friend of roommate from freshman year spotted me and invited me to his b-day party this weekend

#ive only really interacted with the guy a handful of times but he seems really nice and chill #junior year and 1st time ive actually been invited to a party in college #part of me don wanna but i made this my big 'become slightly more extroverted and outgoing" year #my 'go out and experience the world' year instead of bouncing between my dorm bedroom to class to home like i've been doing #so i gotta i will you will do this you will go to this guys party #you will not die by explosion or lightning strike or whatever you think will happen to you if you go outiside #it's a big step but i will do it #quick everyone bully me into it if you see me start questioning it #I've been to his place once and they have two cats there so i might just the hang out with the cats #last time i went to a party was b-day parties in middle school lol #we'll see how this will go...

It was New Years, and Rapunzel had invited all her college friends to a house party. She was excited to see them again, and she had made sure there was everything. Sweets, cakes, salads, mash potatoes, everything.

Cassandra was off at the side, talking with her own friends. She looked up as she heard a familiar voice.

“Hey Cassandra!” It was Varian, and he had ran over to her. “How are you! Man, I haven’t seen you in forever!” Varian said. He looked different. He was taller, and last she saw him he was short. He also had his hair in a pony tail, which she thought was interesting. He still had that weird dark teal strip of hair though.

“Well Varian, I’ve been doing great. You?” She asked as she took a sip of her drink.

“I’ve been great! I’m also top of the chemistry course at my university. Impressive, isn’t it?” He said, chuckling.

“Impressive yes, but it’s also expected.” She smirked.

“Same can be for you! Your literally a junior detective, and you work with actual detectives! And your only 5th year!” He exclaimed, taking a glass of eggnog from a nearby table.

“Hm? How do you know that?” Cassandra asked, raising a brow and crossing her arms.

“Oh come on! It was on the news! Everybody knows!”

“Wait- you mean if I were to come up to a random person here and ask what I’m doing, they would answer correctly?” She asked, smirking as she put her hand on her hip.

“Mhm. I bet you $10.” Varian replied as he followed her over to someone.

Cassandra stopped I front of someone she partially knew from her time at high school, Max. “Hey Max!” She started. “Me and Varian are doing a bet. What do I currently do?”

Max looked up and saw her. “Oh. Hey Cassandra. And uh- don’t you work with a detective?” He said, shrugging.

Cassandra looked over at Varain who had a ‘I told you so’ face. She groaned and looked at Max again. “Okay, but what year am in at university?” She asked again.

“Oh! Your fifth year. I know that for sure!” He said as he pushed up his glasses. “Is that all?” He asked Cassandra who nodded.

“Told you.” Varian said and Cassandra sighed.

“You win.” She said as she gave him the money.

“Well, I’ll be off to talk to Eugene. Team Awesome reunites!” He chuckled and went over to Eugene who instantly started talking with him.

She smiled. Varian sure did change, but he was still the same. She liked that about him. She found herself staring at Varian for longer than she expected because in a few minutes Rapunzel came over to her to talk.

“Who have you been staring at for the past 7 minutes?” Rapunzel asked her high school best friend, who looked at her in surprise.

“Raps! When did you get here?”

“Um.. I’m the party host?” She laughed. “Have you been staring at someone? Ooh! Is it a crush!” She squealed as Cassandra’s face turned red.

“No!” She said back but Rapunzel kept snickering.

It was now the ball drop. Everyone had gathered outside and there was so much noise. Everyone was talking, kids were running around, people were recording and taking pictures. It was nice.

She stared at the countdown.

8 minutes.

She looked over at everyone, and saw Varian and Eugene running around like children. She laughed, and looked at Rapunzel who was talking with some others.

7 minutes.

She drank her eggnog and decided to get a fire cracker. She payed for it and sat down on a bench that had a great view.

6 minutes.

She took another sip and saw Varian laughing at Eugene. She smiled at their antics. Rapunzel also seems to have joined them.

5 minutes.

She saw a little girl nagging her mom to buy something from a small stand. There were plushies and toys there, so it was obvious what the girl wanted. She smiled.

4 minutes.

“Hey Cassandra!” She looked up to see Varian. He sat down next to her and sighed. “Me and Eugene were playing tag and man- it was tiring.” He laughed as she smiled.

3 minutes.

“Hm. So that was what you were doing.” She smiled as she took a sip of her eggnog. They continued talking and Cassandra kept finding herself staring at the taller boy.

2 minutes.

She looked at Varian and noticed herself scooting closer to him. He also noticed but he was probably confused at Cassandra’s sudden move.

1 minute.

As Varian saw Cassandra looking at him, he looked back and continued rambling with a flustered face. Cassandra chuckled.

“HAPPY NEW YEARS!”

Varian slowly put his hand on Cassandra’s, and was very nervous. “Happy New Years Cass.” He said and she smiled. She scooted closer to him, placing her head on his shoulder. “You too.” She said.

They watched as the fireworks were set off, and the whole city seems to be cheering that it was now January 1st,
