Something I love about Dandadan:
yes the action is fantastic. The story is fantastic, the visuals are insane. The fact that Yuki Tatsu can make such incredible two page spreads is insanely impressive. But I think what I love the most are how realistic "to their age", the characters act. Nothing emphasized this more than when Jiji was introduced. Similar to how Hobie Brown was set up and introduced in the recent Spiderverse movie, we are expected to take the MCs side in disliking the "male rival" of the girl they're into (Momo, or in spiderverse, Gwen). But, Jiji is almost immediately just as goofy and silly as any teenage boy would be. Yeah he's athletic and attractive, but that realistic bent of just acting like any other exuberant teenage boy makes the group dynamic way more interesting than if Jiji had been depicted as more serious. If you haven't guessed already, the slice of life scenes in the manga are my favorites. Like, yeah I can't pick my favorite child, but i'm a sucker for good slice of life, good romance. And Dandadans ability to mix classic shonen (transformations, insanely cool OTT battles) with extremely well written group dynamic and ROMANCE is just the cherry on top for this manga. I cannot wait for the inevitable anime announcement.

It's been over six months and plenty of new series have hit Jump+ so it's time for another installment of Currently Running Manga Recommendation
First up on the list is Red Cat Ramen. A slice of life story about a Ramen Shop run by Cats! It's very cute and wholesome. It has a good balance of Humor and Seriousness in regards to it's premise. Current has 69 chapters (nice) but its such an easy read that it feels like less.
Next up is Magical Girl Tsubame: I Will (Not) Save The World! Another twist on the Magical Girl Format, it's not gritty/edgy/dark like so many others while simultaneously taking a different path from its contemporary Magilumiere Co (shameless plug). In its world the sky is full of different colored Hearts called Notions that occasionally crack open and make people violent. It's up to new magical girl Tsubame and friends to figure out what caused these deadly Notions to appear and how to get rid of them. Mapollo-sensei's wonky artstyle amplifies the cute by unsettling story and at only 12 chapters it still has room to grow!
Hope You're Happy, Lemon: College boy has never gotten over his childhood friend turned middleschool girlfriend who cheated on and dumped him. He finally meets a girl with potential to finally get him through that funk until, uh-oh, that girl is roommates with his childhood friend?? AND it turns out the friend didn't cheat on him, it was a stupid lie that she feels bad about and still has feelings for him all these years later!!! AND THEN Mr.Boy and Ms.Childhood Friend start switching bodies every night, hijinks and comedy ensue. An interesting premise for romance manga. Currently at Eight chapters.
Last series this go-round is MamaYuyu. In this world there are two opposing forces, the Human Hero and the Demon Lord. That is until 18 years ago peace was made between Human and Demon. We follow the current hero Corleo, having grown up in peace times he doesn't really know what it means to be a Hero. When Heroes and Demon Lords from other worlds begin to appear in his, he has to learn fast. A lot of potential here, if it keeps building on itself I can see it being a new long running battle shonen so get in at the ground floor. Currently at 15 chapters

Masaoki Shindō's RuriDragon manga will resume with a change to its serialization. Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine will publish five chapters of the manga from this year's 14th issue on March 4, 2024 until the 18th issue on April 1, 2024. The manga will then move its serialization to Weekly Shonen Jump's digital version and on Shueisha's Shonen Jump+ manga website, starting on April 22, 202. It will then release new chapters every other issue.
The manga took two one-week breaks early in July 2022, due to the author's "sudden illness," before announcing an extended break at the end of that month.

Apparently the new Shonen Jump+ series called History's Mentalist by Tomato Tri and Natsuko Uruma wanted to get real real and be depressingly relatable for many during these past few years!

Tatsuki Fujimoto's concerning advice on drawing women
So, a while back, Shonen Jump+ posted an interview with the creator of Chainsaw Man where he talks about a current manga created by a guy who used to assist him during Fire Punch. Upon being asked for his favorite character, he responded like this:
Tumblr media
Ummm. Did I just. read that correctly? "I learned from a fellow writer that you can create all kinds of different-looking men, but for the female characters, just make all of them hot. This one time, I tried drawing... a girl o-o-outside of my personal tastes, and my homie pushed back against the idea. I did it anyways, but eventually I transitioned her back into my old habits, lol!"
Tumblr media
Fujimoto just. He just admitted to curbing the amount of diversity in his character designs depending on their gender, didn't he? I was truly railed by the level of old man energy coursing through this paragraph. (Also, I'm not too out-of-pocket for interpreting "aLL cUtE" as 'sexually attractive,' am I? The text uses these ambiguous quote marks that imply the speaker or the translator didn't exactly know to word the concept.) This isn't the kind of behavior I expected to see firsthand. This is something I expected to see someone else complaining about on Twitter, and also probably not concerning the most celebrated writer in his field at the moment. As someone who fell in love with his one shots, I'm baffled at how his work turns out as well as it does under this mindset. It's like talking to a musician who reinvented multiple genres and hearing him say, "oh, I just make sure the chords go I-V-vi-IV at some point. Works every time!"

This week’s Magilumiere chapter includes a colour page to celebrate the series’ first year serialisation anniversary! It also features our first glimpse at the cover of the 5th collected volume, which will hit Japanese shelves on November 4th 2022.
The RIMT arc ends with this chapter so it will be exciting to see where our favourite magical girl start-up goes next!

Welcome to another addition of my currently running Manga recommendations
MARRIAGETOXIN: awkward assassin Gero needs to find someone to marry and fast or else his family will force his older sister to break up with her girlfriend, and marry a man to become head of the family. With the help of marriage swindler Kinosaki, Gero pivots from killing to protecting in order to meet women.  Great comedy, art and characters. It can be goofy jokey one moment and jump to a deadly serious battle the next.
OSHI NO KO: A fantastic read, an amazing recent anime adaptation. A nuisance take on celebrity/idol culture in japan. I cannot possibly do it justice describing it anymore, just read it
The Ichinose Family’s Deadly Sins: The entire family has amnesia after a car crash. The family sets out to learn about themselves and uncover mysteries along the way. The art can be a barrier for some but it really elevates the frantic and uncertain feel of the story.  If you liked Taizan 5′s other work Takopi’s Original Sin, you’re gonna dig this too.
Me and my Gangster Neighbor: 10 year old Yuuhi lives alone most of the time since his Uncle is frequently away on business trips. One day his upstairs neighbor Mr. Aoi falls through the ceiling. An unlikely friendship forms and slice-of-life antics ensue. This manga is wholesome on wholesome.
There are plenty of other gr8 series running but these are some of my favs : )

Thinking about how popular Mai would've been if she were a boy. Like, can you imagine?people would've swooned over her like they swoon over, idk, Jet—it just occured to me that I like her because she's so unconventional for a female character.
Girls like Mai exist in real world—but women are rarely allowed to be complex and three dimensional and grey in fiction.
I would argue that Mai is a grey character; she did start out as Azula's lackey. And well, that's a fictional girl; I found her apathy stan-worthy.
I love that she constantly has a bitch face. She cracks dry/dark jokes. Wears black. Is mysterious and stoic. Does everything she can to disregard authority/even though she's not confrontational about it. (There's one difference. Bad boys are usually very confrontational).
All these characteristics exist in popular male characters. (Except for one thing that I've noticed: most of these “bad boy” characters are volatile and yet, are described as broody/stoic, like, dude. That ain't stoic, that's so emotional.)
So yeah. Coming back to Mai. Imagine if she were a boy.
A boy who's apathetic and has no passion for anything. A boy who's constantly bored/a thrill-seeker/has nothing he cares about. A boy who has a shutter for a face and rarely expresses himself, is amazing with knives and hand-to-hand combat and is gloomy.
There's nothing he cares about because caring gets people hurt and everyone wants something and is two-faced so it's safe to be a mask of indifference. Until—hold on—until he meets a passionate, hot-headed girl who's ✨ different ✨and if not anything, wears her heart on her sleeve/is an open book...
Yes, I'm talking about Zuko.
...and oh, oh, would you look at that? Now he has something to fight for!
I mean, for Mai, Zuko (after Ty Lee) is the only other person in front of whom she can be herself.
Reminds me of “he's only nice to her” trope. Sorry.
“You're so beautiful when you hate the world.”
“I don't hate you.”
Just imagine Mai as a boy. People would eat it up. They don't like her 'cause she's a girl.
