The Angels’ Managerial Search

We’re tracking all of the managerial hiring situations around the league with team-specific posts, and it’s time to introduce one for the Angels. Mike Scioscia just wrapped up a 19-year tenure with the organization that included a whopping ten-year, $50MM contract — a managerial pact that’s still without compare.

As of late last week, the Halos were wrapping up their first round of chats with potential candidates, as Jeff Fletcher of the Southern California News Group reported. At least ten candidates were slated for an early look, with the remainder of the process — and the identities of most names under consideration — largely unknown.

There still aren’t a ton of names available, but we learned more about the club’s approach from MLB.com’s Jon Morosi (Twitter link). Beyond reviewing resumes and speaking with candidates, the Angels front office is said to be “administering [a] 2-hour written test to managerial candidates” that poses “questions spanning analytical, interpersonal and game-management aspects of the job.” Needless to say, that’s an interesting process.

Latest Update – 10/20

The Angels have interviewed Rays major league field coordinator Rocco Baldelli, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports and Fletcher confirms. Baldelli’s among 10 candidates who interviewed during the first round of the process, per Fletcher, though he reports there are only six confirmed names (Baldelli, Vizquel, Chavez, Ausmus, Espada and Hyde). While it’s unknown which candidates have stood out to the Angels thus far, Fletcher writes that they could name their next manager by Monday.

Earlier Update — 10/18

Longtime big league infielder Omar Vizquel interviewed for the position but is no longer in consideration to be hired, per Venezuelan journalist Efrain Zavece on his podcast (Twitter link; hat tip to MLB.com’s Maria Guardado). The 51-year-old Vizquel previously served as the Tigers’ first base coach (under fellow Halos managerial candidate Brad Ausmus) and has spent the past two seasons managing in the White Sox’ minor league ranks.

Have Interviewed/Will Interview

Eric Chavez, who finished the season as the Angels’ Triple-A manager, has interviewed for the position, per Morosi. The same is true of former Tigers skipper Brad Ausmus, who is currently a special assistant to Angels GM Billy Eppler. Chavez, in particular, was reported as a favorite for the job early in the process — in some cases, before Scioscia even formally stepped down.

Astros bench coach Joe Espada is among the initial candidates, as ESPN.com’s Marly Rivera reports. He’ll get an interview, if he hasn’t already, per Fletcher, who notes that the timing was not yet clear given the Houston ballclub’s ongoing postseason commitments. Espada, who is in his first year in his role, is also drawing interest from multiple other teams.

Cubs bench coach Brandon Hyde received an interview from the Halos, according to MLB.com’s Jon Morosi (via Twitter). He has ample experience in the Chicago dugout, including a pair of campaigns as bench coach and three prior years as first base coach. Hyde also spent five years as a minor-league manager within the Marlins organization. Like Espada, he’s chatting with other clubs as well.

Potential Candidates

It isn’t yet certain who else the Halos have sat down with, but it seems there are some strong hunches. Fletcher tabs four internal possibilities: special assistants Brad Ausmus and Eric Chavez along with field personnel Dino Ebel (third-base coach) and Josh Paul (bench coach). Those looking for more reading on the topic may also want to check out this recent post from MLB.com’s Maria Guardado. She recently ran through some possible names to contemplate, included many of those covered above. MLB notebook: Jansen (irregular heartbeat) cleared, activated

Los Angeles Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen was cleared to resume pitching Monday and reinstated by the team after missing nearly two weeks due to an irregular heartbeat.

After meeting with a cardiologist on Monday, Jansen told reporters that he was off blood thinners, according to ESPN. The right-hander added, “I’m ready to go. … I don’t need to be babied.”

Jansen was activated from the disabled list ahead of the team’s Monday night home game against the St. Louis Cardinals. In a corresponding move, the team placed left-hander Zac Rosscup on the 10-day disabled list because of a strained left calf.

Jansen, 30, said last week that he might need a second heart surgery in the offseason to address atrial fibrillation. He underwent a catheter ablation in 2012 to deal with the issue.

—Chicago White Sox manager Rick Renteria was taken to a local hospital before the team’s road game against the Minnesota Twins after complaining of lightheadedness.

Renteria, in his second season as White Sox manager, was at Target Field when he began feeling lightheaded. Soon after, he was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center.

The White Sox later announced that tests revealed no serious issues for Renteria, and the team said he may return to the stadium during the evening’s game if he felt well enough. Team announcers Jason Benetti and Steve Stone said during the game’s telecast that Renteria texted an update from the hospital, explaining that he was feeling fine. Bench coach Joe McEwing handled Chicago’s managerial duties.

—The Baltimore Orioles placed designated hitter Mark Trumbo on the 10-day disabled list with right knee inflammation.

The Orioles also reinstated Adam Jones from the bereavement list and recalled outfielder John Andreoli from Triple-A Norfolk.

Trumbo has been bothered by his right knee for much of the season. He told reporters after Sunday’s loss to the Cleveland Indians that he has good days and bad days, but added, “Most days are pretty rough, though.”

—Howard “Doc” Edwards, who played catcher for four major league teams and then managed the Cleveland Indians for three seasons, died in San Angelo, Texas, at age 81. No details of a cause of death were included when his family announced his death.

Edwards replaced Pat Corrales as the Indians’ manager during the 1987 season, and the club went 30-45 under his watch, finishing seventh (last) in the American League East.

He posted a 78-84 record in 1988 as Cleveland came in sixth in the division. The Indians were 65-78 and in sixth again when he was fired late in the 1989 season, replaced on an interim basis by John Hart.

—The Seattle Mariners reinstated infielder Jean Segura from the paternity list and recalled outfielder Ben Gamel from Triple-A Tacoma.

Segura was placed on the paternity list on Friday.

Seattle optioned outfielder Guillermo Heredia (.217/.295/.308, four homers, 14 RBIs) to Tacoma and right-handed reliever Matt Festa (0-0, 3.28 ERA) to Double-A Arkansas.

—The San Francisco Giants recalled right-hander Derek Law from Triple-A Sacramento and optioned right-hander Ray Black to the minor league affiliate.

Law has an 8.74 ERA with a 0-0 record in six relief appearances this season for the Giants.

Black was 2-2 with a 5.74 ERA in 16 relief appearances for San Francisco.

—The Pirates recalled left-hander Steven Brault from Triple-A Indianapolis, and he threw two scoreless innings Monday in Pittsburgh’s 1-0 loss to the Atlanta Braves.

The Pirates optioned lefty reliever Buddy Boshers (1-0, 4.89 ERA in 38 games) to Indianapolis to make room on the roster.

Mike Fiers pitched well for the third consecutive game, and the Oakland Athletics supported their new pitcher with a four-homer, four-double assault on Texas Rangers pitching in an 9-0 romp Monday night in the opener on a three-game series in Oakland, Calif.

Ramon Laureano hit his first two career home runs, and Khris Davis belted his 38th, propelling the A’s to the 15th win in their past 19 games. Davis tied Boston’s J.D. Martinez for the major league home run lead.

The Athletics’ win coupled with the Astros’ road loss to the Seattle Mariners allowed Oakland to move back into a tie with Houston for first place in the American League West.

Fiers (9-6), acquired from the Detroit Tigers in a waiver deal after the July 31 deadline, allowed a leadoff double in the second inning by Nomar Mazara and no other hits over seven shutout innings. He struck out eight and walked one while improving to 2-0 with a 1.47 ERA in three starts for the A’s.

Mariners 7, Astros 4

Robinson Cano hit a three-run homer to break an eighth-inning tie, giving Seattle a victory against visiting Houston.

Cano’s home run was his fifth of the season and first since returning last week from an 80-game suspension for performance-enhancing drugs. It came off Houston right-hander Collin McHugh (5-2). Cano finished 3-for-5 with two doubles.

Alex Colome (4-5) got the win and Edwin Diaz pitched the ninth for his major-league-leading 48th save. The Mariners’ rally from a 4-2 deficit spoiled a big night by Houston’s Marwin Gonzalez, who went 3-for-4 with a double, a home run and three RBIs.

Red Sox 5, Indians 4

Greg Allen hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in the seventh inning to help Cleveland post a victory at Boston.

Allen’s blast was the big blow as the American League Central-leading Indians prevailed in the opener of a four-game set against the AL East-leading Red Sox. The victory was the 10th in the past 12 games for Cleveland.

Corey Kluber (16-6) became the third 16-game winner in the majors as he allowed three runs and nine hits over 6 1/3 innings. The right-hander struck out six and walked one while winning his fourth straight decision. Michael Brantley added a two-run blast, and Melky Cabrera hit a solo shot for the Indians.

Braves 1, Pirates 0

Bryse Wilson pitched five scoreless innings for a win in his major league debut, and Atlanta made Nick Markakis’ first-inning RBI single hold up for tight win at Pittsburgh.

Sam Freeman, Brad Brach, Jesse Biddle, Jonny Venters and Dan Winkler completed the seven-hit shutout, which broke Atlanta’s four-game losing streak. Winkler pitched the ninth for his second save. The Braves moved a game up over idle Philadelphia atop the National League East.

Wilson struck out five and allowed three hits and three walks. He was called up from Triple-A Gwinnett to make a spot start. The right-hander, 20 years and 243 days old, became the youngest starter in the big leagues this season. He began the season in high Class-A.

Travis Shaw hit a two-run home run to give the Brewers the lead, and Christian Yelich also homered to back the three-hit pitching of Chase Anderson and a shutdown bullpen as Milwaukee dumped visiting Cincinnati.

It was the Brewers’ second straight win after three consecutive losses. Anderson (8-7) gave up only two hits over six innings, both solo home runs. He retired the last 14 Reds he faced before leaving for a pinch hitter, striking out six without a walk.

Cincinnati starter Homer Bailey (1-11) lost his sixth straight decision, yielding three runs on eight hits in six innings. The Reds have lost all but one of his 17 starts this season.

Giants 2, Mets 1 (13 innings)

Andrew McCutchen scored the tiebreaking run on an error, a dropped popup after a collision by shortstop Amed Rosario and left fielder Dominic Smith, in the top of the 13th inning as visiting San Francisco outlasted New York.

The Giants snapped a four-game losing streak. The Mets have won six of 10.

New York starter Zack Wheeler had his streak of six consecutive winning starts end after surrendering one run on five hits and one walk while striking out 10 over seven innings. Wheeler still has not lost a decision since June 22 against the Los Angeles Dodgers, going 6-0 in a span of 10 starts.

White Sox 8, Twins 5

Matt Davidson homered and drove in three runs, and Jose Abreu had two hits and two RBIs to lead Chicago to victory over Minnesota in Minneapolis.

Lucas Giolito (9-9) allowed three runs on five hits over six innings for Chicago, which won for the fifth time in six games. Max Kepler homered and tripled, and Jake Cave hit a two-run homer and scored three times for Minnesota, which lost for just the sixth time in its past 25 games at Target Field.

Before the game, Chicago manager Rick Renteria was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center for precautionary reasons after complaining about feeling lightheaded. A team official later announced that tests revealed no problems. Bench coach Joe McEwing managed the game in Renteria’s absence.

Blue Jays 5, Orioles 3

Kendrys Morales hit two home runs and had four RBIs to help Toronto beat visiting Baltimore.

It was the second two-homer game of the season for Morales, who hit two solo shots at Minnesota on May 1. Kevin Pillar added two doubles and one RBI as the Blue Jays ended a four-game losing streak.

Renato Nunez homered for the Orioles, who have lost four of their last five and nine of 11.

Rays 1, Royals 0

Willy Adames produced the only run Tampa Bay would need with a second-inning RBI infield single, and four pitchers allowed a combined six hits as host Tampa Bay defeated Kansas City.

Hunter Wood made the start for Tampa Bay and pitched 1 2/3 innings before giving way to Ryan Yarbrough (12-5), who gave up two hits and a walk in 5 1/3 innings while coaxing six strikeouts.

Kansas City lost its second straight game and is now 0-4 against Tampa Bay this season. The Royals had two runners on base in the second, fourth and eighth innings but finished 0-for-5 with men in scoring position.
