Monday

Let the adventure begin. Six o´clock usually happens only once in the day, towards evening and getting up whilst it´s still dark is not one of my more enjoyable treats but I am a happy riser, at my age I´m just happy to wake up!

We´re meant to be on the 0718 Manchester Airport train from York and looking forward to starting the journey.

The plan is to fly to Bilbao in Northern Spain, take the bus to Santander and overnight in the Central Albergue then set off walking the Camino Norte where we left off last year. We’ll follow that with a cheap flight down to Lisbon for no other reason than I’ve never been there before then either road, rail or air down to Albufiera on the Southern Coast of Portugal for Costa del Folk, our bi-annual fix of music. The name of the festival is a little misleading as the content is a broad mix of all genres and usually experienced whilst lying in the sun or with feet lightly dipping into an open air pool or drifting in and out of a rhapsody on a sun-bed. The Camino element is another leg for me and a joining up of different tracks for the Pilgrim as she has already done the Primitivo which is an offshoot of the Norte that hugs the coast.

The sun is making an appearance as Bridie drops us at York Station and I, once again, look on in amazement at the machine that is our rail system. The bike racks on the station are full and I think of the emotional farewell to Otto yesterday and Kathy the day before. I’m not good with farewells, especially if you’ve no idea if you’ll see the person again. Both Otto and Kathy were only meant to be acquaintances for a couple of legs of their Coast to Coast walks; however, the warmth and nature of both of them coupled with the adversity of two astonishing storms has created a far closer relationship with both of them and I feel a fleeting sense of loss. The train from York to Manchester Airport is quite full but we manage to get our seats although we’re told later that the reservation system has failed and as the carriage fills as we pass through Leeds and beyond we feel lucky.

Manchester airport is quite busy and they seem to be having issues with security as we’re redirected to another basement room where there are long, zig-zagging lines of people. The staff are upbeat and manage the situation well but it doesn’t detract from the fact that it’s a pain.

The EasyJet flight was good and made up the time that was lost pre-take off so we arrive just about on time. On exit we make our way to the travel desk to acquire the bus ticket in to town, we need it as soon as possible as our coach to Santander will leave at 1700 whether we’re on it or not. There’s no need to worry in this instance as the journey takes less than half an hour and drops us at the same depot as the ALSA bus that will take us onwards, we even have time to visit a restaurant/bar!

The buses run like clockwork, usually bang on time and easily identifiable and even when you cock it up by trying to board the wrong one the driver couldn’t be more helpful in redirecting us.

We’re in the Santander Central Hostel and at 25€ per person per night including breakfast it’s at the top end of albergue range but it’s clean and there are sheets and blankets. It’s full of other peregrines all with a single objective, to reach Santiago de Compostela at some point.

My objective is to see the countryside and enjoy the weather, no more, no less and I’m looking forward to tomorrow.

We reach the terminus and everything comes flooding back, the terminus is definitely in the middle of Santander and the Hostel is definitely not far away. It’s also not good value for money when you consider there are two of us and we’re housed in nothing more than an albergue facility; don’t get me wrong, I’ve payed £100 or £150 per night (or rather, the company has) but I draw the line at what is an over priced bunkhouse although Angel, the owner/manager seems friendly enough and everything is clean.

We take advice for the bright lights of Santander and after a short wander we find what we’re looking for, a bar selling pinxos which is the Basque equivalent of tapas. A brief conversation in pigeon Spanish later and I establish that the tortilla is indeed ‘sin lactosa’ or without milk and, as a consequence, safe for me to eat. The Pilgrim goes for the heavy duty ‘con lactosa’ that includes blue cheese and a strange mix of caramelised onion that’s moe like a jam layer that sits between the cheese, the potatoes and the egg. After a few mouthfuls of both we establish that my traditional, reduced threat variety has the edge but both are devoured with relish along with more than one wine and cerveza (not in the same glass).

A couple of hours sets us up with the nightcap that is required and we settle in the dorm ready for me to give the other occupants the benefit of my nocturnal moose impersonations.

The Pilgrim has taken the top bunk and hung a walking stick from a hook that’s been carefully screwed to the wall for the purpose of creating a handy resting place making it easily accessible for the prodding of the moose-man if/when the volume becomes worthy of a risk assessment and aurally damaging. She’s under strict instructions to avoid my face and genital areas, other than that, a prod could land anywhere – and does! She’s quite skilled at this and It doesn’t wake me up but does silence the moose impression for a while and by 2 am everyone is happy and asleep.

Tuesday

We get up late in the morning, it’s gone 0830 and we’re normally up and ready to walk by now but the weather is kind and unlikely to go over 24 degrees which means that walking at midday is entirely acceptable.

Breakfast is included in our fee and a couple of slices of toast later and we’re ready to roll.

The first part of the walk is through the suburbs of Santander and whilst it’s uninteresting in terms of scenery it is interesting how the city works. We’re also greeted many times by local people who recognise the rucksack and pained expression and greet us with the words ‘Buen Camino’. Literally, it means ‘good way’ but the extended meaning is ‘Have a good pilgrimage and may it go well’ it also makes us feel good and we reply with ‘Gracias’ or ‘Buenos Dias’ and it leaves us with a smile.

As we leave the city with the Parque del Dr. Morales on our right we note the traffic activity is reducing and within another 50 metres we’re on to a track that follows the railway giving us views of the mountain ranges in the distance.

It’s late morning now and the sun quite strong, we are passing through numerous tiny villages some of which are undefined save for the sign with the village name and a line through it to say we’re now leaving. Some of them consist of half a dozen houses spread out over a mile so it can be quite a surprise that we were ever in it let alone leaving it!

There is quite a lot of road slog although there is little or no traffic then we arrive at the rather charmingly named Estacion de Boo and decide on taking the train to the next station. It takes about 4 minutes, covers about 3 miles and takes us across the river and this is the real bonus as it saves us the best part of 10 kilometres (6 miles) of following the river inland to get to a footbridge that is safe. There is another option and it is one that we were going to attempt. It’s against the law but the locals do it, they cross the river via a one-and-a-half metre wide foot-way next to the train track. The trains are purported to run every 30 minutes and it takes only 5 minutes on foot; however, on an arse-covering principle, I recommend that you DON’t use this as you could end up hurt, dead or locked-up – or an unpleasant mix of all three.

We arrive at Estación de Mogro and the Pilgrim spots the yellow arrows pointing in the opposite direction what we expected but we take that route anyway as it runs parallel to the Camino which is on the other side of a significant hill but merges at a point 3 kilometres along the road. At the station we had covered 18km (11 miles) and the map is telling us there are another 7km (just under 5 miles) to Cudon and it’s across some hills. The upside is the scenery and beautiful weather, the downside is another 7km!

The Camino follows several roads that wend their way across the hills and some of the views are very special especially where the countryside allows us to see the Atlantic; it’s currently placid but it is the Bay of Biscay and getting angry is its only pleasure.

We’re at a junction when a Spanish man in one of those utility vehicles about the size of a bus opens his window to help. We’re OK with the directions but he confirms that we’re using the right route and also describes where the accommodation is that we need to be looking for, “Behind the Church”, he repeats and we nod our thanks. When people see the rucksack and the shell they respond with kindness and help that makes you feel good but the best is yet to come.

The next few kilometres is covered relatively quickly although we do take twenty minutes out to stop at a roadside bar to slick the dust.

It’s been a bit of a slog and we’re about ready to stop when we enter the hostal and ask about a room.

“Los Siento, Completo”, (Sorry, we’re full), was the response and after 25 kilometres over a numerous hills under a full sun it wasn’t what we wanted to hear.

Then something that happens only occasionally happened, “Espera aquí, por favor” (Wait here please). Then she rang a number of other hotels and found one that she then negotiated a “Pilgrim’s” price 45 euros for a double room (down from 65). She then got her husband up from his siesta and asked us if we’d like a lift!

The journey is across town and ends up being 7 or 8 kms which would be a 16 kilometre round trip. As we alighted The Pilgrim whispers I think that was a ‘brown’ journey referring to the colour of the ten euro note and I couldn’t agree more so I offered him the note as soon as he opened the rear door to retrieve our rucksacks…and he refused! I offered again and repeated “Quisiera” (I would like) but he was having none of it and refused again then he shakes our hands and wishes us “Buen Camino”) and is off.

Such kindness and generosity are a feature when you travel and it saddens me when others are ripped off or robbed as we tend to find more positives than negatives.

The hotel is more than adequate and the meal that we have is good value especially for a hotel so we’re smiling.

Tomorrow is another day on the Camino Norte on the north coast of northern Spain.

The beginning — Boston/Barcelona

Hola/bonjour/hey y'all!!!!!!

I have had a really insane 2 weeks since my arrival in Europe and I haven’t even thought about blogging. However, I did it last year when I was in France and it was a great way for me to process the events and emotions I was going through, as well as a way to keep my peeps at home updated on ma life. But now that I am all settled into my new French apartment, I actually have some free time to write. So voila!! Welcome to my blog!!

Let me start off by explaining what I am doing here for those who don’t know. This year, I will be participating in a French program for foreigners at a large university in Montpellier, France. The program is designed to improve each student’s level of French to a point where they would be able to take normal college classes (taught in French) to pursue a degree. So my overall plan is to complete this year-long program, then eventually enroll in a university for an additional 3 years to get my bachelors. It will definitely be a challenge, but by doing this, I will be saving an insane amount of money (tuition is about $250 per semester) and mastering a second language. This past summer, about 90% of the money I earned working went into savings. I had to do a ton of paperwork (all in French, might I add), drive all the way to Atlanta and back for a visa appointment that lasted 10 minutes, hire translators on multiple occasions, and decide on an apartment without being able to even see it in person. This has definitely be a challenge so far and I don’t doubt it’s only going to get more difficult, but I think that all the work will pay off and that this will make for a really cool experience.

I left home the first week of August, from where I flew to Boston. I was an emotional wreck the few days leading up to my departure and I cried a lot, especially when my Saltwater Cowboys pals threw me a going away party, when I had to say goodbye to my mama, and when my dad and brother dropped me off at the airport. Even though I was sad to leave, knowing that I was leaving behind an important chapter of my life, I also knew I was about to start a super exciting new one and I was looking forward to it!

I had never been to Boston before, but after finding a very cheap flight from there to Barcelona (which is very close to Montpellier), I decided to make a little trip out of it. I stayed there for 3 days, and I did a good bit of exploring solo. I did a walking tour of the historical sites of the city on an app I downloaded on my phone, tried a lobster roll (apparently a very important aspect of visiting Boston), and went on a whale-watching cruise where we probably saw 7 or 8 humpback whales. It was actually one of my favorite things I have done in the past 2 weeks. I turned out really liking the city!! On my last day, I went to the airport in the evening to board my overnight flight to Barcelona.

I absolutely love flying, but I have never had such a god-awful flight in my life. I was in the very last row, in the middle section of seats, in the middle seat. The guy next to me had the worst B.O. I have ever smelled. Since I was in the back, I was right next to where the crew stayed, and they were required to leave the lights on. I was also right next to a bathroom which was fun. I probably got a total of 30 minutes of sleep. But the flight was $150, so I don’t know how much I can really complain….

I arrived in Barcelona on the morning of August 7th and I was very very sleepy but very very excited!! I had only been to the city once, but it was at the end of my France trip last year when I had absolutely no money left, so I usually just stayed at my hostel and hung out with the people there. This time, I had money and a great person to spend time with, so I was pumped to see the city.

I was warmly greeted by my wonderful Colombian friend Jorge, who is now living in Barcelona. We spent the afternoon catching up and napping at his apartment so we would have the energy to explore the city in the evening. We went out for tapas, then bar hopping. It was really cool staying with a local because he knew all the cheapest, coolest bars and restaurants to visit. Some that we visited included a fairytale themed bar (looked like a Disney attraction inside), a record-themed bar with great music, and a bar with an actual skate park in the middle. However, our fun night took a turn for the worst when at one bar, when Jorge and I were a little too tipsy and very distracted, the next thing I knew, my purse and his phone disappeared off the table we were sitting at. Someone must have very sneakily picked them up from right next to us when they knew we weren’t looking.

We looked everywhere for our belongings and talked the bartenders to see if they had cameras (which they didn’t), and we eventually had to accept that our stuff was gone and we weren’t getting it back. It was a very sad way to end such a fun night—and a weird way to start my time Europe—but we tried our hardest to not let it get to us too much. The next day, we filed a police report just in case anything were to be turned in, but we didn’t have high expectations. In my purse, I had my brand new iPhone 7, wallet with drivers license and debit card, about 300 euros of cash, and 2 new pairs of headphones. Of course now, I feel like an idiot for having carried all that around with me to begin with. I was just really lucky that I took my passport out of the bag before leaving the apartment that evening. I would have been screwed!!!

Despite the unfortunate event, I still planned on staying with Jorge for a week before heading to France, I just had to depend on him for all of our expenses (with promises to pay him back of course). We had an amazing week exploring the city. More than anything, we walked around, did some sightseeing, ate greasy delicious Spanish food and drank at plenty of bars. (I definitely took advantage of being able to drink legally.) There were multiple occasions where we had intentions of doing “touristy things,” but instead, I forced him to watch New Girl with me over a bottle of rose.

We had a really lovely time and I absolutely fell in love with Barcelona. Other than the robbery, the only negative part was the fact that I know no Spanish. I don’t know how I still don’t know any after having studied it for a year, spending 5 weeks in Colombia, and doing hours and hours of Duolingo, but I really suck at it. There were a few times we would meet up with Jorge’s friends and they would speak primarily in Spanish and I would just listen and understand as much as I could, but it was usually about 2% of the conversation. The trip definitely encouraged me to learn the language, especially considering I am only a 4 hour bus ride away from the city and 2 1/2 hours from the Spanish border.

Even though getting my purse stolen sucked really, really, really bad, it definitely taught me a lesson about robbery in Europe. It’s not something we really have to worry about in Charleston, especially not Mount Pleasant, but it’s very common here and you always have to keep an eye on your things. It also was a reminder that bad things happen, you just have to keep your cool and remember you will be okay! It all worked out alright, even though I’m short a few hundred dollars, I survived!!!

After that, I could elect to add them to my policy or not. I had a baby 30 days ago and they're denying his claims. I've called Humana (a new insurance for me since the birth of my first children) and they assured me that the claims for him would be paid, and that they would NOT add him to my policy (he has separate insurance). I was just at Humana's website searching for a provider (for myself) and it appears they've added him and made my deductible of $2,000 go up to $4,000 (family coverage). Is this correct? I thought it was state or federal law or something that newborns are covered under the mother's policy for the first 30 days. Can someone help?

Lastminute.com Group CEO: We Consider Ourselves a Media Company

Lastminute.com Group Chief Executive Fabio Cannavale. The company started life as an Italian flight search engine but is now active in 40 countries. Lastminute.com Group

Skift Take: It's clear from his answers that Fabio Cannavale will keep looking to buy more companies. He thinks there are plenty of companies for sale and he's got some cash on hand.

Lastminute.com Group chief executive Fabio Cannavale has spent the last 13 years transforming a small, low-cost flight search engine based in Italy into a pan-European travel company.

Through a series of acquisitions, the company moved into new countries as well as new areas including package holidays and metasearch. The defining moment came in 2015 when Bravofly Rumbo Group, as it was then known, bought faded dot-com darling Lastminute.com for next to nothing from previous owner Sabre.

Cannavale renamed the parent company Lastminute.com Group and he embarked on a new strategy with a content arm now working alongside its online travel agent and metasearch divisions.

Cannavale recently sat down with Skift to discuss the changes at the business and where it sees its biggest opportunities.

Skift: Let’s look at the Lastminute.com Group as it is now and the story behind it. In the UK and in America, a lot of people are familiar with Lastminute.com, but your company is very different now.

Fabio Cannavale: Our company started out being a very transactional company. By that I mean the background of the founders is that we co-founded eDreams before, so we knew the arena. Then, we saw an opportunity in low-cost flights because there was no one doing that. [Editor’s note: Cannavale worked at eDreams Italy between 1999 and 2001; prior to that he worked as a consultant.]

Skift: Apart from booking direct.

Cannavale: Yeah, but it is not a solution especially when there are so many airlines. On 25 percent of our flight bookings you go with one airline and come back with another one.

This allows us to grow from zero to a good size. Totally self-financed. So we started with 10,000 euros, we were profitable from day one. Then we grew.

Skift: Which brand was that?

Cannavale: Volagratis. Italian flights, only low-cost and we added normal flights, then we had to expand in other markets, like France, Spain, and Germany. Then we bought Rumbo. That was a little bit more of a generalist OTA [online travel agent] so it’s where we started to have hotels and we became a little more, say, generalist because at the end, we saw that was this opportunity. Then we bought metasearch because we thought that metasearch is a booming business. So at the time we bought Jetcost it was about 8 million euros ($9 million) of revenue. This year we’ll be around 60 million euros ($67 million).

Skift: Do you see metasearch as being your future?

Cannavale: I don’t know if it is our future. I think our future is not really only metasearch, it’s probably the packages – that is the business that is growing more. But metasearch, I think, is a good trend. Then I think that basically in the future, metasearch and OTA will merge as a type of business. But for the customer, it doesn’t make any difference. It’s just that today, metasearch has a better pricing proposition, that’s why it grows more.

Skift: Taking a step back again … After you bought Jetcost, then you moved to Lastminute.com, I guess?

Cannavale: Firstly, we understood that really in the future it would be valuable to have flights-plus-hotels, making a package. We started to develop our own technology to do the packaging and to be our tour operator because that is where really there is an advantage. It is localized in Europe, because you get bulk fares for flights, bulk fares for hotels, and so again, you can get a good package and it’s a traditional market in Europe because you still have TUI/First Choice. It is a huge company. We saw this opportunity and Lastminute was available to be bought; it was a very good company because it was 70 percent packages and hotels.

Skift: It’s got a very familiar name in the UK, a very well-known brand, but it wasn’t profitable, really, ever.

Cannavale: Lastminute.com was a very nice company but they never made a profit in their life until this year. But we [Bravofly Rumbo Group] did almost 30 million euros [$30.4 million] of EBITDA.

Skift: You think it was a case of just having the right proposition?

Cannavale: I mean, we bought a company with 650 employees. Today, we have in London only 150. Then Paris, Bangalore, so probably we keep about half, less than half of the employees so 300, more or less. Then, about technology, we took out everything. We just threw away almost everything. We just kept one thing of Lastminute. That is the back end for hotels.

Skift: So what did you buy it for?

Cannavale: For the brand and for the traffic. Again, this is the synergy. Again we saved 40 million euros ($45 million) in one year because of that.

In the UK we’ve grown now in packaging, we’ve grown probably in two years about 30-40 percent despite the pound going down. It means that our platform performs better than the Lastminute one.

Skift: It’s an interesting model because you’ve got different businesses doing different things. You’ve got your online travel agent, your metasearch, tour operating and you’ve recently got involved in the media side. You bought the assets of a company called WAYN. What is the media side of things? Could you define that to me?

Cannavale: We consider ourselves a media company more than a travel company. So people come on our site and they need to have relevant content. Relevant content can be content provided by social media, relevant content could be metasearch, it can even be a lot of branded content that we are producing that people maybe are interested in.

The point is in this kind of business, 2 percent of the people on average buy something. Ninety-eight percent are not buying, but we also have to provide something for these people. Three years ago, probably the non-OTA revenue was around 0 or 5 percent. Last year we had about 25-30 percent of the revenue not coming from OTA.

Skift: That could be metasearch and media?

Cannavale: It’s metasearch and media. Metasearch is growing very well. Media, what does it mean? This is also why we need WAYN, we need content. Having an audience, you have to really to target that audience and to give to each one what they really need.

Skift: You need to know the people well?

Cannavale: So we don’t sell anymore at campaigns on the site. Five years ago, we were selling just banners, so we’d put the banner and that’s it, zero. Both in segmentation of the newsletter and whatever we do on the side, we sell audience profiles. So you want as advertisers these kind of people, OK, I give you these kind of people. If these kind of people are interested in what you’re selling, I think there is a good match.

Skift: What kind of advertisers do you have?

Cannavale: We have 60 percent in sector, so travel, 40 percent outside travel that we have from car companies or telecommunications and then we try also to expand our audience. For example, for us, WAYN is our content factory, we call it a content hub. So it’s the people that really help us to make the content and manage all the activity in content. Then we do also new kinds of activity like now we have a partnership with Spotify. It’s also a content activity. It’s just to give new content. All this is kind of creating something that excites and inspires our customers.

Skift: You seem to me very good at picking up bargains when you buy companies. Lastminute.com was a bargain. WAYN was a bargain. I don’t know how much Jetcost cost, but maybe it was a good deal?

Cannavale: No, Jetcost was expensive. I mean, it depends how they look because for Jetcost we paid a lot in shares. So again, it depends also which is the price for shares because the IPO was very expensive. Today it’s very cheap. Even if we’re trading, we are an entrepreneurial company where 40 percent is still owned by the founders, so it is our own money. Me and my partner.

Skift: What’s the decision behind the listing? Was that just to get more funding?

Cannavale: We had some small shareholders. There was, I think, a very good opportunity to fund the company, to have a secondary exit for some people.

Skift: And the acquisitions?

Cannavale: When we can, we try to buy at a bargain, I agree. Sometimes we make mistakes, like for example last year we wanted to buy Unister. That also was a bargain. It was a very funny story because we offered 20 million euros ($22 million) in September. This company declined an offer of 600 million euros ($672 million) two years ago. One year and a half ago we were very close to buying it for 100 million euros ($112 million). In September, we brought forward this offer of 20 million euros ($22 million). The administrator, he said: ‘No, you have to give me 30 million euros ($34 million).’

We said 30 million euros ($34 million) is too much because it was not very clear how it was going, and then we offered in the end after two months 70 million euros ($78 million), but another company bought it for 75 million euros ($84 million). At the end we are looking at everything. We have a very structural M&A activity. For example, we paid a lot for Rumbo because we paid 80 million euros ($90 million). In the end, it depends. I think we have a good team, we have a very structured team. This year we did an acquisition in Italy for Gartour. That really is not yet an acquisition because it’s renting the company in order to buy. Now there are plenty of companies for sale, plenty of opportunities. We have more than 70 million euros ($78 million) of cash.

Skift: What kind of acquisitions would you look at? Would it be metasearch or an online travel agency?

Cannavale: We are doing a very small acquisition in metasearch. As I said, Germany is a target for us. We lost last year; now there are other good opportunities. Then additional product. We think we have the audience, we have to give to them the right products. Flash sales is something that we are very interested in. This year we were unlucky because we lost two acquisitions. One I think I will regret. The other is VeryChic. I think was too expensive, but VeryChic was a good company. It does flash sales in France, Spain. [Editor’s note: AccorHotels bought VeryChic for an undisclosed figure.]

Skift: Let’s talk about the big competitors and huge companies you’re competing against — Priceline, Expedia I guess. How can you compete with them?

Cannavale: Booking.com is not a competitor, we have a very good partnership with Rentalcars, that is a Priceline company. We have a good partnership with Kayak as a source of traffic. So I see all the Priceline Group more like a partner than like a competitor.

Expedia it’s true, that is a competitor. I mean, if you look at the business we do together with Expedia it is flights and packages. In western Europe it’s true that they’re bigger, but they’re not so much bigger than us and we think maybe in dynamic packages we even have a better solution. In dynamic packages, we are probably one of the largest, maybe after Expedia the second largest in Europe with a good solution. Because we have a lot of local competitors like Promovacances in France, which is the largest. We have On the Beach in the UK, we have Unister in Germany, we are the biggest in Italy. At the end, I think we’re the only one present in all these countries and I think there is a good of economy of scale. Then in flights there are two competitors that are very good, that is eDreams and eTraveli.

Skift: Both eDreams and yourselves have both come up against Ryanair in legal proceedings. They see things very differently than you. You offer flights with them and maybe the return flight is with Easyjet. Is that what the travelers prefer?

Cannavale: I mean, for the traveler, it depends.

The starting point should be someone that gives everything. It could be Google, could be metasearch, could be whichever, but at the end you have to compare.
