South By Southwest
With the exception of the Wildflower Valdiguie, I rarely drink anything from the ‘Estates Series’ from this producer. Both the Vineyard and Cuvee Series’ are heavily appreciated, and have received copious amounts of ink on these pages. While the 7 Oaks, Falcon’s Perch and Riverstone can be appreciated for their value and consistency–and the Los Osos Merlot almost ALWAYS drinkable–these…

RV Road Trip to Paso Robles
Tumblr media
With our newly retired friend driving his new RV, we headed out from Phoenix to Northern California via Paso Robles.  Of course, we needed to stop part way for the night, so why not go to a wine tasting hub between South and North?  Paso Robles has rolling hills with vineyards and different areas with wineries and tasting rooms providing a multitude of varietals.  We stayed at Wine Country RV Park, which is on the same road as a few of the wineries including J Lohr, Eberle Winery, and EOS.
Eberle Winery
On the 46 on the way into town, Eberle has a great vineyard view and a wide range of varietals for tasting. Using only Paso grown grapes, wine lovers can enjoy 5 different wines of choice for complimentary tasting.  The tasting room is warm and the staff are knowledgeable and friendly.  As our first stop in Paso, this was a great place to start our wine trip.
2014 Estate Chardonnay:  Lots of green apple on the front end and a smooth bit of oak as you finish.  This is a staple of the Eberle winemaker and with no buttery flash it drinks well with or without food.  Be sure to try the 2013 Zinfandel too – lots of fruit with a cocoa and slight peppery ending.
EOS
On our return trip from Napa, we stopped again in Paso and decided to try the winery next door to the RV park – EOS.  This is one of the Fuller properties, of which there are 14 in CA and OR.  The tasting room is very cool and the staff is fun and informational.  There is a $10 tasting fee that is waived with joining the wine club.  We found out that Paso is a test market for UberWine – a VERY affordable way to visit wineries with a professional driver. Next trip, we are leaving the car we brought and using Uber!
2012 Chardonnay:  With a light oak finish, this slightly apple and pineapple chardonnay is very affordable.  Only 4500 cases were produced and aged mainly in stainless.  At $14 retail, this is a nice white for chicken or fish dishes.  We were fortunate to arrive on a 50% off sale day for this varietal, so of course we left with two cases!
Tumblr media
2013 Petite Sirah:  Heavy on blackberry at the start, this smooth sirah finishes with a slight hint of coffee and chocolate. Probably best with food, but definitely a nice red for the winter months.  One case found its way into our car for the ride back to Phoenix.

I didn't blog last night and it weirded a bunch of people out, so I'm throwin a little Sunday special out for the fans: This isn't going to be a normal review, but I want to reiterate THREE exciting new Paso Robles Cabernets that only the cool kids have heard about. It seems like with Paso--on a national or international level at least--the same old brands get trotted out over and over and over and over: the Justins, the Daous, the L'aventures *yawn* I mean it gets so boring and yet there are kids up there pulling the stops out on small production bottles, sourcing from the some of the best vineyards--ridiculously well-sourced fruit, NOT CHEAP--and not sparing any expense in production and oak programmes. You'll never see these on supermarket shelves, probably not even wine shops, *possibly* a couple restaurant placements in LA, they are going to be winemaker-direct--the boxes probably even packed by the winemaker! Why did I pick these 3 for commonality? They share gorgeous packaging, expensive bottles, rich succulent fruit and gobs of structure, beautiful oak and all surfacing in the past 3 or 4 years. A couple of these come from youngsters in long wine-growing and making history and one of them a culmination of lifetime interest. NONE of these are a 'checkbook winery' or vanity labels, labeled shiners or bulk juice. They are all the result of personal hands-on hard work and perservation. None of these are cheap. These aren't playing around down in jLohr, Eberle, Ancient Peaks and Broadside territory so get those bargain stars out of your eyes. Plan on spending a healthy portion of a $100 bill on each one. But that's Paso Robles today boys & girls. Local kid all growwed up! You KNOW I'm always poking around in dark corners looking for exciting new brands, so get familiar with these before anybody else does. 🍷@hotm_wines 🍷@dustynaborwines 🍷@twfermco and for those of you capable of processing direct links, here's my last three reviews on these: ➡️http://wine1percent.com/2020/07/26/hearts-abound/ ➡️https://wine1percent.com/2020/04/11/shining-star/ ➡️https://wine1percent.com/2020/05/14/forward-never-straight/ (at Paso Robles Wine Country) https://www.instagram.com/p/CDZeMjoH_pP/?igshid=1082lw33ue4lj
