OC Whump day four! Magic sick bus
Based off of a Tumblr post by justalittlehoarse
If anyone is confused, this takes place in an AU where wolves are a normal part of human society, pups go to school and most adults have jobs.
Ao3 link:
The trip had gone smoothly at first, the human children and the pups were enjoying it thoroughly. Even the adult chaperones, human and wolf, were having fun.
The school that middle schoolers from the clans went to had decided to take a field trip to an aquarium, where they had gotten to taste certain exotic fish and sushi. Much to everyone's delight.
The entire school was having a blast, although Shadow was slightly annoyed at the fact that they were all staring at trapped fish. He ended up threatening kids who started to tap on the glass.
However, Ajax still felt like the trip had gone smoothly. He and the other two chaperones from the clans, Shadow, and Atomic sat in the back of the bus, watching the children through small souvenirs at each other.
It wasn’t until they heard screaming that Ajax realized something was up. One of the human children at the front of the bus, who had been complaining of stomach pain, had puked all over the seat.
His friend was screaming for help and Ajax watched a human chaperone run up to them.
“Poor kid,” Ajax said sympathetically.
“Yeah, wonder what made him sick?” Atomic said.
Shadow just looked straight ahead, saying nothing, Ajax guessed he was angry at the human, probably thinking about how he deserved it for tapping on the fish tanks.
Ajax had thought nothing of it, then the second kid vomited. Soon half the bus was complaining of stomach pain and nausea. That was when Ajax started to get worried.
“We should check on the pups,” He suggested.
Atomic was already starting to walk around the bus, talking to their clanmates. Ajax was about to follow him when he realized that Shadow had not yet moved.
“You okay?” Ajax asked, hoping his feeling of dread was wrong.
“Fine,” Shadow snapped, getting up to follow the younger wolf.
“Ajax!” He heard his name called out by Arctic, his apprentice. “Scorch isn’t feeling well!”
“Spirits,” Ajax moved as quickly as he could though the jumble of worried teachers and children.
By the time he got to Arctic and Scorch’s seat he saw Scorch heave and spill his stomach contents to the ground, letting out a whimper at the cramping pain suddenly appearing in his gut.
Arctic looked like he was about to be sick as well. Ajax didn’t actually think he was going to be, then his stomach lurched and the pup clamped his mouth shut.
Ajax didn’t have time to worry about that as Atomic called to him, “Ajax! Birch and Ace just got sick!” He sounded worried.
“Shoot, what in the world?” Was this all sympathy? Was there some new virus that caused puking at the moment of infection and was very easily spread?
He heard the pained whimper of a pup as Arctic lost the battle with his stomach and heaved, hurling out the food he had eaten at the aquarium.
Despite the fact that he had just vomited minutes ago, Scorch started to lick Arctic to comfort him. Before he had to lean away as his intestines spewed liquid up his throat.
Now the entire bus was in clamor, half of the kids had already puked and the other half were clearly about to. Ajax watched pups hunching over churning stomachs before emptying them violently on the bus floor.
Atomic ran up to him, and Ajax could tell he didn’t feel well either, but hen was trying to hide it. “I think it was the fish we ate,” Atomic said, “The teachers are getting ill as well.”
He could be dense but he was actually not bad at figuring things out when he needed to. Which was definitely now.
“Right, that makes perfect sense,” Ajax nodded, “So, it’s just food poisoning?”
Atomic nodded but didn’t open his mouth.
“Did the bus driver eat the fish?” Ajax asked, suddenly terrified.
“Not as much as everyone else,” Atomic said, he was starting to pant. “I think-” A painful lurch stopped Atomic in his tracks, he doubled over, heaving until stomach contents spilled from his mouth.
Ajax grimaced in sympathy, “It’s alright,” He reassured, licking Atomic’s head. “Go lay down at the back of the bus, I can organize everyone with Shadow.”
Atomic gulped, “No, I-” Once more he was cut off as a surge of vomit shot up his throat and splattered to the floor. Gasping he whimpered, “O-okay.”
Ajax turned back to Arctic and Scorch, Arctic was curled into a pained ball with Scorch looking queasy but trying to comfort his boyfriend.
“Scorch, how do you feel?” Ajax hated to ask him to help but something told him he was about to lose Shadow’s help, and he couldn’t organize a whole bus on his own.
Scorch swallowed, “I-I can help,” He declared.
Ajax nodded, hoping the pup was telling the truth. “Okay, take Arctic to the back and lay him in one of the seats. We’re putting the wolves in the back and the humans at the front.”
Scorch only nodded his head, not daring to open his mouth.
Ajax continued moving throughout the bus, transferring humans and wolves. The smell was beginning to get overwhelming. Luckily, most of the students had managed to vomit in bags, leaving the driver to merely stop so Ajax could empty them in the nearest trash can.
While he was doing so, he noticed the driver clamber out of the bus and hurl his stomach out all over the grass.
Great.
Ajax returned to the bus, wincing in sympathy as he heard several students lose their lunch in a plastic bag. Scorch was walking around offering crackers and bags, but Ajax saw him trembling with every step. Gulping down the vomit that was clearly struggling to escape.
“Scorch, you’ve done enough, go lay down,” Ajax said walking up to the pup.
Scorch looked like he was about to argue, but he clamped his mouths shut suddenly and nodded, desperately trying to keep his stomach from forcing anything else up his throat.
The bus was full of groaning students and staff, sickly gurgling noises sounded from all around him, and the sound of retching and liquid splattering into plastic filled the air.
Ajax hurried around, now the only one able to help out, he had no clue we’re Shadow had gone. He had to clean, and comfort, and help. All the while, making sure they didn’t crash on the side of the road, as the bus driver continued to puke as he drove.
All in all, the field trip had gone from smooth to a disaster, and he still couldn’t not find Shadow!
He wasn’t mad, only worried. Shadow would do anything to avoid showing weakness.
“Ajax,” He heard the whimper of a pup, immediately he rushed to their side, abandoning what he had been cleaning before.
It was Moonfur, she was curled around her lurching stomach, letting out whimpers of pain as it gurgled and tried to force her to spew out what was making it sick.
“Firefur,” Was all she managed to get out before swallowing and squeezing her eyes shut at the cramps ripping through her abdomen. Moonfur had one of the worst cases Ajax had seen so far. The poisoning seemed not to rely on how much you had eaten, but on what you had eaten.
Moonfur groaned and forced out, “Firefur, he’s got a fever,” Before a cry was torn from her throat and her stomach spasmed, her mouth flying open and spewing out chunks of fish and acid.
She curled up tighter, whimpering and trying anything to ease her stomach. Ajax wanted to comfort her, but he heard Firefur’s pained moans behind him and quickly turned to the other apprentice.
Firefur indeed had a fever, he was sweating and barely conscious. “Ajax!” He heard his name called again, spinning around he rushed over to Red who lay curled next to his sibling.
Ace was shaking, their entire body seemed to be convulsing. Tears fell silently from their eyes, their retching had rendered their voice useless. Their pelt shimmered with sweat and as Ajax watched, their gut twisted, letting out a horrible, sickly gargle before shooting hot liquid up the pup’s throat.
Ace retched, their stomach spasming just as Moonfur’s had. Ajax was suddenly overwhelmed with a feeling of helplessness. He could not comfort Ace, he had no idea what to do, outside of keeping the place clean.
Red was licking his sibling’s fur, trying to offer comfort, even though he himself was groaning as his intestines twisted and cramped.
“Did they eat with Moonfur?” Ajax asked, desperate to find a connection and figure out who was going to get the most ill.
Red swallowed and nodded, suddenly looking very sick. The apprentice jerked his head away from Ace, still shaking violently on the floor, and spewed a fishy stream of liquid from his throat.
Gagging, he looked back up, trying to fully answer Ajax. But his stomach cramped again and it was all he could do not to scream, tears leaping into his eyes.
It killed Ajax to see his clan in so much pain, he wanted to stop and comfort every one of them, but he couldn’t. He had to go back to Firefur and figure out who else was going to get violently ill.
“I’m sorry, Red. You’re going to need to comfort them, I have to help the others,” Ajax said, his voice pleading.
Red just nodded again, too nauseated to even look up without risking expelling his stomach contents.
How had things gone bad so quickly?
Ajax rushed back over to Firefur, now dry heaving, curled up on the stained carpet.
. . .
The next few hours were a blur, Ajax was surrounded by puking animals and humans. The smell was horrible, despite his attempts to clean, and he had passed panic long ago.
It turned out, Ace, Moonfur, Firefur and apparently Shadow had all eaten from the same fish. Ace, Moonfur, and Firefur were lying on the ground in excruciating agony, moans falling from their lips, stomachs letting out wet, ill-sounding gurgles as their insides twisted and were spewed from their mouths.
Ajax had found Shadow long ago, the wolf had been helping out and avoiding Ajax as he was clearly just as ill, if not more than, the others.
He had found Shadow struggling to stand, stomach emitting a sound like water boiling over. He was heaving, gut wrenching spasms wracking his body and leaving him trying to keep down the vomit brewing in his churning intestines.
He had been horribly unsuccessful. And, once more, as Ajax watched, the powerful beta of the clan was violently ill. Tears streaming from his eyes, stomach tightening into agonizing cramps, a scream was ripped from his throat.
That had been enough to tell Ajax that, whatever this was, it was bad. Shadow never cried out, except maybe in Blizzard’s presence. He had been slammed against trees, spine nearly shattering, torn apart from the chest to kidneys, and still had made no sound except to cuss his assaulter out.
It was when Shadow accepted Ajax’s help that he started to feel ill himself. He had been on the bus, now jerking as the driver suffered from retching dry heaves, for hours. He had never liked cars, always getting motion sickness. The stench of vomit filled the air, and the sound of others around him spilling their stomachs out did not help. Anxiety was churning his gut, causing him to catch his breath as a wave of nausea rolled over him.
Ajax stopped, he had to take a break. It wouldn’t do anyone any good if he got sick now.
He felt the overwhelming urge to empty his stomach, the queasiness quickly shifting to horrible nausea. It only got worse as he stood there listening to his clanmate’s retching and groaning. He could feel the bus moving and his stomach started to churn faster.
He felt like his intestines had decided to go on a rollercoaster in his gut. A jet of hot liquid rocketed up his throat and he gulped quickly, forcing it back down to his stomach. He felt it settle uneasily before his stomach left out a wet gurgle and launched it back up his throat.
Ajax swallowed it back down again, it only made the nausea worse, but he had to push through. His clanmates needed him.
. . .
Finally, the bus driver drove them to a rest stop, encouraging everyone to get some food before they all drove the last stretch home.
No one wanted to eat, including Ajax. He was the one to leap out of the bus, his stomach did not appreciate it, and grab packets of crackers and bottles of water to bring back for the others on the bus.
He didn’t know what he should eat, but decided on something called jerky. It looked like meat, couldn’t be that bad, right?
The moment he reentered the bus he felt his stomach start to churn even faster. Nausea rose in his throat, but he was determined not to puke while passing out everyone’s crackers.
Atomic noticed his slow, deliberate movements. And could tell that he was in pain as well.
“Ajax, you should take a break,” He said softly when his boyfriend reached him. He had been trying to help, but his stomach had had a different idea, forcing him to retch so many times he could barely stand.
“I did,” Was all Ajax said before moving on.
By the time he was finished, his gut had twisted into such a tight knot he almost wanted to throw up, just to alleviate the churning pain.
He knew he wasn’t ill, just motion sick and anxious, both things he had vomited from before. But he was afraid to do so again, maybe it had to do with the pain everyone else was in?
Tearing into the jerky package, deciding to get it over with, he bit into the tough meat and forced it down his throat.
He felt it tumble down his esophagus before coming to an uneasy rest in his flipping stomach. He took another bite, and that was all it took.
His intestines twisted, letting out a sickly gargle, before exploding. He hunched over as hot liquid surged up his throat. This time he couldn’t stop it as the undigested jerky and stomach acid started to spew from his mouth.
His gut lurched, emptying itself twice before reducing him to gagging heaves.
“Told ya,” Atomic’s pained voice reached his ears.
Ajax could only groan as his stomach clenched and forced him to retch again.
He knew it wasn’t that long, but it felt like forever until his insides settled. Stomach still upset and churning, but he stopped heaving and was able to walk around, helping his clan again.
. . .
The rest of the ride seemed to mellow out. Less people were getting sick and Atomic had recovered enough to help out.
The first thing he did was make sure Ajax was alright.
“You’re shaking,” He observed.
“So are you,” Ajax responded.
“I’m ill, you’re not,” Atomic countered.
“Just drop it, please?” Ajax begged, feeling his stomach start to bubble again.
Atomic nodded, “Fine, how much longer do you think it’ll take us to get to the forest?”
“I don’t know, we just need to focus on making sure no one dies,” Ajax said stoically.
“Wait, someone could die!” Atomic cried.
“I’m kidding, calm down,” Ajax sighed, he still felt as if his stomach were twisting and flipping in his gut.
Atomic saw him swallow. “You still haven’t taken a break,” He said softly.
“No time, let’s check on Moonfur and Firefur,” Ajax said quickly, starting to make his way through the crowd of students.
Moonfur was still lying, curled in a tight ball, legs pulled up to her stomach, paws digging into her churning gut in an attempt to ease it. Clearly, she was not succeeding. A groan slipped from her lips, turning into a gagging retch before bile and acid dripped from her mouth. She whimpered, stomach burning and cramping as it tried to force out anything it could find in her intestines.
Firefur was barely conscious, his stomach seemed to be jerking up and down as if convulsing. Whimpers and groans escaped his mouth and chunks of food were being forced up his throat every few minutes.
Shadow lay curled around his apprentice, licking him and uncharacteristically trying to comfort him in any way he could. Despite the fact that his face was screwed up in a grimace and he kept swallowing, trying desperately to keep his insides down. He was constantly failing, having to curl away from Firefur and empty chunks of food, bile, and acid to the bus floor.
The whole bus was still filled with the sound of people and animals retching, of liquid hitting the ground and plastic, of groans, and of stomachs emitting horrible, wet, sickly gurgling noises.
Ajax felt like he was going to be sick again. Watching Moonfur writhing on the ground, Firefur barely able to move as digested food was forced up his throat, and Shadow squeezing his eyes shut in a desperate attempt to keep his stomach down, Did not help.
He felt liquid start to push its way up his throat, his intestines were twisting tighter. A soft groan fell from his lips as he felt the liquid rush into his mouth. He forced it back down, gulping and feeling it lay painfully on his churning stomach.
“Atomic,” Shadow gasped, his voice much weaker than Ajax had ever heard, “Can you help Glacier?”
Atomic glanced back at Glacier and Max. Glacier was shaking, body spasming as chunks of food were spayed from her mouth. Max lay beside her, clearly trying to comfort her. He failed as his stomach lurched and forced him to curl into a painful ball.
“Yeah,” Atomic nodded, glancing at Ajax who was still trying to keep the liquid from rising any higher.
Atomic hurried over to the two pups. “Hey, guys-” He was cut off as he felt something rush up his throat and start to spill into his mouth “Sorry-” He choked out before lurching forward, chunks of fish spilling from his mouth.
This field trip was indeed a nightmare.
Atomic looked up, panting and gasping for breath. “S-sorry,” He repeated, swallowing, “I wish I could help you, but we can’t really do anything except ride it out.” He tried to smile but it came out more like a weak grimace as he felt his gut start to churn faster.
A moan was ripped from Glacier's mouth and she jerked forward, dry heaves wracking her small body. Beside her Max whimpered curling tighter in a ball, small body lurching with his rebellious stomach.
Behind him, Ajax heard someone else calling his name. Scorch was crying out, painful cramps grabbing his stomach and refusing to let go. However, he was the one calling him. Arctic’s entire body jerked and heaved, quite like Ace’s, blood was spilling from the pup's mouth.
Fear caused adrenaline to push the liquid down Ajax’s throat as he dashed over to the apprentice.
“Ajax, he just started-” Scorch squeezed his eyes shut and a stream of fish filled vomit exploded out of the poor pup’s mouth. He moaned, trying to curl up while still staying wrapped around Arctic as his stomach lurched and cramped. He swallowed thickly, “Just started-” He was once again unable to finish as a cry was ripped from his throat. Tears were falling from his eyes as he struggled to explain what had happened to Ajax.
“Alright, I know. Uhh, he probably has a bleed, probably tore something puking so much,” Ajax stammered, he had never wanted Shard to be here more.
Then, suddenly, as if the spirits had answered his prayers, Blizzard’s voice filled the bus.
“What in all hell happened in here?”
“Oh, spirits!” Rusty cried, hearing the moaning of the students.
“I thought you guys were going on a field trip to the aquarium not to Anthrax Island,” Blizzard said, but concern had creeped into his voice.
The next thirty minutes were spent with Blizzard snapping at humans to move and unloading pups off the bus. Their parents or parent figures were waiting for them. Ajax watched as pups ran to their parents, tears of pain streaming from their eyes, before most of them were sick all over the ground.
Shadow was clearly trying to keep up the facade of being fine, it was shattered the moment he doubled over and emptied his stomach on the ground for what was likely the tenth time today.
The adrenaline started to recede and the only warning before Ajax hunched over and spewed sick all over the grass was a twisting, churning feeling in his gut.
“Told you you should have taken a break,” Atomic laughed, walking up to his boyfriend and brushing his muzzle against his.
“Shut up,” Ajax gasped.
But the clan was safe, the field trip had gone from great to horrible in a matter of seconds, but the clans, as always, had pulled through. They would not be killed by a simple human illness.
