Honest Opinion - Poseidon
General Overall score: 6/10
Tumblr media
Part 1 - Julian Solo
For reasons I cannot understand, in Italy he is called Julian Kedives. Seriously, what the...
Overall score (character, not looks): 4/10
Just because you have a cute face, it doesn’t mean you can ask people to marry you out of the blue. I don’t think there has ever been a scene without Seiya in it that made me cringe so bad.  I honestly could give him an even lower score, because his behavior has really been ridiculous and nonsensical, but he’s not that inherently bad so I can’t.
He’s just... too full of himself. Way too much, indeed.
Though, things changed a bit when he fell under Poseidon’s control. And by changed a bit I mean he was still full of himself, but in a much more divine way.
Tumblr media
Part 2 - Poseidon
Again, for whatever reason, in Italy he changed name. Still a mythological one, but... wrong mythology. From Poseidon to Neptune (aka Nettuno). Come on.
Overall score (character, not looks): 7/10
You know, the reason why I don’t like Poseidon that much is not that he’s a bad character.  Is that, when he’s not fully awakened yet, there’s Julian still creeping around and still asking to marry Athena. And, to be honest, that’s a no for me. I might not like Athena, but he really does need to take a no as an answer.
I also definitely don’t like how evil Poseidon is in the show, but what can we do, Athena is clearly the good one in every single way.  Bah, whatever. Back to the opinion.
I have to say, locking Athena up in the main Pillar to win two things in one was damn smart. Hadn’t t been for the plot, because of course Athena has to win and save everyone, he would have successfully tricked her into surrender and won.  He used Athena’s weakness, her love for all humanity, against her and succeeded.  No one can convince me otherwise, he would have won the war hadn’t his defeat been vital for the plot.
Though... him being controlled by Kanon? Tricked by him? That’s not something that should happen to a god, an omnipotent being, but I am still convinced him being deceived didn’t happen because of his ineptitude. Rather, Kanon had been smarter and outwitted him.
What I really hold against him is: how he didn’t instantly kill the Bronze Saints who tried to end his life, but instead just stood there as any true anime villain would do; how he decided to fight back - seriously fight back - only when fully awakened.  I get it, Kanon’s influence was restraining him and whatnot, but to the point of avoiding the Bronze Saints’ death? Nope, that’s totally on him, and I kept yelling at the screen for all those episodes.
Also, while flooding the entire world means his domain would be even greater, killing everyone who lives in it? A bad and a stupid choice, all together. Poseidon claimed he wanted to purify the world and help it grown anew, because “he’s not evil like Hades” (which is, as I will remark in the future, stupid).  He was represented as a villain, there’s no use in him saying he’s doing whatever he’s doing for the sake of humanity. A god concerned with humanity my ass, that’s not what I saw.
That said - and Kanon aside - I loved how he manipulated Asgard, through Polaris Hilda. This is something I truly appreciated, because it showed how smart he can be, and took advantage of the entire situation, turning the tables.  A move worthy of a god, even if orchestrated by someone on the outside.
I didn’t like how this character was handled, both compared to his mythological counterpart and because of the confusing labeling he has.  I would have loved to give him a better score, but this kind of stuff ticks me off.
Part 3 - Comparison with the mythological Poseidon
Remember the word I’ve used for Athena? Yeah, same one. BAD.
Poseidon is not completely good, but is not bad either. He had nothing to do with the personality Saint Seiya represented him with in the show.  Like every other god, he can be benign and kind and aid sailors in their travels, but also cause earthquakes and floods following him feeling insulted somehow.  Plus, he has his share of deeds, both good and (very) bad.
But he’s different, is not so resentful towards humanity, and definitely doesn’t purify the world by killing everyone living on it and still pass as a benevolent god.
