My issue with Izaya being a damsel in distress who needs Shizuo to save him is like. Do yall not remember Yodogiri Jinnai lmao. Izaya got stabbed and the moment he got his bearings back he tore that whole shit down just to prove a fucking point. Shizuo doesn’t need to rescue Izaya, at best Izaya would have him there just to show off a little or because he wants to see Shizuo beat someone’s ass not because he needs him there
And if he did ever get helped without asking for it first he’d be such a little angry bitch about it. He’d be snarling and clawing and spitting the whole time not whimpering and saying “thank you” he’s a prick for a reason

Okay, so if people want to say Izaya is to blame for what everybody else did, then I guess it’s Shinra’s fault that Izaya began to believe it’s okay to hurt those you love just because of his words, and if you dig deeper, it’s Yadogiri’s or Kasane’s fault that Shinra fell in love with Celty because Yadogiri is the one that had Shingen steal the head in the first place. So Yadogiri is responsible for everything? (Heck, he also was the reason Ruri’s parents were killed, the reason Ruri became a serial killer, the reason Vorona and Slon kidnapped Akane, the reason Celty came to Ikebukuro, the reason Anri’s parents died, the reason Anri became the Saika wielder, the reason Akabayashi fell in love, the reason Shinra fell in love, the reason Shinra’s mother left him and Shingen, the reason Shinra got stabbed, the reason Izaya vowed to make Nakura pay, the reason Izaya became as twisted as he did, the reason Izaya became infatuated with the idea of living forever, the reason he wanted to start the war and Jinnai was, in the long run, the cause for all the events that transpired in Izaya’s wake. And there’s a lot more Yadogiri did and/or is indirectly responsible for, but I don’t care to list it all right now.

durarara!! au where simon makes izaya take on the raira trio (and saki) for like an internship (after punching him) so instead of the rest of the series being a drawn out gang war, it ends up being a high-stakes dark urban fantasy version of the office.
-namie is still there, and she and mikado have bi-hourly death glare matches
-anri continues trying to slash izaya, coming up with more and more complex ways to get him, and ultimately recruiting mairu and kururi into her “shank the twink” schemes
-masaomi still flirts with anri. and sometimes namie. and also mikado. no amount of pointing out that saki is literally right there will get him to stop, and pointing her out too much usually makes her start flirting too
-initially, only namie, izaya, and saki are allowed to touch the Evil Master Plan Chessboard, but izaya and saki both lose privileges (izaya for one too many fires, and saki for reasons no one is comfortable discussing)
-izaya still gets shanked by yodogiri but anri doesn’t try to slash him while he’s in the hospital bc she’s way too nice. manami very much does try, and izaya constantly taunts them both about it
-manami joins anri and the twins in the “slash a bitch” team
-mikado and saki seem to be having a subtle contest of who can be more unsettlingly adorable
-if izaya, mikado, and saki are all in a room together, someone else has to be there with them. otherwise that room will soon be on fire.
-if izaya, mikado, saki, and the twins are all in a room together, then that room is probably already on fire.
-saki is the only person there who genuinely likes izaya. this does not stop her from betraying him at the drop of a hat if someone she cares about is in danger. or if it’s just kinda funny.
-izaya has to find a better hiding spot for celty’s head and sulks bc now he can’t prance around his office monologuing about valhalla with it. this has convinced namie that there may in fact be some sort of benevolent deity.
-sometimes mikage shows up. the raira trio spends the better part of several months trying to figure out if izaya is sleeping with her or namie. this comes to a conclusion when they walk in on namie and mikage making out.
-during shizuo and izaya’s pointless death matches, the whole office shows up to cheer him on. and by him i mean shizuo.
-mikado eventually starts timing izaya’s Evil Monologues
-anri has yakuza immunity bc absolutely no one is stupid enough to piss off akabayashi. she ends up acting as a spy for the awakusu-kai but unfortunately most of what she has to report is “yes orihara is still insane. no i don’t think he’s been doing any drugs but honestly that’s actually even more depressing he’s just Like That”
-izaya does still do his Evil Plans but he has to be even more careful and every now and then one of the kids gets in trouble and he ends up getting forced to help out
-the recruitment process: “will this be a paid internship?” “of course this is a paid internship, i’m not a monster”
-izaya’s crush on shinra gets increasingly obvious and somehow absolutely nobody notices
-every single one of izaya’s attempts at a hot pot party fail miserably

He had initially plotted to absorb the underground gambling ring 'Amphisbaena', and had planned to use the informant Orihara Izaya as a means to this end. However he'd lost more than he had gained as a result, and had fallen to a position no better than that of a cur. Hiroto mulled over the fact, clenching his fists forcefully. His nails dug into his palms viciously - he wanted to hurt himself to vent his hatred which he could not inflict on the world. Even as he was aware that his actions were meaningless, he was unable to control his impulses. Even so, his grip was only strong enough for his nails to barely nip into his skin, and at most there was only some bleeding from his hands. Hiroto was at a loss, and in his helplessness his mind was consumed by hatred and terror. Have I lost to Orihara Izaya? No. I haven't. That can't be possible.
Those red-eyed people... What was that?
As Orihara Izaya toyed with him and had his entire organisation swallowed by the 'Dollars', he had witnessed, clearly, an 'object' that was beyond common knowledge. Without even the time to consider what it was, he, too, had become involved with that 'object'. And at the same time, the whole of his destiny had fallen into the clutches of the informant Orihara Izaya. Lacking even the ability to escape, he returned to his old home on the outskirts of Ikebukuro - the mansion occupying the expensive land fully conveyed his family's wealth. At the sight of the house - unchanged since he had last lived in it - Hiroto felt some measure of comfort.
That's right, I still have Dad. As long as I have Dad and Grandpa, I can get out of this! Although I might get told off for selling drugs, surely they'll help me cover it up. And Grandpa knows someone in the Diet, too; that guy - Yokoi, or something. That's right. Power.
I don't know what stunt that was with the red-eyed people, but they weren't operating in broad daylight, so that means they must not have much power themselves.
If it were his usual calm self, he would most likely have found this deduction to be ludicrous, and simply given up on this line of thought. But to the Shijima Hiroto of the present, the idea was as though the singular strand of lifesaving spider-silk in the hell he was in.
That's right
I haven't lost yet.
It'll be my comeback from now on.
Although Dad and the rest have to sacrifice some, that can't be helped, can it?
It would be bad news for them, too, if I got caught, after all.
To his present self, even his family now numbered amongst the tools at his disposal - and so, he strode unhesitatingly through the front door. There were a few pairs of shoes by the doorway, probably belonging to guests, but he continued through the corridor without paying much heed.
Voices came from the living room. It seemed his father and grandfather were both present. But who were they talking to?
As he thought this, there was a sudden chill down his spine.
It can't be that Orihara Izaya is here, can it?
The worst case scenario in his mind was that Orihara Izaya intended to take his family and the power that came with it, too. The image of his family, red-eyed, had Hiroto overcome by a strong sense of uneasiness, the pressure of which seemed sufficient to have his backbone creaking. But that was not possible - it should not be possible, he convinced himself repeatedly, before he slammed the door open. Consequently, the scene that greeted his eyes did not contain Izaya - there were only a number of well-dressed guests. Unconsciously heaving a sigh of relief at Hiroto's appearance, his father exclaimed. "Isn't this Hiroto; what's this? Coming home so suddenly."
"Uh... It's nothing, I just missed everyone." Hiroto knew well that his issue could not be discussed in front of the guests, and so he weaved a simple excuse.
"Really? Never mind that now, come here and greet our guests."
Following this, a fawning smile spread on his father's face, as he introduced Hiroto to the guests. "This is our son, Hiroto; Yodogiri-san."
Yodogiri?
The name seemed familiar. Was he a business partner of his father or grandfather?
Thoughts ran through his mind as he looked towards his father, and immediately he felt that something was strange.
If his father and grandfather - powerful people themselves - had such servile smiles on their faces, this guest must be someone important as well. But even so, both of their eyes held emotions distinct from mere submissiveness.
Unease, anxiety, terror. Were these not, to his own gaze - as he fell completely into the trap of Orihara Izaya and his associates - were these not exactly alike to his eyes at that time? Where on earth had this guest Yodogiri come from?
Hiroto eyed the guest suspiciously - without waiting for his greeting, the guest bowed and said:
"Ah, I know many things about you, Shijima Hiroto-kun."
There were two guests. One of them was an old man he had never met before, and the other was a young woman in a western suit, who seemed to be an employee. The one speaking to him was the old man, whereas the woman only watched him in silence, her gaze sharp. "I am Yodogiri, and this antisocial secretary here is Kujiragi."
"Oh, I see..." Why did they know his name? As though answering to the question on his mind, the old man smiled amiably, and said - "Oh, it's nothing - I do personally think I have quite many connections, but honestly I've never once imagined this, that I would have the grandson of Shijima Giichirou-shi working for me."
"...?"
"Aah, sorry. I say you're working for me, but it doesn't mean I'm controlling you. It only happens that what you do is beneficial to me, judging based on results alone."
"I, I don't understand at all what you're... No, I mean, what do you mean, sir..." The old man interrupted Hiroto's jumbled words, and with a warm voice said, absent-mindedly - "He's... Orihara Izaya-san, isn't he?"
"...?!"
"In my network I know some people who're involved with him, but to use methods like today's, to infiltrate so deeply - you're the first one."
Why did that guy's name crop up?
Eh... Huh? --Eh, uh... Nonono! What is this?!
Hiroto's mind drew an instantaneous blank, and as it began to stir even more chaotically, Yodogiri still continued - "You are in a delectable position, Shijima Hiroto-kun."
"...?"
"Orihara Izaya-san now imagines you fully in his hands. You've even entered the proximity of several 'objects' desirable to me, and are fairly close to them. And now the two of us have met, and connected. Do you not feel this is a beautiful work of fate?" The way he spoke was as though he were a salesman promoting a product - he sustained his own pace, while steadily attempting to pressure his opponent. And as the premise of all this - who was this old man who understood his current circumstance so implicitly?
Even as Hiroto's body burned under a fear different from before, he still recalled the 'power' he believed in - his family that held high status in society. And following such, he turned pleading eyes to his grandfather. And then, his grandfather nodded at him.
"Hiroto."
"G-grandpa..." "What you've done up till now, I've heard all of it." The perspiration sliding down his wrinkled face was, perhaps, fearful cold sweat.
The grandfather, still holding to his smile, subservience and nervousness intermingled, nodded strongly at his grandson. "As for the Awakusu-kai, I will think of something. You don't have to worry about that."
"Grandpa!"
As expected!
So long as Grandpa has this kind of power, even if it's the Awakusu-kai - we can take anything!
His grandfather's words injected an infallible shot of strength to bolster his emotions. He firmly trusted that as long as his grandfather was around, the strange guest would not be anyone to fear. Nonetheless, this faith in his grandfather - this indomitable trust - was, by the following words, trampled to dust.
"So don't worry and follow whatever Yodogiri-san says."
"Huh..."
"Listen here, don't you let down Yodogiri-san's expectations!"
The tone of his grandfather was commanding - clearly showing through was his 'terror' towards the guest before them. And so Shijima understood. He had not become a mongrel only now. Rather, it was since very, very long ago - perhaps from the moment he was born, that he was sentenced to a life of being the dog of others.
The young man, who did not possess the courage to defy his fate, who could not even scream his protest against this conclusion - He simply, despairingly, gave up everything.
At the sight of this young man, Yodogiri smacked his own forehead and shook his head. "No no no, there's no need to complicate things. I only wanted to request a few favours from Hiroto. Please do come to help from now on - consistently, of course, not only sometimes. Of course, I will thank you accordingly."
"...um, eh, I, what must I do..." Hiroto asked shakily - rather than Yodogiri's origins, he was more concerned about his own future.
"Ah, I apologise. This, well - frankly, I've been interested in it for a long time, now." The old man who called himself Yodogiri smiled warmly, and spoke the following words lowly: "The Dollars, that lively, robust organisation."

Mamiya Manami was an avenger.
It could be said that she was living solely to despise Orihara Izaya.
She was meant to have died by a suicide oath; the only driving force she had to continue living now was her hatred towards Izaya, who had degraded her determination and despair. In that sense, it could also be said that Izaya was keeping her alive.
Manami was aware of this herself, but she had no particular thoughts on the matter.
If she could see Izaya's face as he died in despair, her life would be complete. It was this belief that enabled her to commit a crime. Throwing a live head out in front of Ikebukuro station, in broad daylight. Exposing the existence of Celty Sturluson's head to the world, and thereby seizing one of Izaya's advantages.
She had not considered so far as to how exactly Izaya would suffer as a result.
She had done it because she thought he would hate it; that was all. And now as well, for similar reasons, she was acting without thought to the consequences.
"...next would be here." She muttered to herself, voice cold, as she looked up to a small building on a residential street. Yodogiri Jinnai. A broker rival to Orihara Izaya.
Information logged in a computer in Izaya's office at one of his safehouses. Not only that; she had stolen all of the information in Izaya's personal computer, and copied it to the USB drive in her pocket. In order to pass the data to Izaya's enemy Yodogiri, she was seeking out his hideouts one by one. But after ten of them still she had encountered no building with any sign of people.
She had broken into some of them, to no avail. She was aware of the danger of her actions, but she felt she would not mind much if Yodogiri found and killed her. He was an enemy of a level Izaya had to guard against.
It would be fortuitous if she could pass all of Izaya's data to such a character. It would be pity not to see Izaya suffering in the flesh, but if she were killed here and now it would only mean her driving force had only lasted her so long. As she justified her actions with ths twisted logic, she made to break into this building in the same way, but - She stopped in her tracks by the back door. The lights were visibly on on the other side of the frozen glass.
"..." On alert, as she peeked to see the situation - There was the sound of a key turning from the inside, and from the opened door a young man appeared. He wore pajamas stained liberally with red, and one leg dragged along what appeared like a cast. There was no way this could be normal; he emitted the air of a victim in a murder case, or, conversely, an assailant after a bloodbath. Furthermore, behind his glasses, his eyes were unnaturally bloodshot..
"...Possessed by Saika." As she murmured this under her breath, Manami felt no fear. If he was possessed by Saika, he could be under Niekawa Haruna. Perhaps Izaya had read her moves, and had him come to Yodogiri's hideout beforehand.
Those were her thoughts, but she quickly realized this might not be the case. Because the man's face was familiar. She had seen it in a photograph when she was investigating everything of Izaya for her revenge.
This is... The underground doctor...
Shinra, yes, Kishitani Shinra.
She remembered that much as Izaya had countless pawns, the only human he could call a friend was this underground doctor. Why was this man here?
"...ah, evening. Don't be shocked. I'm not anyone suspicious."
The man smiled as he limped along on one leg. Probably instead of a crutch, he gripped a mop he must have gotten hands on in the building. "Kishitani... Shinra-san."
"Oh, why do you know my name?" Still red-eyed, Shinra cocked his head. As expected - he was not subordinate to Niekawa. And Manami began to contemplate other matters.
A friend of Orihara Izaya.
Would it hurt that man if his friend were to die?

I was thinking about that post I reblogged a few days ago about how Shizuo never had to face the consequences of his actions and wanted to ramble about how Durarara!! just has a huge lack of accountability entirely.
Vorona is a hired mercenary and assassin who is addicted to killing. She tried to excuse her behavior, saying that it was a quest to gain acceptance from her father, but she later admits that was a lie, and only kills because it feels good. Just because her murders were before she came to Japan doesn’t mean that... they didn’t happen? And it’s not as if she didn’t attempt murder while she was in Japan, just that she wasn’t successful.
It’s explicitly stated that “Jinnai Yodogiri” (really, Kasane) has willingly participated in morally bankrupt acts for entirely self-serving reasons. Kasane even refers to herself as a villain. She shows no remorse for her actions and certainly cannot be considered to be a good person.
Shinra is a cruel and manipulative person, lying and playing dirty to ensure Celty never leaves him. Ever since someone pointed out that Celty exhibits signs of Stockholm Syndrome, I couldn’t unsee it. Tom even implies that Shinra is the most manipulative person out of anyone in the series, and I agree. He twists and manipulates everything around Celty, so that she can only see him. Shinra never lets Celty choose anything for herself. The one time that Celty was truly making a choice for herself was when she wanted to leave Japan. But even then, Shinra slashed her with Saika, severing her head from her body once again, and ensuring that she stayed with him.
Ran was going to rape a middle school girl and film the whole thing. While he did go to jail for the Yellow Scarves incident, once he got out, he tortured Mimizu, and attempted to rape her. When Mikage stopped him, he then threatened to molest Mikage instead.
There are a lot more examples, but I chose the four that are the most egregious to me. I don’t know why all of these people got a pass for their behaviors, and why there were no consequences.

If you people are gonna blame Izaya for what everybody in the series did, I guess you might as well blame Yadogiri for what Izaya did then as well, because he’s the true mastermind behind the story at large.

Cherry (Alongside part 5)
New installment of the Hot Single Dad Shizuo AU, Alongside, for my good friend @fozzie! Beta by @scarlet-blossoms. Rated T, warnings: drinking.
Cherry
Izaya takes great care not to look as if he's calculating every minute of every day around the hope of crossing paths with Heiwajima Shizuo. He's seen him four more times since the day Mikage introduced them, and he's never spent as much time in this horrible coffee place in the five years Mikage's been trying to insert herself into his life as he has in the past two months.
All his efforts fall flat when Shizuo himself is here, of course. Izaya can't pinpoint what it is about the man that makes him feel like a teenager; for as long as he can remember he's always been drawn to the dark and dangerous—he's always been drawn to Shiki.
He hasn't thought about Shiki so much in a long time either. It happens without the usual spikes of burning fury and shame and regret; it's like contemplating a photo he has little memory of. It doesn't matter, really. Shiki is serving the sentence Izaya bestowed on him alongside half of his organization, and when he inevitably walks out and finds Izaya again, his touch won't be gentle. Izaya doesn't wish that things had gone differently anymore.
It's not Shiki's touch Izaya is thinking about.
Izaya doesn't feel the burn of the coffee as he drinks; the taste is bad but the caffeine is good, and it's all he needs right now. His eyesight has been getting worse all day long. He can barely see the numbers he's looking at on his laptop, and though he knows his glasses are within reach the reaching itself doesn't feel worth doing.
It's almost five in the evening. Long past the time Shizuo would've shown up, if he planned to.
Izaya closes his eyes and does his best to appreciate how stifling the sun is through the windows of the shop. The air conditioning isn't any better than what they serve, food and drink-wise. The only selling point of this place is its proximity with the elementary school Shizuo takes Awakusu Akane to every day. His face feels like it's boiling more than burning, the growing headache a solid weight just under his skin, from temple to temple, all over his forehead. He knows part of it is because he's been surviving off coffee and spite for most of the day.
And then, miraculously: "Orihara."
Izaya shudders. For a moment he doesn't move at all, like he hasn't heard Shizuo, like he can't feel his chest fill with warmth and his face grow hotter than the sun alone warrants. When he blinks his eyes open Shizuo is standing between his table and the window; if it were a few hours later the sun would've been setting right behind him like it was trying to crown him with gold.
"Heiwajima," Izaya says, a little reverently.
Shizuo looks to his sides before taking a seat in front of Izaya, like he's trying to make sure he's not bothering anyone. As if Izaya would even let him approach more than twice if he were undesirable company.
He brings his third coffee to his lips to ground himself. "You're here late," he says.
"What?" Shizuo blinks at him endearingly. "Oh, right. Yeah. Turns out Akane's sleeping over at a friend's place tonight. She just told me about it."
"Feeling abandoned?"
Shizuo laughs at this, warm and self-conscious. "I wish I didn't, but yeah, I do."
It's easy enough to get coffee now. The rush stops at four like clockwork on every school day and the counter is deserted; it barely takes a minute for Shizuo to walk there and ask for his own drink —hot chocolate, Izaya knows—before coming back to sit in front of him. Izaya feels the sort of content he only ever approaches on the rare day work gets interesting anymore.
They drink in silence for a moment. They're not quite close enough yet that conversation comes easy, even if Izaya is stripped of his ability to feel shame whenever this man is around. It's all for Shizuo's sake, really.
Finally, Shizuo looks at him with a lopsided smile and says, "Sharaku isn't here?"
"No," Izaya replies. "I'm all alone." He knows his eyelids droop at the words. Shizuo doesn't seem to be affected.
"You been working here all day?"
"Pretty much."
Shizuo rests his chin onto the back of his free hand pensively. "Can't imagine this is the best spot around town for work," he murmurs.
"It's good enough for me," Izaya says into the rim of his paper cup. He doesn't drink from it. Instead he adds, "and there's always the chance of running into someone I want to see."
Shizuo blinks at him softly.
Then he straightens his back and says, "Wanna get a drink?"
Izaya puts the cup down and tries not to let the trembling in his hand show. "Yes."
--
It's too early for drinks. It's not time yet for salarymen to get out of work and the sun is still too high, too conspicuous. Izaya takes Shizuo to one of Awakusu's former bars, one that has been taken over by Yodogiri Jinnai and his terrifying secretary. Izaya doesn't have to present an ID before being admitted in and offered a corner table away from the bulk of the room. The place is literally underground but not figuratively so; there's music and good spirits, and only a few other tables are occupied, and no sunlight; but the other patrons are college girls talking around a margarita and a lonely man at the counter drinking a deep red wine.
"I'll get us something," Izaya says, leaning too close for Shizuo not to feel his breath on the side of his face. He can't tell if Shizuo blushes in the bluish light of the place, but the strength of his gaze is good enough.
He feels giddy as he walks to the counter. Like he's about to topple over from how light he feels, or get a skip to his steps like he did ten years ago.
Izaya didn't just go to this bar to escape the sun and the heat. It has a large collection of beers, some of which are sweet enough to drown out the bitterness. Shizuo doesn't like coffee, and Izaya doesn't think starting the evening with heavy alcohols will win him any points. The German cherry-red beer the bartender offers him might.
"I worked as a bartender once," Shizuo says when he sits back down. The barkeep himself isn't far behind, holding their drinks on a plate. "Thank you," he adds to the man once he's served, and if he gives his glass an apprehensive look, he doesn't seem completely disgusted.
Izaya himself is only partial to beer when the heat demands it, and he prefers his sour. "It won't bite you," he tells Shizuo gently.
"I know that."
He makes a curious face as soon as he takes a sip; Izaya can't help but smile when he does. It's like Shizuo is pulling the light out of him from where he buried it years and years ago.
He's never been this attracted to someone in his life, and it's a man who adopted a girl no one else wanted, a man who comes to pick her up every day to spend time with her at work, a man with a life and with his happiness.
A man capable of looking at Izaya and relaxing in his presence.
Izaya swallows a little painfully. "So. A bartender?"
"Yeah. I was terrible at it, though. Kept breaking bottles and glasses while cleaning them."
"You must be strong," Izaya comments. "Glass is harder to break than it looks, unless the place you worked at was using some really fine silverware."
"It wasn't. I've always been rather strong."
He doesn't look like it. He's thin and tall and his fingers are skinny, only callused from the use of pens and sometimes cut from handling paper all day. "Mmh," Izaya says. He's thinking about what those hands would feel like on him.
Shizuo looks like he should be nursing a hot drink around a fireplace somewhere, with a book in hand and his daughter napping next to him. Maybe a dog as well. He doesn't look like someone Izaya should be taking to an illegally-run bar in town, however clean the bar looks. He's legit. He has a family. He probably wouldn't appreciate Izaya so much if he knew Izaya was responsible for his kid ending up without parents, let alone if he knew the reasons Izaya had done it.
Izaya's been repeating those things to himself since the first time he met him. So far he hasn't been able to stop himself from wanting.
"I never really got to try out temp jobs," he says lightly. The light overhead is rotating slowly, making Shizuo's face appear and disappear in different shades of blue. It doesn't make him less attractive. "I've been doing what I do since I graduated high school."
"Straight from high school senior to career advisor?" Shizuo asks, curious.
Izaya smiles. "Sort of."
Shizuo chuckles. "I went through so many jobs after high school. Didn't have what it took for college, so I just tried everything I could get hired at, but I wasn't good at anything."
Izaya doesn't say anything while Shizuo takes another sip of his beer. The movement isn't forced in any way; Shizuo actually closes his eyes to appreciate it, and it makes Izaya's eyesight feel even hazier than it had with a headache earlier. He want to put on his glasses now, just so he doesn't miss anything there is to see on Shizuo's face.
"In the end I was twenty-five and no closer to stability than I was at eighteen when I left home," Shizuo said in a low voice. "But I like writing. Not writing like—" he splutters, and the blue on his skin gets darker as he blushes deeply. Izaya can feel his own blood running warm through his body from the alcohol, and he leans forward. "I don't write stories or anything," Shizuo continues. "I like calligraphy."
"Really?" and Izaya doesn't have to fake the fascination in his voice. He doesn't think he's ever been so genuinely interested in someone.
"I've always liked writing letters. I got my first quill and textbook when I was fifteen, from my parents," Shizuo explains. "So I put that on my resume and tried to work for a post office, and it turns out that I wasn't so bad at that."
He looks faintly embarrassed after that. He drinks a third of his glass in one go and smacks the bottom of it against the wooden tabletop when he puts it down. It's loud enough that the girls two tables over can hear it in the still-empty room, but not loud enough that the old man at the counter moves his head around to look.
Izaya links his fingers together and rests his chin on their back. "You should be proud of yourself," he says.
"Not really. My parents always helped me support myself until I could do it myself."
"But you didn't ask for more than this, did you?" He knows his smile isn't especially comforting, but he tries. "And now you even have your own child."
At this, Shizuo's face relaxes completely, and his eyes turn warm and loving.
You can't be jealous of a kid, Izaya tells himself. It doesn't help much. "For what it's worth," he says, "I think you've got something not a lot of people, college graduates or not, can claim to."
His foot nudges Shizuo's under the table, and he can't completely pretend that it was accidental.
The bar fills up through the hours. It's located next to one of the office buildings Yodogiri owns, and when the clock hits seven men in suits start pouring in in small groups. They're livelier than the college girls were. The wine man at the counter is gone, leaving only an enormous tip behind that the barkeep has pocketed with an appreciative glint in his eyes.
They speak until the sound around drowns them too much to. Even so Shizuo orders another beer, and so does Izaya; the alcohol is running hot inside him now, and he's glad he picked beer rather than something else. He hasn't eaten all day. His body feels like it's vibrating in rhythm with every crash of glass on wood around them. With every movement Shizuo makes that has their knees or legs touching under the tiny round table.
Izaya feels hot and cold at the same time, and he knows it's not from intoxication.
He doesn't know exactly when Shizuo throws him a loaded glance. It must be around eight thirty now. Izaya declines Shizuo's attempt to pay his share of the evening and drops a few more bills than necessary on the table. He usually doesn't need to pay because of his relationship with Yodogiri, but Shizuo doesn't need to know that. Izaya doesn't want him to. He's not looking very much further ahead than fresh air and a dark sky to hide them from view.
It feels good to take in the night air. Next to him Shizuo rummages through his pocket and takes out a crumpled pack of Winstons, the red of it vibrant under yellow street lamps. He lights one with a carefree flick of his wrist and a pack of matches, and Izaya watches, mesmerized, as he breathes in the smoke.
Shizuo turns his head away to exhale. "Sorry. I should've asked you if—"
"This is perfectly okay," Izaya replies.
He's never smoked himself. He knows all about kissing someone who does, though.
Shizuo's eyes never leave his when he steps closer; Izaya feels his back press against the wall and his entire body shiver; his blood is simmering, his heart feels electric, every breath that leaves him does so with a shake, like he doesn't know how to use his lungs anymore. Shizuo is close enough now that Izaya can better take in the difference in their height and the delightful crow's feet around his eyes. Like his face has been marked by laughter and it can never leave him.
Shizuo exhales again, right to the side of Izaya's face. "Are you…" he tries.
Izaya slides a hand into the space between Shizuo's fingers and his mouth, between the end of the cigarette that's warm from Shizuo's lips and the lips themselves; it travels onward to touch his hair and pull.
Izaya closes his eyes right as their lips touch. He feels Shizuo move immediately, feels his shoulder flex as he throws away the cigarette he's barely touched so he can touch the sides of Izaya's face instead. Izaya breathes out against him because it's better than moaning outright and sounding like he's eighteen—but all Shizuo does is open his mouth like he's been waiting for this for hours.
He tastes sweet and acidic like the beer he drank earlier. Izaya isn't fond of cherries but he thinks, if he were to eat them directly from Shizuo's mouth, that he could sustain himself on them alone.
He licks his lips when Shizuo steps back. He's not very far, just enough that their noses aren't knocking each other out of the way and they can look at each other without getting cross-eyed. Shizuo's lips are red, and his cheeks as well.
"I wasn't sure you were interested—"
"You have to be kidding me," Izaya cuts in.
The hand he still has holding the back of Shizuo's head trails downward until it touches skin; his fingers are shaking.
"Okay," Shizuo says with another smile. "So I'm self-conscious."
"What for—"
Shizuo kisses him before he finishes, and all Izaya can do is close his eyes again and let himself be pushed gently against the alley wall and suck on Shizuo's bottom lip like he can draw the affection out of it more fully like this. His body is getting hotter and hotter by the second, embarrassingly so.
He's the one who cuts it off this time.
"If I could," he says, moving his head back, "I would've climbed you two months ago right in the middle of that shitty café."
Shizuo's eyes have never looked so black. "Sorry," he says, heated. "It's just that I've never had anyone be this into me before. You're pretty hot yourself."
Izaya laughs. He bangs the back of his head against the wall a little, when he leans back completely; Shizuo pulls forward with the movement rather than stepping back, and it feels so good to just have this man holding him loosely, hands traveling down from Izaya's face all the way to his sides. His heart is dancing in his chest and his lips feel like they've been branded. He doesn't remember feeling this many butterflies for any of his teenage crushes.
"Shizuo," Izaya says.
"Yeah?" he feels the answer like a caress on his neck. Shizuo is nuzzling it, and it's almost enough to bring tears to Izaya's eyes. "Izaya."
It's a different sort of attraction altogether. It bubbles out of Izaya like laughter and makes all the ice around his heart thaw, and it's like feeling again completely, in a way he never thought he would again.
He feels fixed.
