Team RAIN - Pages 916-919 Links: Previous · Next · All Pages · Webtoon · Wikia · Send me a message/question!
Back in August 2021, I asked around for some OCs I could include in this chapter, and lo they be;
@danzene‘s Haema Oxblood
@furubatsu ‘s Almand Prun & Sienna Sard
@fallentitan98‘s Ava Coolwind
With Avon in the capable hands of Lucero Hawthorne, Chapter 3 draws to a close. Unfortunately this appears to be where RAIN ends, but I hope to at least finish the scripts and share those if people are interested.

未定的注定 (Undecided Fate) --LYRICS RETRANSLATION + NOTES
A/N: finally, after all these years, I post something that isn't a shitpost. Was chatting with discord friends while playing ToT episode 9 and that one line by luke made me wanna translate this. Uhh, translation notes at the end. Have fun reading and geeking out with me. This is a personal translation of the lyrics of ToT's official theme song
曾是我 寄身在黑暗中 Ceng shi wo ji shen zai hei’an zhong I used to be stuck in the dark 走尽夜路也盼有灯属于我 zou jin ye lu ye pan you deng shuyu wo Walking the night path with a lamp/light of mine 是否等候我的窗将有微光涌动 shifou denghou wo de chuang jiang you wei guang yong dong Whether a (soft) light shimmers through my windows 绽放成你 温热在我手 zhanfang cheng ni wen re zai wo shou Gently blooms into you in my hands
你是未定的希望 ni shi weiding de xiwang You're the undetermined hope 却是注定的光芒 que shi zhuding de guangmang Yet the fated light 照引我的心 zhao yin wo de xin Light up my heart 到黑夜退去 dao heiye tuiqu Retreat into the night
愿我也能温暖你 yuan wo ye neng wennuan ni Hope that I can also warm you up 走向未定的真相 zouxiang weiding de zhenxiang Walking towards the undetermined truth 解除命运的捆绑 jiechu mingyun de kunbang Untie the restraints of life's path 无所畏惧和你相倚 wu suo weiju he ni xiang yi Fearlessly lean on eachother with you
在余生每个黎明 zai yusheng mei ge liming At dawn, for the rest of our lives 你是谜 封锁住我眼眸 ni shi mi fengsuo zhu wo yan mou You're the riddle that locked my eyes shut 你是意义占据我所思所有 ni shi yiyi zhanju wo suo si suoyou You're the reason occupying all my thoughts 你是未定的美好我开始猜不透 ni shi weiding di meihao wo kaishi cai bu tou You're the indetermined perfection that I can't figure out
现在我才懂 为何萦梦 xianzai wo cai dong weihe ying meng Only now have I realized why we dream 你是未定的希望 ni shi weiding de xiwang You're the undetermined hope 却是注定的光芒 que shi zhuding de guangmang Yet the fated light 照引我的心 zhao yin wo de xin Light up my heart
走向未定的真相 zouxiang weiding de zhenxiang Walking towards the undetermined truth 解除命运的捆绑 jiechu mingyun de kunbang Untie the restraints of life's path 无所畏惧和你相倚 wu suo weiju he ni xiang yi Fearlessly lean on eachother with you 在余生每个黎明 zai yusheng mei ge liming At dawn, for the rest of our lives
已注定 yi zhuding Already fated
你是未定的希望 ni shi weiding de xiwang You're the undetermined hope
却是注定的光芒 que shi zhuding de guangmang Yet the fated light 照引我的心 zhao yin wo de xin Light up my heart 到黑夜退去 dao heiye tuiqu Retreat into the night 愿我也能温暖你 yuan wo ye neng wen nuan ni Hope that I can also warm you up
走向未定的真相 zouxiang weiding de zhenxiang Walking towards the undetermined truth 解除命运的捆绑 jiechu mingyun de kunbang Untie the restraints of life's path 无所畏惧和你相倚 wu suo weiju he ni xiang yi Fearlessly lean on eachother with you 在余生每个黎明 zai yusheng mei ge liming At dawn, for the rest of our lives 已注定 yi zhuding Already fated
NOTES:
绽放 specifically means the opening of the flower petals when a flower blooms Also MC is very flower-coded (rosa) So i thought that was a nice detail
Now the "warming up" specifically means the type of comforting warmth that campfires or torches will give you on a cold dark night
解除 (untie) could possibly be a reference to how the NXX investigation gets more and more complicated, with an overwhelming amount of cases practically "tangled up" in eachother, so you're slowly picking it apart one by one with the team (aka your soulmates)
Also I specifically used "lifes path" for 命运 because that phrase is only used to talk about the course of a persons life, aka the events/path that life has laid down for you (your canon events, if you will)
意义 means like, the significance, meaning or reason/motivation behind someone's actions, but idk how to translate that
黎明 was hard to translate, cause it can mean both dawn and dusk, or any time of day (altho dawn and dusk are the most used, hehe crepusculum and diluculum) but it basically mean that the two relies on eachother every single day for the rest of their lives
A/N: That's it! Hope this was comprehensible to read

(I’m not quite sure if the miniprompt thing is still open, in which case, feel free to ignore this!) What would Meng Shi as a bad mother be like? Would Meng Yao still look for the Jin, hoping his father would be kinder to him than his mother, or would he defy her and run away to another sect? Just curious on how JGY/Meng Yao without any kind of love in his life would be like, basically.
Meng Yao left when he was twelve.
It was the youngest he could manage it, as young as he possibly could while still pretending to be older – the other whores had been pretty explicit about the sorts of things that happened to you when you were a kid all on your lonesome, and he wasn’t about to jump out of the frying pan and into the fire, no matter how desperate he sometimes got. No matter how cold, how hungry, how despondent: his mother spent all the money she earned drinking, and when she drank she vomited up hate towards him for not having won her the cushy concubine position she’d hoped for when she’d allowed herself to fall pregnant with him – as if any sane man would ever accept a poisonous bitch like her.
He’d thought for a while that he could go to his father, but that illusion had fallen away as he’d gotten older. Why would anyone want even a reminder of his mother around? Especially if they were rich and powerful…no, Jin Guangshan was undoubtedly a dead end.
Anyway, if he went there, then there was no way he’d ever be able to escape the mockery that followed him around. Son of a bitch, they called him, and he agreed; son of a whore, bastard, dirty unclean thing…
No, it wasn’t worth that sort of infamy, for nothing but fulfilling a hateful woman’s long-lost dreams.
Better to start again on his own terms.
To start entirely from scratch.
Even if it meant throwing himself into the pits of hell to get there.
“I have cultivation talent,” he said to the soldier in white and red. “My father was a cultivator, so I should have it, too. Is that enough to join the Wen sect?”
“It should be, we’re not that picky,” the soldier agreed. “Are you sure you’re fifteen?”
“I’ve just got a young face,” Meng Yao said firmly. “Now tell me again what happens when I join – what do I need to do?”
“That depends on your level of talent when they test you. If you’re average, like me, you’ll go to the barracks to become a soldier. If you’re talented, you’ll be sent back to the Nightless City, and the Sect Leader will find something to do with you...he might even have you trained up as a spy and send you somewhere else.”
“Sure,” Meng Yao said, thinking more about the promise that extremely talented people could even eventually earn the surname ‘Wen’ for their own. “Whatever.”
Anyway - how bad could it be?

Account of the Di (WS101)
[I.e. the kingdom of Chouchi. This post covers down to the ascension of Yang Baozong in 429]
The Di are a separate kind of the Western Yi, titled the Baima. At the juncture of the Three Eras, perhaps Bai was a lord or chief, but in that period there was a single court audience. For that reason the Poetry claims:
Since those Di and Qiang, do not dare not to come to the King.
From Qin, Han and onwards, for generation they lived in Qi, Long and southwards, and Hanchuan and westwards, and established themselves as prominent leaders.
In the middle of Han's Jian'an [196 – 220] there was Yang Teng, he was a great leader of the section's family groups. Teng was brave, strong and with many plans and schemes. He was the first to move to Chouchi. Chouchi has an area of a hundred [bai] qing, because of that he used it as a title. [All] four sides are steep and sheer, and are 7 li tall. The road coils like goat intestines for thirty-six rotations. On its top is the source of the Feng river. They cook the earth to achieve salt.
After Teng there was someone named Qianwan. Wei designated him as King of the Baiqing Di. Qianwan's grandson was named Feilong. He gradually grew strong and flourishing, Emperor Wu of Jin made use of him as General who Pacifies the West.
He had no sons, and reared his sister's son Linghu Maosou as his son. Middle of Emperor Hui's Yuankang era [291 – 299], Maosou titled himself General who Supports the State and Worthy King of the Right, the crowd of Di pushed him forward as ruler. Many of the gentlemen Within the Passes who drifted and moved about relied on him. Emperor Min used him as General of Agile Cavalry and Worthy King of Left.
Maosou died, and his son Nandi controlled the position. He and his younger brother Jiantou divided the entourage. Nandi titled himself Worthy King of the Left and stationed at Xiabian. Jiantou titled himself Worthy King of the Right, and stationed at Hechi.
Nandi died, his son Yi was installed. He titled himself Envoy Holding the Tally, Dragon Prancing General, Worthy King of the Left, and Duke of Duke of Xiabian. He used Jiantou's son Pan as Envoy Holding the Tally, General of the Best of the Army, Worthy King of the Right, and Duke of Hechi. He was subject to Jin, and Jin used Yi as General who Conquers the South.
3rd Year [of Xiankang, 337 AD, per Songshu], Yi's senior kinsman Chu assaulted and killed Yi, and also gained his multitudes. He installed himself as Duke of Chouchi and was subject to Shi Hu. Later he claimed to be vassal to Jin. 10th Year of Yonghe [354 AD], changed Chu to be Duke of Tianshui.
11th Year [355 AD], Yi's younger brother Songnu sent his aunt's son Liang Sanwang to take the opportunity of attending to straight away with blade in hand kill Chu. Chu's son Guo led left and right to excute Sanwang and Songnu, and then installed himself as Duke of Chouchi. Huan Wen petitioned for Guo to be Inspector of Qin province, and for Guo's son An to be Grand Warden of Wudu.
12th Year [356 AD], Guo's junior uncle's son Jun killed Guo and installed himself. Guo's son An betrayed Fu Sheng, killed Jun, and then declared himself a vassal to Jin.
An died, his son Shi installed himself as Duke of Chouchi. Jin's 3rd Year of Taihe [368 AD], used Shi as Inspector of Qin province, and his younger brother Tong as Grand Warden of Wudu.
Shi died. Tong deposed Shi's son Zuan and installed himself. Tong was also named De. Zuan assembled a faction, assaulted and killed Tong, and installed himself as Duke of Chouchi. He dispatched envoys to go to Emperor Jianwen, who used Zuan as Inspector of Qin province. Jin's 1st Year of Xian'an [371 Ad], Fu Jian dispatched Yang An to invade Zuan. He overcame him, and moved his people to Within the Passes, and emptied the land of Baiqing.
At the death of Songnu, his two sons Fonu and Fogou escaped and ran to Fu Jian. Jian used [a daughter] as wife to Fonu's son Ding, and designated him as Master of Writing and [General who] Leads the Army. At the defeat of Fu Jian, Guanyou was disturbed and chaotic. Ding exhausted his strength for Jian. When Jian died, he led the multitudes to run to Longyou. He moved to govern Licheng, which is 120 li from Chouchi, and set up granaries and stores at Baiqing. He summoned the barbarians and the Xia, and obtained more than a thousand families. He declared himself Dragon Prancing General and Duke of Chouchi, and declared to be vassal to Jin. Xiaowu promptly used what he had titled himself to make use of him, and later used him as Inspector of Qin province. 4th Year of Dengguo [389 AD], he thereupon had the land of Qin province, and titled himself as King of Longxi. He was later killed by Qifu Qiangui. He had no sons.
Fogou's son Sheng first was overseeing the state, and defended Chouchi. He then controlled affairs, titled himself General who Conquers the West, Inspector of Qin province, and Duke of Chouchi, and conferred posthumous title on Ding as Martial [wu] King. He divided the various Di and Qiang to make twenty sections with Army-Protectors. Each he made a garrison posts, and he did not set up commanderies and counties. Thereupon he had the land of Hanzhong, but continued to declare to be vassal to Jin. Beginning of Tianxing [398 – 404], he dispatched envoys to court [i.e. the Wei court] with tribute. A decree used Sheng as Great General who Conquers the South and King of Chouchi. He was isolated and blocked off by Yao Xing, and did not mange to communicate annually with tribute and envoys. Sheng used his older brother's son Fu as General who Pacifies the South and Inspector of Liang# province, to defend Hanzhong. Middle of Liu Yu's Yongchu [420 – 422], ennobled Sheng as King of Wudu. Sheng died, his private posthumous title was Kind and Civil [huiwen] King. His son Xuan controlled the position.
Xuan, courtesy name Huangmei, was titled Great General who Conquers the West, Opening Office with Ceremony Similar to the Three Ministers, Inspector of Qin province, and King of Wudu. Though he was a declared vassal to Liu Yilong, he continued to defer to the symbol of Jin's Yongxi era. Later he started to use Yilong's Yuanjia calendar.
Earlier, Sheng spoke to Xuan, saying:
I am aged and already old, and will end as a subject of Jin. For you it is good to serve the Song emperor.
For that reason Xuan deferred to him.
Xuan was good at entertaining scholars, and was cherished by migrants and long-time [inhabitants]. 4th Year of Shiguang [427 AD], Shizu dispatched the Great Swan-geese Arranger, Gongsun Gui, to designate Xuan as Great General who Conquers the South, Chief Controller, Inspector of Liang# province, and King of Nanqin. Xuan sent up a petition to request to be aligned with inner vassals. Allowed it. Xuan died, his private posthumous title was Filial and Luminous [xiaozhao] King. His son Baozong controlled the position.

in which my tarot deck advocates killing Jin Guangshan
I view tarot cards as a fun thought-focusing activity rather than a tool for divination, so when I draw a set of cards that seems random, I look for patterns and try to figure out other situations or people it could apply to, be they real or imaginary.
So today I present to you the cards I drew last night, which thankfully have zero application to my own life but DO give a spot-on reading for Jin Guangyao!
Tumblr media
The spread I used is the WTF Spread found here, and oh my god, once I got to the third card, I was CACKLING. Let’s go through it!
(tl;dr the cards say TIME FOR PATRICIDE)
“WHAT THE” (the challenge at hand): Six of Wands upright
The Six of Wands is about accomplishments, success, and recognition. To quote the book that accompanied my deck: “This card indicates that you have approached your goals with strength, perseverance, and focus, and that others are taking notice. [...] With achievement and praise comes the expectation of future greatness. Get ready to take things to the next level.” It’s important to note that Wands as a suit is about creativity, so cleverness/resourcefulness is core to this particular type of success.
A very positive card, but it’s in the “problem” position, which means that the expected recognition has not been forthcoming. For example, maybe your dad still treats you like garbage even though you've gone above and beyond in everything from event planning to war crimes. What else do the cards say?
“ACTUAL” (what is real about the situation?): Two of Swords upright
The Two of Swords warns against avoidance or denial of difficult truths--hence the blindfold over the falcon’s eyes. Swords as a suit is about logic and decisiveness, so this card urges you to look at things objectively and take action. “Many major decisions involve pain, sacrifice, or sadness,” says the book. “Now is not the time to be emotional about your choices.“
JGY understands this--he says as much to NMJ in their final confrontation on the stairs--but he’s still clinging to the hope that JGS will accept him if he shows enough filial piety. Has literally any of that panned out, buddy? The cards say it’s time to face facts.
“FUCK” (what is not real about the situation?): Four of Pentacles reversed
The Four of Pentacles is about materialism--you’ve accumulated wealth, but you’ve alienated yourself from community and interpersonal connection. (So, you know, typical Jin behavior.) When reversed, it implies greed or a debilitating fear of losing wealth or material security. “Learn to set aside the fear, anxiety, and greed, and see wealth as just one facet of a healthy life,” the book advises.
Easier said than done if you grew up in poverty and have a chip on your shoulder! But this card is in the “what’s NOT true” position, reminding JGY that his situation is not as precarious as it was when he was Meng Yao. Maybe JGS is more of a threat than a safeguard.
“?” (where do I need more information?): Six of Cups reversed
Cups cards are about emotions, and the Six of Cups is generally a positive card about happy memories and childhood nostalgia. When it’s reversed, however... “You are clinging to your ideas or identity from the past or there are issues from your past from which you have not moved forward. Use your past as the guide to your future, but focus on the present and laying your foundations for the future.”
GOSH GOLLY, I WONDER HOW THIS COULD POSSIBLY RELATE TO JIN GUANGYAO!
The “more information” sought in this case would be, what course of action would best allow him to avenge honor his mother? It sure would be handy if JGS candidly stated his opinion of Meng Shi where JGY could hear it!
“!” (what can I do?): Knight of Pentacles reversed
Pentacles as a suit isn’t just about wealth; it’s about security. The Knight of Pentacles embodies responsibility and an affectionate sort of sturdiness. “The archetype represented by this knight is the dependable, strong, male protector and provider.” Reversed, it can mean that something--or someone, since court cards are often understood to represent people in your life--is not as dependable as you thought.
JGY had a Knight of Pentacles in NMJ until he didn’t. He had a Knight of Pentacles (but make it EVIL!) in WRH, but that was meant to be temporary. He wanted and expected his father to be the all-time Knight of Pentacles, but JGS never was and never will be. JGY is 2 for 3 on murdering failed Knights of Pentacles. This card says that it’s time to go for 100%.

Zydra and her team are basically what I learned from the Arc 3 cowboys and did right this time - she actually has narrative relevance, her story reflecting Team RAIN’s in arc 1. Just as Irving was tricked, so was she - and that empathy is what teaches Irving to let go of his black-and-white morality and forgive her because she was manipulated.
Also, Irving and Nyssa make out, so that’s a plus!
