holding it around the brim and trying not to burn himself on the hot liquid.
"Mhm..." Kathleen stirred the spoon in her own second cup almost mindlessly.
How they had gone from flirting shamelessly and nearly jumping each other's bones to having a normal, cordial getting-to-know-each-other conversation was beyond them.
They had been at it for nearly two hours now... and they had talked about it all:
What they studied and where (RMA Sandhurst vs. King's College);
How they came to be in their respective careers (wanted to do something good with his life vs. got recommended to enlist due to her bedside manners being 'tough');
What they do in their free time (reading and working out day-to-day, and fishing, woodworking and home/car restoration when he's home vs. reading, yoga and baking);
And now, of course, they were venturing into getting to know more of each other's pasts.
"Where in England did you grow up?" He asked her.
"Around Colchester." She said with a shrug before setting down her spoon and sipping her tea as well. "You?"
"Right around here. Hereford." He replied as he set down his cup and rested his right hand over hers again, fiddling with her feminine hand with his calloused hands, admiring the red nail polish she had put on.
"Big family?" She asked him with a cocked brow.
"Already asking me about my family, da'lin'? A bit eager, aren't ya?" John teased her while cocking his brow, then, slid closer again, lifting her hand up to his mouth and peppering a stupid kiss on the back of it.
"Oh, I'm sorry, 's it making it seem like I want to take yer last name or something, you big bastard?" She taunted in return, which earned her a laugh from him.
"You're a terrible woman, you know that?" He replied, causing her to roll her eyes. "God help the man who marries you one day."
Kathleen scoffed at him and rolled her eyes again. "And this is coming from the man that nearly groveled on his knees to ask me out?"
"I didn't grovel, you hellcat."
"Right, you just accosted me at work and begged me to go out with you, innit, John?"
John scoffed too but dropped another kiss on the back of her hand, and then over her fingers, and onto her palm, blue eyes glued to her brown ones.
There was something in his eyes, something in his kisses. Every nasty word they traded, paired with those stupid kisses of his, and his beard rubbing against her soft skin... She could see herself getting lost in it. In him.
"Didn't answer my question." She told him swiftly, changing the subject as she slipped her hand off his grasp and pushed his head back playfully by the forehead, before grabbing her cuppa and sipping it a bit more.
John didn't feel deterred, he simply slid over, wrapping an arm around the small of her back again and looking into her eyes from up close, even as she drank from her steamy tea cup, his lips almost pressed to it from the other side.
She regarded him through the steam, and over the rim of her cuppa, as if forcefully drawing out her sip of tea, to force him to wait, to have to answer her, the eye contact between them electric and full of heat.
"Just a younger sister." John finally gave in and replied, and so, she finally pulled back the cuppa and set it over the table again.
"Two sisters, two brothers." Kathleen replied in exchanged, which caused John's eyebrows to shoot up.
"Big fuckin' family, that there." John remarked, and she nodded in reply. "You're the big sister?"
"Second oldest." She replied, causing John to nod this time.
"No wonder you're so feisty, sweet'art."
"And no wonder you're such a cunt, John."
"Oh, are big brothers cunts for ya, are they?"
"They are. It's like they make it their life mission to be cunts to their little sisters."
"And you'd know it all about being a cunt, wouldn't ya?" John teased with a cocked brow.
Kathleen didn't deny it, she didn't even seem offended, she merely shrugged and smirked.
John's eyes caught the way the corner of her plump lips curled up in satisfaction and smugness, the cupid's bow well-defined even with just a light layer of peach coloured lipstick.
He leaned his head forward again, taking advantage of the cup no longer being in the way and, slowly, rubbed his lips against the corner of her mouth, his beard rubbing against her jaw and cheek.
His large nose brushed the side of her shorter, upturned one and, softly, he whispered against the skin of her cheek. "Should let me get you out of here..."
"And why would I do that, Jonathan?" Kathleen asked in return, playing coy.
As if her breathing hadn't already hitched in anticipation at the idea of what John was proposing, as if she hadn't been boldly staring a him and the way his clothes clung to his muscular body, the way his cologne wrapped around her like a cloud, as if his strong arm around her didn't make her want to mount him.
"If you keep saying my name like that..." John murmured under his breath as he pressed his lips to the corner of her mouth. Kathleen's hand slid down his stomach and over his belt buckle, before settling over the growing bulge in his blue jeans.
"Fuckin' 'ell... You'll be the fuckin' death of me, Kat." He added with a hiss, eyes fluttering a bit from the mere fact her hand was rubbing over his bulge under the table. "Let me take you out of here, sweet'art." He pleaded in a whisper.
"I don't know..." Kathleen continued teasing him in a coy tone. "I'm not really the type that goes to bed with a bloke on the first date... Not that this even counts as a first date." She added in a scathing tone, causing John to hiss again.
"Right... except I'm not a bloke... I'm a man." John murmured. "And this isn't a first date, according to you..." He listed off. "And... I don't plan on taking you to bed. I plan on watching you ride my cock in the back of my car..." He added, his blue eyes finding hers at the same time as she sucked her bottom lip behind her teeth.
Kathleen wished she could argue with him... But it's not every day that a man not only tolerates her attitude but hands it back equally. And, hell, she couldn't deny that John was attractive... Maybe a bit too attractive...
"So what do you say?" John added with a smirk.

How They Were, Nah. How They Are.
Fixed It Canon: Part 1
But About When Skippy Came Back From The War & After Reuniting with Hawk, They Both Devided They Won't Quit Each Other Ever Again. Tim can't fight or deny his feelings for Hawk, & Hawk Couldn't Fill The Ache and Loneliness That Tim Left When He First Got Drafted. They Both Sobered Up. They Both Wanted Life Together. They Both Decided To Commit to Each Other.
So That's What They Did.
Hawk went to Lucy and filed for Divorce. He let her see that they weren't working. That they shouldn't have gotten married in the first place. They wanted different things, reminded her of her European men and how she could finally get her rich man. While hesitant at first, Lucy had to admit that their marriage hasn't been what she thought it would've been. When Hawk announced he'd gotten stationed in Europe, Lucy realized there marriage was effectively over.
Hawk brought Skippy when he left for Europe. After his time was served, Hawk Stayed. Hawk bought a nice villa house and Skippy happily decorated
" Their New Home".
6 months of settling in, Skippy tells Hawk He'd like a family. "How many?" Asks Hawk. Shyly, Skippy says, "4 or 5". Hawk kisses Skippy, looks at him with eyes full of love and says "Ok".
So they adopt. 5 to be exact.
3 girls & 2 boys.
Kathleen, Denise, Teresa, William & James Fuller-Laughlin
They are the best dads. They love their kids so much. Tim spent hours in town trying to get everything just right for the nurseries and rooms. Bottles, diapers, clothes, blankets, etc."Come on Skippy, they'll love it." Hawk says eager to get home and set up. "But I want it to be perfect" Tim insists.
They shop around for another 4 hrs.
The Nursery is perfect when it's done.
Hawk holds Denise with such care. He's never seen someone so precious. When William & James are napping , Tim watches fondly and thinks this is what he was put on this earth to do.
As the kids get older, Tim reads every parenting book he can get his hands on. Hawk prefers to take a natural approach. Tim fusses over every meal he makes for them. Hawk let's them steal a cookie.
Hawk is beyond proud when Teresa and Kathleen both show interest in following down in his tennis footsteps. He helps them practice every Saturday afternoon.
Denise and James are always on the couch with Skippy after lunch when he's trying to watch his show. He doesn't mind at all.
They really are a happy little family.

Everything I knit in 2023
This would the final 2023 video on my would-be knitting podcast, but I do not have a knitting podcast so enjoy it on here instead.
I'll go in chronological order since every item is different (there is 1 hat, 1 garment, etc) except for the socks, as I'm delighted to say I knit 4 pairs of!
Keep in my that this is my 3rd year knitting.
Btw, the cost is for the number of skeins I've bought and opened for this project. If I only used half a skein, it will be calculated like a full skein price wise.
Buffalo Rose Beanie by KC Knitting Co
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Project on Ravelry. My first stranded colorwork & my first proper hat! I learned a ton of techniques with this, like colorwork and how to construct a basic hat and a new cast on. I did so many swatches before starting this project. I love the rose design but I think my choice of yarn made it a bit squished?
It's slightly too tight and quite too short. The tightness is my own fault (I should have probably used 4 mm needles instead of 3.5 mm), but other people on Ravelry have said that their hat ended up being too short, so I think this might be a problem of the pattern itself. I had to open the top and knit another round of squares and it still doesn't cover my ears (the photo is from before I did this surgery).
Yarn: Mondial Merinos Extra, Mondial Merino Baby
COST: around 15€
USAGE: Not much because of fit issues.
FUTURE: I might knit it again with 4 mm needles & longer but I don't know if it's worth the hassle anyway.
Avo-can-do by handmade by SMINÉ
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Project on Ravelry. Used it as a power bank pouch. It served me well over the last year but I've realized that this design with strings is not the best. It doesn't close completely and I'm always scared I'll be losing a phone cable. I remember I didn't do the eyelets for the strings properly either, I should have watched a tutorial.
Yarn: Mondial Merinos Extra
COST: Nothing, from stash.
USAGE: It's been in use for almost 1 year
FUTURE: I'll knit a new version with a different pattern and cotton yarn in 2024.
Cheval qui tien debout | Self-supporting Horse by Kathleen PETTIER
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Project on Ravelry. A gift for my sweet little cousin. I was very impressed that I was actually able to pull it off. I used LadyTemeraire notes for this pattern and to her I give my heartfelt thanks. Link on the Ravelry page.
I only have two regrets: I think the back legs are a bit wonky (but nobody is going to notice except for me) and I should have taken the time to make the tail fuller. By that point I was pretty fed up with the project, tho.
Yarn: random yarn I had in stash. I unraveled a scarf and a hat to get the little bits for the rainbow mane, actually.
COST: Nothing, from stash.
USAGE: Dunno. Gift.
FUTURE: Making stuffies is fun and I'd really enjoy making another one for another child.
Nalu Mitts by Leila Raven
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Project on Ravelry. A gift. It's a fun project that I would recommend to someone looking for some easy mittens and/or cables. It was fairly quicky to knit up. I did mess up the cables positioning a bit (they are too close to the thumb on one mitten) but oh well. Hopefully my friend won't notice, haha.
Yarn: Mondial Merinos Extra
COST: Nothing, from stash.
USAGE: It was a gift so who knows
FUTURE: I'l probably knit some mittens for myself sooner or later, but not using this pattern because I want fingers.
Step by Step Sweater by Florence Miller
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Project on Ravelry. I feel like everyone and their grandmother knit one of these this year. It was an easy pattern, even with the 2 "more difficult" modifications (folded collar and short row shaping). Certainly a good foray into garment-making but it did take me some 5 months to complete it!
I'm proud that after realizing I had chosen the wrong size, I frogged, did the math & casted on the correct size rather than keep going. At the time it made me very cranky but it was necessary.
And now, for the bad. I, once again, used 3.5 mm needles instead of 4 mm. The fabric is way too dense and the yarn (Mondial Merino Plus) is scratchy so I have to wear a long-sleeved t-shirt underneath
I wanted the collar to sit closer to the neck. I don't know if this wasn't the right pattern for that or if it's something I did wrong? But I see lots of sweaters online with this same problem.
The sleeves are too short. It's my fault as I ran out of black yarn so I had to improvise and do some sweater surgery to lengthen the other colours (as I didn't want to spend any more money on this) but they still ended up too short.
Lastly, it gave me clicker thumb and I had to take a month long break from knitting in order to recover so, yeah. Not a really fun knit.
Yarn: Mondial Merino Plus
COST: around 40€, I think
USAGE: only a couple of times but one of the sleeves has kind of started to unravel already in the sweater surgery bit. The yarn is quite scratchy so I have to wear a long-sleeved t-shirt with it.
FUTURE: I think it's fine as it is.
Headband with a twist by Mirella Moments
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Project on Ravelry. I wanted a quick way to knit a hat and this seemed like a good choice. It came out pretty well: it fits perfectly and the twist makes it look classy and complicated but was actually so easy to knit. But unfortunately, it's not warm enough for the winter here. I will have to knit an actual hat after all!
Yarn: Mondial Merinos Extra
COST: nothing, yarn from stash.
USAGE: I wore it for a couple of weeks and I immediately got a colt. Sigh. Also, if I wear it for more than 15 min the yarn will start to feel scratchy on my forehead.
FUTURE: Will probably gift it to someone.
The socks
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In chronological order, from the top left:
Vanilla Sock with Gusset & Choice of Heel by Jo Torr. My third attempt at sock-making. Yarn: Mondial Kim (6€).
Stolen Bike Socks by Monica S. My pride and joy. Photo taken before I bought sock blockers but really, they are excellent. Yarn: Mondial Kim (from stash).
Simple DK Shortie Socks by Woolfield. A gift that I had to make quickly. The gusset decreases go in the wrong direction but that's ok it became a design feature. Yarn: Schachenmayr Regia (8€).
Togetherness Socks by Little Home Designs. Wonderful stupendous, to die for. My second foray into cables I did have to make the toes a little longer but whatever. Yarn: West Yorkshire Spinners Signature 4 Ply (£8.95).
Some conclusions
This year I knit 9 objects: 1 garment, 6 accessories, a random home object and 1 plushie. It's a lot more than I thought!
I think the reason why I felt that I didn't knit much this year was that I didn't focus on what I'm most interested in: sweaters and socks. I'm a product knitter. I knit because I need something. All of these things were useful, but one can never have too many socks and my sweater drawer is pretty miserable.
My 2024 knitting resolution: knit 2 sweaters + finish my Deborah cardigan before summer. Then another sweater in autumn. All the while, I'll be knitting as many socks as possible (not vanilla). I also need to knit a hat and a new power bank pouch, but those two are less urgent. I already have a ton of sock yarn (ok not quite but) and will purchase the other yarn after finishing the previous project.
Also, 3 of my projects were gifts. It's nice to knit gifts, but it takes a bunch of time and my wardrobe stays empty. At the end of the day, I'd rather knit for myself and tick something off my "want" list. No, I don't think that makes me selfish.
2024 resolution n2: No gift knitting at all.
Lastly, I hadn't realized that this year I knit almost entirely with Mondial yarn. Mostly because that's what my LYS carries and because I had it in stash from last year. In retrospect, I really don't like it. I find it scratchy, even the merino. But I do still have a fair bit left so I need to find ways to use it up. Perhaps the Mondial Merinos Extra would make decent socks?
New Year's Resolution part 3: Never buy Mondial yarn again.
Thanks for coming to my written knitting podcast. Here is to another year of crafting!

tlou hbo s1 ep5 thoughts (spoilers)
i don’t know why but i was surprised that the fedra overthrow happened so recently? in the fourth ep it seemed like it happened years ago and that kathleen had been running the militia group for a while
the parallel of henry telling sam to look at him and not at the rebel activity and joel saying the same thing to sarah in the first ep
reallyyy liked the line about ‘burning the bodies’ because of how it connects back to ep4, where one of the first shots of kansas city was of a giant pile of ash and bones. like you don’t think much of it in that moment beyond maybe like ‘oh shit something happened here’ so getting that extra layer feel very fulfilling
kathleen sitting and talking with all those prisoners caused me so much pain mostly because it reminded me of like every shitty know-it-all teacher with a superiority complex i had in middle/high school. but honestly it kind of works for the character like the fixation on doing what she wants and getting everyone else to fall in line,, idk it was just a genuinely terrifying characterization tbh and for that i liked it
i kinda wish they explained the relationship between perry and kathleen more, perry is literally ride or die for her but we have no idea why and it makes that side of the story feel a lot more emotionless than it could’ve been
i like the fact that sam is deaf in the show, mostly because it’s a new perspective on how people navigate the apocalypse. it was cool to see the different ways he communicates with people, or the ways he and henry have to adjust their actions to account for his lack of awareness. i do think it felt a little cheap in the sense that they only did it to make him rely more on henry, all of the important scenes with sam were the same as the game so it didn’t feel as if making him deaf enhanced those scenes.
absolutely LOVE this henry’s characterization. in the game he seemed way older for his age because he had more experience and was a lot more intense about things, like not letting sam play soccer and that sort of thing. but in the show he actually feels more like his age, maybe even a bit younger. he’s inexperienced, scared, immediately looks up to joel in almost a mentor-mentee way. he’s more lenient with just letting sam be a kid (and this could also be due to the fact that sam is younger here) which gives him a bit of his own child-like wonder. idk i just liked that they made him a bit lighter, a bit more earnest
the re’s all sorts of parallels in this ep i love it. henry having ellie and joel at gun point and he tells joel to look at him, not at sam, the same way marlene tells joel to point the gun at her, not at ellie. just the same drive towards protection
i don’t know why it never occurred to me that fedra could be like. worse or better depending on which qz you live in lol. like the games always characterized them as like a shit government period but never really went into nuance, so it wasn’t until the scene where joel and henry talk about it where it liked clicked to me that some could be worse than others. really makes the whole kansas city storyline feel a lot fuller now
“you ran into two clickers and you’re still alive” this line hurt so much. like he didn’t mean anything by it but he doesn’t realize that actually no they lost so much for it
ellie sticking close to sam, keeping an arm around him or giggling with him or whatever :’) they really nailed their friendship i’m so glad for it
the ish reference 🤌
i had my doubts about the kansas city / kathleen storyline after ep4 but i’m a lot happier with it now that we have more of the backstory. knowing that kathleen’s brother was the leader of the resistance and that on multiple accounts he was a genuinely good man makes all of kathleen’s and the milita group’s actions make a lot more sense. that plus the fact that the revolt happened only like a week ago and like yeah okay i get it now. still think they could’ve afforded an extra 10-15 min in the last ep just to flesh out KC more but at least we got something here
“i am a bad guy because i did a bad guy thing” love this line because it’s like the antithesis of tlou’s main themes, first the idea that there are no bad guys in this kind of world, and then also the idea that joel doesn’t care about good and bad, he cares about keeping ellie safe.
the infected scene was so fuckin sick, i was cheering the whole time!! i get why they’re a little stingy on showing them, it keeps the horror and suspense up and all, but i really do wish we could see more of them. and the bloater!!!! so cool!!!!!! when he killed perry using the same death animation from the game i got so fuckin hype lmfao
the running theme of the superheroes throughout this ep, and then the way it all ties into ellie seeing herself as the hero and thinking she’ll be able to save sam,,, it’s so good but so painful. i could write a whole post about ellie’s characterization and how all the threads connect together (her naivety, her fixation on violence, the way all these things contribute to her hero complex) but i won’t do it here. i just love that we’re getting to explore this more, i feel like the game has more emphasis on the idea that being the cure is an obligation for ellie, so having this side of it helps fill in the gaps for her motivations (and also sets up the foundation for pt2, but that is also a separate post)
also really the love the parallel of henry asking sam ‘do i look scared’ and sam shrugs as if to say ‘i mean yeah kinda’ but then at the end of the ep ellie asks sort of the same question of ‘do i NOT look scared?’ and sam says never and i just love the differences there
i’m not gonna say much on henry and sam’s death, other people have already shared my thoughts in better, more articulate posts than what i can write. while i do wish sam and henry had a happier ending i don’t really know how they could’ve changed the story without impacting that narrative beat. and while i wish that didn’t come at the expense of black people i can’t say i expected them to do anything different. just a small summary of my thoughts
overall did like this ep better than the last, tho the complaint about pacing feeling too fast is still there and sadly i’m expecting it to only get worse through the rest of the season :/

Sitting in on the Zoom for Kathleen Belew's and Erika Lee's talk at the Newberry Library and I wish there was a transcript...Belew mentioned something along the lines of that it's not enough anymore for historians to ask where we are and how we got here, and I wish I had a copy of the fuller context because my memory is bad but I also want to think about this more

inaccurate fingers; desire so dreary
a perverse fancy for twilight, for puttering about with straining eyes and inaccurate fingers in the dusk 1 silently puttering about after her, drove Kate almost to despair 2 eagerly, clumsily puttering about in his desire 3
— these three instances, in Little Ships, A Novel by Kathleen Norris (1925) : link their fuller contexts (and links to hathitrust scan) below —
1 Her grandmother was in the kitchen, crooning like an old sorceress over the preparation of coffee and eggs for Harry. Harry had a night-watchman’s job at the moment, and consequently slept all afternoon. Mrs. Walsh, and Maggie too, had a perverse fancy for twilight, for puttering about with straining eyes and inaccurate fingers in the dusk, and Kate’s first move to-night, as usually, was to flash on the lights. p 293 : link
2 Two or three days of Lizzie, silently puttering about after her, drove Kate almost to despair. Lizzie made herself useful, and was sweet, if silent and timid, with the children. Her bony, cool hands were always ready to help Kate with bed-making, with raking, with little meals, or little bathing-suits.       But she was so dreary... p 381 : link
this from chapter 27, in which it comes out that Lizzie hadn’t known what marriage involved — sexually — had taken a vow, finds intimacy distasteful, prefers to sleep separately from her husband. —
“I tell you I didn’t know anything, and it’s my affair and Martin’s anyway, Kate!” Lizzie said, goaded into anger. “Mama was never one to talk about marriage and babies and all that,” she continued, in a slightly more conciliatory and faintly apologetic tone. “And there was no one else I could talk to. For all I knew, babies came ——” She paused. “For all I knew, men ——” she began again and paused again.       Kate knew that the indication of utter and virgin ignorance was true. Lizzie had probably known as much of marriage, upon her wedding day, as upon the day of her birth. Such subjects were utterly unknown, in the clean, pious, gentle circle of her early years. The aged mother would have been morally, mentally, yes, and even physically unable to mention them to her daughter. Books touching upon them, conversation through which they might become familiar, were abhorrent to purity like this.       Lizzie had taught primary grades all her life. But there was nothing in that well-thumbed little curriculum of greatest common divisor and Spencerian loops to open her eyes. She had very probably come to Mart, Kate reflected, believing vaguely that the laws of calm logic and dispassionate decision would regulate her married as her single life.       “Oh, yes, I told him, the day of Mama’s funeral, when he wanted to marry me right off,” Lizzie answered. And Kate detected a pathetic note of relief in her voice, as if whe were glad to be speaking, even of the unspeakable, at last. “I told him I’d taken a vow, when I was confirmed,” she pursued, “that married or single, I’d preserve— I’d do what I told you—”       “How old were you when you were confirmed?”       “I was twelve.”       “Yes, and how much did you know about life?”       “Well, nothing, I suppose,” Lizzie conceded. “But I read about plenty of the Saints that did that.”       “You mean married, and then lived a single life?” “Well, yes,” said Lizzie, and fell into a mild silence, a silence that had something almost triumphant in it, as if she had proved her point. “My own saint did that,” she added, contentedly.       “Yes, but after she’d had four children!”       “Well, that wouldn’t make any difference,” Lizzie said, with a look of surprise.       “But, Lizzie, what about your marriage vow? The vow of an ignorant little girl of twelve amounts to nothing, you weren’t even legally of age then! But the vow of a woman, who solemnly swears——”       “But Martin understood the whole of it, and agreed, beside my mother’s coffin, that he’d let me have the say of it!” the other woman argued, readily.       “A lot he knew about it!” Kate muttered, confirmed by this remark in an old belief that Martin’s youth had been as strangely innocent and protected as that of his wife, and convinced that his utter ignorance of the ways of woman was at least partly accountable for the whole state of affairs.       There was a look of serene and stubborn fanaticism in Lizzie’s eye; Kate knew that look... pp 383-384 : link
3       But now Rob had started for Los Angeles to attend a conference, and Ellen said that somehow she had felt homesick for Mama. So here they all were, and Mollie was ecstatically happy padding about making them welcome...       “Well, then, I’m going to telephone John, and we’ll stay, too,” Kate stated, firmly, and felt a little twinge of heartache at beholding her uncle’s look of deep satisfaction.       “Do that, Kate. That’s what the big place is for!” said Peter, eagerly, clumsily puttering about in his desire to prove how welcome they were.       Mollie sent a careful message to the kitchen... p 412 : link

Little Ships is a story of an Irish — Irish Catholic — family “in trouble.” See Ann C. Rose, Beloved Strangers: Interfaith Families in Nineteenth-century America (2001) : link (snippets and longer passages)
The novel was serialized in at least one Catholic newspaper. A portion of chapter 30 (containing the long extract above, re: absence of conjugal relations) ran in The Catholic Transcript (Hartford, Connecticut; Thursday, April 25, 1929) : 8 : link for all mentions of Little Ships therein, see search results : link
The title of the novel comes from the song that concludes it — “So all the little ships come sailing home across the sea, Their voyage safely ended, their way they’ve wended       Home where they would be...” p441 : link
Kathleen Norris (1880-1966) was a much-read and published novelist and journalist of her time. wikipedia : link She is treated at some length in the second edition of Grant Overton, his The Women Who Make Our Novels (1928) : 227-242 : link
See also her Noon : An Autobiographical Sketch (1925) : link
Kathleen Norris has — inexplicably — not appeared earlier in this project: the word “puttering” appears in several of her works.
