I actually just reread that in August! A storm took our power out for two days (the storm wasn’t that bad, but a tree fell directly on our line) and I ended up reading most of it by candlelight. 100% agree, this belongs on all autumnal-spooky reading lists.

I’m sorry anon! I opened this on mobile and it was Supposed to save a draft because I couldn’t see all your ask and wanted to answer when I came online, but no, tumblr published it (d-mn its eyes, etc)

It’s So much creepier than his usual balls, but, he thinks, you know what, the ladies are pretty in a peculiar kind of way (even if one seems to be wearing a dress made of…bats?), and as little sleep as he’s getting it does give him a dreamy, fashionably ill aspect, so really, what’s the real loss?

Although of course when he gets shot a second time for following the Lady of the Plucked Eye and Heart home, shouting poetry at her, he finds that he maybe should have been a bit more careful.

(He doesn’t die of his wounds, and nor does he become the new champion; instead he seems to fall out of the strange, blue-cast world and one bullet wound cancels out the other, leaving him standing in holey stockings in a very wet and brambly field in the North of England)
