Song Review: Albania
Time for Albania - represented by Albina. Could you think of a more fitting name?
Albina & Familja Kelmendi - Duje
Personal opinion: My immediate impression of this song was: this is totally Eurovision material. And it, indeed, has so many ESC-worthy ingredients - a strong, powerful start, great vocals, an ethnic instrumental section, and a catchy, memorable chorus. Definitely hits the “Love Love Peace Peace” checklist! (Well, not sure about the lyrics, as I don’t understand Albanian and haven’t checked the translation yet.) I definitely enjoyed it. It was one of the most outstanding packages in the national final, conveying a nice amount of energy and party vibes. That being said, I do feel there is something missing from the song - perhaps it still needs some oomph to turn a great song into an excellent one. Seeing that Albanian contestants tend to revamp their entries, I have hope this will be improved even further.
Also, the song kind of reminds me of Nova Deca (Serbia 2018). But as a less dark, more celebratory version.
Prediction: At this point, I can see it faring better than Sekret - that is, getting into the final. I can imagine the song being liked especially by televoters, and that’s a good sign considering the semifinals are televote-only. With some revamping, it could also have a good jury appeal. The overall result should be around 15-18, if I’m being realistic. I don’t see as much success potential in it than in the Ukrainian entry.
Thoughts on national selection: I’m a firm believer on quality over quantity, and in large selections like this, you often end up getting lots of filler songs and maybe a handful of great entries. Yes, I get that it’s the FiK format and that the contest serves a bigger purpose than simply a Eurovision selection, but still! (And don’t even mention Sanremo, there’s a reason I never watch it.) While the overall quality didn’t impress me, there were a few gems (although none of them in the level of queen Jonida Maliqi); beside the Eurovision representative, my favourites were the overall winner - Elsa Lila’s haunting ballad - and Manjola Nallbani’s nostalgic banger. I also enjoyed Arsi Bako’s beautiful ballad that unfortunately got eliminated in the semifinal.
As for the format changes, I like that the songs were only heard for the first time in the actual show - you get to know the whole package immediately without building expectations based on studio versions. I also liked that the public got to choose the ESC entrant - after all, a country’s entry should represent the taste of the citizens, not of a handful of music professionals. Sure, if I’m being realistic, Elsa Lila might have had better chances at succeeding, but the people clearly wanted Albina and got what they wanted.

Tumblr media
Friday 18:04, Slovenian St. nº8-A
ALEKSEEV: It must be here.
Alekseev and Zena stand in front of what it’s supposed to be Lea Sirk’s house. None of them move, they’re just contemplating.
ZENA: And what are you waiting for?
ALEKSEEV: We need to come up with something to say...
Zena doesn’t listen, and immediately rings the bell. Alekseev freaks out.
ALEKSEEV: What are you doing?! What are we going to say?!
The door opens, and a small brunette woman comes out.
JONIDA: How can I help you?
ZENA: Hi, we’re looking for Lea... Sirk.
JONIDA: (confused) Uhmmm, yeah. She lives here. Why do you want to see her?
ZENA: We’re her classmates. We have to do a project together and she said she would start it, then we would finish it.
JONIDA: Aren’t you a little bit young for being in Lea’s class?
Alekseev starts becoming nervous. Zena shrughs.
ZENA: I’m just short. That’s all.
JONIDA: Okay, wait here. I’ll call her right now.
As Jonida goes away inside the house again, Alekseev punches Zena in the arm.
ZENA: Ouch! What for?
ALEKSEEV: Don’t ever do that again. We almost get caught!
ZENA: It’s fine, Aleks. I promise.
Zena rolls her eyes, and suddenly Lea appears in the front door.
LEA: Ummm... hello?
ALEKSEEV: Where is Mélovin?
Lea frowns.
LEA: What?
Zena sighs.
ZENA: We’re Alekseev and Zena, we’re Mélovin’s cousins and he’s not at home. We are looking for him before he gets in trouble. (showing her his phone) His last message was to you, he said he was coming.
Lea takes the phone and reads the messages.
LEA: Yeah, he told me if he could come but I haven’t seen him yet. Do you think he’s okay?
Alekseev and Zena exchange looks.
ALEKSEEV: He knows how to take care of himself, but I don’t know what could happen.
Lea sighs.
LEA: I’m sorry guys, I can’t help you. Let me know if he is okay when you find him.
ALEKSEEV: We’ll do.
Lea closes the door in their faces and Alekseev sighs.
ALEKSEEV: Great! Now what?
ZENA: (shrughs) Something tells me she was lyring, but we can’t prove that.
ALEKSEEV: Now what do we do?
ZENA: Pray.

Eurovision Song Contest 2019: Tel Aviv  except it’s a video game edit inspired by Smash and it features a loading screen, a “choose your contestant” for each semi final, the chosen characters and a screen with the final results!
- Part one - Part two -
(Inspired also by those ESC battle fan videos on youtube)
(I need to thank @breaddo for helping me and my friends that I randomly asked which contestants they would choose without telling them why)
