Armchair Theatre: The Fishing Match (ABC, 1962)
"How old are you?"
"Nineteen."
"Same as me. It's a smashing age, isn't it?"
"Well, I... haven't given it much thought."
"Oh, well, it is! Sixteen or seventeen, you don't know whether you're coming or going; twenty-five, thirty, you've been. But nineteen... Ah, it's just the job!"

Thursday 19 April 1838
7 25
12 10
fine morning F42° at 8 25 – my own broad wheeled cart and George Naylor’s took to Northgate the 2 gateposts that used to stand at the old entrance road, and took back the 2 iron gates that used to hang in front of the house there – breakfast at 8 ½ in ½ hour (A- had Mr. Horner) sat reading from p. 92 to 119 Quarterly Review n°117 for July 1837 Review of Labordes’ Arabia Petrae till 10 – then out all the rest of the day except from about 1 ¼ hour for about an hour with A- she had been checking the Whiteheads’ account of rent and Insurance paid for Oak view mill – 7 years lease expiring 1 May next at £140 per annum – A- found a considerable balance due from then £165+ I wrote her rough draft of her summary of the account and letter to Washington on returning him the account – Sent by Robert Mann’s wife when she brought his dinner at noon A-‘s note to Mr. Mitchell asking him to be here at 2pm tomorrow – written answer he will come – A- not satisfied with SW.’s valuation and his friend Mr. Armytages’ umpireship of Cordingley’s tenant right in A-‘s farm that he is leaving and she employs Mr. Mitchell to value for her - all the day till 7pm with Robert Mann and four levelling about the yew trees in the morning and filling soil in the afternoon + George Naylors’ cart with my own all the morning taking the 2 gateposts to Northgate and bringing back a load a piece of lime-scraps – In the afternoon my own cart bringing Engine ashes to the Lodge road and GN-‘s cart carrying soil from under turret high walling to the trenching at the bottom of the coalpit field – Robert and c° levelling about the yew trees from 6 to 7- Holt came before 12 and we stood talking till after 1 under the 2 great yew trees – Listerwick pit bottomed early this morning a specimen of the coal sent up before breakfast – of very excellent quality – H- came to see what I had determined respecting the engine – he said John Oates would have me buy Rowbottoms’ engine – it would be much cheaper and have power enough – I know H- himself would have no objection to this – but I simply said I did not agree with JO. about this – found no fault with the price of Garforths’ engine – preferred his 8 horse power to Rowbottoms’ 6 horse power – and had determined to have the endless chain – with which determination H- seemed quite satisfied – said he and JO. had calculated it would cost £30 more than the other – H- much advised my driving up heads to Walker pit, and getting coal there – said it would be a great saving and let the engine rest! – I should get a 1/d. a load more at W.P. than Listerwick pit H- said 2 gin-horses would pull 160 loads a day – If that be all said I, 160 x 1/2d. = 6/8 per day would not pay me – the engine resting will cost the 10pc. on outlay = £70 a year – towards which 6/8 a day + the expense of fitting up WP. = £200 new road, and one thing or other (no! said H- £100 would do it) – this would never do – but H- reckoned some considerable saving in driving the main gates which would need to be so large if driven to WP- because having so many colliers at L.P. they would want longer main gates the lads would be fighting and quarrelling in the bottom – and the Incline might never be done – But said I, I will not prevent the possibility of its being done which I should do if I drove up to WP. no! I will drive all so that I can do the Incline or not just as I like – H- said the main gates should be 4ft. high and 4ft. wide – would advise my getting the dib coal first – could get with trail pumps a hundred yards breadth below LP. and all this would be a lodge for the water – I said I saw nothing against this – but I must consider about it – H- to be here on Wednesday and the main gates set out and the manner of working the colliery settled – H- said he had no doubt the colliery would make a £1000 a year but not at first – the straight work (main gates driving) will leave but little clear gain – much talk about Wilsons’ colliery – strongly advised Mr. Holmes’ buying it even if he did give a thousand more than it was worth – for then the coal-trade would be in fewer hands and the prices could be kept up at a remunerative rate – H- will have the extra water turned on Rawsons’ coal within a 12 month from this time – I must see John O- tomorrow – dressed – dinner at 7 20 – A- poorly – said she was tired – worn out – went to bed at 9 – I made coffee – sent her a cup after she was in bed – Read the newspaper and had coffee in the little dining room – came upstairs at 10 and till 10 40 wrote all the above of today – F35° at 10pm fine day tho’ a slight hail shower or two and a slight snow shower after 4pm George N- and his pair of sawyers here today as yesterday – sawing up posts and rails and larch boards – GN. making laundry court posts – from 10 40 to 11 ¼ sat reading the Review (vid. line 3 of today) from p. 119 to p. 133 end of the article on Labrodes’ Journey thro’ Arabia Petrae etc. – the whole article takes up from p. 87 to 133 inclusive – very interesting
