Alice Coltrane & Santana - Previously Unissued 1974 Recordings
Further Illuminations! The Heat Warps and Mr. Completely delivered the goods last week with a sizable selection of heretofore uncirculated Alice + Carlos (and John McLaughlin) recordings. Truly great stuff — some very interesting outtakes, improvs and alternates from the Illuminations sessions and a fairly astounding live tape from 1974. Lots of celestial harp and burnt Wurlitzer, along with Santana and McLaughlin's fusion-y flights of fancy. Let us go into the house of the Lord!!!
The details: A pair of documents has recently emerged to expand our understanding of this collaboration. The first, a 3-hour + 45-minute collection of newly discovered audio from the Illuminations sessions, including previously unknown compositions, stripped back tracking sessions, overdub reels, working tapes and a cache of alternate takes and mixes. It offers a wide-screen vision of the avenues this album could have taken: a more earth-bound collection rooted in free jazz and heavy fusion, or a pared-down, reflective journey aimed to guide listeners on an inner search. All that could have been is laid out here. The second document, equally illuminating, is a previously un-circulated soundboard recording of a March 14, 1974 concert from the Kabuki Theater in San Francisco. The tape features spare devotional sets from John McLaughlin and Carlos Santana, sets from Alice Coltrane in both solo and trio settings, as well as ensemble performances of Illuminations material and more.

Steely Dan Keyboardist Jim Beard Dies at 63
- “The world has lost a real heavyweight,” Larry Goldings says
Keyboardist Jim Beard, a longtime member of Steely Dan’s touring band, has died at 63.
The news was first reported by Billboard magazine, which cited a Steely Dan rep who said Beard died March 2 “due to complications from a sudden illness.”
“He wrote, recorded, arranged and produced some absolutely stunning music, in its sophistication and beauty,” Larry Goldings said in eulogizing his fellow keyboardist.
“The world has lost a real heavyweight.”
Before joining Steely Dan in 2008, Beard toured and recorded with Pat Metheny, John McLaughlin, Wayne Shorter, Steve Vai, David Sanborn and others, while finding the time to work as a producer and record six solo LPs.
Beard was a “friend and mentor” to former Tedeschi Trucks Band bassist Tim Lefebvre, who had one word to describe the late musician: “Genius.”
“Jim was one of my all-time musical heroes,” said James Raymond, who frequently collaborated with his father, David Crosby.
“A wonderful pianist, synthesist, composer, arranger and producer. … Condolences and thoughts for his family”

JOHN McLAUGHLIN PART 1 — BEGINNINGS
Sitting down with a music book and a pile of albums to accompany the content is analogue heaven. And when the musician has a career as rich and varied as British guitarist John McLaughlin, you can be confident the soundtrack will be both demanding and deeply rewarding. As for the book, that needs to be thoroughly researched and well-written, doesn’t it? Vinyl Connection can report that Matt…

Shakti, the Indian-fusion band that John McLaughlin convened 50 (!) years ago in his post-Mahavishnu Orchestra days, is back, and that virtuosic goodness is still featured by the players, including tabla superstar Zakir Hussain.
McLaughlin is now 82, playing up a storm after curing himself of career-ending arthritis(!), and, of that whole cohort of shredders that came out of fusion, he's always been, for me, the one who has played with the most taste and musicality. I mean, yeah, he can bury you with 64th notes in alternating 9/8 and 5/16 time, but he also knows how to lay back, turn down, and let quarter notes tell the story. I hope he receives his due acknowledgments while he's still with us.
