happy ww kai!! i'm a post-in my time of dying truther (though always happy to entertain other headcanons about this). this got long, so:

@twochildreninamoteldemo talked about the full house of wincest earlier, and i'm gonna quote him here:

(they're referencing in the beginning btw) so anyway with this in mind i do think it was kind of inevitable! they already exist in this isolated space: as hunters (from civilians), but also from the hunting community (again i cite jo's diary and how she calls john 'uncle john' but sam and dean don't even know that she exists; many people know john who don't know his sons) – indeed, flowers in the impala.

i don't think they acted on any feelings while john was around because i think dean was way too tied (sexually, yes, but also dean was so in love with him no matter how messy that was) to john. and after the pilot – nothing drastic enough has happened to spur sam & dean to finally act yet, even though there's probably been something there for a while. sam, probably realized in high school and this definitely only led to him feeling more and more like an outcast; dean probably realized he had feelings sometime circa season 1.

john's death is such a good catalyst. they're both so emotionally messed up. dean's angry; he lost this beacon of light and his father and his first love and like, he just put so much of his own existence on john, and now he's gone. and sam...sam had such a complicated relationship with john too. and they're never going to have a chance to further that. and in that moment, they want so badly to be close to each other and it just...it just happens.

after that, i think the sex is fairly regular.

as for romance, i don't think either of them would categorize their relationship as such even though they're very much in love with each other (playthings and a very supernatural christmas come to mind). mostly because sam would never think dean feels that way about him and dean would never think he deserves sam like that. i've talked before about them being in an open, undiscussed situationship for a long while. while the romance is always there, i doubt either of them would take a moment to categorize it as such until the later seasons when they're playing bunker domesticity (or so i hear – i'm only on s8). but they definitely both view it that way: look at how ruby, lisa, amelia, and benny are all framed as one brother cheating on the other.

the really funny thing to me abt getting back into this fandom is that it’s actually been helpful in terms of my trauma as an incest survivor. like, someone made a post about how even if no sex ever happened between sam and dean their relationship was still incestuous. and unless i repressed something that’s true of my own trauma, but i’ve been kind of treating it like it was Lesser or not really incest because of that.

And because we know he keeps to himself a lot in college, afraid to really let people get to know him, I can sooo see him alone in his dorm with the portable CD player he saved up to buy with work-study money just listening to Hole and Nirvana and RHCP and Smashing Pumpkins and Soundgarden and stuff lol

- I know a lot of people HC that Sam experiments with guys during his time at college but I don’t know that he does…even in California, 2001-2005 was a pretty rough time to be out, and I honestly mostly picture him jerking off to gay porn more than I do him having a quasi-steady sex life with guys. I tend to also see Sam as having a preference toward women. However I DO think he got in at least one gay sex experience at a bar one night after amicably beating the guy in darts, and when he got home he spent all night wondering if Dean’s also had experiences with guys (he has) and he never stops to think about the fact that he is like, really intensely thinking about his brother’s sex life lol

- Jess is the only one of his friends (and later girlfriend, obv) he tells about Dean. He lets the rest of his friends think he’s an only child, military brat, bad relationship with his father. Brady of course knows he’s got a brother and sometimes tries to wheedle this out of Sam, who’s pretty tight-lipped about his family. Some of his acquaintances think he’s a cult escapee. Jess asks why Sam doesn’t talk to Dean anymore and he says “I just can’t” and never elaborates

Dean:

- We know Dean and John go to check on Sam at Stanford sometimes, but one night after John goes back to the motel Dean continues to tail Sam. Even gets kind of angry that Sam hasn’t picked up on Dean following him – his reflexes have gotten bad. Really seriously considers revealing himself, and even follows Sam all the way to a bar or party. Then he sees Sam meet up with Jess, give her a kiss, have a real smile on his face, and he turns and walks away. He’s really angry, like, way more angry than he has a right to be, doesn’t think about why, goes to a dive bar and picks up a guy, specifically, to fuck

- Whereas sexual stuff with John used to be more of a rarity, it becomes really regular once Sam is gone. I don’t read this as an equal relationship; I think Dean thinks he has some sort of power and has consented to it, but really he’s not in a position to say no. Whether John meant to or not, he groomed Dean, and once Sam is gone there’s no reason to hide

- Similar to the Jess & Sam situation, Cassie is the only person Dean tells about Sam. Not that he makes a habit of bringing up his family to people he sleeps with at all – not that he makes a habit of having relationships in general – but stuff comes up in pillow talk sometimes. “Just me and my dad,” he’ll always say. He doesn’t want to share Sam with these people, they don’t mean anything anyway. But Cassie means something, so it doesn’t feel so bad to share Sam with her. It doesn’t work out, and he stops saying anything about his family to anyone. Always just claims to be on his own; lost his family young

tyvm, you too anon! i've talked about this at length before so apologies for being redundant, but i really do see the way he treats his sons as very gendered. dean slots into the wife role; in 2x02 we very much see him as a widow. furthermore, john sees dean as an adult very early – dean is legit one of the most parentified child characters i've ever seen – whereas he sees sam as an eternal child. dean grew up too fast; sam wasn't allowed to grow up at all, and it kept him as constantly othered. also, john knew something was "wrong" with sam and kept him at arm's length. we know he loved sam and tried to protect him, but it did further his "otherness" in the family. it also made him into the typical teenager who rebels against what his family wants him to do whereas dean is quite literally "daddy's little girl."

all this to say, as they grow older, and john dies, dean doesn't take his place as "eldest son" and become the patriarch of the family. sam actually ends up slotting into that role, and dean falls back into his place as wife.

i talked about this at one point wrt dean/jo in a jo-is-their-half-sister-scenario, but i think that john's isolation of the boys and enabling their codependency (again i use the phrase 'flowers in the impala' lol) did result in them being compulsively attracted to family members. or at least people that can be posited as family in their minds. sam's lovers notoriously being girl!deans comes to mind...

Normally John isn’t a character I think of genderbending because so much of what appeals to me about him IS that masculinity that stems directly from being raised with the social expectations of a (cisgender) man at the time of the draft, etc., and how that has translated onto his kids. He’s so FATHER, not just literally but thematically tied to God and numerous other fathers in the show.

But at the same time. I mean. Horny? Yeah, that’s hot dksjsjsk and tbh it IS fascinating to think of how Dean would be were he raised by his mother instead and how sexuality ties in there. Takes on a whole other direction

And I’d be remiss to say I don’t view father as a gender neutral term the same way I do mother, bc I do. And of course the idea of butch John and her masculinity is a whole other interesting thing, it’s just takes a different path so I hadn’t thought about it before — both of those things do within the context of a show about American masculinity where the pre-canon is largely in the 80s and 90s. i've actually written some hunt gone wrong and so you are coming to someone who has done many a thunk after this concept and i think a lot of it depends on how bad the bad is and what's the fuckup.

mild injury fuckup? that's some primo time for john to be deans savior and to remind dean how much he's got to learn still, but they're spending the evening relaxing together and working out the hunt endorphins

dean fucked up and got himself really hurt? i think john's a lot more worried about him than he would be frustrated or angry because that's his firstborn baby and his life and wellbeing comes before john being right/chastizing him about his mistakes

dean fucked up bad but neither is hurt (creature got away/other people died)? i think john's coping by spending some time away from dean, going for drives, leaving him at the motel to run to the bar for the evening without a word, possibly even being like "i think you need to hunt something on your own, you're relying on me to save your ass too much" and sending dean off on some lead of his own
